After a night of stealth parking in Lander, Wyoming, and breakfast in our van, we set out on the Chief Washakie Trail through Wyoming. The trail follows the highway offering gorgeous mountain views and includes a stop in Fort Washakie at Sacajawea Cemetery. Along the road to Grand Teton National Park, we stopped at several scenic overlooks including the Tie Hack Memorial in Dubois, Wyoming, that is an homage to woodsmen, mostly Scandinavian and Irish Immigrants, who formed the railroad ties by hacking timber. A short but steep roadside trail takes you to the memorial that offers a spectacular views of the Wind River, where the ties were floated downstream to their destinations. The Thor Scope Ram 1500 handled the mountain passes well, and rolled smoothly on downhill passes so steep you did not need to press the acceleration. On Highway 287/26 we caught our first glimpse of the Grand Teton formation. After entering the park at the Moran Entrance, we headed north, first stopping at Oxbow Bend where Ozzy, our 13 lb. Chihuahua, tried to pick a fight with a Golden Retriever. We continued north on to Colter Bay Marina in search of pizza and spectacular views. Unfortunately the cafe was closed for the season, but the view of the bay was spectacular. We enjoyed lunch in our van as we looked out at the mountains towering above the water. Later, we decided not to camp at the park as the overnight lows were predicted below freezing and we had not winterized our van. We journeyed south, stopping at the Jackson Dam, where we walked easy dirt trails, but ended our exploration after seeing Caution signs for Bear activity. Our final stop in the park was at Jenny Lake, which offered beautiful views. Our day ended in Jackson, Wyoming at the Snow King Resort and Hotel where we enjoyed two warm evenings before continuing our trip.
