As an American I have never watched anything with Rick Mercer, a Canadian comedian and TV personality. Today I am very excited to watch a segment by Rick Mercier called Canada Explained, where Rick talks about "everything you wanted to know about Canada but were afraid to ask". Worked in Metro Hall next door to CBC Headquarters for years. We would see him out and about all the time.BUT try to get tickets to tapings of his show for it. They were gone as soon as they were available. One of my co-workers once said...I am going to take a vacation day and as soon as I see him walking up the street I am going to jump him and get tickets

Rick Mercer did a famous special called Talking To Americans during the 2000 US Presidential Election. It's classic. What makes it so great is that Rick isn't just telling jokes. The majority of the humour comes from people's responses to the most basic questions - even from Harvard University students, and professors. It's amazing.
I see this recommended to American's a lot, but there is 2 major problems.
1) It's 23 years out of date now. People who were born that year are graduating university now.
2) It's full of Canadian references that anyone not from here, and not around in 2000 wouldn't get. Such as who Peter Mansbridge is, or Lucien Bouchard, etc.

You should watch Rick Mercer talking to Americans. It's pretty old now but it's still funny. If you can find some Rick Mercer reports shows they are very entertaining.
My favourite parts of Rick Mercer Report was his rants, and when he interacted with Jann Arden. Those two were each other's best nemesis' and friends. Jann's humour was so interactive with Rick's.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out a few of Rick Mercer's "rants". They are his signature. (along with "Talking-to-Americans").
Also, his television series "Made in Canada" is one of the great english-language Canadian comedy series. Kind of a cross between The Gary Shandling Show and WKRP in Cincinnati. It is an inside look at the television production industry.
Tyler, now look up Mary Walsh, who took on our elected leaders directly in person where they work through her character Marg Dellahunty - Princess Warrior. So effective was she, that she actually became part of the political conversation. It could be argued that we would not know Rick Mercer if it were not for Mary Walsh.
She was hilarious and there were some politicians who actually tried to avoid her but it was soo funny
god.. Mary is a force of nature! :) I also love how the 22 minutes cast would just walk into the PM's office and start ribbing with him. The videos with PM Jean Chrétien are priceless.
@@ioncladstudio2688 For me it's when Marg started necking with Stephen Harper. She actually made him look human ever so briefly. Making politicians look human was her superpower. (I'm sure she did more for Chrétien's popularity than any PR)
I met her once when she was performing in London (Ontario) in the later days of CodCo. I was unfortunately star-struck and stuttered and stammered through the conversation.

Closer to The Office I would say; it's far edgier than the two you mentioned, though Made In Canada (or the Industry as it was sold internationally) preceded it. It's a brilliant show. Now back on cbc gem :)
Mercer was just named to Canada’s Walk of Fame last week.
The Westminster system of government is NOT absurd. It provides much more stability and is preferable to most other models.

While I agree for the most part, I would point out that while the Westminster system is very functional, it isn't perfect. As far as I know, most Canadians think it needs some revision and tweaks to make it a little more democratic and prevent some of the potential abuses possible within the system. I don't think anyone is seriously proposing we throw the entire system out and try another system entirely, because you're right in that the system is highly functional in its current form.
The reason that most people want to make those tweaks to the system is that the Westminster system was initially designed for a different era and for a different purpose that most Canadians think is outdated and should be left in the past; give people some form of representative democracy *while preserving colonial power and dominance over Canada*. It's that last part that most people have an issue with. The Westminster system is a representative democracy with loopholes that allow wealthy elites to entrench themselves in power and supress the intrests of minorities and the poor, all while maintaining the appearance of being more democratic than it actually is. This isn't a bug in the system; it was designed to work this way. This is the part that most Canadians want to change.
Now, does this in-built colonial disposition make the Westminster system undemocratic? No. There still is a LOT of democratic power in it, just not as much as it looks like on the surface. Does it make the system non-functional? Absolutely not. It's blend of representative democracy and robust bureaucracy is still one of the most efficient forms of democratic government humanity has ever created. It just needs some tweaks to break from those antiquated colonial roots and be more representative of the values of the Canadian people.
Sorry for the rant, but analyzing political systems is kinda my thing, lol.

But having seen what this can mean in reality (in Indonesia where I used to live), it can also end up with very convoluted mechanisms to enable a diversity of representation. To the point where the power holders end up being the same as with a less "representative" system. Just saying, "proportional representation" may not be such an easy thing to achieve other than as an electoral mechanism.
The system is sound. The politicians, however, not so much!

He legit caused a couple of significant diplomatic kerfuffles over the years, same as French language "Quebecois" RMR equivalent, a French language CBC show called "Infoman".
He was also put in a headlock by Jean Chrétien, who was PM at the time.

Rick Mercer is a Canadian Icon. Was able to go and watch the taping of his show a couple of times and after each taping, he stood at the lobby and shook everyone's hand and took pictures with everyone who wanted one. Very kind.
I served him several bowls of noodle soup. He SEES service people.

I LOVED when Rick took Jann Arden up to the CN Tower to do the Sky Walk. Before she went up she asks him "Why don't you ever get Anna Murray to do this crap?" Absolutely hilarious. And also loved him meeting the baby polar bear at the Toronto zoo. Too too adorable.
My favourite episode! Another fun moment was the zipline in Calgary when she signed the consent form "Celine Dion" 😂 And Rick managed to snag newly elected mayor Naheed Nenshi to join in the fun.
The Algonquin park bear tagging is another favourite. Those cubs melted everyone's hearts, including Rick's.

Yes, Rick Mercer is so sarcastic and delightfully so right about what he speaks about. I wish he had talked to high schoolers to get the point about how the country works. Dry humour is much better than dry text books.

All his shows had "Rick Rants" and they were awesome. They were about a minute long and it was just him walking and talking through the back streets of Toronto.

Rick Mercer started off with a 2 minute rant on a show called This Hour Has 22 Minutes, many of these rants were compiled and eventually became the Rick Mercer Report a show unto itself, he also had segments Talking To Americans asking Americans questions about Canada. Many of these things are available on CZcams should you be interested.
Definitely watch more of Rick Mercer - his Rants and Talking to Americans are his best known spiels.
Rick Mercer was part of a comedy troupe that had a brilliant news parody show called "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". It was fashioned as a newscast, and featured real news-like stories involving current events. As well. the 4 stars all had recurring characters who did their own political satire. So it was part news and part sketch comedy. Political and social commentary. The cast were all Maritimers, and they absolutely rocked it. It was riotously funny! It enjoyed years of success, and for sure there are CZcams clips out there. Rick Mercer went on to star in his own show, "The Rick Mercer Report", carrying on with political satire and social commentary. I'm so glad that you discovered him! There's a whole world to discover.
The 4 original cast members of “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” were all Newfoundlanders, as is Rick Mercer. Two of them had been part of CODCO, another social & political satire show.
You should find a broadcast of Rick from the show " This Hour has 22 mins" when he went to Washington and randomly asked Questions of Americans ..it was truly hilarious 😅😂😂😂😂

Rick mercer had the best job in all of Canada for a long time. The way he would do random jobs across the entire country was amazing. He's eternally a Canadian icon.
I always watched Rick Mercer's program. He and his writers were always spot on, humourously, and his insights were great, but truthful. Laughed at every program - but sad he is no longer doing them.

Yes, this all definitely happened. It took place in fall 2008 through early 2009. Political comedy is a rather beloved tradition in Canada and the 90s and 00s had some of the best.
Some of what Rick was suggesting was kind of simplifying the issues, but it's comedy so there's some license there.
Yes, this is what I came here to say. This was what happened just before the 2008 recession. So, yes, they were extremely wrong about the economy.

rick mercer is a national treasure! i remember when he broke the CBC website trying to get an MP named "stockwell day' to legally change is name to "doris day". his political humour is amazing and talking to americans is a must watch!

Rick Mercer is the standalone of what started as CodCo, a Newfie comedy show making fun of news of the day, politicians and of course MAINLANDERS (including americans). Being wildly popular CBC allowed for This Hour Has 22 Minutes to begin. The original cast of CodCo started This Hour and picked up Mercer. Mercer left to do his own thing afterwards for The Rick Mercer Report. This Hour still runs to this day. By dah way bye he'iz a newfie too.

Hah I forgot about Cod Co. Canada has always been good at these kinds of shows. It's hard to make politics fun and funny, but they totally succeed.
Rick's rants were great but I really like that he would visit obscure Canadian places or Canadian jobs/Companies and get in house reporting and trying things out. Very funny and informative.
I adored his test drive of a leading edge electric car in Quebec and the Aquaruim in BC.

Yeah, Rick Mercer is pretty awesome. He is also fearless. He is not shy to interview anyone and poke fun at them. He also graciously accepts being poked at right back.

He is a genius & national treasure, he’s style is irony and satire and no one does it better. You need to go down The Mercer Report rabbit hole and you will love his earlier work on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, especially his specials called Talking to Americans. Nothing you have seen yet about the dumbest things Americans say comes close to what Rick gets them to say.
The Mercer Report was a great show. It was pretty comparable to The Daily Show or John Oliver in the US. He came out of a show called This Hour has 22 Minutes, which is a satirical news comedy show that also produced quite a few notable Canadian comedians. Unfortunately, The Mercer Report was cancelled a few years back, but 22 Minutes is still going. Political comedy has been a mainstay of Canadian entertainment for many decades now; in fact, it's kinda hard to make it in the Canadian comedy industry without doing at least some political comedy.

@@user-dn4rx8ev3j The only reason that I didn't put the Colbert Report in there is that Mercer never did the faux-conservative satire that was the halmark of that show. There's more paralells between Rick Mercer and Stephen Colbert as comedians than there are between The Mercer Report and The Colbert Report, if you catch my meaning.
But yeah, it's pretty fair to say that Rick Mercer is Canada's Stephen Colbert. Given the timeline of Mercer's career though, maybe "Canada's John Stewart" might technically be more accurate, but his comedic style is closer to "post-Colbert Report" Colbert.
@Tyler Bucket - The Mercer Report was a fantastic weekly 30 min show. It really was fabulous. Part of his show was visiting somewhere from coast to coast to coast. We all learned from him. He saw polar bears up close and personal, he patted a bear while it was hibernating and did a segment on what it was like (simulated) with zero gravity, just to name a few. His Rants were also popular due to his dry sense of humour but with a serious undertone

Tyler is correct when he says that Americans don't know how their own system of government works. For example, section 3 of the 20th amendment allows congress to choose an Acting President
if the President has not been chosen by Congress by inauguration day. This is widely unknown in America and it completely baffles many people. They think that January 6th is a date set in the constitution whereby any challenges to the certified results of the electoral college cannot continue on. But that date is nowhere to be found in the constitution and the law that it's in has never been ruled on by the scotus even though it clearly negates section 3 ( by precluding congress from being able to exercise that provision) .
The American system has a lot of possible loopholes that could be problematic. However, there were longstanding understandings between the two parties that these loopholes are not to be touched because doing so would create a situation that did not benefit either party. Fixing these issues would require a constitutional amendment which noone in power wants to go through. A lot of the political turmoil in the US last decade can be linked to people coming to power who decide to ignore those unwritten conventions and try to use the loopholes. So things that in the past appeared to work smoothly, now appear to break down.
@@przemekkozlowski7835 Those "loopholes" are actually the supreme laws of the land that were put into place by the founding fathers.. and the amendments were later ratified by 3/4ths of the states. The principle of the rule of law demands that they be followed, and that any subsequent laws passed be in compliance with those supreme laws. That is why there is a supreme court.. to ensure that any laws passed by a temporary congress are in compliance with the constitution. As for unwritten conventions.. I agree that they exist. It is one of the reasons why the electoral count act of 1887 was never challenged, despite its blatant interference with the 12th and 20th amendments. I also understand that challenging it would create a shtshow, since no one wants the volatility that comes with it.. especially the establishment from both parties. Just look at what happened in the 2000 election for an example of that when the scotus invoked the 14th amendment to shut down the recounts that the democrat run florida supreme court ordered to be conducted in select counties that would favour their party's candidate for president. None of that would have helped him btw.. since the republican congress was prepared to choose bush over gore no matter what the recount said. And that would have been their constitutional right under the 12th amendment.. which would not have been subject to judicial review.
Rick was great at educating through comedy. He is a national treasure as far as I'm concerned. We enjoyed and learned things that we normally would find a pain to try even try to learn. I loved his shows.
Rick Mercer is one of our gems. A comedian and political satirist.
His shows (both "This Hour has 22 Minutes" and Rick Mercer Report) were both "news" shows, satirizing current events like "The Daily Show" down in the States.
Rick Mercer report was his spin off from 22 Minutes. It would generally be a combination of a few types of segments:
* Some satire skits on current events, especially political events. (Like this one)
* Some Canadian cultural segments, highlighting aspects of Canada, usually involving a road trip out to show a local business or industry, sometimes with a guest like Jan Arden
* A Charity push, usually in conjunction with schools across canada. He was a big supporter of "Spread the Net", a challenge to buy mosquito netting for Africa. Schools would fundraise for the challenge and he'd give shoutouts through the season. And at the end of the season he'd personally visit the winning Elementary, High School and University.
* And his most famous skit, the Rant segment, where he'd rant for a few minutes while walking up and down an alley (usually with distinctive graffiti), ranting on a topic of the day, similar to the Television pointer method in this skit, but also pointing out various absurdities innate in our system while advocating for change.
He'd also quite often do skits with politicians and other Canadian celebrities, putting them in awkward situations while talking about their personal causes or what they're doing in an outside the studio setting. (Check out his fishing trip with Bob Rae for example).
Rick is very obviously an NDP (New Democrat Party) supporter, but most politicians from all segments loved him; doing a segment with him (or with the Air Farce or with 22 Minutes) was a way for a politician to get some airtime, raise how aware the rest of Canada was to them, and usually at a trivial cost of a bit of pride from being made fun of. Liberals, NDP and Green party MPs usually loved to get on these shows, and even most Conservatives and Bloque Quebecois and Reform party MPs would jump at the chance too.
Note that Stephen Harper (former Prime Minster, leader of the Conservatives), was one of the exceptions; he was notorious for not really having a sense of humour, especially after becoming PM. He rarely showed up on these shows and clearly didn't want to be there when they managed to corner him. (But as 22 Minutes pointed out in one of their retrospectives, BEFORE he became PM, they had trouble keeping Stephen OFF of their shows; he was all but begging to get in front of their cameras)

Rick is amazing! I miss his show SO much. When he was on even our kids enjoyed listening and learning about our country through him. He is one of Canada’s gems, for sure!!

The episode of Rick Mercer Reports shown is from around Feb 2009. So most of the people seen in stills on the TV are no longer in those positions. In fact I don't think any of them are now.
Stephen Harper resigned as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada after the party lost the October 2015 election to the Liberal Party led by Justin Trudeau, the current PM. In Aug 2016, Stephen Harper resigned his seat as a member of parliament.
The woman shown as Governor-General, Michaëlle Jean, held that position from Sep 2005 to Oct 2010. She was the first Haitian-Canadian and first black person to hold the office of Governor-General. The current Governor-General is Mary Simon, the fifth woman and first indigenous person to hold the office. She was appointed in Jul 2021
Rick Mercer is a native of Newfoundland which produces some of the best comics our country has....love their humor
Rick is a Canadian icon. His "rants" (almost always shot in one continuous take and at a machine-gum pace) are legendary. He has a knack for explaining (or at least highlighting) the inanities, if not the outright insanity of our society. And he does it all with a wicked sense of humour.
That Governor General was Michaëlle Jean. She was one of the best ever and much loved - though not universally loved as that's nearly impossible in Canada.
Yup, The Mercer Report was a Canadian news comedy show on the CBC. The two others were "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" and "Canadian Air Farce"
The beauty of Rick's comedy is that it's also a teaching session as well.. it made the irony of our screwed up government more relatable to the common man/woman. I used to love his rants when he was on the political comedy show.. This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

Everything Rick Mercer ever did is gold but my favorites are his interactions with Don Cherry the hockey coach and commentator. My favorite was when Rick asked Don to coach his amateur hockey team. Don "what position do you play?" Rick " I can't skate and I don't know anything about hockey" Don "so you're an owner".
Then there was the time they went shopping for a suit at Don's tailor.

I think the biggest difference between American and Canadian elections is the fact that Americans are always campaigning. We can wrap up an entire election in about a month while you start running for office as soon as the president is sworn in. That and the fact that you're stuck with your guy for four years no matter what he does makes me like our system better.

When Rick retired a few years ago, it was a sad sad day for all of us. His show was called "made in Canada" with funny bits. The bests being the sections he did with Jann Adren (a Canadian singer), Rick's Rants, and Talking to American's. if you can find them on you tube feel free to spend your free time laughing hysterically while actually learning things about Canada. Rick Mercer is just one of many Canadian genious comics. Many are well known south of the border, but Rick performed for the Canadian crowd. And he did it very well as you can clearly see.

He still does the odd skit..very funny and informative. I love his work.
Rick is a national treasure. I had the pleasure of seeing him at a Just for Laughs show in Toronto years ago, and a couple of months later, I ran into him in an elevator at the CBC building. He was very friendly and down to earth. A friend went to high school with him, and she said he was a great guy then, too.

Rick is a Newfoundland Comedian and is very funny in his approach to politics. All of what he explained is true with a comical twist. Check out Rick Mercers "Talking to Americans" series , it's priceless.

Maybe as a result of Canadian humour being a mélange of British and American, there are some great Canadian comedians. Seth Rogan, Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis, Heidi Foss, Martin Short, the late John Candy and Matthew Perry, Michael J Fox. For a great satirical take on the meme Canadian, you must watch some Bob & Doug Mc Kenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas), or some older stuff by Norm Macdonald. 😂

The Mercer Report is well worth watching. He spent most of his time out of the studio, participating in quirky community events across the country. I caught a rerun recently of the time he helped round up sheep on a Newfoundland island to take them by dory across to the mainland. They finished off with a traditional cod chowder supper.
A worthy successor to Rick Mercer is Jonny Harris, another Newfoundland lad, who has a show called Still Standing. He visits small towns to see how they're still managing despite businesses and young people moving away and what they do to bring them back. And after interviewing lots of people in town, he does a stand-up routine for them about them. Funny as heck, but loaded with love and compassion.
Rick Mercer is a national treasure. His 'rants' are superb. His show is well worth the watch.
I think you've watched some of his stuff before. He did a thing called "Talking to Americans" where he'd get them to say all kinds of silly things. Managed to get a few big name politicians with it too. lol

It's technically true that the governor-general has the power to dissolve parliament and force an election if Parliament votes that they don't have confidence in the governing party however it doesn't happen in practice because the governor-general always act under the direction of the prime minister so the governor-general can call an election without being told to do so by the Prime Minister but has never done so in modern history. Although, it almost did not long after this video was produced.
It did happen a couple of times in Australia but not in Canada.
Yeah, Canada's head of state is the British Monarchy, but it's mostly just a figurehead position that's kept around mostly for pomp and circumstances and out of inertia. 99.9% of the time it's expected to just rubber stamp things and basically be the underlying foundation to keep things going while Parliament churns with minority governments and elections and what not.
If the Monarchy actually tried to do something against the will of the government, that would probably trigger a rebellion faster than word would get across the Trans-Atlantic fibre cables.
There are people that keep advocating for removing the monarchy. For me personally, I'm a laissez-faire type. I recognize that their roles are important for the structure of our governance and to keep it going smoothly. So as long as they don't try to act against the will of the people, I'm fine with leaving things as they are. Otherwise we'd need to replace them with something similar, that would probably ultimately cost just as much and be a PITA to manage and sort out regardless.
@@Taeolasthe Head of State is the Monarch of Canada, who is also the British Monarch but, in reference to Canadian context they are neither considered nor referred to as the British Monarch. The title King/Queen of Canada supercedes the British equivalent in Canadian context.
