If You Dial it Down to 1 SONG…It’s Hard to ARGUE He’s Not the GREATEST EVER! | Professor of Rock

- Forget the auto-tune. Today we’re going back to an era when singers could actually sing… unassisted. Just raw, pure, unadulterated talent. And in fact, we’re bringing you what I believe is the all-time greatest male vocal performance on a rock song. It’s tough to pick but I think Brad Delp of Boston on their 70s rock classic More Than A Feeling is the GOAT. Written by Tom Sholz the wizard who produced their Boston self-titled debut album in his basement is a perfect song. Upon release, it was an absolute instant classic. At his peak, Brad Delp was hitting and holding high notes that even the best of the best couldn’t reach, but despite that, he rarely gets the credit he deserves. So to put him back in the spotlight, I’m matching him against some insanely talented rock singers. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Freddie Mercury of Queen, and Steve Perry of Journey…. And I’m stripping three iconic tracks down to the vocals for a head-to-head match-up… to prove once and for all who really deserves to be called the GOAT… the greatest one-song vocal performance. Get ready, it’s all coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

I was talking to some friends the other day and we were talking about the greatest one-song vocal performances ever. As they were throwing out some amazing performances All I could do was think of Brad Delp of Boston. How he moved heaven and earth when he was at his peak. Man, Boston, what can you say? So elite. And so far above and beyond your typical rock band. These guys were history in the making. And so was their debut self-titled LP… which is one of the finest AOR albums. One that would go on to sell a staggering 17 million copies. Today we’re giving you a different take on their biggest song. and let’s see if you agree.
The line-up for this 70s epic was founded by multi-instrumentalist savant, songwriter, and sonic inventor Tom Scholz. Surrounding him was the formidable team of guitarist Barry Goudreau, bassist Fran Sheehan, drummer Sib Hashian, and at the mic, the legendary lead vocalist and guitarist Brad Delp. This Boston power rock album is a work of both art and science and an extraordinary achievement of imagination and innovation. A massive triumph, Boston’s debut helped save rock and roll and likewise ushered in a completely new era of rock excellence. And although there are only 8 tracks on this self-titled masterpiece, every one was good enough to be a hit single… That being said, the band’s label Epic chose just three, including the larger-than-life lead single: and one that may be the greatest one-song vocal of all time… More Than a Feeling.
More Than a Feeling was composed by the great Tom Scholz about the indelible impact that an old favorite song can have in your life. And wow did the theme of that old favorite capture the world’s attention. The song's narrator is not happy with the present, waking up with the melancholy of a cloudy day… and longing for a girl from his past… - Zábava
Poll: What is your pick for the GREATEST 1 song vocal performance of the rock era?
Ian Astbury Fire Woman
Brad Delp's "More Than A Feeling" - no question
Brad Delp - More Than A Feeling
Steelheart - She's Gone
Stargazer RJD (Rainbow)
Close 2nd would be Child In Time Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)
The fact that Boston is not in the Rock&Roll Hall of fame is 'criminal'
The RRHoF doesn't deserve the breath you give it to. They, and Rolling Stone magazine, are, themselves, relics of a bygone era, and have lost their way.
I agree
No fucking way!!!
@@chrishappysofar2090 Yeah the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is run by Woke people. They say people can vote for who they want to get in but that was a shame. Pat Benatar led the votes for several years but they put in black non-rock & roll artists/groups instead
I would not worry about what that joke of a hall of fame does or does not do. They are irrelevant.
I'm a 59-year young Black man who didn't grow up listening to this music in St. Louis MO, although it was available, I was an R&B/Soul guy.
It was not until I left at 18 to join the USAF, had I heard this music. And my first introduction to the genre was Steve Perry and Journey. I thought he was amazing and then I heard Brad Delp and Boston and no one touches Brad Delp hands down.
There's good reasons to be an R&B/Soul guy, but glad you were able to enjoy this kind of rock too. Lots of crazy male rock vocalists hitting notes in the 60s and 70s, and a handful in the 80s (Sammy Hagar and others)
F***ing right!
absolutely
The only person I've ever heard even touch Delps vocals on More Than A feeling is Dan Vasc, a Brazilian singer who has a channel here on CZcams. His range is bonkers! He can sing anything... opera, musical theater, ballads, classic rock, pop, soft rock and his absolute favorite genre, metal. I'm a huge music fan and I don't know if I could pick one genre or one singer, but Dan is becoming one of my top 5 for sure.
@@bobbiejojackson9448 I’ll have to check him out. Thanks for the info.
Delp, without a doubt, is and was the greatest singer of all time. His range is unbelievable, and he never lost any of that range as he aged. Gone way too soon. 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Delp and Ann Wilson form Heart. The two absolute greatest.
Thank you for giving Brad Delp some recognition the he deserves! I’ve felt he was under appreciated for years! His vocal power at all levels is insane! I was so devastated when he passed but his singing will live on in my heart. Every new piece of audio equipment I’ve ever purchased- including car stereos- More than a feeling is the first cassette, then CD, then MP3 song I have ever played! I’m pushing 54 now, so that’s a lot of “Feeling!’”
Delp was absolutely one of the greatest rock singers ever. RIP
Yes 😊
Boston would never have enjoyed that much success if not for Brad Delp. He was THE talent of the very narcissistic but genius effort of Scholz.
No one like him. He is sorely missed.
Definitely.
Yes he was.
Definitely my favorite singer.
When the Boston debut came out, I was ten. I had a horrible speech impediment and an abusive step father. Life was lonely and bleak. Then I heard them on the radio for the first time it was if my soul filled up that their was beauty and greatness somewhere in the universe, and maybe someday I might find my own. Boston = Hope and Goodness for me. Bless them!
So, have you found yours yet??? Beauty and greatness??? I don't know you, but I hope so.
Peace ✌️🕊️
I just teared up. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for asking. Very kind. I have a great life now. Best wife and son a man could ask for. @@michaelmorin1926
Music is the ultimate healer.
So true- hope, energy, inspiration!! Hope life is good and getting better for you !!!
I met Brad twice. Once during a Beatlejuice concert at some restaurant during a snowstorm. My brother and I were among just a handful of people who showed up. During a set break, Brad approached us and struck up a conversation. I was absolutely awestruck. He was such nice guy. Another time he showed up at the Subaru dealership I was working at. Again, he was approachable and totally open to conversation. A truly special human being Brad was.
First rock song 45 I got in my lif 1976. One of the best songs Ever. Hands down . Still makes me happy to this day. 58 yrs old now
The way Tom's guitar blends into Brad's voice can carries the notes so you don't know where Brad stops and Tom takes over is just magic.
This comment says it perfectly
Rick Beato does a great breakdown of this song, separating out all the tracks so you can clearly hear the voice merge into the guitar. BTW...as well as everything else Adam mentions, Tom invented a bunch of electronic devices to modify the sound from guitars and other devices to achieve exactly what he wanted to hear. There' also a video where someone (was it Rick?) visits the basement where Tom recorded all the instrument tracks (except drums - he could play those!). He suddenly had to put an actual band together when he went to the record company!
Yeah I can't tell where his voice ends and it's just the guitar.
@@Triton_SecureSaw that…Rick Beato is great.
He uses Brads last note as his first note in the solo to make it a seamless transition, and it obviously is effective.
"You don't have to convince our kids...you just have to play it for them." Profound right there! 👍😎👏
It's so true!!! My 10 yr olds fav songs are More Than a Feeling and Foreplay/Longtime. My dad played them for me and I fell in love with Boston and now passing that gift onto my kids!
There have been some powerful male and female rock singers over the decades, some huge names, but Brad Delp could match or surpass any of them. What a loss. R.I.P.
Not only the studio version was gold, but the live version of this song really shows how Brad took the challenge and totally killed it singing those high notes in a stadium full of people.
I was working backstage security in Concord, California back in 04, I believe. Boston was playing. I didn't know anything about them, other than recognizing some of their hits. Before the concert, a roadie was standing backstage and struck up a conversation with me. This guy was super nice and engaging and immediately I liked him. And I am hard to please with first impressions, but this guy was so down to earth and disarming. We talked about all kinds of things. Then suddenly a door opens and there is a bunch of fans with VIP passes and things to sign, including one with a stratocaster. He kindly excused himself to me and began engaging the fans. I suddenly realized that he was not a roadie, but was actually in the band. Later, I found out he was the lead singer, Brad Delp.
I've met a lot of performers over the years and many were really nice, including Peter Frampton, the Nelson twins, Gene Simmons, Billy Joe Armstrong (from somewhere else) and so on. The worst was one of the members of Fleetwood Mac - not the drummer or guitarist...I can't remember his name or what he played, but he was a total prick. But Brad Delp was without a doubt the nicest, most down to Earth celebrity I have ever met. I had zero clue who he was until after that encounter and he never betrayed any sort of superiority or entitlement in the slightest. He was definitely my favorite celebrity encounter by far.
Probably was john mcvee
That was a great story!! It's awesome when the really special guys don't come across too cocky. They stand out because it seems so rare, unfortunately. Awesome experience brother.
@@redbrown7355 I thought John Entwistle from The Who (my god of bass guitar!) was nervous and shy, yet still saw it as important to meet the fans after the show in his dressing room and thank us for making his amazing life possible. Music stars really do owe it to their fans, and I thought it was great to see this true god of rock acknowledging that and living it out, despite being so shy and nervous. (I've heard he was always that way in front of audiences and around fans, but he worked through it.)
You so lucky man 👍!!
That's quite a story. How cool is that?
Rick Beato did a breakdown of "More than a Feeling" on his CZcams channel, breaking down and isolating Brad Delp's vocal tracks. You get goosebumps listening to his vocal range!
So did Ken Tamplin and Wings on Pegusus as well as several others here on TV..
I thought about that too, it was how I realized how extraordinary his vocal range was. No information on if he'd been voice trained. Can't imagine how it could be otherwise.
An amazing breakdown. Rick does a lot of great breakdowns
@@CMissShelleyMichelle I was just thinking of that. Remember Wings of Pegasus reaction? "Easily the majority of the keyboard, Brad has at his disposal with his vocal chords." What a voice.
Plus you realize how well the song was engineered by Tom. But Brad always was the soul of that group! He was taken for granted while he lived! We still don't deserve him!
Delp was a huge part of my childhood. I am 54 and he is definitely legendary. The whole band is. Thank you for this video.
I was 7/8 when this came out. From that first hearing to now it has been played over and over, it never bores me. It is more than a feeling that it gives you, it takes me away into a special place where only this song takes me, of hope and perfection, peace and harmony, and joy. It is my #1 song of all time. Nothing else come close to it. Thanks Tom and Brad.
I always think of a scene in The Men that Stare at Goats- George Clooney’s character listens to More than a Feeling to astroproject!
This band had a heart of gold. After their "Third Stage" concert, at Alpine Valley, WI, they invited everyone in wheelchairs, including my wife, to join them for the backstage party. For about 2 hours, each member of the group mingled around the room, spending time talking to every person. I remember Brad Delp being concerned that his voice being affected by his allergies. He sounded great! That night is one I will NEVER forget!
What a cool way to appreciate fans who are often relegated to crappy seating areas due to fire codes and sometimes thoughtless design issues. Thanks for sharing!
I was at that show in East Troy, Wisconsin! I was pinching myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
Delp is CRIMINALLY underrated. Nobody can reproduce his performance on this song. "More Than a Feeling" is the very song that led me to learn how to play a 12 string! The vocals, the 12 string sparkle, the electrics, the whole arrangement...not much new music today, if anything at all, comes close to these classics.
When my son was like 8 (2011) he wanted a guitar. An electric guitar. More than a Feeling was the first song he taught himself. Then he wanted drums and his Santa list he wanted a drum set "just like the drummer in Boston..."
(Sigh) Underrated does not mean incredibly talented. It means incredibly talented yet unrecognized or underappreciated. I can understand if you're too young to remember the earth-shaking impact the Boston album and Brad's voice had when it was released, but don't mistake your lack of appreciation for everyone else having that same lack of appreciation, not even when Adam uses the same unfortunate description. He's wrong. Brad and his voice were legendary, absolutely legendary when he was active with Boston.
I can't believe Adam compares him with Steve Perry. Either he still doesn't appreciate Brad or I'm missing something in Steve Perry's voice. If some day I realize Steve Perry's singing was incredible beyond my previous understanding, that's not Steve Perry being underrated. That's just me coming late to the party. It's not about him. It's about me. Steve Perry is obviously viewed by vast numbers of fans and critics alike as being a phenomenal singer. I just don't hear it. That's me. Look at the record. When Brad Delp's vocals are written about, it's always in the context of his unique gifts, how he was capable of expression that no one could ever match. I have never heard otherwise from anyone. Have you?
Yep, I wish we'd get back to that experimental phase where we try new patterns and the like. When you have only 1 or 2 people writing all the pop songs in the world, everything is bound to sound the same. Music is supposed to be just as individual as the people, so copy pasting just goes against the very soul of the craft.
@@beenaplumber8379 I was OK with Steve Perry, he had some pipes, but i was surprised Robert Plant was in there as i never considered him an amazing vocalist with crazy range (though i love led zep). I believe a much better comparison for More than a Feeling would have been Carry on Wayward Son, and honestly i am torn which one hits me harder.
@@imautubertoo Steve Walsh (Kansas) definitely has the power in his voice, like Delp. That's what I don't hear from Steve Perry. Steve W & Steve P have good range, but nothing compared to Brad, who spans nearly three octaves in this one song. Brad spans 2 octaves + 9 semitones in this song. I think Steve Walsh covers 2 octaves in Carry On Wayward Son. Robert Plant covers 2 octaves + 2? semitones in Stairway to Heaven (the first song that comes to mind, kinda in the same neighborhood as Carry On Wayward Son & More than a Feeling, though maybe not the best example of Plant's range - I think he goes much lower on other songs). These aren't carefully researched numbers, just what I hear in my head.
They're all great tenors, but I don't think I've ever heard Steve Perry sing low. Plant, Delp, and Walsh all go kinda low (Robert Plant in StH: "don't be alarmed now," much lower in other songs, Brad Delp in MtaF: "and the sun was gone," Walsh in COWS: "it surely means that I don't know.") Perry cranks up the power on his high notes, but I just don't feel it from him anywhere but up high.
The vocal range of Brad Delp and the raw emotion his voice creates within me is truly more than a feeling. ✨
PS. I love the story about your son recognising brilliance 🥰
"More than a feeling" --- I was a classically trained musician that didn't really listen to rock until I heard this song. WOW!!!
The high note at the end is even more remarkable when you realize there's a harmony note 1/3 above it! And Brad Delp sang it all, he was amazing and completely underrated.
Listening to that on headphones was a revelation.
I agree on the harmony note above it! Just when you thought it that was it, that extra note is there!
What is the note …. Somewhere around G above high C?
Underrated? I don’t know anyone that doesn’t consider Delp to be one of the greatest singers of all time. Also, 17 million records sold hardly screams underrated. Lol
Depp?..as in Johnny?...I know he can sing(very well, actually), but he is no Delp....@@MikaelLewisify
“More Than A Feeling” is the epitome of 70’s rock.
No human male should be able to sing that high. I don’t think we’ll see another like him.
RIP Brad, you’ll never be forgotten.
I read a few months ago that boys could sing high notes more easily if they were castrated. Brad Delp makes me forget about that fact.
@sharonbass6110
Male sopranos are laughing at your statement. czcams.com/video/QR7TOwrb6wo/video.htmlsi=TgZlPj6Qbyummw22
But how many women and girls can do it? If the fundamental job is hitting a high E, it seems that most of the people who can do that are women and girls, and I suppose unless portraying a lesbian they might change the name to any 3 syllable boys name, otherwise there is no problem with hearing women and girls sing this song.
King Diamond would be another who defies logic with his range.
I beg to differ sir. Jay Black (Jay & the Americans) was no sloucher as far as hitting the high notes.
Thank you. What a beautiful tribute. “More Than A Feeling” is genuinely one of the greatest songs of all time. It is close to perfect. And Delp is SO underrated. Steve Perry. Freddie Mercury. Sam Cooke. Delp is right there among them.
Brad Delp was the voice of my teen years in the mid-late 70's. He left us way too soon. RIP.
Rest in peace, Brad Delp. More than a Feeling will forever be one of Boston's most electric, chill inducing tracks, and his vocals really add to the enjoyment of listening.
It is electric. Great word Trina. Merry Christmas!
Delp ,Boston was way ahead of there time..... dont look back, and feeling satisfied are my 2 favorites! Just think how they could of changed rock n roll had he lived love your show!
I saw Boston the first 2 X they played The Providence Civic Center in the 70's !!! Brad was beyond good he was a GREAT singer /frontman !!! What a talent 👏!!!! So badly missed !!! They were better live than the albums !!!!
The vocals, the music, everything about it is so grand.
@@kevinvioletto2002yes they could have 😊!
I was fortunate enough to play with Brad quite a few times. Incredible singer and he was always so down to Earth. You couldn’t find a nicer “rock star”.
I've read in several places that Brad was "the nicest guy in rock n' roll." Cool to see it reinforced again.
I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE HARMONIZING WITH THE GUITARS AT "... THEY SLIPED AWAY" LINE FEELS LIKE SOMEONE OPENING YOUR CHEST AND SHAKING YOUR HEART...
I met Brad Delp back in 2006 at Albany inter. airport. We had a brief conversation as I checked him in(big Bostonfan). He was upset at the service at this airport leading up to his interaction with me. He was explaining to me how bad the service was compared to other airports. I assured him that from this point on the service would be excellent as I handed him his boarding pass. He thanked me and proceeded to his gate. A short time later his assistant came up to me and gave me one of Brads autographed guitar picks and said Brad wanted to thank you for the prompt service and your kind words. It was about a year later when the legend would pass. Im glad I treated him with respect and kindness and didnt get upset and be rude as some customer service reps would when he was voicing his displeasure with the service. I would have truly regretted it. Thank you for the gift of amazing music. Wherever you are "cool the engines" my friend.
Brad Delp sung like the angels. No comparison here.
sang like The Angel of Power!
Except Sebastian Bach was better!! 💯
I was a good friend of Brad. You even mentioned a band I played in during this video. Nice job honoring a great person 🙏🏻
was everyone in your band a homosexual like you?

It is the greatest Rock song, sonically, artistically, technically, and emotionally.
Once heard, it’s never to be forgotten. It blows all others outta the water.
Brad Delks voice is unmatched, and yes: He did deserve more from the Music establishment.
I saw them in Portland, Oregon many years ago. I was second row center. Absolutely amazing. Brad was throwing picks and tried to throw one to me. When it went off my hand and got snapped up he looked at me and mouthed “sorry” he had ran out. At the lend of the show my buddy grabbed my hat and lunged up to the stage. Brad saw and went to the drum kit to grab a pick. He looked straight at me and smiled as he put the pick in my hat. It’s been 25 years now. Pick is long gone but the memory of the greatest singer giving ME a pick will never fade. I still have the shirt he signed from that concert. Ex girlfriend had back stage pass. That’s another story. RIP Brad.
I am an MRI tech and frequently play music for the patients. This is the number one 70's group requested in my 20 years. I had a CD with '70's classic rock' and played it for over 10 years till it fell apart. Now we do streaming music. I still play this music way more than anything else. Everyone loves their music.
One of the greatest vocal performances in all of Rock history. It's truly staggering to hear Delp's voice soar in that song.
It’s like he’s learning to fly for the first time.
I still remember exactly where I was on the day I first heard Boston. In those days, amazing hits were coming at us left and right.
I view the release of that album as the very sweet spot of the greatest outpouring of musical talent in the history of music. It wasn’t just Rock and Roll, Motown, R&B, Jazz, Pop, Disco, Reggae, and even Country were pumping out amazing tracks like some sort of musical fire hose; just too many at once. It’s literally taken decades for me to go back, process them all and enjoy them one by one.
As someone born in Boston and grew up there this band always made me proud they had the name. One of the best albums ever, the whole thing is a masterpiece. They really do deserve more recognition . I am definitely glad I got to see them live.
Still have my Scholz Rockman I got in the 80’s.
Killer.
RIP Brad.
One thing that makes Delp my pick was not only his range but how buttery smooth his voice was. I rarely think of a rock singers voice as relaxing, but his was, one of a kind.
Wonderful tribute to Brad Delp. I'll never forget buying that first Boston LP and hearing his vocals hit heights that seemed impossible. Rest in Peace Mr. Delp.
“More Than a Feeling” is such a perfect song, and it resonates with just about every man who has loved, lost, and never fully moved on. That Delp gets to work with this track only accentuates his vocals. A lesser song could never catapult the vocal gift of Delp to that epic level as this masterpiece does. It’s lightning in a bottle.
I first became aware of Boston in my senior year of high school, when their Third Stage album started to get radio play. I became an instant fan and quickly bought their 2 earlier albums. Their sound is unique and you can always spot one of their songs, even if you weren't familiar with it. Their harmonies with the vocals and guitars are amazing. I'm still amazed that there are fans of rock music that don't know the name, even if they might recognize one of their songs if you played it. I still play their music on a regular basis.
I have always thought More Than a Feeling is the greatest Rock and Roll song of all time. One simply cannot listen to it and remain in a bad mood. It’s magical. It’s perfect. And Delp’s vocals make it more than a feeling…
Yes
Agree
Yes! I was in junior high when this came out, got the album - of course. It was on radio all the time. Since then I've heard it a million times but you're right. Every time is just as heavenly as the first time.
Nah, Long Time!
I was in 8th grade when this came out. It became the song that brings everything back from those days.
Intense.
I have long held that Brad Delp is the GOAT because of this song and Man I’ll Never Be. I sang in a lot of cover bands and it’s not too hard to fake Robert Plant, and with a lot of vocal training can cover most Freddie songs(good luck with The Prophet). It’s a lot harder to fake Steve Perry because of how rich his voice is combined with his range. Michael Sweet, Dennis DeYoung and Mickey Thomas have incredibly trained voices, like the buffest voices in the vocal gym. But Brad Delp is next level. I have never heard a male voice that clean, high, smooth and unforced at the same time. When I saw Boston in 87 and Brad Delp held that last note where the song fades until the end of the song it struck me that i may never see a live vocal performance that great again in my life. Nearly 40 years later, nothing has touched it.
I'd put Rik Emmet up there with those guys. (And at the same time he was a premier guitarist)
@@williamh4172 Agreed.
Man I'll never be, is incredible. He even nails it on the rare 1979 live performance at the Meadowlands.
@@williamh4172 Rick is great, but his voice is less full, more thin and less powerful.
Move aside, Steve Perry - Brad Delp is the REAL king..
I agree with you on Brad Delp having the greatest rock vocal on More than a Feeling. I saw Boston on their first national tour. Brad Delp could melt butter with that smooth voice of his. Boston opened for Black Sabbath. After Black Sabbath started their set, and they sounded good, people started yelling, "Bring back Boston! Bring back Boston!" And then it seemed like everyone in the concert hall, myself included, was screaming for Boston to come back. Boston did not come back to the stage that night, but no doubt they recognized they were worthy of their own tour, without opening for anyone. After the show so many people were saying they liked Black Sabbath, but they liked Boston a whole lot more. Boston was the concert to see in the '70s.
Brad Delp's vocals are unbelievable. He is one the greatest vocalists in rock, or otherwise. Tom is a musical, and technical genius. The Boston albums are all incredible. I can play Boston all day, and often, I do.....
My favorite band of all time. When I am in a bad mood, I turn this on , and my cares are forgotten. Tragic that we lost Brad so young.
i agree with you my fav album
One of my earliest and favorite memories of a Boston song was when I was about 7 years old in 1977. My brother had a GTO and had to watch me. He strapped me in the front seat and we went to go fishing. I remember flying down the highway as Foreplay came on the radio. My brother picked up more speed. I was having a ball. We were driving up a hill as Foreplay was ending and broke into It’s been such a long as we crested the hill and saw the bay in all its splendor. Wide open skies, the bay, it was an awesome view.
At the time I did not know we were listening to Boston or what the songs were. I heard the song a few years later as I was really getting into music and that memory came back to me. I still get that memory and feeling of awe to this day.
It’s such a great song. I love the part when Foreplay segues into Long Time.
THAT my brother, IS a sweet memory! Glad you savor it. Blessings. Sad these guys never truly could know or realize the IMPACT they had on our lives.😢 Freddy, Brad and sooo many many others…there’s a band and choir in Heaven that surely IS out of this world! Literally & Figuratively. Can you even imagine? Like the splendor of your view cresting that hill- it’s going to blast us! Like Bostons, “Blast Off “song, (I’m giddy just thinking about what awaits a music junkie like me on the other side), Patsy Cline, Oh sooo many! Freddy & Brad especially.
Man, I could see the view from the top of that hill from your description. What an awesome memory, thank you for sharing it with us. 😊
Awesome memory dude. Brought a huge smile to my face. Thank you. I remember cruising and street racing in the late seventies early eighties with more then a feeling abs summer nights by survivor jamming
I heard Boston as a kid for the first time in 1977 and even at that young age, Brad Delp's effortless, smooth tone of voice, and sheer talent resonated with me. No one can compare to him in my book! We lost an amazing artist way too soon! Thanks for highlighting him and giving him the credit and notice he most definitely deserves!
I started as a 16-year old fan in 1978 who soon developed a friendship with Brad that lasted until he died. He was so kind to me and my family over the years. I miss him terribly, but am grateful for how much of himself he gave to me (and others). RIP.
That's amazing wow.
How did you meet him and then get to hang out? Not many could say that.
You were fortunate. I am so sorry for your loss.
I would go back to 1978 and stay there. I was 16 also. The best times of my life.
I was 16 in 1978, too. Good days driving around DFW, Texas wearing out Boston cassettes in my tape deck. Delp is the GOAT for sure.
Randy Meisner Meisner’s live vocal performance when he sang Take It To The Limit with the Eagles at the Capital Centre in 1977. His high notes in the outro sends chills down your spine each time he sang it
Yeh it’s good. Delp could sing it in his sleep.
I was a senior in high school when this album came out. I am still blown away today as much as I was in 1977. RIP Brad. Thank you professor for highlighting this extraordinary vocal recording. Boston deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I first heard this song, and the rest of them on this record in my high school World Literature class. One of the students brought the album to school because it moved him so much. He convinced Mrs. Hatfield to let him play it for us. I had the 8-track tape by sundown. Sadly my friend Tom passed away before the age of 30. To this day I think of him whenever I hear a Boston tune. May Tom and Brad RIP.
I feel so blessed to have been born in the 60’s to enjoy the songs during the 70’s. Nothing will ever compare to these bands and musicians.
Amen to that.
I 3rd that.
The fact is 1963 through 1983 is far and away the best ever you just had to be there the seen was fresh and real
@@rolf3806 totally agree. ♥️
I feel the same way 😁
Absolutely the best rock vocal ever! No one can touch his range and pure sonic sunshine!!! Im 60 and this song has been with me and lifted me since 1976. It was always one of the first recordings I got. Vinyl, 8-track, cassette, cd and now digital stream.
I was fortunate to be young and love it when it was new.
What’s cool is my daughter remembers when she was little hearing it with me and now it is the one song we share as ours. Always, More Than A Feeling!
Thank you Tom Scholz and godspeed, Brad Delp❤️

R.I.P. Brad Delp…sorely missed. First time I heard More than a feeling I was playing foosball at an Arcade when I was 14y/o. I was hooked.
My favorite all time band!
When I was in college decades ago, I was singing along to More than a Feeling in my dorm and was mistaken for someone else who was known for being a good singer. When I revealed that is not who was singing, I was told "well, you still sing good!". A great compliment but I still cannot hit the highest notes in the song, not even in falsetto. Boston's very bright sound was a great example of accentuating and taking advantage of what you can do best, and what nobody else has so far tried to do. Musical innovation on multiple levels.
I was thirteen years old. Amanda was just getting on the radio. Out of that, Third Stage became a huge listening experience for me for years to come. However, soon after buying Third Stage in 1986, I wondered if Boston had other albums. To my surprise, the debut album and Don't Look Back had an immediate impact. To this day, despite thousands of listens over four decades, my impression of More Than A Feeling remains the same. This song continues to be my #1 classic rock song of all-time. Without question, Brad Delp is definitely the G.O.A.T. among rock vocalists. RIP Brad.
_Third Stage_ was a grave disappointment to diehard fans of the first two albums.
I would add that the whole album is vocally, musically and any other category one of greatest albums of ALL Time ever. Each song is timeless and magical excellence forever.
@@toughenupfluffy7294 I have heard that sentiment. It definitely departs. Though, if I am not mistaken, we get Masdea on the drums for much of the album and a section of a longer piece by Jim, with A New World. So, we have that positive element with Third Stage. 🤙
Their peak was easily at their debut, and Third Stage pales in comparison but that one is still great!
I was 10 when Amanda hit #1, it was truly the first time I heard beauty in music. Then my older siblings introduced me to the debut and DLB, and I was instantly a fan for life.
Brad was a very dear friend R.I.P... and Barry and his family still are to this day.... absolutely wonderful and humble people.... great vid
Boston....always one of my favorites! Ah the memories! Thank you!! Delp was able to blow them away...my favorite singer. Favorite group
Instantly puts me in a super great mood and energized like a teen again.
Such great memories.
I was a huge Queen fan back in the '70s, and as great as Freddie was, no one can touch Brad's range and sonic perfection displayed here. Heartbreaking that such a gifted artist, who gave so much joy, took his own life because of depression.
*_Success_* can be a one strange and lonely goal.
One may reach the pinnacle, yet the journey back down can be a struggle.
'sonic perfection' is a great description
HE WAS ALSO FACING A TERRIBLY EMBARRASSING SITUATION ...ONE THAT WAS TROUBLING FOR HIM ...SOMEONE WAS THREATENING TO EXPOSE SOMETHING TO HIS WIFE THAT WAS EMBARRASSING TO HIM AND MAY HAVE BEEN THE FINAL STRAW...STILL HE WAS A GOOD SOUL AND INCREDIBLY TALENTED MAN ..

Boston, my first ever concert in 1986. They weren't flashy on-stage. They just played amazing music.

Holy Cats! Thank you! This song is one that tests your abilities as a vocalist. I've heard very few people that could sing in such clean, pure tones and with such strength and duration! I adore the other singers and songs you mentioned, but Brad Delp's performance of More Than A Feeling surpassed them al! Thank you, Professor, for highlighting one of my favorites. 😊
I had the pleasure of seeing Boston 2 times. I believe one of the very best bands of my youth. Their first Album was the best first Album ever made. What a great voice and a great band. Miss them greatly.
There's a reason you don't find too many good covers of More Than A Feeling. You can't top perfection!
The only cover that beat the orginal is Hurt
With todays possibilities it's arguable hard to find a good cover that's not made by software, and few male singers of today have a broad vocal range.
(who needs to be able to sing when the software is fast enough already to even pitch correct it on live performances)
I think the vocal range of the song lends itself probably better to covers by female singers.
Qiuck search found me an italian lady who did a cover (only the singing voice) twice and i think the first half of the older one sounds like a good cover:
czcams.com/video/OU7tbak8_gg/video.html In the second half of the song she added too much sound effects on her voice to my taste.
And then there's "offtopic" covers in other music styles, like jazz: czcams.com/video/OkrHAEiZgPU/video.html
On the other hand it's of course down to personal taste too. (Personaly have such problems with Dire straits covers: Instrumental covers i have no problem with, but others singing it always sounds strange to me)

Brad Delp IS in the GOAT conversation...at least for those of us that can appreciate vocal range and soulful delivery ... Thanks for this, its a great tribute! I'm all but certain you know this, but Rick Beato also does an AMAZING episode of "What Makes This Song Great?" on MTAF...the first time I heard the first descent into the chorus torn apart and realized that Brad SOARS over the guitars with his vocals...just ... 🤯. Love your stuff, Adam... God Bless!
Dude this genuinely brought me to tears. I have so many great memories of this whole album. That self-titled Boston album was my first purchase with my allowance from Tower Records. I played it so often and so loud that my neighbors complained.
I heard that Scholz timed the vibrato on the guitar, the keyboards with Brad's voice and backing vocals so they seamlessly matched as voices came in and went out. Heaven
Brad Delp is absolutely in my top 5 male vocalists if not higher. The sheer range and tone of his voice was magic. I've listened and played along to all the Boston albums countless times. He is tragically unappreciated.
I’m sure he could sing countless octaves because he could hit the high notes with ease!

Because of my junior high school art teacher, Mr. Habgood's, music policy, many of us had the BOSTON album memorized by 1979 (whether we liked it or not). Habgood's policy was: "You can play anything on the record player you want as long as it's from our own school's library." Across the hallway from the art room, the library at Northeast Jr. HS had two current rock albums - BOSTON and Cheap Trick's Live at Budokan. So that's what was played and listened most days in the art room at NEJH in Northglenn, CO.
For years afterward, I could sing every track on that album from start to finish, even though I never owned a copy.
Two decades later, I bought a CD of BOSTON to christen my own classroom when I became a high school art teacher.
(Friends and I always loved to sing like Brad in the school restrooms where there was always lots of great BOSTON-like echo.)
Totally agree. My favorite part Brad's vocals on "More Than a Feeling" are at the end: how his backups lock into their position FIRST, already in place for his main "See Mary-Anne walk awaaaaaay" to fall into place for the epic, silky-smooth sustained harmony. The only other song where I've noticed this happen is Weezer's "Holiday".
Tom’s guitar “singing “ the high harmony with brad is so astounding. This song truly hits every single benchmark for a classic composition
Tom didn’t sing the harmonies. Brad Depp did all vocals.
He meant matching his guitar notes with Brad's vocal notes, perfect pitch to compliment Brad's voice

First heard this song driving with my uncle Brian in the summer of 84 in Worcester Mass. I had just moved there to go to high school from Jamaica, and had grown up on Journey, Reno Speedwagon, The Bee Gees, Queen etc.
He took me for a drive in his Triumph TR250 convertible and we were listening to WAAF out of Boston - when More Than A Feeling came on, he cranked up the knob and I sat enthralled by Brad’s vocals, the same way I was gobsmacked by Steve Perry on Don’t Stop Believing a few years earlier…..
I always loved Boston. Those guitars with those vocals. This band always makes an impact.
Man, I choked up in the end there. Brad and Boston are the soundtracks of my life. Thank you for the wonderful tribute to the man called “Golden Voice.” Mom passed away in 2006 and Brad in 2007. There is no song that I have listened more to than More Than a Feeling. It never gets old, it will never get old. I agree that this is the greatest rock and roll vocal of all time. What a gift God blessed Brad Delp with. May he rest in peace.
Same here. It's my morning alarm so I hear it every day.
I want to know how he matched his voice almost perfectly with the guitar. You can hear when the guitar takes over and he fades out his voice. Not taking anything away from his vocal abilities at all.
You mentioned your son's reaction to Boston and it made me think of my daughter at 5 years old walking into my kitchen and standing there amazed as she listened to the last part of nights in white satin. She asked who's that? And I told her, that's the Moody Blues.
For about five years from 1976 you could go from house to house from one high school graduation party after another and hear this song over and over and over again in an almost unbroken string.
Agree
The whole album, really.

One of the few records where EVERY SONG is excellent. It was so good even Boston themselves couldn't come close to reproducing those vibes
Yes and every song from that album was being played on the radio within 2 years of its release. Unheard of.
Right? Those next two albums are not bad but they don’t stand a chance when compared to self-titled.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I also think it crippled Tom Scholz as an artist.
Brad Delp used to tour New England with a cover band called Beatlejuice. They were fantastic, but I'll never forget that he struck up a conversation with my father and sister, remembered them the next time we saw them, and she introduced me like they were old friends.
"This is my brother-he sings and plays the Beatles too...this is Brad Delp, you know, from Boston???"
Yeah...I've heard of him, yeah...nice to meet you, Mr. Delp...
And my father always called him "a really nice guy."

Wow!What a tribute. It still boggles my mind that this band is still not in the R & R Hall of Fame.Thank you for this.
Boston and foreigner are the two biggest injustice to me for the R&RHOF. The fact that Guns and Roses are in but not Boston blows my mind. Both bands basically had the same career. Both had massive first albums. To many, their second albums were disappointments. However, don't look back is great, whereas Lies isn't very good. Then both had very good successful third albums. Third Stage was the first cd to sell 1 million copies. There are no excuses for Boston to not be in.

When I heard it for the first time, I thought that high note was being produced solely by a guitar. It wasn't until many years later that I heard an isolated vocal track that I realized it was Brad actually singing that note. Eyes wide open...and jaw hitting floor.
This is still one of my favorite songs to sing live. LOVE Brad Delp.
Not only is this one of the most amazing vocal performances ever. It might just be the greatest song ever written. Brad is without a doubt, the most underappreciated singer I've ever heard.

Way back in high school, Boston was one of the very first rock concerts I attended. Every song on their first two albums was great! And Brad Delp's voice was INCOMPARABLE. They set the bar very high for every group I saw after that. The eight years that passed waiting for their third album felt like an eternity. I still love their music just as much today.
That's very true those first 2 albums are incredible 👏 !!!

What year did you see Boston?
I saw them in 1979. Sammy Hagar opened for them.
Just watched your assessment of Brad Delp. I was in my 20S when Boston came out with their iconic album. I loved the songs, but Led Zeppelin was my favorite until now. The more I learn about him, the more I realize what a phenomenal singer he was and Tom's dedication to the perfection of his music was astounding. No one compares. They are so underrated and misunderstood. As Sinead O'Connor sang: "Nothing compares to you!" 😢
The very first time I heard this song, I was a 10 year old fourth grader sitting alone in the school cafeteria eating a cold lunch out of an embarrassing lunch box. This song started coming out of the old square speaker box hanging right above my head. Even as a 10 year old, I realized I had just heard a song like no other song I had heard before. Even as a 10 year old, I grasped the story, heartache, and nostalgia embedded in this song. This song captured my heart for music and rock and roll in particular. I suddenly knew what music I loved. The feelings and details of that moment were forever burned into my memory, and to this day I can remember it like I’m still there.
I agree with others who have commented that this is one of the best rock and roll songs ever written or produced. Every time I listen to it, I’m transported back to that moment in the cafeteria. But little did I know on that day that my own time was coming where this song, and later ones, would make me “dream of a girl I used to know” but she slipped away.
BOSTON! Best band in the history of bands to ever be considered the best band in the history of best band history!!
My last memory of Brad was in a Howard Johnson, I stopped to get breakfast on the way home from clubbing..so it was 3-4:00 am...I was with a friend who saw him and said "look at the hippie"
I knew it was Brad and called him over.. my friend almost crapped his pants when he found out who he was..
Brad stayed and talked, ate with us and paid the bill..
He was such a nice guy..I'm truly thankful to have that memory of such a legend..
Delp would be honoured with this video. What a great Love Letter to the Greatest of All... Brad Delp.
God I miss 70’s album oriented rock. I was a freshman in high school when Boston’s first album came out. It was fantastically pure, powerful and confident all mixed together. I remember a disclaimer sticker on the plastic wrapping on the album saying basically that if I didn’t like it, I could get my money back. I’ve never heard of or seen something like that on any other album since. I still have that album. Mr. Delp’s vocals will always be right up there with the best of them.
Delp is/was one of, if not the best rock vocalist. You did him justice. There are so many awesome rock songs in existence that I love and listen to often. Eventually I get a bit burned out by most, but More Than A Feeling is one I have never gotten tired of listening to since it came out and never will. For me, it IS the GOAT. Period.
