Super Mario Bros. 3 - Infinite 1-up Techniques

- Super Mario Bros. 3 is not known for its exceptional difficulty, but any player will recognize the value in acquiring as many extra lives as possible. Super Mario Bros. 3 provides the player with many opportunities to acquire "infinite" 1-ups. Typically, the player can acquire many 1-ups quickly with these techniques but either has to stop at some point to finish the level or keep collecting the 1-ups until time runs out.
This video shows six different locations to perform an "infinite" 1-up trick. The locations and methods are as follows:
1) 1-2: Stomping on endless Goombas as they come out of a pipe, using a Raccoon tail to stay in the air long enough for more to come out of the pipe.
2) World 2 Fortress: A technique similar to #1, stomping on three Dry Bones (who come back to life after a few seconds) endlessly.
3) 3-4: Luring Lakitu back to an earlier part of the level, fetching a turtle shell, and kicking it between two indestructible blocks. Lakitu will drop Spiny eggs that will miss the player (usually) and the turtle shell will defeat them endlessly.
4) 3-9: Taking a turtle shell from the start of the level, kicking it between two Bullet Bill cannons, and getting to a safe place. The shell will defeat Bullet Bills endlessly.
5) 4-1: Similar to #2, stomping giant red Koopas endlessly.
6) World 7, first fortress: The famous P-Switch room allows the player to turn hundreds of blocks into coins, only to leave the room and come back, resetting all the blocks and allowing the player to do the whole thing over again.
I let the video for each portion run a little longer than would be necessary to get the basic technique across, but I wanted to make it clear that these techniques can generate lots of 1-ups for the player in a short time. - Zábava
2:34 I never knew that one. Over 30 years later you can still learn something new about a game.
one of the best descriptions I've read on youtube, hands down. & I'm a old school gamer. I usually die 30 times & figure out a new way instead of reading descriptions. Freakin A man, keep those vids commin.
Thanks friend! You saved me from running out of lives! :D
+abdielink You are welcome!
I had the World 1, World 2 and World 7 infinite lives tricked figured out. The other ones I didn't figure those out until I saw this video.
Cool. They're essentially taken from the Nintendo Power SMB 3 Strategy Guide.
Thank you for the video!
You are welcome!
2020 anyone?
Yes and im already beat this game in 2020 with 1-up tricks, secret 1up mushrooms, secret power ups , blue toad houses, no spades and more. I play this in GBA on android with mario and luigi. My age is 11+ years. And my total time was 1hr 30 mins 50 secs! :) im youngest player of this game who completed this game under 2 hrs! :) . What are you think now please reply me.
Me
@@otfMessi means what are you think to see my reply please tell me. :)
Thanks! This is really helpful! 😀
Well, I wasn't claiming that this was an exhaustive list of all of the places where you can accumulate 1-Ups, but you're right, it's possible to do it there. Of course, the Bullet Bills are rather unreliable since you can't really predict when they're going to fire, which means that it's nowhere near as easy to get 1-Ups there as it is in other places.
01:42 and 04:39 are the ones I always remembered. Thanks for the tips on the others.
No, I read them all in one source or another. I think my biggest source was the Nintendo Power strategy guide for SMB 3. Actually, the last one (with the P-switch and all the coins) I did find myself, but since it's mandatory to find if you didn't enter the stage able to fly, I'm sure I wasn't the only person ever to stumble onto it. :)
I just dusted off my Snes and decided i am going to play through mario 3 through the weekend, this video will help nicely hehe thanks dude
Oh, thanks bro. Now I can beat the game!
Thanks. I played this one a lot as a kid.
Oh im too but im kid because my age is 11 years xD and I'm already know this 1-up tricks and 4-5 you fotgot that! Im go in world 2 when i have 45 of mario and luigi means i go in world 2 when i have 90 lives in total! And i never die in this game so if i have 1 life but i can defeat bowser easily! :)
excellent man!!
Thanks for these. My Wii decided to crap out during my fight with Bowser, now I can get back to him with...minimal hassle.
@Deauxboi123 Hey, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you found this one helpful.
1:14 Everyone in this part seems to get infinite lives.
very nice! i didnt knew about the ones in world 3 and 4
Thanks this is really helpful :')
Awesome!
Awesome tricks
@YoshiTechnoManMaster Well, the method in 1-2 is the earliest in the game. The turtle shell probably happens a little faster than the stomping method and the coin collection. It's also the most leisurely once you get it set up.
great video btw.
This game is actually really schizophrenic with its difficulty.
It hears voices? I think you mean bipolar.
@@karlmuster263 inconsistent
Ok Johnny
Thanks!
I like the second one you did with the turtle shell and the guy riding the cloud dropping spikey eggs. Also the block room in world 7 that turns into coins.
E no forte do mundo 7 se tiver a P-Wing sobrando, ninguém nos segura !! Mas o tempo é curto.
LOL the one with the cloud was awesome!! :D
The coin castle is the slowest but also the most satisfying.
Omg thanks so much this vid helped sooo mich
Yes, nice responses.
It works!! Thamks!
Great!
How do you pick up Koopa shells?
You hold the run button then touch a koop shell ( YOU MUST KEEP HOLDING RUN BUTTON )
World 3 Level 9 is the best trick! Thanks!
Thanks, glad you liked it!
@PianoManiac99 With the Raccoon Tail, you can slow your descent by hammering on the A button.
Pretty smart! Didn't know bout the Bullet Bill one!
Woooh tnx for the tips i can now continue this game until the princes scastle
comments are "old but gold" 😍💖
12 years ago... 11 yrs ago.. 13 yrs ago😎
#retro #truly90s♥️
How do you keep jumping that high? I always get one big jump and regular ones when trying 1-2
his power bar is full... with that you can fly
I've never known any of this. I'm in shock. Just got our NES & SNES hooked up. Been starting my kid off on the games I started off on.
That winged goomba is really the lifeline of the trick I didnt observe that before
You are the super player!
Eye Glitch “YOU ARE SUPER PLAYER!” - Super Mario World (Super Famicom version) 😆
yeah you rock!!! thanks
nice, i didnt no the 1-2, 3-4, and the 4-1 ones. thx :D now i can get like 99 lives in the 2nd stage i have played in the entire game!
the dry bones one is GENIUS!
Thanks!
The only one I knew was world 2. I’m good at that one. Just recently got myself a Nintendo classic.
AWESOME. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There might have been one or two other places you could do it, but 3-1 was by far the most famous place to do it.
Thank you so much i needed my dad need this video for my daddy thank you so much for posting this video
Crazy
I'm about to try this myself of this is true thank you
Thank you
The worst parts about these games are the game overs. This will help me out plenty
Glad it's helpful!
That's Awesome...always knew the trick with dead bones but my new favorite is world 3 level 4 just sit back and watch the magic....genius

Yes, hammering on the A button can be a real pain, but some of the later techniques don't require such hard work.
Respect!
Likewise!
You can save at any point in the game with the NES mini, I have 34 lives tons of level ups and matching the cards is always guaranteed 😂
getting 1ups is the best thing bout the mario games- Mario World even lets u know how good ur doing with the number of lives flashing up on screen.;)
0:49 I did that trick
I just tried that one and I can see how you *would* do it, but I couldn't get all the turtles under control. I guess it just takes more practice. It's also more difficult since once you've got the turtles under control, you've got to keep them spaced out enough so that you don't kick a shell by mistake, since that'll ruin the whole setup. Still, nice tip.
3:37: As Chris Pratt would say; "I spent hours of my life stomping... KOOPAS".
It seems like where ever Lakito goes, infinite 1-ups follow.
the world 3 ones were f**king genius
Are there any more 1 up secrets for those worlds and Worlds 5 6 and 8?
Well, yeah, it's a lot easier in SMB 3 since you can hammer the "A" button with a Raccoon Tail. Of course, this kinda wears out your thumb, eventually....
omggggg so many memories :P
3-4 was the first place I got to learn of infinite lives. My brother showed me this years ago when I was still 12...
Thanks now I know how to get max lives before I go to world to
I never knew about some of these!
+MarshmallowMadnesss And now you do! I hope you enjoyed the video!
I knew of the 1st one (World 1-2) and the Third one (World 3-4). I had suspected the 2nd one (World 2-Fort), but didn't think too much of it. Now I can go back and try it myself. The third one was a trial and error that my brother and I had done due to curiosity. I shall try out World 3-9.
World 4-1 is a bit tricky, so it may take me a whole to figure out the best way to get it right.
World 7-Fort-1 is called the "Castle/Fort of Greed". Usually because of the amount of Coins, people tend to simply collect coins until they die due to time ups. It is usually a wasteful practice, because you have to spend the time collecting coins to get 1ups, rather than getting the 1ups after some time like hits and they continue.
+Tickenest Yeah, the second world's was new it me. Forgot about 4- 1 too because my patience sucks with it, lol. I had heard there were three, and I know the goombas in 1-2, but I never even considered the first castle in world 2 for the third one I never learned!
+Julio Brian Good point about world 7s. Never heard it called "Castle of Greed" either, haha. It was the first infinite lives I figured out in... probably 1990 too. Fast forward years later, and the highlight of that castle is really the secret door left of the P button that takes you to a Tanooki suit. :)
That makes two of us.
I was aware of all of these except 4-1 but I usually only use the technique from 1-2.
I memorized the timing for star cards so well that none of the techniques for lives are really necessary for me anyways.
How do i jump high like that after stomping on the goomba, any advice is appreciated!
Hold jump button.
how do you jump so high when you land on them?
idk if this helps 8 years later but press up and the jump button at the same time when you land on them😅
The only 1-up trick I knew about was the one from world 3-4.
And now you know lots of tricks!
That one is actually the trickiest of the tricks, and most rewarding when pulled off correctly!
And World 1-2 for me
World seven is easiest trick I say
Don't forget world 4-5, found out how to get more 1-ups by endlessly jumping on bullet bills with the leaf at the end where the pipe is at
25th Anniversary Mario is not out for the Wii... never thought I'd play the Wii more than my PS3 and Xbox!!
I miss the good old days of nes. good times.... :-)
Man, this is awesome. Thanks so much for posting this, I love this game and I can't wait to get some extra lives for those giant fish levels. You know the one's I'm talking about, where the fish jumps out and eat's you? AUGH THAT FREAKING FISH.
@Tickenest how much money can an overgrown spiky turtle (aka Bowser) have?
sitting down and drinking coffee
some references were some stuff in super mario world (like the p switch room)
You forgot World 4-5. In the section with the glowing Bullet Bills that turn around, you can get a bunch of extra lives by jumping on them if you have a leaf or the Tanooki suit.
The only advice I can give is to hold down the A button to get Mario to bounce high after he stomps an enemy.
@iintoxikation You have to stomp them continuously without touching the ground in between.
@CescoPisicoli Thank you!
watching this video makes me want to grab my NES from the basement and play this game
Mario 3 is so easy, you really don't need too many lives.
This is so cool!
But i used quick save on NES emulator.
Another ways to get 1 up: keep jumping on the cannonball and bullet bill
Most convenient technique is you force the Lakitu on the spot with two brick barriers, or whatever it is called, and bringing a shell on to it. see it in 1:42
I've also done it by pouncing turtles in 1-1 (with the three flying turtles and one walking turtle)
This would have helped alot of people way back :) haha
wow stomping gomba 1 up trick, its new for me
How'd u discover those?, from playing alot? I didn't know if u used game genie or some other cheat..
001GenLee what's a game genie
Chaotic ShadowShot The Game Genie was a device that acted as an intermediary between the cartridge and the NES. It could change the way in which the game played, mainly for the purpose of allowing cheats and actions that would have been impossible normally. Most NES emulators these days support using Game Genie codes.
I guess I never answered your original question. Most of these were outlined in Nintendo Power at some point.
001GenLee !
vildana9
FYI: These tricks can also be done in the Super Mario All-Stars version.
Cooooool!
thanx! now i dont suck at it
Yep, that also works, but it only gets you a single 1-Up.
How do you pick up koopa shells, I've been trying bit I can never get it, pls help!
Hold down the B button (same button you use to run) and run into the koopa shell (after you stomped the koopa, obviously!)
poor koopas even in death they will give mario a 1up
How do u get him to bounce so high when he jumps off stuff?
only 3 come out of the pipe at a time and I can't stay up that long. How do u get it to jump so high??
You have to hold down the A button as you land. Continue to do so and you'll manage the high jump.
How do you stay in the air for a long time on world 1-2?
Thankyou 3-9 best easy
Hold down the A button as you land on them and your jump off of them will be very high.
