  • Clannad are a Grammy Award-winning Irish musical group, from Gweedore (Gaoth Dobhair), County Donegal. Their music has been variously described as bordering on folk and folk rock, Irish, and New Age. They are known for performing in various languages, including English, Latin, Gàidhlig, Mohican and most of all in their native tongue, Irish.
Clannad are Moya Brennan (born Máire Ní Bhraonáin), Ciarán Brennan (born Ciarán Ó Braonáin), Pól Brennan (born Pól Ó Braonáin), Noel Duggan (born Noel Ó Dúgáin) and Pádraig Duggan (born Pádraig Ó Dúgáin).
Clannad first made their mark in the folk and traditional scene in the 1970s in Ireland and Europe, they subsequently went on to bridge the gap between traditional celtic music and pop music in the 1980s and 1990s with albums such as Macalla and Anam. During their successful career they toured the world extensively and gained fans in every major territory. Lead singer Moya Brennan and her sister Enya have also enjoyed huge success as solo artists. The band won a Grammy Award in 1998 for Best New Age Album, and their record sales exceed the 15 million mark. They are also regarded as the band which, for the first time, put Irish traditional music and the Irish language on the world stage and paved the way for many other Irish artists.
After ten years disbanded, the five original members of Clannad reunited on stage at the Celtic Connections Festival in February 2007 in Glasgow. They expressed their wishes to release a new studio album, but no official announcements have been made as yet. Moya, Ciarán, Noel and Pádraig embarked on their first UK tour in over 10 years in the Spring of 2008, starting in Gateshead.

I am so proud of my Irish Heritage. My father was born in Ireland and I remember him telling me stories about it’s beauty. I always wanted to visit. It was on my bucket list for so many years, I am now 78 years old and in poor health, but I still dream it’s lush, green hills as my father told me.

This is the very best version of this song. I don't think anything has been done since this album that compares with it. It's practically because of this album that I learned Irish ... and that I went to Ireland ... it meant a lot to me once, 20 years ago .... (sigh) I have it on a cassette tape in my attic somewhere ... thanks for the memories!

Be proud of being Irish and of (probably) having Celtic lineage in your bloodline. I'm Italian and, despite all those who are used to telling me it's useless, I'm learning Gaelic by myself. To be honest, it's not that easy for me as it would be for someone from an English-speaking country, but this only makes me spare myself potential let-downs... Anyway, speaking of it, there are different opinions about what past politicians did for and against Irish national culture, but I think people should be sensitised to what their roots are and to consequently protecting them from corruption or, worse, disappearance. After all, culture is made of and by people... Clannad, in the first place, and many other artists, including writers, poets and so on, deserve acknowledgement for what they've done and what they're still doing to preserve this unique culture and language and to make people love it. There still is the mindless idea according to which history and ancient languages are useless; I usually ask myself why people should be so sceptical as to what History can teach them. The sooner they realise that every word they say, every single sound contains that underestimate history they're used to criticize, the sooner they'll find out that ignoring that part of their past means ignoring what they say. I wonder how long it will take before people figure this out...

Yes, it's slow going for us English speakers, but each time I see such a beautiful film in Irish ( _Ciúnas_ is another with great sensitivity) I want to learn to speak it. I saw them "live" in August 1977 in Ballisodare, County Sligo. Great group, great music.

I just got into Clannad a little over a month ago & this is my favorite track off of Dulaman. I remember seeing their new cd "Nadur" on a new release sight I go to & it said it was their 1st new album in 15 years. I'd never heard their music, but I had always known they were an Irish band. After hearing that it had been so long between albums I knew it had to be a big event. So I checked out their 1st album & loved it. Played it for 2 weeks straight. From that point on I decided I would go through their catalog from the beginning album to the most recent. Promising myself to give each album it's due listening I set sail. Spent 2 weeks on "Clannad 2" & loved that album even more than the 1st. So onwards I went to "Dulaman" & that's where I'm at today. Dulaman is my favorite of the 3 albums & this song "Siúil A Rúin" is so far my favorite song by them with "the Pretty Maid & Dhéanainn Súgradh" right after it. Now it's time to move onto "Clannad In Concert 1979. It's going to be interesting to finally hear what they sound like live. Totally excited!! We shall see.....

Sister and niece as the band is composed of 3 siblings (the Brennan's) and their twin uncles (the Duggan's). Enya was in the band until she left in 1981, and she is sibling to the Brennan's in the band.
