Overall for less than $1600 , parts and Labor by myself . I got a brand new running truck . I love my 97 Ford Expedition . Got 219k on the dash . Totally worth it than investing a new truck . It would be great if you could do more videos on the 5.4L V8 2V. SOHC Triton engines. I own a 2002 F-250 super duty 2WD ( why exactly they decided to make a rear two wheel drive super duty, I haven't the foggiest of a clue why..) with the 5.4 liter two-valve Triton and I have a difficult time finding much helpful information that pertains to my specific truck model and/ or the engine model ( respectively). I have scoured the web trying to learn as much as I possibly can about doing work on these things. I am not a mechanic, I just started learning about this stuff for a few reasons, one is that I want to be able to work on and fix my own vehicle, two, I don't want to pay for someone else to work on my stuff ( cause I am cheap, mechanics are not. And I am broke..) and lastly, I just plain like to learn and know about useful things. Knowledge is power in my book. So, if it's possible to do more videos for the 5.4 liter 2- valves, it would be awesome. Maybe some videos on my particular model of super duty, I had a question about the ABS system and cruise control on my truck. I have retrieved the ABS module DTCs for both of the front wheel speed sensors input missing, further inspection showed that I am missing the tone rings on both sides, therefore my ABS doesn't work and neither does my cruise control due to the ABS system fault codes ( I believe), I am a little confused about the whole procedure to fix the tone rings problem. I was led to believe that I would just be able to slap on some new tone rings but when I looked for replacements online I can't find any other than the one tone ring for the rear differential, when I talked to someone at the local "stealership" ( as I like to call it) the had told me that there is no replacements for just the tone rings and that I would have to buy a whole new hub assembly for each side running about $300.00 or so a piece. However, I have seen videos ( one of them your's) where they're able to just swap out the broken tone rings. So I am getting some contradicting information hear and I cannot justify spending that much on new hub assemblies, nor could I even if I wanted to cause I cannot afford to pay that. Some clarification on the subject would be greatly appreciated 🙏 also I would like to thank you for the videos that you have made and for sharing your knowledge and experience with people like me that have the willingness and need to learn about this stuff. Keep up the good work!!!! 👍👍🤘🤘

So I did the VCT solenoid and low and behold bank 2 was a Dorman.They both looked fine ,unnnnnntil I looked at the ends.The snap ring and all the guts are gone.I don't know where the parts are but I'm assuming they went down.Haha I think I watched every video of yours ,but you might have to make another one.This ones another great video.

    I own a 02 King Ranch F150 with the 5.4 and I was wondering if and when the time comes for a 'crate motor' is there a better motor platform to switch to at that time or something more appealing to a mechanic that is flawless? Just curious before I cross that bridge because I bought this truck for the wife and she liked it for a couple weeks and then decided she liked my Jeep better and well, I started driving the KR and to be honest it's become one of my favorite possessions. I could buy anything I wanted new or otherwise, anything and this appeals to me. I like everything about it so I decided to rebuild it or replace parts. My question is who to use and what motor or replacement? Love your channel and subscribe. Thanks, edit to add, I'm fifty or sixty miles north of Tulsa.

    I want to really thank FordTechMauloco for this awesome video. I am somewhat mechanically inclined but by no means a real good mechanic. I watched this video and used it to perform this job on my 2003 F150 with 220,000 on it and the job went very very smooth. Thanks for giving me the confidence and instruction to do so. One note to the beginner. Be careful when removing your valve covers. The PCV baffles are glued on plastic inserts inside the covers from the factory. They can break off.

    Hi, FordTechMakuloco….
    I used your Video to help me with the timing chain replacement, with roller rockers, lifters, oil and water pump replacement for a 2003 Expedition 5.4L 2V. I took the intake off along with the oil pan to help with the job. It took longer, but it was worth it. I took my time. It took me about a week to complete the job. The crankshaft alignment tool did not fit the dowel pin. The tool elongate opening was too short, but I still used it to line it up to the opening. The tool to compress the valve springs did not work while in the car. I was going to replace the lifters because it could be the point of failure for the roller rockers. I did not need the valve spring compressor tool. To remove the roller rockers, I use a screwdriver to remove the roller rockers, and to replace the roller rocks I would a hook to pull the roller rockers on the lifters. It is easy to do. I put a hook into the oil hole and pulled it. Make sure the new lifters are compressed. It took very little time to do, if the intake was removed. I had to put a foot on top of the engine to get enough energy to pull. I took the oil pan off to look at the bottom of the pan. If I discovered metal particles, I would look at the connecting rod bearings. The engine had 220K and everything looked good. The roller rockers look good, but a few lifters seem to had failed. Meaning, I was able to compress them with my hand. The only other point of failure was the passenger side chain tensioner. It was compressed and unable to provide tension, so the chain was floppy and slapping the guides. The guides were still intact. I replaced the oil and water pumps with new ones. The only problem was replacing the passenger side valve cover. I had to use ultra gray gasket maker to seat the valve cover gasket in place. It was difficult to get the cover over the cam caps close to the fire wall. When I was able to get the cover over the cam cap, I double check gasket was still in place. That part of the valve cover is the point of failure for oil leaks. It was important to turn the engine over without the crank sensor connected. I was worried the roller rockers might fall off, but it was ok. After startup I only was able to perceive the click sound of the roller rockers for only a second. Once the lifters were doing their job the engine was very smooth. The only other issue was the PCM P1000 code. I ran the Expedition for about 30min on the highway and the next day did it again the code was gone.

    No phasers! If ford would had enough sense to put metal inserts in the heads for the spark plugs, this would have been an awesome engine. You make the job look easy, took me 2 days at home to do the same job.

  • @mountaingrownnomad4212

    A sincere thank you. Especially for the disclaimer at the end regarding doing the job without all the specialty tools. Timing was secondary to having removed the heads for a seized piston. I read through Alldatas info in advance and then followed this video, pausing periodically. After completion. I had worries if gauging the locations were off that I could cause a lot of damage but at the conclusion with the explanations you gave. I feel very confident that all the timing is correct. Tomorrow I still need to put all of yhe top end together but I'm confident timing is correct. Thanks again!

    This timing job video made doing a timing job DIY style look really really easy. As someone who wouldnt have a lot of money laying around, our biggest fear is having Valves and Pistons kiss. I just reached 140k on my '02 F150 with the 5.4 2v and when I heard you say the words of now this timing set will go for another 150k-200k. I should start saving up. Great video and my EGR tube did the same thing and came lose the way yours did in the video when I replaced my cracked Intake Manifold. I need new Valve cover gaskets so I'm glad the covers squeeze by it. Great video 👍 and lots of hidden and helpful info/input.

    • @MrUbiquitousTech
      @MrUbiquitousTech Před 4 lety +5

      Yes, the plastic one is hydraulic so it needs a seal to contain the oil to build up pressure. The cast iron one is mechanical and therefore doesn't need a tight seal.

      ford put a ton of money into a new plastic tentioners for some reason... so high heat or high pressure situations imo require metal

    @FordTechMakuloco I’m a Ford guy and i watch/appreciate all of your videos! I have a 2002 F250 Super Duty 5.4L and I’m doing valve cover gasket/lash adjuster/roller follower job! (Right after a broken dipstick tube at manifold job!) I watched your 3V roller follower/ lash adjuster removal and installation video, but i just want to verify if its the same process on a 2V engine as far just having cam at base circle when removing roller followers and when they are at base circle do i have to worry about any of the valves hitting a piston at all? And second do you have any suggestions on what roller followers/lash adjusters to buy? Lastly are there any tips you have for these things I’m fixing? Thanks again for all of the videos keep them coming!

      I know you posted this a long time ago but I'm hoping you got to this project by now. Question 1- How did you remove the lash adjusters and followers? I'm guessing its the same as the 3v's and the same tools? Question 2- If you did do the job what parts did you get? I see rockauto has some different makes but the melling ones are on B/O so maybe I should get a good quality set from NAPA or Orielys, I defiantly don't want to a job like this twice you know.

    I always give a “free labor” water pump on these when I get in there. Not because I’m such a nice guy (I am...) but because I banged my hands on that SOB so many times and it is so easy to get out of the way and easy to clean up for a new one. The pumps are reasonably priced too.

    I had a crazy bad knocking/metal slapping metal sound and I thought she was a gonner!! 03 F150 5.4l timing chain and oil pump job complete! I seemed to have lost quite a bit of oil pressure to the passenger head. The seals on the tensioners were trashed but she's also got 250,000 miles. Had some scoring on the cam and cam towers. I mic'd them out and most were within .001 - .002. I did have a couple that were around .010. Made me nervous but I have to risk it for now so I put it back together. 7 of the 8 lash adjusters in the passenger head weren't pumped up so they were replaced. No start up knock and purrs like a kitten! The only thing I did different was that I left the oil in the pan for the majority of the job in hopes that if I had any debris get away from me I'd hopefully be able to drain it out with the oil. I'm also a huge fan of using a shop vac with a longer clear flexible 1" hose duct taped to the end so I can get into smaller spots like the oil pan, oil ports, around the roller followers, and spark plug holes in hopes it would pick up any extra garbage. I also fished a 1/4" hose down into the oil pickup tube and blew a little air and brake cleaner through it and then flushed the pan with brake cleaner to wash out any debris. It was a calculated risk but low air pressure was used in the pickup tube. I travel the country side for work as a millwright out of KC. If I'm in your area, lunch is on me!
