Thin Lizzy was a special band and that period was the apex of the classic lineup! The hardback book is a fitting tribute to that time :)

It's the greatest remix of anything I've ever heard. It sounds huge, dynamic, powerful, alive and breathing. An actual concert in your living room, and no surround sound needed! And you know what, it doesn't sound "modern". It's not "cleaned up for modern audiences", or a "different interpretation". It's Live and Dangerous as we know it, but better. Beats whatever the hell Giles Martin has been up to.
I also think it's a great box set. A reasonable size (i.e. not the size of a 12 inch record, which most CD collectors are deliberately trying to avoid), and all the extra content is both interesting and enjoyable music in its own right. The book is a great read. I could do without 20-second studio outtakes, crappy-sounding demos, and bootleg live recordings personally, so most deluxe sets don't do it for me, but the material is actually there to warrant 8 discs with this album. I'm kind of tempted, now, to get the very similar Space Ritual box set, although I'm not quite as fond of that album.

Saw Thin Lizzy back in May 1975 at the Hammersmith Odeon. They were "supporting" (believe it or not!) Bachman Turner Overdrive. Phil, as ever the excellent front man of the band. And the boys did not disappoint and played a brilliant set. Philip Paris Lynott - May You Rest In Peace sir.

Bought the original album when it came out in 1978 as a teenager and I never get tried of it, it has been my favorite live album ever since. I think this new cd box set is excellent and essential for any Thin Lizzy fan or live rock album lovers!
Phil I would like to suggest a show with you , Pete Pardo, Martin Popoff and others, if possible, rating your favorite live album between
Thin Lizzy Live And Dangerous, Deep Purple Made In Japan, UFO Strangers In The Night, MotorHead No Sleep Til Hammerstein, Iron Maiden Live After Death and a wild card or 2 thrown in.
I always enjoy your podcast. Thanks for your time and effort in doing these shows.

I bought it. I liked the original album. Saw that line up of the group at least three times. The box is good, providing you don’t mind similar set lists occurring - which I don’t, as they differ, subtly. I remember standing next to Phil Lynott at the bar in The Winning Post in twickenham 1976 ( I think, could be earlier ) 😊

I know alot of people complain about the touch up work done in the studio. I don't care when it creates something like this album or Kiss Alive 1n2 or Frampton Comes Alive. Wings Over America.. Dio era Black Sabbath Live Evil sounds great. Dozens more. If touching up in the studio yields a superior product, then I am all for it.

That's a fitting tribute to a proper rock band. I bought Live & Dangerous back in the 80s on vinyl, and I must have almost worn it out by now !
It's up there with Live at Leeds ( The Who ) and Irish Tour ( Rory Gallagher ) as the best live albums ever.

HI Phil, Glad you eventually managed to get hold of a copy of the Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous Box Set. I agree with all you say, Lizzy were a superb band and My favourite line up is the one on the Box Set with Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham on guitars. I saw this line up live on three occasions, on the Johnny the Fox, Bad Reputation and Live & Dangerous tours and they are some of my best live gig memories. I also saw the Gary Moore and Snowy White line ups, which were great, but the Robertson, Gorham line will always be my favourite.

One of THE best live albums of the 70s surely. Saw Lizzy at an unusual place which turned out to be an ice rink in the town of Kirkcaldy in Fife - very early 80s? Good gig - originally was going to be Genesis but they pulled out for whatever reason and Lizzy came instead! Anybody else remember this I wonder.

Hi Phil - I have just this second jumped onto Amazon and bought it. $148 AUD - not cheap, but a bargain compared to what people are asking for it around the traps. Will be my Christmas present 🙂. I have the original CD, and it is without doubt one of the greatest live albums ever, irrespective of what people said about the recording - the songs just kept coming at you one after another, and it just rocks hard. Its a classic. I wish the Jethro Tull Box Set series would be reissued in the same way, as I am about 4 short of the set. Anyway - thanks for the heads up on this, and the great review. Cheers Doug

Some might say live and dangerous in the studio but what an album and what a band! Saw various tours from 1975 on. You wanted to be in a band when you saw them. Wielding a Les Paul or a Fender bass. Iron Maiden certainly did and Def Leppard to name but 2. Great frontman and lyricist. Guitar players at their best and always Brian Downey.

I'm a bit annoyed that this release, arguably Lizzy's most famous album given it sold in the region of 600k records in the UK alone, did not the vinyl treatment. Sure, we got one of the Hammy gigs on RSD, but surely it was a no brainer to release this on vinyl yet this did not happen. In context, the Vagabonds from the Western World is getting the royal treatment. A vinyl and CD boxset, plus a two (coloured) LP version.

Thin Lizzy are my favourite rock band of all time, so putting my bias to one side, I still would say its the best live album of all time.
Its not tampered with in the studio by producer Tony Visconti as much as some people say. I have the bootleg from Philadelphia that most of the tracks were taken from, and there is hardly any difference that I can tell, obviously the tracks sound top notch on the official record as they used the master tapes, the bootleg sounds good but sound quality is not 100%.
Southbound on the album was recorded during a soundcheck, and mixed in to sound like it was played to the audience.
During the original concerts that most of L&D was made up from Jailbreak was never the opening song, believe it or not that was Soldier of fortune, hence why when you hear Jailbreak start a snippet of the beginning is not present.
All these little edits and mixes to make up the album I think is probably why it gets the reputation its been tinkered with a lot, but the actual music has hardly been touched.
L&D in my mind came out at a perfect time showcasing a band who were at their peak, it gave potential fans a chance to see what Thin Lizzy were all about.
It would be false to say it was all downhill for the band after that because they still went onto having hit singles and albums. But most fans always feel the L&D line up was the best which came to an end when Brian Robertson left sadly after L&D was released, but the follow up studio album was awesome so it was hardly the end of Lizzy.
Phil Lynott and the band are sorely missed thats a fact.

I am glad that you managed to get your copy. I think they must have done a second run on it, I picked up mine as soon as I saw it at the proper price too a couple of weeks ago.
So now they've fully expanded three of the best rock live albums, "Space Ritual", "Strangers In The Night" and "Live and Dangerous", which others would like to see done? I think there's a lot of cut tracks from the two main Blue Oyster Cult live albums "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees" and "Some Enchanted Evening", it would be interesting to see what was cut from those.
I believe "Bursting Out" is the next Tull album to get the "deluxe" treatment, that's one I'm interested in seeing - albeit they've released a huge amount of live material in the other deluxe editions anyway.

I think the best rock live album was Deep Purple's Made In Japan, which is available as a 3 CD set "Live In Japan" which gives almost the whole of the 3 concerts the original was compiled from. (I think they had to drop one track from each show to fit the time restrictions). Always renowned for their improvisation, the three concerts are more different than you might expect.

I’d like the deluxe treatment on “Unleashed In the East” and AC/DC’s “If You Want Blood”.

Bad rep , for me is their greatest album
    It flows brilliantly
Although from Vagabonds to Chinatown, there wasn't a bad album , just different in places.
Shameful to think they are not entered into the Rock n roll hall of fame , more than Shameful verging on criminal.

The only problem I have with this 8CD box is the fact that there is no concert with Gary Moore on it, or is it?

Gary played his first dates in August 1978 until July 1979. July 6: Gary Moore fails to arrive.
July 18, 1979: First gig with Midge Ure.

Glad you found a copy...cheers...so if you listen closely and compare the concerts to the album you realize that Visconti is either an idiot or at the very least, a vindictive twat. The 'fixing' of the album was minimal and not the 70, 80 percent Visconti claims. But now the narrative is out there and its hard to change people's perception, so if you have the box set, listen for yourselves

Tony Visconti produced the album... Everything? Not the drums.
Eddie Kramer said the same about Kiss Alive! Not the drums.
What's the difference. Who cares. But Eddie and Tony: BEST SOUND
