Saw him for the first time on a MD Festival DVD in the mid 2000s and had never seen a drummer like him. Around 2012/13 got to see him at a drum clinic in the UK. Amazing player. RIP.
So sad that he died at such a young age. He was a pioneer and had amazing talent and creativity. Such energy when he drums and powerfully explosive fills. He will be missed indeed. RIP Aaron

Aaron was the drummer that awoken my passion for drumming, I was in highschool, and a friend from WoW showed me the clip of "Yeah" from drumfest. I was 15 at the time and a "drummer of necessity" in my music class. Confidence is the right word that you put, but i will always remember him saying "always come back to the one" basically you are free to go wild or let your passion run free, just come back to the one. I'm so thankfull that he inspired me when he did. His inspiration gave me confidence to let me express myself though drums!
I prayed this prayer during a relationship with a girl. I felt anxiety throughout the relationship and kept playing this song every night. 2 weeks later the girl ended the relationship, leaving me broken and confused. I then ran to drugs, pornography, and success to fill the void. None of it worked and then quarantine hit. And when quarantine hit it helped realize that I was building my life on falling sand, so I finally gave my life to God. Fast forward to now, I can listen to this song and look back on that time when I was praying for God to put me in the fire, GOD IS SO GOOD. I'm praying the same prayer now but this time I'm living for God and wanting Him to use me to impact people for His kingdom.
That man used his whole arm in just about every stroke on those heads; and he did it so fast that it looked like he was swinging in a fight with wood. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to get in the way of one of those swings. Imagine the welt that you would get if that stick hit you on the back of your arm! I noticed that as he got older he used more of his wrists in his strokes, and not so much of the full arm swings that he used in church.

I also play at church no fancy set up, no drum monitor or ear in. Aaron Spears is truly I great individual my prayer is that he got it right with his maker. My sincere condolence to Aaron's family, friends, church family, chops family, shed family, Drumeo family, Drummer World family , Zildjian family, Ghost note and host of other person that met in personally, professionally and those who only met him through his music. Ive had arguments with other drummera about how Aaron Spears is the most under appreciated drummer around. I was telling my wife about it last week, saying more people should know who Aaron Spears is. She had no idea who he was and that made me sad. His 06 performance of Caught Up will always be one of my favorite videos.
He may not have created the gospel chops style, but his role in bringing it to the masses literally introduced a whole new fill vocabulary to all styles of drumming, to the point where traditional roll type fills almost sound archaic now compared to that powerful linear hand-foot stuff. He truly transcended gospel music and has influenced drumming at its widest levels. Bravo and RIP Aaron Spears.

Any drummer can swing their arms in the air, when performing chops, but it was Aaron phrasing, timing, and placement, that made him iconic, and sets him aside from most drummers.
