    On Feb 24th, I saw a video which appeared on my CZcams feed of Kelsey Grammer crying in an interivew so I thought, "Hmm, what's this?" Well, that same day I went to see the movie after lunch and was so glad that I did. Fantastic movie!!

    I am an 80 year old great grandmother who was changed by that Jesus revolution. The movie was very true to the people who were affected by the authenticity of the Jesus people. Their example was was an inspiration to trust Jesus more with my life than I had allowed in the past. At 80 I teach a women’s bible study from the same teaching style that Chuck Smith taught on the radio for years. Learning to respect people where they are in their lives has served me well. I was so pleased with this movie that was so respectful to the people who were changed by the love that l received from the Jesus people. I gave it a 10!

    I'm going to see the film for myself Thursday, Lord willing and the creek don't rise (as they say, but considering the current weather that may be more than a saying!). I'm a fan of The Chosen, and it's good to see Christian filmmaking starting to mature (if that's the right word) and put out quality content rather than Hallmark Channel-level dross.
    I don't have the same theological beliefs as Smith or the Lauries (i.e. I'm not a Charismatic) but I did grow up in a small independent Christian church in the 60s and 70s (and went to a Christian college in '79) so from that perspective it should be interesting.

      I don't hold the same beliefs as Smith or the Lauries either, and I think the film does a wonderful job showcasing the specific theological beliefs of the characters through their actions as well as presenting Christianity without any denominational angles. I'm hoping we see more Christian content like this in the future, for the sake of having more well-structured theological exhibitions and genuinely enjoyable entertainment.

    My problem with not going to see this movie is that the man who plays Lonnie Frisbee is a devout catholic. I watched an interview with this man. He told how he went to Lonnies grave and prayed to Lonnie. He asked Lonnie if Lonnie thought he should play the part. He asked Lonnie to give him a sign. I guess he got his sign. I'm not at all interested in watching a movie where one of the actors went to a dead man's grave and was literally talking, and trying to communicate with the dead. Talking to the dead is what the Bible refers to as decromancy, which God forbids us to do. I will not attend this movie.

      @@timberw0lfstudios ~ Fantastic! Case for Christ is the true story of Lee Strobel’s conversion from atheism to Christianity as a lawyer/journalist. He deconstructs Jesus from a high level intellect; brain over heart. Like Dandelion Dust stars Barry Pepper & Mira Sorvino and is about adoption. Bella is written and directed by a gentleman from Mexico who came to the US and lived in college buildings while studying film. I’m not 100% on his story, but it’s in the bonus features. I’m going from memory; I haven’t seen it since it came out 16 years ago. A Hidden Life is brilliant. It may be the best faith-based film, though not necessarily for the general public. It doesn’t have any American stars and deals with real consequences to being true to your faith. Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life is solid too.

    • @timberw0lfstudios
      @timberw0lfstudios  Před rokem

      A very valid criticism. The two major plot conflicts especially (the fundamentalist church's transition into accepting the hippies and Lonnie Frisbee's egocentric craze, respectively) were very quickly overcome compared to other main conflicts. For myself, I felt that the personal conflicts between Greg and Cathe and their parents drove the majority of their character development and emotional tension and served as a better central conflict throughout the film (although I'll admit both cases eventually solve themselves anticlimactically with all parental figures converting/intending to convert). As a drama centered on the Jesus Movement at large, the religious conflict could've been more forefront, but in terms of historical accuracy I'm glad they showed as much conflict as they did.

    Why are Christians getting so excited about this film? It's good but not great. The film tries to be secular so badly (secular music ..there was tons of incredible Christian music that came out of this movement- Keith Green, etc). It almost feels ashamed or sheepish about the name of Jesus (EX: they pray "in His Name", they speak about this as "I don't want to loose "THIS THING". What's "THE THING" a relationship with Jesus OR (what the film pushed at end- FAMILY and MARRIAGE). And can we please stop the "get a car with Jesus" cliche of Christian films. This film is the blade runner of Christian film. Executed to aesthetic precision but hollow on story. The guys that made this film did the same thing in WoodLawn: we are kept out of the gymnasium as the revival happens and they stand outside saying 'SOMETHING IS HAPPENING IN THERE!". Well, SHOW US!. There are two spectrum ends of Christian film: Wannabee filmmakers (now Christian) that care more about being known and famous in the filmmaking culture in LA, OR, Christian filmmakers who are more about the message but ignore how to really make a film. One end is man-pleasing and prideful, the other is ignorant and lazy of how to craft a convincing story.

    • @timberw0lfstudios
      @timberw0lfstudios  Před rokem

      Thank you so much for sharing! You have many excellent points, especially regarding the spectrum of Christian filmmaking that's long been a standard too lowly held. You're correct that this film isn't a cinematic masterpiece -- I said so myself -- but compared to the often incompetently crafted, preachy, ill-masked sermons masquerading as films we've been sold in times past, I don't think it's hard to see why many in the Christian body are excited for a tightly written and well crafted movie presenting their ideological and theological premises in a realistic and (largely) historically accurate narrative.
      I didn't personally feel the name of Jesus was used reservedly, although I admit I could be overlooking that simply because it was refreshing to hear the name Jesus used in any way other than an expletive. Regarding the scene you quote between Greg and Cathe: I believe "The Thing" he's referencing is simply the good feeling/high of connecting with others in an emotionally stimulating environment, a feeling he equates to drug use seeing as that's been the only previous experience that felt this way. And this is, I feel, the emotional conflict the film spends the majority of it's runtime focused on: differentiating between true and false relationships and the difficult work that goes into creating a true one (whether that's with Jesus, an estranged parent, or a significant other).
      As for the "Get a car with Jesus" cliche, I have no refutation. I found the scene comedic and therefore enjoyed it.
      I take particular offense to the comparison between this film and Blade Runner and the accusation that both are hollow on story. Yours is certainly a dynamic opinion I'll admit I haven't heard before, although Blade Runner is clearly the superior film.
      As for showing instead of telling, I thought the film used Greg Laurie's protagonist to great effect as an emotional tether to help the audience experience more personally the effects of the Jesus Movement on an individual level, and there's nothing historically that I would've preferred to see other than exactly what we were shown.
      Again, the film isn't an example of cinematic mastery, but it's pleasing to see filmmakers in the Christian community finally take the time and make the effort to produce high quality content with a more nuanced and realistic approach to Christianity and related subject matter.
      Whew! Congratulations my friend, I believe this is the longest reply I've ever written on CZcams! Thank you very much for sharing your perspective on this film, I really appreciate it.
