Toni Collette should have won the Oscar for her acting in this movie.
Definitely.
I saw this in theater when it came out. During that one scene (you know the one!) you could literally hear a pin drop because everyone was so shocked at what just happened! It was the best!!!!
One of the few healthy thinga my mom and I had in common was a love for horror. Got to see this with her before she passed away this year. She had short term memory loss, so she could watch it more than once and never remember much past the next day. She loved it. I can see her smiling now.
This probably the best movie I'll never watch again. Superbly written. Superbly Directed. Superbly Acted. And superbly off the deep end.
I was in awe of Toni Collette going off on Peter at the dinner table. As a recipient of some _motherly_ scoldings, that scene stuck with me the most
"Hereditary"(2018) is a supernatural horror movie masterpiece! This is probably the best 10's movie for this Kind! The ending scene of the movie was inspiring and very creepy!
The acting in this film is phenomenal and is definitely a big reason why it's so effective. Everyone did incredible, especially Toni Collette. Holy hell! The grief and rage and horror she feels throughout the movie, she portrays it all perfectly. That look of pure hatred and disgust she gives Peter at the dinner table. 😳 She was absolutely robbed, cheated out of an Oscar.
Truly an unsettling masterpiece. I revisit it ever so often
I truly believe that Hereditary is the scariest movie since The Exorcist
@@DorisDay-lw4xsThere is nothing mediocre about The Exorcist lmao
Hereditary is the only movie that I ever woke up at 2 am with it still messing with my head. Love to see a video on Midsommar. Absolutely love that movie.
I remember watching this movie in the cinema when it was originally released, not really knowing what the plot entailed, and pretty much being shocked at THAT scene. It still haunts me, years later! 😱
Love the buildup throughout the film
I saw the last few minutes when dude was being stalked, ceeping through his house, chased, and then the eventual jump out the window part. I was like 'WHAT the HELL was this spooky sh*t?!'
I will stand by this is the greatest horror film ever made. Whether or not you enjoy Ari Aster movies, I think that man is inarguably a genius.
There's some shitty takes in this comment section lol.
The moms face scared the hell out of meet she definitely played her part well
When she was cutting her head off lol ?
@@JayRob2161 towards the end in the attic she was sawing at her neck with a wire and her head fell off which made Peter jump out the window
@@chaddross1920 lol I thought I was the only one that thought her face looked crazy as hell
@@JayRob2161 in every scene before she went crazy

I went in cold as well. This movie floored me. Great script, great cast, and great director. Few movies have had me thinking about them after they ended like Hereditary did.
I watched this movie and just thought ehh. I think I need to re-watch it......
If someone told me they were about to watch HEREDITARY, I would say this is a movie you will never forget!
The tricks they did with light and shadow was just masterful. The DP on this is a craftsman in every sense of the word.
Why no mention of the history of witchcraft in the family? Did I miss something?
So many great things about this film. The acting, cinematography and concept. Unfortunately for me it’s no masterpiece. The last 10 minutes were eye rolling especially that ridiculously campy finale in the tree house. Holy Rosemary’s Baby 😂 It was a pretty big letdown considering what led up to it. Also the woman from the grief group was SO painfully obvious she should have been wearing a t-shirt that said VILLAIN on it. Beautiful looking though and damn Toni Collette 🏆
Charlie's death was literally where I turned the movie off. Now I'm just gonna see the reviews. I wasn't ready and don't think I'm ready for the rest.
Dope video, dope movie
When peter goes home and is just there laying in bed with his little sister dead body in the car so his parents have to find her in the morning i was frozen in my seat
While it’s a very strange, slow, and visually shocking movie at some points, it is by no means scary. Lots of small details you need to notice to really take in the creep factor that you can only notice by watching “things you missed” videos or watching over and over.
This movie had potential, but the ending was so clichéd, it made me mad. My friend and I left the theater angry because of the wasted potential. Even after all these years, the ending still pisses me off. I love the first and second acts, but the third just had me going, "We've seen this all before. The Ring did that. Haunting did that. Amityville did that." If they would've reworked the finale, I would've walked away loving this movie.
I'll never forget the first time I watched this absolute masterpiece
What did you deconstruct here exactly?
something happened when i saw it , but put me to sleep
probably the most viscerally frightening and uncomfortable movies I’ve ever seen
Awesome movie 😈
When I First Saw Hereditary On Showtime Back In 2020/2021 This Movie Paralyzed Me Fear.
Where is there a movie theater with a bar? Directions please.
Studio 1, Portland, OR
Didn’t see it in the theater but when I did see it overall the movie creepy weird lol I like it but had to watch many times to understand what was going on
This movie messed with my mind. Haven't been able to do a repeat viewing to this point.
One of the best horror movies
This is one of the most messed up horror movies ever made.
Bro this movie fkd me up 😅 , me looking at the ceiling wall corners every night 😂, this movie and Smile ! That was pure nightmare fuel
It was boring.
My personal favorite
Alex Wolff was good here, and even better in Pig from 2018 🙂
Toni should’ve got an Oscar.
Deconstruct the movie Lords of Salem. Please and thank you.
This movie still fucks me up.
Honestly, i think the reason "that scene" hits so hard for so many people is the subversion.
The marketing of the movie & first third of the movie hinged on the "creepy kid" trope, so the expectatoon was it was a "creepy kid = evil" movie...but then they kill off the kid & the audience doesn't know where it's going next.
It's also dark, and something that was set up so that the audience could see easily how things led there, almost spoonfed by chekov's nut allergy.
This movie, Midsommar and Strange Things About the Johnson's are quite disturbing
I can’t watch it again. It’s just sad. Not really scary. Depressing .
Its better to watch this movie with no trailer or promo
Interesting. I felt that the impact of the subversion scene worked better if people walked in with the trailer in mind, since the trailer was part of setting up that subversion.
BTW they don't film in order of scenes.
Hot take, saw it in theaters and wasn't that impressed. People love this film. They had some really good parts, horror and thrilling. Haven't revisited, though.
Rewaaaaatch
That’s a good take
True. It’s a very strange and visually shocking movie at some points, however, it is by no means scary. Lots of small details you need to notice to really take in the creep factor that you can only notice by watching “things you missed” videos or watching over and over.
Hereditary & Midsommar were 2 of the best horror movies in the last 10 years for me, if not longer. I didn't dislike Beau Is Afraid, but it wasn't for me. I'd never want to stop an artist from pursuing what they want to create, but I really wanted more horror from Aster, & that wasn't it. Still can't wait to see what he does next though. Edit: I am curious though, of the people in the comments who didn't like it, what horror movies from roughly the same time frame they did enjoy (not scared by, but enjoyed. no one over the age of 12 should be scared by a movie anymore).
I agree. I loved both of those. Also It Follows.
@indiatastic midsommar was great. Seeing hereditary and it follows in theatres were alright. I wasn't very impressed, they had their moments though.
I think it's the fans who are such snobs and anything that isn't art house horror are wrong.
@tzgaming207 yeah curious to see those answers. Comments are pretty mixed. I think it was good but not a masterpiece.
@getsomeboy321 no snob here, that's for sure 😁 the problem for me tho is now in my 50s, having been a horror fan & taking it all in for over 40 of them, finding one that has both an interesting concept (totally subjective, of course), _AND_ is pulled off _really_ well-- & some concepts just need a certain level of panache to make it really work the way it's intended-- those rarely come in the same package... So much of what comes out now is just "bleh". Most times, even if I enjoy it, I'll have 0 urge to ever watch it again or recommend it to others. It's just a consumable. When Hereditary came out, you knew you had something special (or at least atypical) going on, tho. Then we got Midsommar, & Aster just hits it out of the park. So few movies hit that sweet spot for me now. Mandy was another I really loved like that. But I do likes me some cheese (Terrifier comes to mind) F*cking despise Skinamarink, tho✌😁
@tzgaming207 interesting you enjoyed terrifier. I enjoyed it, although it's like how the early saw movies hit for me. Just over the top gore. I might have to revisit the film and give it a second chance.
Hereditary is definitely a messed up movie, but I think it's a tad overrated. I've seen it twice and liked it more the second time; but I still don't love it. Midsommar, on the other hand, is excellent on every level.
Hail Paimon!
😎🙏💯
Haven’t been affected by a film as much as Hereditary since I saw it in the theatre. The high bar for horror in the past 20 years.
The movies so slow BUT when it ramped up IT RAMPED UP
I hated Beau is Afraid… it was overly self indulgent I feel… I hope Ari has gotten it out of his system now and will get back to deep, involving stories again
Aster is this era's Aronofsky. For better and worse.
He's Charlie Kauffman for horror audiences.
After all the hype about this movie i found it slow and boring and the last act was just silly.
this movie was so unintentionally hilarious.... no one could act in it except for Gabriel.
Hey what did that click girl get up to after this
im no sadist but i legit laughed my fucking asshole off. not even to be edgy. her character annoyed the fuck out me so much. im not lying that cracked me the fuck up.. screw using acronyms .. thers no justice in that... but HEY . the scenes DIRECTLY after are gut wretching. because it does hit and you cant help but feel absolutely feel the brother feel.. many of us have siblings and the thought of negligentl taking there life. i couldnt be able to live with myself
I did not like this movie a few scenes were okay, but I ended up falling asleep lawl
This movie didn't even have an ending lolz 😂 lame fest
Its was average, not a masterpiece.
You guys throw the word "Masterpiece" around way too loosely ...
lol
Midsommar was better
This is Movie Trash most overrated unscary Horror movie of all time. I laughed at most of it ridiculous over the top performances and the Ending was crap and Sucked Balls.
lmao masterpiece is a little generous, ari aster's a weird dude who makes weird movies, not much more to say about it.
hereditary is a bad movie
"masterpiece" 🤣
I absolutely hated this one
Thank you. I was hoping there would be at least one sensible person out there.
yeah most people hate this movie and find it boring..
Only cinephiles keep hyping this overrated movie
@@prj7894Stealing some camera styles and themes from Kubrick and Polanski does not a great movie make.
Yep was boring and the last act was more comedy.
Hereditary absolutely blows.
Agree. Was boring and just about put me to sleep. And the last act was more comedy.
Thank you!!2
The only reason anyone talks about this movie is Charlie's death scene. The rest is over-dramatic gobbledygook.
I hated this movie i walked out in the middle of it. For me i just did not dind it interesting
It was disgusting and exploitative.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 and not good in any way
This movie was boring
This movie was so grotesquely overrated AF! It wasn't scary at all, was so predictable (1/3 thru I already knew this was gonna be like a rosemary's baby conspiracy) hated all the characters & Collette just mainly overreacts to all that happens around! I swear the people praising it seriously appear as though they're not that familiar with horror films in general!
I remember my first horror movie! I think this one is overrated AF and just another Exorcist clone.
With U.S. of Tara, I believe Colette can do ANYthing. ❤
But no mention of the inspiration for Charlie's death? Drunk dude wakes up with his friends body still in the passenger seat in the garage? Kinda surprised JB. 🫤
