I had the chance to meet him in The Netherlands, I worked at the hotel he lodged, When I called His name Sir Hugh Masekela, “He said where do you know me boy?!”, I smiled and said my dad and I used to watch your VHS almost every weekend and I love your personality and great music..after the convo, I stretched forth my arm to shake him...and this words he said will always be with me..”I DON’T SHAKE HANDS BROTHER, I HUG..” we took a couple of pictures...YES I MET HUGH MASEKELA!!!!! RIP LEGEND....
I will ALWAYS envy you 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
You are one of the blessed, I'm from South Africa but hardly saw Him, His a man for the world
Wow, gonna say the same, thanks for sharing this story.
❤❤❤
I was a groupie of note and I listened to many musicians who played struggle music. I literally grew up in the townships listening. One white gal. Not safe, I didn't care. The musso's used to let me sit on the stage or close to them❤
Hugh was a great friend for more than 40 years, and our friendship was rekindled when I came to SA in 1994 to work with the UN and later served as Ambassador of Liberia. He would call and say "Spoon, tell Sis Joyce I am coming to Pretoria, so please have some fufu and soup for me"! Our home was his, and his ours! He may be gone, but will never be forgotten! Thanks for the friendship over the years! RIP!
Bra Hugh

I can remember when i bought my first album it was 1965 grazing in the grass on the front of it he carry a mean trumpet and with the other hand he had briefcase with a zebra in the back ground and what was so outstanding my man Hugh Masekela was barefoot look like he just got off the plane from Africa. I will all way love his music he truly was an icon a masterpiece Hello.R.I.P.
Grazing in the Grass recorded around 1968 I have that album The Promise of a Future side two first song a short version. The Americanization of Ooga Booga recorded live at The Village Gate E/SE-4372 MGM U-DWI side2 first song!! No animals pictured just him barefoot in a suit news paper in one hand and hat and briefcase in another that trumpet had the Gate jumping was the bomb he has always been in my heart💞💔!!
I was a little girl, the first time I heard “Grazing in the Grass”. I was 4,5 or 6 in 66 to 68 when this song made a lasting impression on me. I will never forget the joy this little girl felt dancing with my cousins at my Gramma Nancy’s house.
