  • When I got this piano it was unplayable, the keys would not return once pressed. Coupled with the old rumours and speculation of the mk7 piano I was thinking have I bought something that is not going to repairable? What have I got myself into.
Note: the screwdriver was selected as it was marginally larger than the key pin. I do have key pin easing plyers, but I was scared that this might result in uneven compression on each side, moving the key. Using a cylinder means equal pressure is applied to each side....So in theory I have not changed the angle of the keys.
I suspect this is a humidity issue, I believe this piano was manufactured in the USA in the summer. So once it arrived in the UK, the wetter climate may result in the wood swelling? I wonder if this is something designed into the electric pianos being produced now.
I have recently got my hands on this MK7 Rhodes suitcase piano. I thought it would make an interesting series of videos looking at this piano and getting it looking and playing as it should be.
The first time I heard about this piano was in the rules of a forum stating not to mention this piano. Googling around at the time, there was almost no information about this piano at all. It is also interesting that some specialist websites do not mention this piano at all in the history of the electric piano even now.
The odd forum post I did find about this piano, seemed to be more speculation than fact or first hand experience. My goal here is to shine some light on this as a product and help reduce any speculation, maybe it will help other owners to get the most of the piano.

I'd say there's plenty of life left in the action of this Piana. (It's a movie quote).

That key looks especially warped that’s definitely not a manufacturing issue.
Also, that hinged lid is a very cool innovation to the rhodes design.

I do wonder why that one was so bad. I guess it could be down to the wood. As you say I am sure it left the factory straight and plying well. I think the UK weather might have been a shock when compared to the dry Cali air.
The hinged lid is good - I think the hinges are standard kitchen cupboard hinges. They have a circular cutout, why reinvent the wheel.

IMO this isn't a huge issue, I think its more to do with wooden keys than poor manufacturing. I used to have a Yamaha CP60M, which had a great wooden action. I remember the keys would stick a bit sometimes, but playing the action helped restore it in my case. The tolerances have to be just so, don't they? It's a bit of an art and a science.

I agree, I suspect humidity might be a factor. Or just how the wood settles over time.
Not the end of the world, and you are right the more it is played the easier it gets.

A couple of very light silicone in an eye dropper on the top of the pin. NOT regular silicone.
