- Clannad are a Grammy Award-winning Irish musical group, from Gweedore (Gaoth Dobhair), County Donegal. Their music has been variously described as bordering on folk and folk rock, Irish, and New Age. They are known for performing in various languages, including English, Latin, Gàidhlig, Mohican and most of all in their native tongue, Irish.
Clannad are Moya Brennan (born Máire Ní Bhraonáin), Ciarán Brennan (born Ciarán Ó Braonáin), Pól Brennan (born Pól Ó Braonáin), Noel Duggan (born Noel Ó Dúgáin) and Pádraig Duggan (born Pádraig Ó Dúgáin).
Clannad first made their mark in the folk and traditional scene in the 1970s in Ireland and Europe, they subsequently went on to bridge the gap between traditional celtic music and pop music in the 1980s and 1990s with albums such as Macalla and Anam. During their successful career they toured the world extensively and gained fans in every major territory. Lead singer Moya Brennan and her sister Enya have also enjoyed huge success as solo artists. The band won a Grammy Award in 1998 for Best New Age Album, and their record sales exceed the 15 million mark. They are also regarded as the band which, for the first time, put Irish traditional music and the Irish language on the world stage and paved the way for many other Irish artists.
After ten years disbanded, the five original members of Clannad reunited on stage at the Celtic Connections Festival in February 2007 in Glasgow. They expressed their wishes to release a new studio album, but no official announcements have been made as yet. Moya, Ciarán, Noel and Pádraig embarked on their first UK tour in over 10 years in the Spring of 2008, starting in Gateshead. - Hudba

Sorry to hear that take care
Sorry to hear that man !
The most beautiful song of a longing woman i ever heard. Longing for her husband, longing for peace. So sad and beautiful it makes me cry
I am so proud of my Irish Heritage. My father was born in Ireland and I remember him telling me stories about it’s beauty. I always wanted to visit. It was on my bucket list for so many years, I am now 78 years old and in poor health, but I still dream it’s lush, green hills as my father told me.
The Irish sing with their HEARTS
so true
We sing of earth and stone and home.
Something happens to me when I hear Irish music. Tears and wind, and memories that aren't mine
I have a very similar experience. Even though the family has been removed from Ireland for about 3 generations....it is in the blood.
@@animefanred1271 ancestors letting you know they have your back. Come home for a visit.
@@gargarcomedy oh my...
Fwiw, a couple of songs/tunes do this to me. Every time I hear Clannad's Poison Glen I also think I'm in the wrong place; that I haven't found my way back to where I'm meant to be
czcams.com/video/jOhkq0KONAA/video.html
i know how it is...
Irish songs are both joyous and sad, this one is sad but also very beautiful. There's something very consoling about Irish music and the landscape in general, you can't beat it.
This is the very best version of this song. I don't think anything has been done since this album that compares with it. It's practically because of this album that I learned Irish ... and that I went to Ireland ... it meant a lot to me once, 20 years ago .... (sigh) I have it on a cassette tape in my attic somewhere ... thanks for the memories!
I doubt that I'll ever find a version of this song that I like more than this one. I keep coming back to it even now that more than 10 years have passed since I first found it.
Try the version by Orla Fallon, vert beautiful 👍🏻
I agree with you, I'm from Mexico, and i feel this as my only folk music :). And I neither have irish blood
I've really started to fall in love with Irish music especially Clannad, This is so Angelic
I love Gaelic and Nordic folk music, maybe it’s in my blood 🩸.
This band is absolutely fantastic! Love their music!
i love my country which is england but i love ireland and its heritage. my 2nd great grandad was a dublin born tailor who moved over here in 1870s.
It's a song about a woman seeing her lover off to war and sell everything she owns to equip him. She mourns his death when she realizes he died.
The wild geese
Thanks for precis. Always interesting to know; one can match the words to the melody. Strange how much music is to do with love.
oh my god that would be a very interesting movie to see!
@@yashizuko Not really. Woman sells everything, buys her lover a sword, he goes to ship and never comes back. She gets word that his battalion were felled. She cries, destitute. Around the world she travels baking bread.... uhh... that's it.
Печальное содержание. Я примерно так и предполагал.
Be proud of being Irish and of (probably) having Celtic lineage in your bloodline. I'm Italian and, despite all those who are used to telling me it's useless, I'm learning Gaelic by myself. To be honest, it's not that easy for me as it would be for someone from an English-speaking country, but this only makes me spare myself potential let-downs... Anyway, speaking of it, there are different opinions about what past politicians did for and against Irish national culture, but I think people should be sensitised to what their roots are and to consequently protecting them from corruption or, worse, disappearance. After all, culture is made of and by people... Clannad, in the first place, and many other artists, including writers, poets and so on, deserve acknowledgement for what they've done and what they're still doing to preserve this unique culture and language and to make people love it. There still is the mindless idea according to which history and ancient languages are useless; I usually ask myself why people should be so sceptical as to what History can teach them. The sooner they realise that every word they say, every single sound contains that underestimate history they're used to criticize, the sooner they'll find out that ignoring that part of their past means ignoring what they say. I wonder how long it will take before people figure this out...

(sorry, just noticed)
Anche io sono italiana e vorrei imparare il galeico! Tu come lo stai imparando?
Samuele Tassi Oh we are a lot older than the Celts. Thank you for learning our language brother. slàn anois chara
Io penso che per un inglese imparare un qualsiasi dialetto gaelico sia come imparare il russo. Sono lingue che non hanno nulla in comune, tranne naturalmente le contaminazioni subite dai celtici per opera dell'invasore germanico.
Samuele Tassi I've been learning some Irish Gaelic on Duolingo lately. I can attest, as an English speaker, it's far from easy! But I like the challenge.
Clannad always reaches me in ways I can’t explain…..
I'm learning this because my bestfriend is Irish and he's away from home and this is his favorite song so I'm trying to learn it that way he feels a bit at home on his travels. I miss him a lot...
I have not heard anything magical like this in so long. It can take you to another place. Peaceful ✌️
Thanks. I listened to Clannad growing up whenever we'd visit my mom's Irish American side in Chicago.
i fell in love with Clannads music after hearing the theme from Harrys Game and i`ve never looked back, Amazing group
Almost 30 years since I bought my first Clannad album. Had forgotten how great they were back then. Music that stands the test of time.
I've been fascinated with Ireland and its people ever since I was a child. Most of my ancestors on my mother's side came from over there. My grandmother could speak some irish and remembered some of the old traditions. These songs remind me of her.
🇮🇪
Having this on CZcams is a wonderful thing. I no longer had the music and sang every word with this~! Thanks!~
the NIGHTINGALE brought me here :)
Brilliant film!
That movie destroyed me and ripped me a new asshole holy fuck
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain I wish I had my heart again.
It's very simple and very touching.
Clannad and Enya are two amongt the many jewels Ireland shared with the rest of the world. It's not even that they changed me, juste that i wouldn't even be there still, without them.
I FEEL THIS MUSIC TOUCHES MY SOUL....HAUNTINGLY SOOTHING...SUCH BEAUTY IN EVERY NOTE.......I FEEL AT PEACE...❤😇🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dear God!!!! This takes me to another place.
Это прекрасно, чёрт возьми!
I don't undestand a single word but (damn!) this is beautiful!
Much love !!!!
I felt my whole body shivering throughout all these 5:49 minutes.
Is grá liom Éire ❤
What a lovely song. Such fond memories of the 80s - the time i first discovered Clannad.
I was introduced to this song in the '70's through Peter, Paul and Mary. Then found THIS, definitive interpretation that opened up my heart to learning sean nos style singing. Going to Ireland in September to begin that journey with 3 traditional singers....
Always love this group as they seem to drift in and out with some of the best music ever.
first heard the Celtic Women version. I found this and I found it more to my liking. It's so nice....
Greatest version of this song
This is really a gem. Very beautiful...
This is pure beauty.
The most beautiful song in the world. It tears my heart into small pieces every time.
Oh my..I so much love the Irish. God bless them.
Simply magic...I dont understand a word, but I can feel everything..I live in city founded by Celts, 2500 years ago (Belgrade, ex Sindidun)...Astral lines of civilizations and languages are spread all over the world, in many misterious ways...
So gorgeous. I wish all of the people so entranced by Celtic Woman would take the time to listen to some of Clannad's music. Genuine Celtic music with none of the hype or pretension. Thanks to SportyMike for this post.
They are a family who grew up in Gweedore, Co. Donegal, speaking Irish.
Hear hear!!! Original and best!!!
Terrific! And i found this video by accident, How Lucky I Am!
Love this song. It´s simple and deep.

. *My favorite version of this song!*
Máire (or Moya, whatever) really emotes the sadness
and longing of the story in this song...
Celtic Woman can sing it but this is much better!!!!
Thanks for posting!
Beautiful.....takes me back to the years watching Robin The hooded man with my children
.......
I've heard different versions of this, this one is definitely the best!
To all fellas who like this genre of music, listen to "Vashti Bunyan" songs, they are peaceful, calm and relaxing!
certainement le meilleur groupe musical irlandais de tous les temps ! aucune concession, pas de tintamarre, pas de cirque ! respect pour ces défenseurs de la culture et de la langue irlandaise !
Grásta ó Dhia ar anam Phádraig a cuireadh inné.

Amazing song, amazing album, amazing band; and Maire - an angel voice. Love Éire!
Diese Folkgruppe habe ich geliebt.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful
Saw them at the Project Arts Centre back in the mid 70's. They were amazing then and still are.

Fantastische en ontspannende muziek
Konnie ! Tor sehnt sich nach Dir ! ❤❤❤
I wish I was on yonder hill
'tis there I'd sit and cry my fill
Until every tear would turn a mill
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
Siúil siúil siúil a rún
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
I'll sell my rock I'll sell my reel
I'll sell my only spinning wheel
To buy my love a sword of steel
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
Siúil siúil siúil a rún
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
I'll dye my petticoats I'll dye them red
And 'round the world I'll beg my bread
Until my parents shall wish me dead
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
Siúil siúil siúil a rún
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
I wish I wish I wish in vain
I wish I had my heart again
And vainly think I'd not complain
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
Siúil siúil siúil a rún
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
But now my love has gone to france
To try his fortune to advance
If he e'er comes back 'tis but a chance
Is go dté tú mo mhuirnín slán
Siúil siúil siúil a rún
Siúil go socair agus siúil go ciúin
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
Thankyou
What can i say... Soon as i hear music like this, i feel like i was living in the middle century, in some village with the view of a big castle... Hearing knights tales like everyday news and enjoying the simple life 💚💚🏰 Clannad you re magic
Saw them in Sydney 1996 - Best Concert ever…
One of my most favourite songs
I saw the exquisite film _An Cailín Ciúin_ and had to come back to listen to this song again because it's where I learned _ciúin_ ! I was happy to see I knew all three words of the title! Yes, it's slow going for us English speakers, but each time I see such a beautiful film in Irish ( _Ciúnas_ is another with great sensitivity) I want to learn to speak it. Or at least hear and read it.
That was beautiful.
Beautiful. !!
I admit, I've heard of Clannad but have never given them a listen until now. I love how dreamy it sounds, like a wistful Irish lullaby. At the risk of sounding like a pretentious hack, I'm adding them to my faves list simply because of the inspiration it provides from the sound.
^^
🇮🇪
Beautiful........... thanks for posting.
So beautiful love this!
so very lovely song !!
Beautiful song, from my favourite of all the Clannad albums.Their early Haunting Acoustic music has always been the best!
Somewhere in County Donegal, there's a small woman with deep brown eyes and long black hair. After the horrors of Brexit, she wanted to return to Ireland, feeling unsafe in this fallen country. I wasn't ready to go, so we parted in love and mutual respect.
But even now, years later, my eyes stray to the westward horizon, and hope that one day...
absolutly fantastic!!!!
One of the greatest songs sung by one of the great groups - magnificent and thanks for posting it.
I saw them "live" in August 1977 in Ballisodare, County Sligo. Great group, great music.
To my mind, this is one of the best performances of this song.
That was incredible.
In deep love forever with this music. Forever and ever
Sweet ballad. So perfect and delicate
I just got into Clannad a little over a month ago & this is my favorite track off of Dulaman. I remember seeing their new cd "Nadur" on a new release sight I go to & it said it was their 1st new album in 15 years. I'd never heard their music, but I had always known they were an Irish band. After hearing that it had been so long between albums I knew it had to be a big event. So I checked out their 1st album & loved it. Played it for 2 weeks straight. From that point on I decided I would go through their catalog from the beginning album to the most recent. Promising myself to give each album it's due listening I set sail. Spent 2 weeks on "Clannad 2" & loved that album even more than the 1st. So onwards I went to "Dulaman" & that's where I'm at today. Dulaman is my favorite of the 3 albums & this song "Siúil A Rúin" is so far my favorite song by them with "the Pretty Maid & Dhéanainn Súgradh" right after it. Now it's time to move onto "Clannad In Concert 1979. It's going to be interesting to finally hear what they sound like live. Totally excited!! We shall see.....
They gave great concerts.
Divine song!
Sister and niece as the band is composed of 3 siblings (the Brennan's) and their twin uncles (the Duggan's). Enya was in the band until she left in 1981, and she is sibling to the Brennan's in the band.
This song resonates on so many different levels. So, evocative.......
wonderfull music thanks alot
you can`t beat a good irish song.
Great music, it really calms the soul and makes the world seem a better place.
Peace to all! Love this song.
Bellissimo questo pezzo. Sono ringiovanito di almeno 30 anni.
Grazie.
very sweet!!!
Lovely music :)
