Greek Roman Egyptian Magic - Greek Magical Papyri - Books of Magic

- We explore the earliest collection of magical texts in the ancient world - The Greek Magical Papyri (PGM) and the Egyptian Demotic spells. The PGM is the greatest collection of ancient magic. Written on papyrus these collections of spells, incantations, evocations, represent the rich cross-pollination between various cultures, religious systems, and forms of magic and divination. From Egyptian, Roman, Jewish, Greek cultures and religions emerges an amazing religious and magical syncretism. This video introduces the PGM and discusses a collection of spells including: an invisibility lotion, the invocation of Helios, a rare example of lesbian love magic, a curse for your boss, magical athletic ability, protection from demons, an anger management spell and more. This video is part of a series on books of magic in history - subscribe for future videos!

Hi ther have you ever tried out a spell and did it work
@@khushwanth0076 I would never try it, not even for curiosity. It is no coincidence that for the success of the rite it is necessary to follow a very complicated - almost "bureaucratic" - procedure that leaves no doubts on the practitioner's will to succeed, such that he cannot then say: "I didn't want to do it, it was just a game!".
Rule 11 The Basis of Annonimity
Sworn to Secrecy
Yes knowing Magic does not make Latin any easier.
I found a Book, a real one. I had to learn things and still not good at Latin.
Fortunately I copied a lot of the Book itself before it was destroyed by rain. 3 words on the 2nd page
Arcanum Esoterica Scientist
A Warning and a Set of Rules.
Beautiful drawings hand written notes.
One the page of the ______ see the force is that which makes difficult to describe an Action when I first found that book.
Spell on, How to Find Things.
More like how to make a Metal Detector, with what type of specific Magnet that a person has to go out and find, locate.
Latin description or any description of some things may remain undecipherable.
The book gave a description of a stick of wood made into the Rod of St. Dunstan by also attempts to describe is uses.
@Esoterica Can you do an episode on the the use of the magic wand in esoteric practices? Would make a great Halloween video...
Just a friendly suggestion. This type of scholarship and guidance is unusual. There are a lot more positive comment then there are monthly subscribers. I just became a monthly subscriber and would suggest to anyone who has waded in the pond of on line resources for real magick history and practical advice that we really don't want to lose this beautiful voice. Lets try and make it possible for our professor to do this full time. He is such a needed addition to the field.
I appreciate the support and kind words so much. This channel is just getting started and I am humbled by how much support we are getting. I hope it increases and I can more and more to make the content here the highest quality possible and accessible to anyone who want to engage with it. Thanks so much!
He is such a breathe of fresh air in the academics. We don't have this in South Florida colleges and universities, not even in the area. I have to go to New Orleans or up northern states like Rhode Island or Massachusetts to meet people like this.
I hope he publishes a book or two
@@LadyCoyKoi Are there lots of people in Massachusetts like this? I live here and have never met anyone that deep into it. Its mostly people who think they know about astrology and are into crystals.
@@damnhard1863 I second this! He's awesome
I’ve always wondered why my brother, who sells hieratic papyri in the market, does such good business, while I - a seller, exclusively, of red lamps - does not! Now I understand.
Post Script:
Papipety Metybanes is hence forth a reoccurring character in every rpg, short story, or novel I write.
An unfortunate magic practitioner that, being rather cheap, used regular papari instead of hieratic, and the impurities blasted him across every known and unknown universe.
@@andrewrobinson4019 I very much enjoyed learning this, and would be interested in reading your work if possible. Either way, keep it up bro

I’m pretty sure Egyptian magic consisted of summoning monsters from the shadow realm via duel disks, with which Egyptian magicians dueled each other and also used for warfare. The greatest Egyptian magician was the pharaoh Atem, whose soul was later sealed in the millennium puzzle and currently resides in the body of a Japanese boy named Yugi Motou.
offs lol
Nice
The egyptian Tulli papyrus talks about something seeming like the result of one of those magic spells occurred in 1500 b.c., almost the same time the Bible refers as the "egyptians plagues".

Really now Yu - gi - oh ismore real-relative. Fascinating still. And no offense i just had to say it to you rather keep such chuckles tucked in.
"When one burns books, one will inevitably burn people". I am surprised to find I agree with that. Nice proverb.
Egyptians: we have a spell for keeping the bugs out
Moses: hold my beer....
Yes! That was the significance of each of the plagues. They were "clowning" the various Egyptian deities by showing their impotence against Yahweh/Jehovah.

Just imagine the artifacts and texts sold off to rich private collections that we'll never know about. Its a much larger amount then we could imagine.

Wow I had no idea there were so many surviving examples of defixiones, nor had I EVER seen a "curse bowl". What an absolutely fascinating window into the lives and beliefs of ancient people.
I absolutely love the level of research in your videos. Always an interesting watch.
Thanks so saying so!
That noise is on when he is explaining 😳 💀 the mummy casting spell to throw at your boss, between the 27 minutes into his video listen to it, it almost sounds like a mummy!!!!! Creepy!!!!!
It's sad how often small-minded people want to wall off cultures, but it's encouraging to see how often authors like these pull sources together.
A walled off culture is a good thing. Walls crack and fences need mending. Things are as they should be.

I was looking for this comment....Fucking magnets, how do they work???
Okay, as a queer woman myself, hearing about that love spell between two women was REALLY cool. I mean, obviously we have always existed, but so many people like to pretend we just popped into existence some time in the 80s or 90s. Having such clear evidence of a woman expressing romantic or sexual desire for another woman in the ancient world is a great reminder of how wrong they are. Such things seem scarce sometimes, simply because of the emphasis historical writing tends to put on men and THEIR romantic and sexual proclivities.
The spell says to 'attract' and bind Sarapias to this Herais. Attract and bind the soul and heart of Sarapias to this Herais. It sounds like Sarapias was not interested or had her eye on a boy. Human sexuality. Maybe Herais became heterosexual later on in life. Good old days, when one didn't have to share a bathroom, didn't have to use pronouns or lose a job, get expelled from school.
Way to force what you heard presented here through your modern gay lens, is that all you took away from this? You know most people have more interesting aspects to themselves than who they like kissing, why must you make this “identity” you claim your entire personality and focus? As you said, it’s quite obvious they’ve always existed so why make something so obvious your focal point? There’s so many more interesting things to take away from this video, uninteresting people tend to be that way though sadly. Please stop forcing your modern lens on a past you clearly don’t understand very well and get a real personality instead of being “queer”(which means abnormal, odd, strange, or eccentric btw which doesn’t make a lick of sense as it’s normal to be gay, you’re rather boring and somewhat ill defined)
@@celiajarvis3168 that’s not true at all

I do hope you'll make a video that goes in-depth on Coptic Christian magical papyri. In a book by Marvin W. Meyer titled Ancient Christian Magic: Coptic Texts of Ritual Power details spells and rituals such as exorcisms, protection from demons, love spells, magical healing, fire baptisms, and much more, dating from the 1st to 12th century CE. Fascinating stuff.
Will be doing one and the text you mention is key!
I literally just found that book and ordered it!! How serendipitous that you should mention it here!! 💜💜💜
Best channel I've found in a while! Thanks you so much
Thanks for watching looks for new content most Fridays!
People say Crowley mixed the different traditions up in magic but it seems it was always the case my man Justin , also thanks for th references, cool books. your tremendous sir
This is absolutely fascinating! Let the deep dive of your channel begin!
i like that you pointed out that the bug repelling spell could may well be science and technology by today's standards. subbing now~ also, one of the reasons why most of us today find these ancient spells to carry out is because access to the materials needed is very difficult...most of them would require harming animals or procuring items that are not abundant or have been replaced by other (more modern) versions, such as paper~
Yep, the line between science, magic, religion, technology, etc., is often pretty blurry then and now and I can't imagine (and don't want to know) how one might procure some of the stuff from these texts.
A lot of history is always told in granduer, epic battles, lives of rulers, their decisions, the exploits of the rich and privileged, and while that is all a very important part of history, I am thankfully I found this channel. I am not in any way a believer in any kind of superstition, supernatural magic. That being said, these papyri give us no less than a glimpse into the lives of regular people, their struggles, their wishes. If you stop and think about it, you and me are just living our lives, will people 2000 years from now know how we lived our lives? That we woke up at 7 am, had coffee, browsed the news on our smartphone, caught bus to work, worked for 8 hours, returned home and spent our free time on netflix or video games? Will they know someone else who had a completely different routine?
Either way, this is not something I ever expected to stumble into and enjoy watching, but your presentation really helps Dr. Sledge.
And yes I know you made this 2 years ago and i am so happy you are going strong to this day.
You're unironicly the coolest person i can think of tbh
Words can lift you up or cut you down, Words are Swords, We draw words like we draw swords. All words are dualistic they put us in a dual Sword fight Words fight/fighting words. Hence the paper cut. We are pend/pen, in to system by words/spells, animals are pend in by the fencing another word for dueling/sword fight. The pen is mightier than the sword.
"Including prayer..."

Magicians everywhere thank you for these videos! 😁
Sir, this is some of the most interesting scholarly work I’ve ever consumed. This channel is a gem!
Makes me wonder if Old McDonald Had A Farm was a prosperity spell.
Just recently became a patron of Dr. Sledge and have to say some of the best money I have spent this year. I encourage everyone to support Dr. Sledge if possible because despite the vastness of youtube/the internet this knowledge is STILL quite hidden and not talked about in detail. Thank you so much for what you do Dr. Sledge and you have my full support in building this wonderful incredible channel.
I bet this man could be the most powerful magician on earth today with all of his knowledge lol
There is a difference between knowledge and practice.
He properly is and isn't telling. He just wants to spread knowledge which was once banned or illegal to do so.
I bet he already is 🧙♂️⚡
I for one am under his spell.
Fr tho he could be the greatest wizard ever, hes even got the beard
This is such an excellent introductory lecture on ancient magic! Thank you!
The goat bile would be corrosive to fat based insect shells, and the smell would probably repel them also. Pretty interesting.
Rapidly growing into being one of my favourite channels. Thank you so much for all your hard work.
I love your channel!! ❤️🙏. You are amazing in your depth of lore and wisdom. Thanks
Some of these things just seem like a total "mash up" of so many different things - all I can find myself imagining is that dude in "The Mummy" who was about to be killed with the mummy and he showed us he was wearing charms from about 50 different systems of faith, and he just started running through them one after another. "Just throw everything in there - maybe something will work..."
You're not wrong !
I am so glad to have discovered this channel
I love looking up what the ancients occasionally believed would cause change in their world. It proves that ancient people did at least sometimes believe this stuff would actually work. It makes one wonder if ancient rulers banned these works because they were legitimately afraid of them or because they were afraid their citizenry would be hurt by the scammers who wrote them.
Your analysis is fascinating. Thank you so much for making this video
Well done. Very interesting talk, and excellent visual representations as well. Thank you.

So fascinating!! Great channel! Wondering- if you are planning to do an episode on the Chaldean Oracles?
the lamella is particularly intriguing to me. if the wearer stopped to imagine the anger flowing into the metal, it would force them to stop long enough to calm down. actually, that might be a sound way to force yourself to calm down. we do that all the time now. we stop, take a deep breath, and continue calmer than before.
I'm totally absorbed into this amazing and priceless information. I have no idea how it came up in my feed but recently I've been experiencing weird things that are unexplainable to me. I have a deep feeling of belonging not sure how to explain it. But I feel linked
A real genius. Well done sir
The symbols with the loops at the terminals have a superficial resemblance to a needlecraft called "tatting". It's like crochet, but you also tug out extra tiny loops by pulling at the the smaller twisted strands of fiber that make up whatever thread you're using. My grandmother told me it was a lost art, or a dying art or something like that.
Great research.
Thanks!
Of course - stay tuned for new content most Fridays!
Very learned and entertaining
Your videos are amazing thank you 🤟
Glad you like them!
Excellent work as always, Dr. Sledge! A little note that may interest you: erotic binding magic between women can be found in several examples not from the PGM, but of that same general provenance and cultural milieu, in the excellent book by Bernadette J. Brooten called Love Between Women: Early Christian Responses to Female Homoeroticism, which is a superb study in general, but is also of particular interest for those who study ancient magic for this specific purpose! Even if the rest of the material doesn't interest you, the chapter on erotic magic and the examples it gives is worth the admission price, so to speak, in my view! :)
This was super cool!
Love this !💜
