The villains not dying thing is a symptom of two aspects of One Piece. One is that Oda really doesn't like to kill off characters. In almost 1100 chapters he's only killed roughly 5 named characters. The other has to do with who Luffy is as a person. He's all about dreams and one of the driving traits of his character is how much he's willing to fight not just for his own dream but for the ability of others to be able to pursue theirs, most notably his friends. Luffy doesn't kill his villains because they still have dreams that might be good at heart so as long as they're not hurting people anymore they can go pursue it.

Oda said once that when Luffy beats them, he (I forget the exact quote) basically ends their ambition and dream, which is why he doesn't need to kill them. It's true, for the most part. Almost everyone they beat has to change their ambition and life course. Some of them turn good, others just end up in a better situation, plenty are captured by the marines.
Mostly, from Oda's point of view, there's just so much more you can do with a villain than kill them. Think of how lame Impel Down would be if Luffy had been offing arc bosses.

The issue is that Oda will write a moment where a character heroically sacrifices their life for a cause only for that character to show up a few chapters/episodes later like "Never fear, I survived" and it completely takes away the weight of the previous moment.

From the gags and friendships and drawing style, any long-time manga fan would know it's not the type of manga that the protagonists would go kill a bunch of bad guys. City Hunter, the protagonist doesn't really kill people either if I remember correctly. But manga like Fist of the North Star which has a very serious tone, yes a lot of well-deserved killings.

Netflix's adaptation of One Piece succeeded due to Eiichiro Oda's vision and demands, that's why it's a sincere light-hearted adventure with good themes and characters, If Netflix's writers start to inject their own political agenda into the show, this ship will sink for sure.

The showrunners respect Oda and his story. I wasn't sure about one of them, Steven Maeda, but the other one, Matt Owens, is a megafan. Like a lot of other people, he feels like he owes his life to One Piece (like the guys on this podcast said it's antinihilism. A lot of people credit One Piece with taking them out of a suicidal place). He's been on streams with One Piece youtubers talking about the story and the world and what his plans are... we are in safe hands. The other guy, Steven Maeda, has proven himself in interviews about how they made the show. It seems like his job was to mediate between what Matt and Oda want, and what the writers and executives want. Which, somehow it seems like those things aren't worlds apart, but he seems to have done a great job at making the show even possible.
But beyond that, I've seen a lot of interviews with people on every rung of the ladder and overwhelmingly they talk about how they either already were or became invested in the source material. There's definitely a bit of astroturfing with the constant references to this being Oda's baby when really he just had veto power and occasional input, but there's also overwhelming sincerity, which comes through in the show.

Den Den Mushi (the phone snails) are awesome. Did you notice that the big ones kinda look like their owners?
They also usually try to mimic the face of the person on the other end when connected.
Also despite the amount of seasons signed up, I doubt they'll get this far in a hurry. Mauler notes that Luffy has the 'power to BE nice' and one of the people you've met already remarks on that that in particular is the most dangerous ability Luffy posesses... The ability to make friends like he does and inspire those who become his friends.
A small note on the butler dude, Captain Kuro. I really like that they did bring his mannerisms in on the show; in particular the way he pushes his glasses up with the back of his hand. Consider his weapon of choice is giant knives on his fingers. He can't push up his glasses normally and it's become such a habit he keeps doing it even when he's not wearing those gloves :D
Even if that is never explained the way it was in the manga/anime, and they could just as well have the guy not do that, they still committed to it.
And Zeff was not quite adapted completely... His hat needs to be MUCH taller...

Helmeppo and Axe Hand are very similar characters, approaching things in different ways.
It's understated in the LA, but the Morgans have butt chins. Meppo being a Neppo baby doesn't really hide it, but Axe Hand, despite no longer needing his Jaw brace, keeps it to hide his.
He also keeps his hair short, because it grows out like Meppo's, and he thinks it looks dumb. You get a little hint of this with his hair getting dishevelled during the LA fight. His hand was fine too BTW. He swapped it out for an axe to look intimidating, literally every part of his character design speaks to his insecurities, which are well founded when a straw hat rookie turns up and demolishes him

Drinker should watch the anime and realize nothing much stems from the live action show, even the story telling comes from the anime. What they did right, is simply doing justice to the manga, but all the foundation comes from the manga, even to following the plot. I watched One piece for a while. I always loved this show for how it created the same chemistry i was able to find in Star Wars New Hope or Firefly. Group of friends, all special, we get attached to all of them and love the chemistry and they take us on an adventure. I hated all live action anime production, but this one is a homerun. I have not watched the whole anime, just some of it incidentally during my sisters current watchthrough(about 50 - 100 episodes worth ranging from Chopper's intro to the defeat of Doflamingo). My biggest issue and why I will never watch is just the huge amounts of time wasted. From what I have seen, I am willing to bet you could cut 250+ episodes worth of time from the show without cutting anything of value (not including recaps of the last episode)
If the manga isn't going to waste my time so much, then I would consider reading it as I am interested in the story.

@@bus3957 This is a typical problem with anime whose source material is still ongoing. They _have_ to buy time one way or another so they don't catch up with the manga.
It's gotten a bit better in recent times as newer anime have actually discovered a seasonal format, but ongoing anime that started long before this shift (mostly One Piece and especially Naruto) are still doing the filler stuff.

    • @Klickor

@@bus3957each anime episode is usually 2-3 manga chapters. But both the manga and anime is weakly releases so after a while the anime will catch up if the manga is still ongoing. OP anime have been close behind the manga for ~2 decades now so have to extend the run time in any way possible. It is the most popular show ever so the studio do not want to take any breaks to let the manga pile up chapters. Some newer shows do a season a year so they get the ~2-3 chapters an episode they need for a good pacing if the manga is still ongoing.
There are fan edits of the show that cut away a lot of the repeated and drawn out content to make it more bearable. I have read the manga for 19 years now but took a pause on the anime a couple of years back and are waiting for the series to end and fan edits to be done to the complete show before I go back and watch it from episode 1 to the end. The anime have some amazing moments that it has built up to, enies lobby arc and marineford, that manages to hit you in the gut in way you didn't see coming at all but at the same time was there all the time. If the guys on open bar watch the anime until the enies lobby arc I am 100% sure they will praise the story telling at the end there to the skies. Not many if could see it coming, at least not the impact when it hit or even really explain why they felt so at the moment but many a tear was shed by OP fans there.

While reading One Piece you can feel that Oda loves this world he has created and the characters. So it makes a lot of sense that he would keep some control over it. This is also a reason behind it's length while he is great with foreshadowing some things he also throws in a lot of ideas that he didn't plan for. For example the whole "worst generation" was an idea he had and threw in and they are some of the most important characters for later arcs. If he has an idea he thinks is good he puts it in even if it adds another couple of years.

Ahsoka might be the most popular Disney+ show right now but I think the actual best Disney+ show at the moment is a South Korean show called “Moving”. It has
    - A strong female protagonist. Actually, TWO strong female protagonists, who are badass in their own different ways.
    - A proper Nick Fury type of character, whose age didn’t turn him into a pathetic suicidal old man but instead made him wiser, more cunning, evil, manipulative and dangerous.
    - Brutal and exciting action scenes.
    - Multiple romantic subplots that don’t feel forced.
    - Complex political plotline.
    - A redemption arc.

A couple of things about Ahsoka that bother me:
    1) It's kind of jarring how they just tell us that she might have these feelings like she wishes she were dead in episode 5 after we watched her for four episodes straight with a smug smirk of self-satisfaction stuck on her face at all times. It would have been funny if right after the scene where she solved the tomb raider mystery of moving the little discs until the orbs light up and then smirked like she just thought she was the smartest person in the galaxy right at that moment, if just then Anakin's ghost showed up and went, "Do you want to live or die?" and she suddenly was like "I don't know..." It wouldn't have been any less jarring at that moment than it was planted in the fifth episode for no reason.
    2) Episode 5 contrasted Anakin and Ahsoka during the clone wars by showing us that Anakin hints becoming evil as he's like "Come on, let's go War some more in the Stars, because it's fun!" and Ahsoka was totally good because she was like, "I care about people and don't want them to die." And I'm just wondering if Dave Filloni forgot the plot of Revenge of the Sith.
I thought the whole concept of turning his back on his master because he thought he knew better and didn't want people to die was basically Anakin's entire path to the dark side. But now Disney's revisionist girl-boss history of Star Wars shows us that Anakin turned evil because he just didn't care enough, and if he only turned on the Jedi because he thought he knew better than them and could stop the people he cared about from dying, that would have _saved_ him from turning to the dark side! Thank goodness we had a Disney patented plank of wood help explain the difference to us toxic fans.

    • @darkfoxx133
      @darkfoxx133 Před 8 měsíci

I find something fast paced when its full of impactful scenes that push the plot forward in some way, reiterating things and showing flashbacks or episodes where characters have romantic subplots that lead nowhere, or are doing little side things that aren't connected to anything or used for character growth I consider a part of bad pacing, one pace removes a large part of that from the abysmally paced anime. At times there's almost too many ideas being thrown and the show ends up cluttered by how much shit is happening and how fast. when they introduce an average of 3 characters an episode that have actual plot value, and are interesting either in a symbolic design (check out MR. 3 his face is literally the au oum symbol which has to do with being 2/3rds enlightened I believe) or with usually pretty damn original backstories(just forget about Usopps plz lol) then I think the show/manga is doing enough to keep your attention at almost all times. There are definitely slow parts every so often, or parts that are dragged out a bit. But nothing compared to some other shows like GOT or TWD at times.

But more importantly the plot looks like an evil conqueror is coming for Atlantis so the king (Aquaman) has to reunite with his estranged brother to stop him. It's a painfully simple plot but if they execute on it well it could be actually be quite good! If they don't execute though then it'll be a dud. When you have a simple, tried and true setup then it all comes down to execution.

The attack on titan "drama" is overblown like most things when it comes to people flipping out on social media, its okay to disagree with choices made, I 100% dont mind that at all. AOT was originally supposed to be a shorter manga but there was so much positive attention on the manga, that yams kept it going because he was essentially inspired by the love he got from readers, the story was always written to have a bitter sweet ending. The fact that AOT blew up as a manga, and anime, is honestly such a blessing, because it left an impact on a lot of people(hell it impacted the manga/anime industry as well). I was reading AOT from the first volume, the bitter hurts, but thats because I got very invested in the story and the characters. Thats what makes a bittersweet ending, hit so much harder.

First of all, love One Piece. My absolute favourite character is Zoro, the swordsman. Just a great character. I'm surprised though that Emily Rudd's character is fairly likeable. Normally I hate that archetype of character, chief example being Gotham's Catwoman. Absolutely loathed that character. I do admit that for One Piece, you need to know that it's based on an Anime and thus give it a few concessions i.e. the characters literally say each move they're about to make, I also love how this is turned into a little bit of a running joke as well. The earnestness of the performances also makes the series quite charming. I damn near cried when I watched the episode with Sanji and his father figure. That twist was something I actually didn't see coming tbh.
Secondly, yeah I got really excited about hearing about Ahsoka episode 5 and I even went back and watched Episode 4 in preparation that Episode 5 would be mind-blowing. Which is was... but more in the suicidal version of blowing your mind out. The whole episode was terrible. I loved the 'member berries. I even forgave the whole "TP to the time between worlds or whatever" but that bit was maybe one third of the bloody episode and the rest was just talking heads. I got bored and skipped it. Also the actress who plays Sabine is terrible. The actress who plays Hera is terrible, basically everyone except Ray Stevenson, his evil padawan and Hayden Christiansen was horrible. The pacing of the entire thing is miserable as well. (Oh I wrote a slightly more expanded version of the second comment on Reddit. Predictably, I've been downvoted to hell and people are pretty butt hurt about it.)There are a lot of theories what Ahsoka was taught by Anakin there, and how she was to overcome her past trauma but the real lesson that he taught her was this:
Disney can absolutely continue dressing up rotten vegetables as premium Wagyu A5 and their target audience will lap it up, pay a thousand dollars for it and justify it in any way possible even if it means sacrificing their (remaining vestiges of) sanity...

Lending to the actors Oda once gave in an SBS the nationalities of each Straw Hat and he said Luffy was from Brazil. And funny enough Luffy's actor is Mexican. To reflect how big the world of One Piece characters in LA have wildly different accents. So I can only imagine Oda wanted a Spanish/South American actor for Luffy. While Jacob Romero is more so Carribean he is black and Oda placed Usopp's nationality as South African. So who knows we might be getting a Robin with a Russian accent.
Either way you can see that muko spirit of Japan who are legit not afraid to indulge in qualities and cultures of the rest of the world for the sake of their stories. A good portion of the crew including Sanji and Robin incorporate French and Spanish into their attack names. This is something some garbo American director would have white washed in a heartbeat.

Cowboy bebop had it more light heart and fun moments but its was like putting the departed(Leonardo DiCaprio), serpico(cop movie), and top tier indie drama an making it a show. Anime is more of style then a genre so netflix failed to understand that.

    Spoilers for Onepiece Season 1:
Once of my favorite scenes in the Onepiece anime is during the fish arc with Nami. Initially she's very brash, she keeps all her problems close to the chest, and she wants to do everything herself. She's made the village she lives in her home, and the townspeople love her the same. The pirates take over, and she tries to strike a deal with them where she'll do everything herself and bribe them to leave and not ransack the town. She spends her whole childhood and teenage years stealing, doing wrong, and trying to make things right. Come current day, and she's almost got it all, and she's a total bitch to Luffy because he's another pirate come to make her town a mess for his own gain. She heads back to her treasure, and the Navy had been working with Arlong to get her treasure for themselves and for him. The town found out and planned to march in, against Nami's wishes of keeping them safe, and she had no means of stopping them or Arlong. When Luffy comes by, she refuses him at first, but breaks down and asks for his help. His response is to take his hat that he never lets anyone near, put it on her head, and march in the direction of Arlong to kick his ass. Onepiece gets worse as the story goes on and on because the author plays a lot of it by ear, but there are some surprisingly heavy-hitting scenes in the show that ALMOST make the 1000 or so episodes worth checking out.

If you told me in January of 2021 that the adaptations of Cowboy Bebop and Wheel of Time would turn out terrible and the most difficult to adapt manga of all time would turn out pretty damn good. I would have bet against you and lost a lot of money.
It's not perfect, a fair bit of story and emotional impact is lost in abridging, think the theatrical cuts of Lord of the Rings vs the original books, but weigh that against finally having an entry point to the series that isn't so fucking daunting and still gives a taste of why we've been aggressively pushing for people to read this story for decades.
It is great to see so many people who would never give the manga, the anime, or even One Pace a chance finally diving in.

I had a few issues with One Piece the first watch through, because I was playing a game at the same time, and it was on this second watch through that most of these criticisms evaporated when I realized there were a few lines and moments I missed or didn't really think about the first time that made me like it a lot more. There was even a detail in episode 3 with Nami that I thought was out of character given what we learn in episode 7, but watching it back again, I noticed another detail in that same scene that assuming I haven't just misinterpreted it, actually bolsters her character instead of being an inconsistency. In episode 3, I also liked that she had more than a few lines of dialogue that are very interesting coming from her specifically taking into account episode 7. On a first watch through, a lot of what she says may just seem like normal words of encouragement that anyone can come out with
