  • Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers, the sixth film in the Halloween franchise, isn’t just one of the most divisive entries in the series; it also had a more troubled production than any of the others. There was studio interference, a controversial recasting, and extensive re-shoots, which resulted in two substantially different cuts of the film - one of which wasn’t officially available for decades. It’s a messy story, and we’re diving right into it with this episode of WTF HAPPENED TO THIS HORROR MOVIE?

    SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
    This episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

    Poor Danielle Harris. Being in Halloween 6 probably wouldn't have changed her career much but the effort she put in to get cast to a role she already played twice just to be turned away as an afterthought is disheartening. She deserved much better.

      I really hope she's in Halloween Ends and everyone buries the hatchet (no pun intended) regarding anything disparaging she might've said in the past. Maybe cast her as the daughter of the now-dead father, Ray, from a previous marriage whose mother died from . Upon hearing of her father's murder, she's also out to destroy Michael along with Allyson, particularly since they're now fatherless for the same reason. At that point, you've reestablished your trio of heroines (Laurie, Allyson, and Danielle's character [Jamie?]) since everyone else of any importance is dead (except maybe Officer Hawkins).
      I'm sure the script for Ends is written in stone at this point, but it's a nice thing for which to wish.

    Halloween 6 did one thing better than most other Halloween films. It showed a bigger more angry Michael Myers. Dr Loomis talked about his rage in this film and you could see that insane anger in Michael on screen especially in the theatrical chase scenes.

    It's so crazy how the franchise went so far off from the original simplistic Carpenter/Hill concept. Akkad really sent the franchise further and further downhill with each entry. It's such a shame how disjointed the Halloween franchise is as a whole with all of the different timelines. I guess it's more of a testamate to how good Carpenter really is as a filmmaker. Just look at all the different writers and directors over the years that have tried to put their own spin or ideas into the Halloween movies and none of them are in any way close to what JC was able to pull off with the smallest budget and crew of all the productions.

    • @Se7enDsinSGaming
      @Se7enDsinSGaming Před 2 lety +35

      The thing that made the original what it is, is that nobody needed to know anything. Laurie wasn't even his sister in the beginning. My opinion is once you peel back what makes a monster it makes it less scary, especially if the reasoning isn't good enough like for me the cult thing didn't land well.

  • @fredleggett923
    @fredleggett923 Před 2 lety +38

    This series is a prime example of "reach not exceeding grasp" or "the whole being lesser than the sum of its parts". I actually kinda liked the whole cult of Thorn angle, as it explained (to a limited degree) why Michael had such supernatural strength and stamina. I also liked (again, to a limited degree) that Michael was related to Laurie, as it partially revealed why he was so intent on killing her, especially given the events of H2 at Haddonfield Memorial. It's so weird that Halloween Kills goes out of its way to proclaim that Michael wasn't specifically after Laurie all along and she was just coincidental collateral damage for...what?
    There's a lot of good stuff in H4 thru 6 that could've been timeless to the series if a little more care had been taken to flesh-out the more wild and heady ideas.

    Unlike 5, H20, and Resurrection, this movie actually feels like Halloween with its tone, direction, and atmosphere.
    Especially in the Producer’s cut. It truly feels the most like Halloween since the original 3 films.
    That said, amongst its many problems with writing, pacing, editing, and performances, the biggest issue with the film for me is that it lacks the energy and charisma that’s present in 4, 5, H20, and even Resurrection.
    Love them or hate them, you remember Tina, Rachael, Ronnie, Bud, Sheriff Meeker, and even Freddy Harris.
    Every character in this film comes off so somber and wooden.
    The only character who feels in tune with the rest of the series, is Mr. Strode who has charisma and energy.
    Everyone and everything else is so bland and overly serious.
    It doesn’t help that the subject matter involves a teenager being impregnated, implied incest, and creepy rituals involving babies, all making it hard to have that entertainment value of the other films.
    Curse of Michael Myers is a terrible movie in my opinion, but it’s better than 5 and Resurrection, and while H20 is actually a competent film, Curse feels more authentic to the series than that film.
    Myers is mildly intimidating. the atmosphere, cinematography, some fun kills, a great performance by Donald Pleasance, and it certainly captures the feel of the series more than the other sequels.

    This was the last of the original 8 films I saw and it was only about 5 years ago when I did. I knew little of the backstory at the time and just saw it as a convoluted mess trying to explain too much. I appreciated that it FELT like a Halloween film though, like more so than 3 (obviously) 4 and 5, and when I learnt the backstory on a Cinemassacre review a few years ago, I then appreciated more what the director was trying to do. He TRIED! He TRIED as hard as he could to tie so many loose ends from the previous films together to sorta give it some sense and continuity. Even having a returning Michael Myers actor for once. Having Loomis there was gold, Tommy Doyle, like bridging the gaps again where the others often trailed off into different tangents. It leaves a sour taste what they did with Danielle Harris hearing what she put in to reprise her role :(
    I'm in the camp of 'less is more' though. And the cult story is just silly, its better when we don't know things, when there's questions, when there's mystery. It's definitely not the worst in the franchise. It's better than 5, Resurrection + Rob Zombies H2 in my opinion. The new trilogy of films, ive only seen the first 2, its too soon to say, I feel 6 is more of an authentic Halloween sequel than those despite them being better films on the surface.
    Thanks for the review pal, love when these 'forgotten' films get some attention and deep analysis.

When that lil girl is like “it’s raining red” as she danced around as blood drips down was fantastic. When he massacred Jamie Lloyd and took that nurse and stuck her head on the spike these are iconic killings!!! This movie gets a bad wrap in my opinion. So many classic scenes in horror history. my childhood memories of this film is odd I watched Halloween 5 as soon as it hit VHS that cliff hanger ending was brutal it seem like Halloween 666 took forever to finally get made (5-6yrs) that gap of time i’m sure effected the overall box office…. I remember seeing it the opening weekend with my older brother (The film itself holds a special place in my heart) The worst thing imo about Halloween 6 was seeing In Memory of Donald Pleasence at the end of the film! During this time there was no internet or smart phones at your fingertips i remember the promotion for the film was huge lots of print add all over magazines, comic books, Spencer’s Gifts had the original Theatrical poster hung up in the front of the window with the Halloween 666 title on it…. The making of the film itself deserves a stand alone documentary (i know there was one on the Halloween BR box set) but, the entire story is so insane it deserves more of a deep dive (there are actually 4 different cuts of the film. it’s a shame a film as really good as Halloween 4 got no proper follow up sequel that added value to the Return of Michael Myers to make matters worse that time line has been nuked several times now! The fucking annoying tone of rock music overlays, mashup cuts like a MTV music video, different build of Michael in the reshoots, EXTREMELY stupid and ambiguous ending minutes are just the cherry on top. Green chemical liquid oozing out of Michael's mask with Rudd's beatdown, then Loomis' screaming overlaid with the mask and an empty syringe on the floor....like 'the hell is going on? I am even more lost watching this compared to the end of Halloween 5'.

      In a vague sense, Crockett's appearance and style do not change much; He is always known to have blonde hair and a sun tan, and is usually seen sporting a 5 o'clock shadow and wearing a loose fitting suit over a T-shirt, paired with deck shoes or loafers without socks. However, over the seasons various aspects of Crockett's appearance change; in the first season Crockett's hairstyle is short and parted over on the side; in the second season it becomes slightly longer in the front and becomes a combed back bouffant-like style; in the third season Crockett's hairstyle becomes short and spikey, and gradually grows out in the back, making it mullet-like; in the fourth season Crockett's hairstyle reverts to being bouffant-like in the front and remains mullet-like, and grows out as the season progresses; for the fifth season Crockett is first portrayed with a stylish ponytail until he regains his memory, after which his hairstyle becomes long and parted over on one side and continues to grow to its longest length. In the first two seasons Crockett's suits and shirts are tailored in pastel colors, while they are instead dark neons for the third season; In the fourth season Crockett's clothing style becomes a mixture of his first two looks; In the fifth season Crockett wears darker shades different from the other seasons and also begins being seen half the time with stonewashed blue jeans and/or a jean jacket paired with sneakers or cowboy boots. Don Johnson originally wanted Crockett to dress more like an urban cowboy, with leather boots, jeans and buttoned shirts, It was only when he arrived in Miami and felt the constant heat and humidity that he changed his mind and followed Michael Mann's ideas of a pastel linen suit look for Crockett. In the very early portion of the first season, Crockett wears brown Carrera 5512 Large sunglasses and Alpina TR 4 glasses; for most of the first season and all of the second season, Crockett wears tortoise shell Ray-Ban Wayfarers. In the third season, Crockett wears black Persol Ratti 69218 glasses. For the fourth and fifth seasons, Crockett wears black Ray Ban Wayfarers, however he wore blue mirrored Revo sunglasses while masquerading as Sonny Burnett. In season 1-2, Crockett was a chain smoker, something that was initially considered by some fans to be one of his trademarks. Some episodes (such as "Brother's Keeper" and "Calderone's Return (Part II)") showed that he preferred unfiltered Lucky Strikes. Throughout season 3, Crockett was no longer seen smoking, and by the season 4 episode "Death and the Lady", he reveals that he has quit altogether. This change was a result of real-life pressure from censors in 1986 during the height of Miami Vice's popularity, as they expressed concern that young men who tried to emulate Crockett would take up smoking. As an interesting bit of trivia, Sonny Crockett's fashion was allegedly inspired by John Taylor of Duran Duran, who, in the video for "Hungry Like the Wolf" is seen wearing a white sportcoat and white slacks with no shirt and slip-on shoes. As the show was in development at the time of the video, this idea was noted. Conversely, Don Johnson maintains that his not wearing buttoned shirts or socks with his suits, as well as the often rolled up sleeves, were simply due to the intense heat he encountered in Miami during filming of the episodes, which caused him to remove items of clothing to be comfortable.

I just wish the whole franchise wasn't as disjointed as it is with all the different timelines and whatnot. It's good to see Halloween doing well in recent years and now. I always felt Myers was a better slasher series than Voorhees, Krueger or Chucky. Maybe, from this point forward, Hollywood will start getting these remakes or reboots right and give us some good horror films.

    I'm looking forward to watching these two movies, but from what I hear I won't like either. I guess you've got to watch both, pick the bits from both that work best and then invent some cool bits with Donald Pleasence to make a good movie.

    Should've left the scenes with Dr. Loomis & some that actually make sense.

    I'm a huge fan of the pt 1-2-4-5-6 timeline but even I can't ever really get into pt 6..

    Regardless of the confusion, I still really like this one. Michael Myers is so damn intimidating and brutal, the actor played him very well. Unfortunate the plot got mixed up and had to ruin it but he was still a savage.
