  • The famous Mortier organ "Neptunus" makes a long awaited return appearance at the Grange on Sunday the 1st of October 2023. For me and most others Neptunus was the "star of the show" as prior to this it had not been rallied for almost 20 years! Despite having been tucked away for so long it still plays quite well, but more work is underway to getting it sounding even better. As you might be able to tell, this organ is famous for its very unusual (but not original) facade, as well as its large repertoire of Clarke/Watts music. Lots of blanks in my tune knowledge here, please help me out!

Good to see a video of Neptunus, It used to come to Nottingham Riverside Festival and I've still got some of the tapes of Neptunus which I brought when I saw it and one which I found in charity shop.

0:00 Peta's Concert Waltz. Composed by the late Steve Clarke for his wife, Petronella.
    5:25 The Bullfrog.
    8:24 Edmundo Ros Medley.
    15:04 Song of the Clyde.
21:24 Wilhelmina is Plump and Round.
I was at the keyframe, considering this organ hadn't been played for nearly 20 years it played remarkably well!, we did bit of remedial work and the longer we played it the better it got, still problems with four of the registers, trombones and xylophone work if you hold the valve down manually as Stuart Mulcrow was doing here, harmonic flutes are barely playing, an air supply problem we think and cellos don't play at all but all in all the organ gave a good account of itself!

Thanks very much Peter! I was also surprised with how well it sounded, as you say not perfect perhaps but considering that it's been tucked away for so long it sounded very well, in fact after being played for a bit it began to sound even better as the day progressed.

The Neptune figure looks like he’s ready for floundering-has his “gig”! Surprised they didn’t animate him, too!

I find that facade very fascinating and interesting especially those animated mermaids moving the fishes in time with the music very unique!
Sound wise it plays very well despite it not being out a long time.

Yes, we were all surprised with how good it sounded. It was quite a surprise to see the organ out and about again (and my first time seeing it in person - the last year it was rallied was the year I was born!) and it certainly attracted quite a crowd whilst it was playing.

@@MechanicalMusicTravels That organ has one of the most creative and fun facades ever! I'd dream if I owned an organ in a dream mine would have Punch and Judy as bell ringers, the policeman as a bandmaster and the crocodile moving to the woodblock sounds.

@@HarryYT22 That's a good idea! To be honest. I'm really surprised there aren't any Punch and Judy-themed organ facades out there already.

Nice, do you have its serial number (older type baxophones) ? Incredible profusion of sounds, in need of more work, but this organ has an exceptional potential. It could also use one or more bubble machines, and colored power foam coming down from the trailer

Thanks! This organ is quite an early Mortier so I'm not sure whether it has a serial number or not, early organs often didn't have one.

Wait! Theres more! Notice the animated clams what looks like a crab at the bottom right.

    • @MechanicalMusicTravels
      @MechanicalMusicTravels  Před 9 měsíci

Correct. The clams work with each register change I and the crabs with the register cancel, or at least from what I could tell. I think it's a shame the crabs aren't connected to the woodblock if you ask me!
