    Okay, Thrawn says specifically, "My eyes see a slightly different spectrum than yours," and every source says that Chiss eyes "edge slightly into the infrared spectrum." You gotta take that word SLIGHTLY into account. Thrawn says to the Afe clan leader Joko that he wanted to "observe the crops in the moonlight...Sometimes the altered spectrum offers clues."
    All this tells me that Thrawn likely does not see human faces as glowing orange and red blobs. He's not a FLIR camera. I suspect it's not much different as when our own eyes see someone visibly blush.

    • @MetaNerdzLore
      @MetaNerdzLore  Před 3 lety +61

      Yeah I wasn't trying to imply he sees like FLIR camera. It does say he sees heat differences, even which parts of the face heat up specifically in different people. I think took the visual to literally I just don't know how to interestingly show that he sees heat differences in a face. If I remember, I edit it only on his face. Obviously I don't mean that it is only the face, the fact the whole screen wasn't FLIR like shows I'm not saying this is exactly what it was like to see through his eyes

    • @Aqsticgod
      @Aqsticgod Před rokem +11

    • @gabrielcoventry4586
      @gabrielcoventry4586 Před rokem +1

      @@rushthezeppelin No they would see it kind of like bioluminescence and it would be extra colours like a colour or two added to the rainbow or perhaps shifted slightly down to infrared. {Maybe he can't see purple :O) It would not be like an IR camera because that translates it into information our eyes can pick up, it would be more akin to the kind of colours birds of prey can see but since chiss don't have the whole IR spectrum it would be limited than an eagle that can see trails of heat in the snow for example. IR radiation isn't heat, it's light that's given off as a by-product to heat so considering the human body is only 37.5 C then it would be a fairly dim glow.

    One of my most memorable summaries to the lethally duplicitous nature of Chiss society comes from *Star Wars: the Old Republic* (SW:TOR) *MMO-RPG.* This came from passing through a Sith Empire base on Hoth, from a trio of (NPC) Imperial Snow Troopers in casual conversation...
    - [Snow Trooper #1]: I never thought I could feel any colder on this blasted ice rock, until I caught a couple of Chiss looking down upon me with those creepy blank eyes of theirs.
    - [(younger) Snow Trooper #2]: I don't know, I find their women to be rather...exotic.
    - [(older) Snow Trooper #3]: Trust me, lad. If you don't want to be found lying dead somewhere, with a couple of daggers buried in you, you'll steer well clear of that lot.
    Even years after having left SW:TOR, that casual (NPC) conversation stuck in my memory. *:)*

  • @Anglomachian
    @Anglomachian Před 3 lety +160

    The issue of their force connection being a result of their culture is still viable if you take into account the values the Chiss seem to have. Generally speaking the Force does not respond well to methodological approaches, such as overt scientific investigation. Attempts to clone force wielders, or use the blood of force sensitives, or to try and use the force in larger predictable ways is usually either viewed as a dark side ability, or simply fails because it's not reliable.
    The Chiss are an archetype of a race who value (in general) logic and more secular forms of cultural expression. In no book that I'm aware of do the Chiss engage in any domestic religions or spiritual activities connected to religious practices. This may be (in a way) a sort of cultural blind sot for them brought about by a racial disposition towards a more sensible grasp of a universe that has an aspect to it that defies sensibleness (the Force).
    Therefore, even though they want for there to be a means by which their skywalkers can extend their precognition into adulthood, they may be on the whole actually incapable of seeing how to do it. In the most recent of the Thrawn books, it is several times mentioned that study into the means by which skywalkers actually work is standardised and largely unexplored. Basic things like how long they can be expected to use their abilities before tiring is known, but not applied individually, and a deeper understanding of the cycles skywalkers operate in when using their abilities is apparently largely not understood.
    From this I determine that the largely systematic approach Chiss seem to employ, which gives them great cultural cohesion in a system based on ambition and meritocracy, and lethal military prowess, also seems to at least partially blind them to an aspect of reality that simply does not work the way the rest of the universe seems to.

      Yeah, in a video on Togruta MetaNerdz said they have lower than average midichlorian amount, but due to their 'in-tune with nature' philosophy they seem to have relatively the greatest numer of force wielders of any species (besides yodlings). So if you do the opposite and go full scientific technocracy, you'll get lower force attuned number.

Funny thing, I don't object to them as the mediums between sentient beings and the more mystical aspect of the Force, what I always objected to with them was the cock-teasing slap in the face they were to anyone who supposed that the Force could be comprehended in any meaningful way.
      If you're going to make up some woo-woo nonsense that's supposed to be all feelings and vague signs, that's fine, but don't try to ground it in science, or even science fiction.

    The Chiss were introduced through Thrawn, one of the most dangerous threats the protagonists of Star Wars ever faced, because his strength was his *intelligence* - his tactical genius, not any Force abilities. He's a outlier in a Galaxy that seems defined by constant spats between Force Users, and it made him unique. To learn that Disney threw that away and made the Chiss dependent upon Force users to navigate cheapens his legacy, IMO. You'd think a people intelligent as them would recognize this obvious weakness and would have found a way to circumvent it. It doesn't make sense.
    As far as I'm concerned, the Thrawn Trilogy is, and always will be, the *true* sequel series.

      People unfortunately assume the chiss are just like thrawn, when in the novels it’s shown many times that thrawn is way smarter than most chiss and is considered a genius, even super smart officers in the chiss defence forces are always astonished by thrawn’s intelligence, the chiss aren’t a race of thrawn clones, just like his genius is an anomaly amongst humans, it’s an anomaly amongst the chiss, even if the species was introduced through.
      Also the author of the thrawn novels who wrote the whole force navigators thing in the new Disney novels, is the same author who made the original thrawn trilogy, Timothy zahn, so this isn’t some Disney BS it’s his idea, unless (and I really doubt that) some Disney executive decided to force him to add that part, which I don’t see why they would do that since this isn’t featured in any other Star Wars story except for the thrawn novels

    In canon, the Chiss are depicted as maturing at a similar rate to humans. In Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy, Chaos Rising by Timothy Zahn (canon), some of the characters are Chiss sky-walkers between 8 and 13 years old. They definitely not described or treated as equivalent to humans of twice their ages. They needed caregivers, as any human child would, on the ships they served. They were referred to as children, and other than the fact that they had roles of such great importance to safe navigation, they were treated much as human children of a similar age might be.

  • @Kelnx
    @Kelnx Před rokem +8

    The loss of Force ability in the Chiss likely has nothing to do with the region they come from. It's the same for many Force users in the SW galaxy. If the use of the Force isn't developed early, it stagnates. It is one of the reasons why the Jedi insist on training from a young age (another being ideological and questionable). The Chiss Ascendancy has no desire to encourage anyone to become a strong Force user that could challenge the power of the big families, so they only encourage "the sight" among children found to have that ability. These same children are told practically from birth that when they hit their teens they'll suddenly lose their abilities. So they believe it, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    The Force is very belief and emotion driven, and the belief that one will lose it with age alone is enough to block someone off from it. The Chiss also are a very pragmatic, non-spiritual people. Nothing in their society serves to guide anyone to have a real connection with the Force beyond what they use their children for. This is why even a Chiss can become a Jedi or a Sith when isolated, and I doubt it has anything to do with where they are in the galaxy.
    This applies to most people regardless of race too. It's really only rare exceptions like Luke Skywalker, who is so strong in the Force that he can be trained as an adult. Most go about their lives never knowing they were Force sensitive, and untrainable by the time they reach adulthood. They may have better than average dexterity or intelligence or something close to precognition, but nothing more than that can be developed.
    As Yoda said "you must unlearn what you have learned". Trying that with most young adults, and especially a culturally rigid Chiss, is near impossible. And without further guidance and developing a real connection with the Force, Chiss children aren't going to become Force users as adults. They'll be able to do their "party trick" level of Force ability up until the age they believe they can't. Because that's what they were taught to believe.

    Some of this information, like why Csilla is an ice world is now outdated and I love it, I am NOT spoiling the newest book as to how it came to be an ice planet. xD Thrawn is cool-headed, stoic, and tactical, but Chiss as a whole are far more common to your regular humans, with the exception that culture brings them to highly value their family and the success of their family. It breeds distrust towards other families like the Mitth and the Irizi being rivals, and it is a flaw that's been used as a weapon against them.
    I'm interested in the theory of Chiss losing their abilities in the Force to contain the Mnngal-mnngal, but to be fair, Chiss could leave the Chaos any time they wanted to despite that, so just because they lose it in their mid age years, doesn't mean they couldn't leave for the lesser galaxy as they call it at any time.
    It's also hard to say whether the Chiss that were Force users in lesser space were simply a product of currently non-canon old republic lore, or if... over millenia, this stunted use of the Force was merely something that developed, and wasn't present in earlier parts of Chiss history. At the time of the GCW, there were no known Chiss Force users past their mid age years. They had hope that perhaps they found a Chiss who could continue their use of it, and she became a prized piece of research for the Chiss as to why she could continue her Force use while others couldn't. She was the only one.
    As far as hidden history, this is true. But certain specific families from the nine ruling families did have knowledge that they kept to themselves, as greatest secrets, those being the Irizi, and another family I can't remember because I can't picture the name since I listened to the book and didn't read it. xD
    Nuruodo is completely abrogated. Nuru is Thrawn's actual last name Mitth'raw'nuru. The word Odo.... I'm not going to spoil, read the book it's incredible. Sufficed to say it was given to Thrawn as a GREAT honor for things that he has done for one of the nine ruling families. But his name was originally Nuru, not Nuruodo. That's all I have time for today, I gotta go!

    I'm re-reading the (new) Zahn (created the Chiss) Thrawn books. I also read the original EU books featuring Chiss. The new Ascendancy fills in many of your gaps:
    -You left out Ruling Family Irizi, Ar'alani's birth family.
    -The military is officially independent of any family, and not 'run' by the Nuruodo. (Though family rivalries are common on an interpersonal level.)
    -Chiss generally want to be left alone, and want nothing to do with being regional overseers. They'll cooporate with aliens only if they deem it necesaary for survival of The Ascendancy.
    -They are willing to bring in outsiders if they prove competant and are vouched for by a Chiss. Capt. Parck in EU rising to lead the Chiss/Imperial forces and Comm. Vanto in studying Chiss Skywalker genetics.

    I would theorize that the Chiss children lose their Force abilities due to a combination of things, Wild Space definitely being one. The other would be the cultural class system of the Chiss. Rigid and absolute, one lives to serve the whole...not the Force.
    We know from canon that the Force has a will of it's own. It has even pushed back at those that defied it or were trying to force it into serving themselves.
    It stands to reason that a young life spent in service to the needs of the ruling class only served to seperate them, further and further, from developing any relationship or deeper knowledge of the Force.
    As we saw in the Clone Wars movies focusing on the running of a war and neglecting the duties natural to a Jedi weakened their powers.
    Remember, from the time of the original force users, the Je'daii, one had to immerse themselves in study and contemplation to increase and master their powers.

    Awesome video, the whole storyline can be extremely confusing if you’re not caught up.
    Ezra speculation:
    Hearing all this I desperately want Ezra to have brought the Chimera to the unknown regions and join the Chiss against the Grysks. For the ultimate greater good of the galaxy, and most likely becoming a new type of force warrior abandoning the title of ‘Jedi’ (also morality and perspective shifts for the sweet sweet character development).
    And honestly if they didn’t do this then it would be a waste of all the build up of this storyline to not have Ezra be apart of this story especially involving the Ozyly-Eshembo.
    To me this is why he’s gone MIA for nearly 10 years, sworn to secrecy and loyalty to the Chiss.
    I’m also gonna guess he’s met someone at the very least because it has been 10 years, which is to be met with the condition of complete fealty to the Chiss in exchange for permission to be in a relationship, further cementing his ties to the ascendancy and making the quest for Ezra a lot more interesting if it’s revealed he is unable or doesn’t want to return. Maybe even the concept of what ‘Home’ is has changed for him after all this time; as a reminder Ezra will have been with Thrawn and the Chiss longer than he was with his parents (7 years), on the streets (7-8 years) or even with the ghost crew (4-5 years).
    I’m also hoping for this to introduce The Mother/Abeloth as the source of the Grysks unique abilities but can’t be too picky I guess.

    Thrawn's only real mistake in his entire leadership was seeking allies in an Empire driven by blind hatred, arrogance, and infighting among the Moffs and regional governors. I don't doubt that had the Republic prevailed over Sidious and Vader, he would have logically joined the Republic as it is the reigning galactic power. Thrawn wasn't about power, he wasn't about wanton murder and fear, he was all about respect.
    He showed his enemies exactly what he was capable of, all the while making his homeworld safer by keeping any attention away from his world and onto Imperial Affairs. He was a master tactician, merciful as far as an Imperial Grand Admiral can be, and genuinely inspired and motivated his troops not by blind killing, but by example. The other Admirals and Moffs did not hate Thrawn, they were consumed by personal jealousy over his successes and garnering the Emperor's favor. He hated Vader, often remarking he was just a brute and thug who scared his underlings into submission with force powers, not real leadership and intellect. Was this true? Not entirely, Vader's only real hangup was the hatred for all he had done and the destruction of his body at the hands of Kenobi. Not a lack of intellect.
    But in closing, Thrawn represented what a true Empire could be. Not the hatred, fear, or suffering Palpatine's Empire created. But a strong and just Empire, able to defend itself from all enemies, not just entrenched in petty political squabbles or intrigue and gossip. Not one entrenched in Force weilders and ancient religions. So with that being said, let's try this:
    Wh......where are we? Ezra said trying to get up after the powerful and dizzying hyperspace ride his "friends" forced him to take. Ensign!!! Said Thrawn, also clearing his head, position report!!!! Sir these readings make no sense!! What do you mean Ensign? Explain or be removed!! Sir, if the computers are correct, we have not only traveled an intergalactic distance ,but we have also traveled over a million years into the future. The star maps show absolutely NO reference to any fix points, buoys, or hyperspace lanes corresponding with our galaxy. Sir!!! Shouted another Ensign, this time a sensor technician, we have a ship bearing 030 mark 22 and sir........it is traveling at very low FTL.
    Hail it Ensign!!! Yes sir! Sir they have responded, their language is similar to ours ,it does not require droid translation or Unitran. They are demanding to speak to the Captain of this vessel. Put them on screen Ensign ,said Thrawn.
    Attention unidentified vessel, this is the ISS Enterprise, put your Captain on screen immediately, or you will be fired upon!!! My my ,he's in a hurry isn't he? Thrawn pushes a button, "This is Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Imperial Ship Chimaera, we have scanned your vessel, and while it is of rather quaint design, I doubt you would wish a confrontation, perhaps we could meet? I shall meet you aboard your vessel.
    And as Thrawn finished his final syllable, a shimmering light surrounded Thrawn and with a mere blink, he was on an alien vessel, familiar, yet so different. Impressive Thrawn said as a battery of heavily armed guards surrounded him, weapons drawn. Is this a form of teleportation? Thrawn asked. "I'll ask the questions" as a well muscled and chiseled man came forward. The cut of his uniform ,the hardness of the man's face, showed Thrawn he was dealing with a man who has not only seen many battles, but wears them like an unsheathed sword. And you are? Asked Thrawn. I am Captain Jean Luc Picard of the ISS Enterprise, I must say your ship is rather impressive, made of an unknown material and clearly supporting advanced shields and weapons. Also, we have detected a very advanced form of FTL drive we could not even imagine exists. So Grand Admiral, Picard gave a mocking bow, if you will so kindly allow my boarding party onto your ship, I might just be convinced to let you live. With the proper "compensation" of course.
    But of course Captain, where ARE my manners. Please take your boarding party and search my ship. But, you may find it a bit more "difficult" than you have surmised. Perhaps we can "come to an understanding" Captain? I am not here to fight you, I am a lost traveler from a lost galaxy, and I am search of allies like yourself.
    Go on........said Captain Picard.

    So, the Chiss have been one of my favorite Star Wars races since before we knew what they were called. To me, Legends Thrawn was basically the coolest Star Wars character who didn't use the Force, and his tactical brilliance, his use of art as an analytical, and hid ability to make even less efficient devices, like the hybrudium cloaking devices work well enough to trick Coruscant to surrender to him was just great. He's different enough now that I feel he's a different character, but I did enjoy his Rebels performance, as well as its use to return him to canon. Like others, this video has shown me some stuff I am less excited about; elements that make Chiss characters I've used, or wanted to, in the past, seem less viable, and that's too bad, but still a wonderful look at this cool, smart species.

    This video really helped me come up with a cool background for a Starwars 5e character also made for a fantastic hero forge mini, thanks. Honestly thought the Chiss were all hype before this vid.

    In other words, the Grysk are the new Yuuzan vong.(Doesn't surprise me since Timothy Zahn has written both canon and legends SW stories) I do wonder what disney canon will do with them but I doubt will ever see them on the big screen.

    The Grysks sound a little like the aliens from the Independence Day movies. A rather interesting canon stand-in for the Yuuzan Vong but I still hope the Vong will become canon again some day.
