Calculate algebric parabolas on-the-fly.
You also have to FEEL the parabolas.

Thanks for these videos. I'm a demo main in competitive and I do all these things already, but it's still entertaining and relaxing to see how others play demo. Was looking for a good demo youtuber to just chill to. Keep it up, this channel is great for new demos

Actually, juggling as a demoman is not about luck. If you aim a pipe directly at the opponent's feet, it will blast him upwards. Then you can proceed to "juggle" them by consequently hitting their feet in mid-air. This will keep them airborne and immobile (= juggling), which is a very strong game mechanic. Mostly, however, two pipes will finish the job.
Also one thing you could've mentioned: use enemy buildings to kill people with splash damage. Even when you can't see the engineer, it's often useful to shoot one of his buildings and get him with the splash damage.
I prefer to aim for centre of mass so I hit more constantly, but if you can aim at their feet then good job! And yes I totally agree, getting splash damage off buildings is a great technique (see 12:04)!

One time while retreating and low on health I fired two random shots with my grenade launcher both landing direct hits on a pyro and a scout. Another time I detonated a sticky that sent a pyro flying right at me and direct shotted him with a pipe. He was kritzed as well. I felt like a pro. The next round I couldn't even land a single pipe...
I know I am 1 year late, but maybe it's because you played naturally on the first round and not later on.
Feel you; dominated the early game in an intelligence game, connection died, reconnected, never was able to land pipes properly again that round.

What I hate is that demo is defined by his stickies, despite me sucking with stickies but being godlike with pipes.
if you're bad at stickies you should be a hybrid demoknight.
I use the pipes way more than the sticky launcher and it doesn't help that my mouse doesn't work that well :V

That's a good guide, it's also worth mentioning that the enemies start strafing when they see you, so often you can shoot a first pipe in stop them and wait for them to notice you and start strafing to go for the second shot.
You make it look so easy. I will definitely start to practice.

Nice guide! I was thinking of doing a guide for pipes but I never got around to doing it because I didn't know how to put some of the concepts into words, but you pulled it off very well. Also if you feel like you keep dying too early to actually be able to get some pipes in to practice, try using the chargin' targe, it greatly increases your survivability.
honestly thanks to this video, and a couple others of yours and watching many others play demo and playing demo myself quite a bit i have gotten better at hitting pipes.

This helped so much! Before I could never hit pipes and always just hopes splash damage would save me. Now, I was dominating some spy earlier today, I think I got the technique down almost. However, rocket jumping soldiers still give me trouble.

I have possibly one of the worst pipe-aims in tf2, every direct hit i make is out of pure luck, which makes medium range combat very difficult because i can only spray and pray.
*Update:* My pipe aim has improved significantly, and my TF2 game in general. I'm not sure if I should leave my whining comment here.

Pro tip with pipes: Never use pipes, you only weapon is the stickybomb launcher.
I used the Sticky Jumper for so much that I forgot how it feels to lay down traps or charge at someone.
I started using it to practice direct hits whit pipes and, after some time, airshots (since I'm still really bad at pipe aiming).
I used to be a spy main for a long time, and I never thought that a "black scottish cyclops" would have been my favorite class to play.
I need to thank you for this video, it really helped me whit pipes and made me feel much more comfortable whit this beautiful drunk demolition man.
Also I think that the only way tr_walkway can help whit demo is timing a pipe for air shots. Then, when you got the basics, I'd suggest to go on an MGE server and play only Endif to actually airshot a conscious enemy that airstrafes (which might be a problem to deal whit) and that also tries to launch you in the air to do the same thing as you.

10k Demoman. Gaining ground/advantages, jumping/Rjumping, weapon switching, are all changes in movement or predictable movements. (Anything that will lower how much brain power or fingers someone is putting into dodging will increase your chance of hitting). Most classes have very common but different for each movement patterns abuse that.
Knowing what your enemy wants in depth is really useful.
Follow up pipes from the first hit are really consistent in hitting if you understand that good players know when they're gonna get hit by a pipe and will try and dodge the "second one" this only works if they're good and aware of you.
If it's a high percentage shot try and knock them up and follow up with a secondary. ALWAYS try and predict how people are gonna move when knocked around so you can hit the follow up shot its like chaining CC.
I was really good at following up on the first pipe with a second one especially on any airborne targets.
I would wait for any indication of a low percentage shot or wait for them to focus a teammate; you should really be waiting for any chance to increase your hit in any facet, I tried my best to avoid any "no-percentage" shot meaning any shot with no advantage and just use my pipes or stickies to keep the opponent away from me until I could get support. Usually playing demo man if someone gets on you you'll get assistance almost immediately if properly positioned so just making it really hard for the enemy to get near you is really useful.

when I picked demo for the first time, this is the conversation that went on in my head.
"Alright I've seem some people play this guy. This weapon is a pipe launcher that shoots bullet shaped bouncy balls that explode on impact. This one is a sticky bomb launcher that I can detonate with right click and then this is a bottle."
Later during the fight
"Alright so if I put my cursor directly on someone and shoot I cant hit them with a pipe."
"Well then how are we going to hit pipes?"
"Spam them into the chokepoint?
"Good enough for me"
I then proceeded to hit a total of 0 pipes and get my head blown off by a sniper.

This video was really great and Ik you covered trapping enemies with pipes and stuff, but would you say that using pipes and stickies to manipulate enemies into moving into an opposite direction be a viable strategy for hitting pipes? For example, shooting a sticky to the left of a jumpy scout so they double jump to the right and shooting a pipe into them because you know where they'll move. Nice work!

Hello! First of all good job on your video, it is very well made, the explanations are short but accurate and the examples really illustrate your points. However most of it is really common sense and basics! It is still useful and a good reminder for the ones who don't time their pipes and just hope for the best. What helped myself getting better at aiming pipes is: 1) not jump-crouch every 2 seconds, It's a very common mistake it does make you sometimes harder to hit but makes aiming pipes (or any other projectile) harder. 2) using stickies! Yes it might sound strange but using the sticky launcher to weaken/juggle or break the ennemy's momentum is a huge advantage to hit an easy pipe just afterwards! that is however just my opinion! still a very enjoyable video! =)

I personally improved by thinking every pipe as a lesson so where did I make a mistake or was it to early and so on I found these tips useful too but I think its also good to reflect on the missed shots

I know this was made a while ago but there's so many buildings you can shoot over and map geometry to bounce shots into control points and create havoc and they don't even know where you're shooting from, maybe something like that?
