(20) Manual Transmission: Bite Point , High and Low Clutch Engagement

  • You don't need to know how a clutch works mechanically to drive a manual transmission but you should know what you are looking for and feeling when pressing your clutch. It is very helpful to understand how an engagement point (bite point) may feel different from car to car and how you may have to change the way you use your clutch and gas to suit that bite point. This is especially useful when you are teaching yourself how to drive from video or reading.

    Thanks for bringing back your old videos :). Your channel really focuses on clutch control more than anything else. I've now gotten better parking at my spot at home and work. Both are on small inclines so using the clutch properly has helped me work with gravity and conquer that fear of rolling backwards

    I just had my clutch replaced after 20y and 237k miles. The old clutch bite point was higher than the new one and the engagement transition was much smoother on the old one. I was researching this point and found your video. Thanks for the info!

      Hi yes it is like old brake pads vs new brake pads the old clutch doesn't have good friction material anymore/worn out so it just smoothly engages. The new clutch has new friction material like a new brake pad so it will be more grabby and easy to stall.

    Using CZcams to teach myself manual. Almost all assume you have a handbrake - I have a new car with an electronic “finger” brake which does not function like a handbrake.
    Your video is the first not to mention a handbrake yay! Very helpful & informative too. I have a high bite point - on hill starts I get to my high bite point with foot on brake, then go to throttle as bite keeps me from rolling back:)
    Knowing I have a high bite point is important. Wish I would have watch your video a month ago:)

    Good video format.
    May I just point out; that at 10 mins in, with regard to hill starts, that's what the hand brake is for - to stop rolling backwards.
    You apply the hand brake when stopped on a hill. Your clutch is pressed in and you have first gear selected. Then as you 'give gas' (or rev it as we say here in the UK) release the clutch Up to the 'biting point' you'll feel the car start to want to move. That's when you release the hand brake and you will move off.

      Many manual America cars and trucks never came with a handbrake. Almost every truck sold with a bench seat never had a handbrake. Most people here do not use a handbrake for anything but the most steep hills. I have seen people driving manual here and I could tell they learned from youtube. They only knew how to gas then clutch and were using their handbrake on almost every incline because handbrakes and gas before clutch is the only thing that is taught on youtube.       Drive Manual Well I never knew that. That some cars in the US didn't have a handbrake. You learn something new everyday.

      Thanks and they actually do have the braking mechanism but it is used as a foot parking brake so there is a 4th pedal left of the clutch that you press down and that activates the rear brake like a handbrake. You can see it in some of the pics

    Will the engagement point change if you do a hydraulic flush ? Like flush the brake fluid from the clutch and calipers ? I think air got in so I'm going to try it differently today and feel it out . Clutch had a halfish engagement point before now you have to push the pedal down farther . Air right ?

    Just drove a camaro ss and I was used to driving a mustang noticed clutch on mustang is in a low range but high on the camaro. After thinking about it truly I'm more comfortable with driving the mustang up a hill because the clutch engages faster but when my friend drove I'd think wow guy is riding my clutch! But after driving his car I seemed to be more hesitant on starts because I would pull half way and the vehicle would not creep in first. After a few drives I got this trick
    READY * SET * GO
    Mustang: READY clutch in 1st gear/ SET gas / GO clutch out
    Camaro: READY clutch in 1st gear/ SET halfway out clutch/ gas GO clutch out

    Awesome video. My 2004 accord has a bite point about an inch off the floor. It bites like hell and dont slip must be normal?

      No, that means there’s no pressure in the clutch line, either your clutch master cylinder is low or out of fluid, air in the clutch line and needs to be bled, or you have a leak in the clutch line

    Hi there. Thank you so much for this detailed info. I bought a Toyota 2019 corolla sxe manual about a year ago. it only has 8000 miles but I have hated the clutch experience. I have driven manual all my life but only used cars, this is my first new car. I almost regret it. The clutch was too high since the begining and it bit as if there was less than the 2" of margin in the bite. It seemed that i could only go high speed or very low speed at take off, no middle speed. That was the only way to not stall. Do you have an opinion on what was going on? Now is more at the middle length of the clutch travel but it seems to do the same thing about the speed. Hope I explain myself. I don't know much about this subject but thanks to you I am able to ask this question now.

      if it is slipping maybe the parts are wrong or the clutch is not engaging fully for whatever reason

    So I can fully drop the clutch to the point before the engagement point, then slowly release the clutch throughout the engagement point and then i can fully drop the clutch, foot off after its out of the engagement point?

    Thanks for the video.
    We have a manual five-speed 2001 Toyota Corolla CE that was recently involved in a crash. It wasn't my fault, but the other driver's insurance is making it a total loss primarily because of its age. (It can still be driven, though it feels off.) We do have the option to keep it, but we don't really want to drive around with damage like that-dents and scuffs are one thing, but "actual" damage from a collision is something else. lol We are getting a settlement in the next couple of days, though, and will be buying a used manual five-speed 2001 Ford Focus ZX3.
    From watching this video, the Toyota's clutch engagement point would fall under low. Now, we test drove the Ford and noticed we had to bring our foot up higher, meaning the engagement point is on the high side. Don't know if that's by design, though, or if the clutch is worn, both of which were mentioned in this video. We'll have it checked. If it's by design, though, I wonder if it could be adjusted to be on the low side.

      A couple of people have left comments that various ford cars have higher clutch engagement points so it is best to get it checked just to make sure. From my experience you usually can't adjust them

      @@DriveManual It shouldn't take too long to get used to. Helps that we already know how to drive a manual.
      When I first started officially driving with a learner's permit back in 2009, well, that was a different story, as I kept killing the car when my mom was teaching me. And then hills were even more fun once I was a little more experienced, but still learning. I was able to get going on them, but not without getting burnt clutch smell. lol I eventually became a pro, though.

      yes, If you don't clutch all the way down you can hurt your clutch disk and selector fork

    very informative and useful information! thank you for the videos i have watched all of them! I have a question however. I have been driving my 2005 wrx for a little over a month now and i have gotten a lot better at manual driving, but this is my first stick shift. I have noticed the bite point of the clutch has moved closer to the top of the arc. Is this from the bad driving habits i had when first starting and did I do enough damage to cause this to change? is it adjustable? I don't believe I ever smoked the clutch or did anything immensely harsh on my clutch. let me know what you think! thanks!

      Hi it's so hard to give answer for that. Most people don't notice where their clutch engages when learning and unless they are specially asked or that is pointed out they may not know it was biting lower or near the top when they first start driving so are you sure it moved or was it always around that point? I drove a Legace I think it was a 2010 and I noticed right away the clutch in that car bites fairly high like around 1/2 way mark if I remember but the owner bought it used and wasn't sure how new the clutch was but it was very noticeable to me so it could be subaru bites a little higher from the factory I am not sure as I have only driven 1 subaru. But if you are sure it has moved and it is closer to the top then you probaly put some wear on it.
      It is very easy to do with just excessive riding the clutch and giving too much gas when first learning but it is just something you have to do to learn there is no real way around it. I wouldn't worry about it. Really only when the clutch slips then you need to change it. One of the other problems when learning is not just wear, on the clutch you can often get
      "clutch chatter" when you are bring up the clutch the bite point you will feel it is kind of rough and may make a chatter sound or you may even feel it is not smooth there are some videos here but nothing really good

      I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it moved. However it seems that in reverse gear it's not any different than it was, and the bite is lower. Maybe I am crazy but I probably did cause some wear since I began. Well I was told that the clutch was replaced 160k km/100k miles ago but I don't have the paperwork for that so it could be as old as the car (175k miles). Hopefully as I progress I will cause minimal wear in the future and have to avoid replacement! Your videos have helped me a ton!

      hi you make a good point so in reverse gear most of the time the bite point is more obvious. In some cars you can even feel it kinda click there if you just push your clutch in and out around the bite point in reverse. But it isn't like that in forward it can be much smoother and sometimes even hard to feel and edge where it wants to bite like the red box in this video. If you feel it low on the reverse then that is the true bite point. if it is really worn it will be high whichever gear you are in. Yeah 175 miles would be a lot for a original clutch but don't worry about it unless it is slipping or you feel a lot of chatter. Really the most wear happens in the first couple of hours of learning how to drive that is when you don't really know anything and how to use your feet so I'm sure you will be fine. The worst thing that kills clutches fast are panic starts that is when you are at a stop and cars come up behind and you panic and ride your clutch pedal around the bite point while giving a ton of gas like 3500rpm just to get the car moving.

    I'm having problems with my Mirage G4 (manual) it has low and quick bite that when you release the clutch without gas it stalls immediately specially when on reverse bite point's very sensitive I guess. What should I do to improve it?

      do you use your ankle to reach the bite point or you use your whole leg to lift up?

      Drive Manual usually press and release with my whole leg that's how I'm used to but I tried doing it with my ankle and still engine kept stalling so I'm assuming that maybe there must be clutch adjustments to be done?

      I was teaching someone who in the first 10 min he kept going past the bite point using his ankle and was because it is really a precise movement and he was just floating past it. Do you move your foot in steps or like 1 smooth movement. If you move it in one smooth movement to the bite point try moving it in steps or inches and say it out loud "1 inch ,2 inch, 3 inch, bite" that way you get used to stopping your foot at the bite point and not floating past it. Use your ankle and try that and let me know it may take 10 times before you get it. Then if it works do it like 50 times so your foot naturally knows where to stop without you having to think too much about it. If iyou still have problem maybe it is your clutch but impossible to tell from here. If the clutch bite is close to the floor no reason to not use your ankle up to the bite point.

    I am also having trouble finding the biting point of my ae92. when i releasing the clutch halfway the engine vibrates. i press the accelerator and release the clutch at the same time. am i doing right?

    I thought a low end engagement was bad. Now that it has been adjusted I have to stretch my legs further making it harder. I prefer higher engagement allows for a more relaxed leg

    So if my clutch is disengaging basically at the floor wouldn't that mean it's a worn out clutch? But have tons of peddle play can this be adjusted to where it isn't gonna burn the clutch out?

      hi this is really if everything is working as it should and if you have play or excessive play or any other issues there may not be anything wrong with your clutch. For example some honda clutch brackets tend to crack and when you press the clutch pedal instead of the pedal making the clutch work as it should you are really just bending the pedal bracket and it could give a feeling of the clutch having to pushed all the way to the floor to disengage but really its because the pedal is not getting enough travel because the pedal is broken....stuff like that ...does that make sense? So this video is just in general to give you idea what to look for.
