Yogananda Meets Ramana Maharshi

  • Swami Yogananda with four others arrived at 8.45 a.m . . . The group had lunch in the Asramam.
Mr. C. R. Wright, his secretary, asked: How shall I realise God?
M.: God is an unknown entity. Moreover He is external. Whereas, the Self is always with you and it is you. Why do you leave out what is intimate and go in for what is external?
D.: What is this Self again?
M.: The Self is known to everyone but not clearly. You always exist. The Be-ing is the Self. 'I am' is the name of God. Of all the definitions of God, none is indeed so well put as the Biblical statement "I AM THAT I AM" in EXODUS (Chap. 3). There are other statements, such as Brahmaivaham, Aham Brahmasmi and Soham. But none is so direct as the name JEHOVAH = I AM. The Absolute Being is what is - It is the Self. It is God. Knowing the Self, God is known. In fact God is none other than the Self.
D.: Why are there good and evil?
M.: They are relative terms. There must be a subject to know the good and evil. That subject is the ego. Trace the source of the ego. It ends in the Self. The source of the ego is God. This definition of God is probably more concrete and better understood by you.
D.: So it is. How to get Bliss?
M.: Bliss is not something to be got. On the other hand you are always Bliss. This desire is born of the sense of incompleteness. To whom is this sense of incompleteness? Enquire. In deep sleep you were blissful: Now you are not so. What has interposed between that Bliss and this non-bliss? It is the ego. Seek its source and find you are Bliss. There is nothing new to get. You have, on the other hand, to get rid of your ignorance which makes you think that you are other than Bliss. For whom is this ignorance? It is to the ego. Trace the source of the ego. Then the ego is lost and Bliss remains over. It is eternal. You are That, here and now . . . That is the master key for solving all doubts. The doubts arise in the mind. The mind is born of the ego. The ego rises from the Self. Search the source of the ego and the Self is revealed. That alone remains. The universe is only expanded Self. It is not different from the Self.
D.: What is the best way of living?
M.: It differs according as one is a Jnani [knower] or ajnani. A Jnani does not find anything different or separate from the Self. All are in the Self. It is wrong to imagine that there is the world, that there is a body in it and that you dwell in the body. If the Truth is known, the universe and what is beyond it will be found to be only in the Self. The outlook differs according to the sight of the person. The sight is from the eye. The eye must be located somewhere. If you are seeing with the gross eyes you find others gross. If with subtle eyes (i.e., the mind) others appear subtle. If the eye becomes the Self, the Self being infinite, the eye is infinite. There is nothing else to see different from the Self.
He thanked Maharshi. He was told that the best way of thanking is to remain always as the Self.
Later the yogi [Yogananda] asked : How is the spiritual uplift of the people to be effected? What are the instructions to be given them?
Maharshi: They differ according to the temperaments of the individuals and the spiritual ripeness of their minds. There cannot be any instruction enmasse.
Yogananda: Why does God permit suffering in the world? Should He not with His omnipotence do away with it at one stroke and ordain the universal realisation of God?
Maharshi: Suffering is the way for Realisation of God.
Yogananda: Should He not ordain it differently?
    Maharshi: It is the way.
Yogananda: Are yoga, religion, etc., antidotes to suffering?
Maharshi: Who suffers? What is suffering?
(No answer. Finally the Yogi rose up, prayed for Sri Bhagavan's blessings for his own work and expressed great regret for his hasty return. He looked very sincere and devoted and even emotional.)

The people in this video, from left to right, are his western secretary, Richard Wright, a student from Cincinnati, Miss Ettie Bletch, then next to Yogananda, Paul Brunton. At the 3:30 mark, a few other people enter the scene. They are, from left to right, Buddha Bose, Bishnu Ghosh, and Bijoy Kumar Mallick. They are the originators of what is now known as 'Hot Yoga' style of asana practice. The three are touring with Yogananda in South India, 1938. Among the places they go are Mysore, where they meet with Krishnamacharya and a young student that performs asanas for them, BKS Iyengar. Interesting huh?

A small correction here. they were not the creators of hot yoga. Hot yoga was "created" by one who calls himself a disciple of Bishnu (Paramahansa Yogananda's brother), who focused on the exercise part of Hatha Yoga. He has not even been proven that he was his disciple...

All saints are beautifully different in their own ways:) One could be the epitome of SILENCE like Bhagavan Ramana was and the other could be chatting away happily like Paramahamsa Yogananada:) How does it matter how their personalities were, the point is that they were all enlightened just the same,no one superior or inferior to each other, and our only goal is to imbibe their teachings, whatever feels appropriate for our own spiritual growth and work towards our own salvation:) Each of the saints lives is like the most precious gems that makes up a beautiful necklace or the most beautiful flowers bunched together to make the prettiest Bouquet:)

Paramahamsa Yogananda's task as an Avatar was to bring East and West together on the same spiritual platform and to show the commonalities between Bible and Bhagwath Geetha. So, he traveled to USA where he stayed till his last breath.
Ramana Marharishi never stirred from his abode at Thiruvannamalai near the Arunachala hills. The world came to him but he never moved from that place.
Yet, the message is the same: how to contact that inner light so we may all be in bliss.

+Awakened sky It's true and i think that you put it right "in his Natural state..." when someone is comfy in themself it shows as does the awkwardness of self-consciousness when one feels that they should be more than they are. If folks could only know that they're already perfect and stop trying to be "more" they'd instantly find themselves beyond where they thought that they wanted to go. It really is that simple but it usually seems to be that one Has to "battle" through maddening complexity before seeing the simplicity. Mind you, i did have a tendency to think too much and i reckon lots of folks do. LuvS

Saints are unique in their way and have work cut out for them. Yogananda has said that when he was with Ramana Marharishi, he met a "God realized" person (named "Yogi Ramiah" by Paul Brunton in his book "The search in secret India" but aka Sriram Yogi) and had he stayed some more time, he would have found it difficult to leave the company of this person.
Swami Kriyananda (a direct disciple of Yogananda and founder of "Ananda") years later found Sri Ram Yogi in a small village in Andhra Pradesh (South India). He had a handful of disciples. When asked why he did not have more disciples, the Yogi simply replied "I have done what God had wanted from this body".
Yogananda had a much greater work to do in the West but SriRam Yogi had a smaller work to do but he too was God realized!

The guru is not the man, the body, nor outward personality. Each master in the body displays and attracts differently, as do the varied flowers in a garden attract bees from all directions. Is one flower more “flower” than the others? It’s silly to distinguish realized masters from each other this way. They would most likely correct one doing this.

Autobiography has gone through many reprints. The meeting with Ramana Maharshi was omitted from the earlier editions.

Well, I first read the AY in 1970, and the story appeared then. So for 44 years (at least) the meeting of the 2 great gurus has appeared in AY. Kind of scratching my head as to why you forgot to post that fact. As a matter of fact, I read one story where a potential disciple came to Yogananda to live in his ashram. After a period of time, Yogananda told him he would be better served spiritually if he went to India and be with Ramana. As for myself (thanks to the AY story) I have used Ramana's "self inquiry" methods extensively. Namaste :-)

but follow who you are compelled to follow....at the end of the day ...it matters not very much....some are destined for clarity ...and others are not....but i do suggest you find out as much as possible about yogananda and maharshi and decide for yourselves..and i wish you all the best..it isn't a competition...its just there is ultimate truth taught by my guru sri ramanah maharshi, and once you delve into yourself...you will see his teachings were correct..without a shadow of a doubt....from then on all literature becomes meaningless and pointless...all of it..and you will have the knowledge to gain truth alone....you will also be saddened by the paths others have chosen to take....and you will try and guide them to the path you know to be true....and then like me you may honour this man as the most important thing to ever grace this world we are currently in....peace and love to you all.

Some fools are spuriously commenting about the spiritual stages of these two great masters from the plane of ignorance and utter delusion...it is impossible to recognise spiritual beings and great masters from their outward appearances and from their style of conduct in the society....ordinary men devoid of any spiritual attainment can’t even comprehend an iota of their personality let alone judging them ....and true realised masters will not comment.....external appearances are absolutely of no significance and morons who have no idea about the spiritual giants from India and their mode of operation are just exhibiting their ignorance and tomfoolery by even daring to comment on such masters let alone judging them....they must enlighten themselves about other great masters of the likes of Paramahansa Yogananda and Ramana Maharshi ; like Trailanga Swami, Akkalkot Maharaj, Totapuri, Bijoy Krishna Goswami, Bhagwan Paramhansa Nithyananda, Swami Dayanand Abadhut, Bamakhepa of tarapith etc...all these masters were spiritual giants with so called imperfect bodies who perfected the bodies and maladies of several medical patients who were labelled as incurable by the medical sciences and standards prevailing at that time.....these beings are rare and their actions are rare too as they are manifestations of the supreme energy.....no one except spiritually advanced yogis has the capacity to identify whether one is a true spiritual master or not....the western and eastern fools please let go your undeveloped basis of discrimination and judgement and try to enhance your knowledge by reading about such yogis and their lives.....they are all physically(consciously neglect)unaware of their own external appearances at the same time they have the power to manifest anything, literally anything they wish....changing their own body structure is like cakewalk for them....Paramahansa Yogananda had himself acknowledged about his body structure and that he chose to remain healthy (in his book journey to self realisation).

This video and the excerpted questions and answers when the 2 saints met is a pure jewel indeed because PY does not mention a dialogue with RM in his Autobiography. Just (quote) "During the hours that we spent with him and his disciples, he was mostly silent, his gentle face radiating divine love and wisdom".
And in the next paragraph succinctly explains his teaching, the "Who Am I" Just that. Two paragraphs.
Quite different teachings in my view. Ramana´s answer to PY´question about instructions for the worldly people, the suffering and yoga, aren´t they mind blowing? (for PY and for some of us)
I do firmly believe in all of the Yogananda´s written and spoken accounted touching experiences. Each and every one of them. Not only his but those of Sri Yukteswar, Lahiri Mahasaya and Babaji. What would´ve Ramana thought about Babaji? Also as "external" ?
I also find it Ramana Maharshi´s Truth as valid. Ungraspable though. He´s a saint.
I remotely sense they someway somehow converge but about Ramana´s profound teachings for now I can´t mindly bear them in my dual present and earthly lifetime less in this veiled Earth. I´m not mentally prepared yet. It´s beyond my scarce mental limits. Of course in the Timeless Infinite Realms it will someway somehow.
