  • I do not own this music nor the video. I added the lyrics to the song by the great duo done at Stargazing Live 2018. This is for Yr10 Science. Our girls will be amazed by our anthropocentric ideology and sing along. Professor Cox, thank you for inspiring the next generation of astronomers in Australia. Tim Minchin, thank you for the music.

    'Billion' vs. 'trillion'...
In short scale 'billion' is 1,000,000,000, yes, but in long scale 'billion' is 1,000,000,000,000, which is called 'trillion' in short scale. The Pythons are old enough that even though the Galaxy song was released in 1983, after the UK formally adopted short scale in 1974, 'billion' is a not-unreasonable word to use.

It would be the creationists that hate Minchin, so they follow in droves just to have their daily dose of their horrendously need to hate a man that couldn't give 2 shits about them.

Very nice, but Brian Cox was wrong to state the earth's rotation speed is closer to 1000 miles per hour than 900. The composer would have been told that the circumference of the earth is 21600 nautical miles (360 degrees x 60 nautical miles per degree). In 24 hours (approximately) per revolution, that gives 360 x60 / 24 = 900 nautical miles per hour. Using land miles (statute miles, where 1 mile = 1.609344 km) the speed would indeed be about 1000 mph (40000 km / 1.609344 / 24 = 1035.6 mph approx.), but as 'a thousand miles an hour' scans just as well as '900 miles an hour', the composer, or, at least, his adviser, clearly had nautical miles in mind.

Except mi and NM are distinctly different units and you would not say miles when referring to nautical miles. Nor would you use it as a unit of speed when referring to nautical miles but instead would use knots

@@FoxDren Good points, but when referring to a distance which is the result of rotation, it makes sense to use the distance specifically created for such action, and not necessarily with qualification. Therefore, 'miles' should be readily understood to be 'nautical miles'. Admittedly, I don't know whether rocket scientists have ever used nautical miles, and, if they have, if they have ever just referred to them simply as miles. But in a song lyric, I am sure that the omission is acceptable. If Brian Cox wants to attack any ambiguity, well and good, although I would still argue that as the speed is not necessarily wrong, the lyric has not been compromised. Also, as the knot is just a shorthand way of saying nautical mile per hour, it does not have to be used all the time, especially when composing a song lyric. The expression '900 miles per hour' is not wrong; it is just longer than '900 knots'. Brevity is not always desirable (although I wish I could achieve it; I probably should simply have said at the start that the song refers to nautical miles per hour.)
