It's like Christopher Lee once said: "You will be cast in bad parts - the important thing is to never be bad *in* them."
Fun fact: my fiancee broke up with me because I insisted on the song from this movie being our wedding theme. She wanted Tivoli Nights from Reptilicus instead.
I can't recollect the song, but she was probably right.
KRhretor You should've picked "Against The Ninja".
Sucks to b u!!!!
At least it wasnt Dude looks like a lady.
@@TheBrandonTenold someone apparently actually played it at their wedding
Fun fact: Haruo Nakajima stated that he staged the fight sequences to look like a pro wrestling match because they were more mobile. And Brandon, I wanted to shoot the screen during that song too.
7:54 Actually, they almost did. I’m reading a biography on Ishiro Honda and apparently in the book, it had quotes from the crew members where they were saying that Russ Tamblyn was just a big egotistical jerk. And at one point Ishiro Honda, who is arguably one of the most gentle and selfless people, actually had to hold himself back from slugging him. And Henry G. Saperstein agreed saying “Nick Adams… was a consummate pro and blended in very easily. Tamblyn was a royal pain in the ass.”
So Russ hated everyone, and everyone hated him.
@@beastmaster0934 Yeah, pretty much.
Never meet your heroes
@@MinscFromBaldursGate92 What do you mean by that?
@@nathanielschwartz425I think he means that some people we admire on camera might not be all that great in person. Guess Russ was one of those people, probably felt he was too good for this movie.
If you take the alternate ending into account, the beginning of the movie is Gaira getting revenge on Oodako for killing his and Sanda's "father" in the previous movie.
Yeah, but that Giant octopus avenged Baragon.
Yea
@@larry1350 Yes, Baragon died a hero too.... in the GMK movie that is..... Not the main ones.
The show, "Scooby -Doo: Mystery Incorporated", did an episode inspired by the film. They even obtained the rights to the song, "Words Get Stuck In My Throat"! It's pretty good! Then again, the series was pretty awesome IMO.
MegaMagicdog the Humongonunt or something
Exactly! "Battle of the Humungonauts". Season 1 episode 9.
MegaMagicdog was just scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else had seen that Scooby Doo episode! I really enjoyed that whole series and all it’s references.
Now that Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc ep makes sense to me!!
I was waiting for someone to point it out
Fun Fact: War of the Gargantuas is the film that inspired Brad Pitt to become an actor.
What?
To explain, during the 2012 Oscars, various big-name actors talked about their earliest movie memories. Brad Pitt's was, well, War of the Gargantuas.
Here comes a remake
Because if they could make a movie anyone could?
He was inspired to NOT be like Russ Tamblyn in this movie
Nick Adams wasn't about to earn any Oscars from the performances I've seen him in, but the guy did have a lot of charisma and screen presence, it's a pity he wasn't in this and that he died tragically only a few years later.
He died? Oh, shit.
I thought he changed nationalities and became Vladimir Putin - now I feel like such a gigantic atomic louse.
If Adams was in this, by the end of shooting, 1/4 of the crew would have been pregnant but nobody would have any injuries.
"what I was hungry. And chick fil a is closed on sunday"
This is the most relatable joke ive heard in a while
Filet
The fact that there is still no kaiju named Humungaclops is proof that this is an imperfect universe.
Make it happen. 😎👍🏻
Producers: Damn it, Brandon! We were under contract to film this musical number, so you're just going to sit there and watch it, biotch!
Brandon:[Look of careful deliberation, then levels the shotgun]
10:38 - Fun fact: That's Haruo Nakajima in the Green Gargantua (Gaira) suit. He's most famous for being Godzilla's suit actor from 1954 to 1972. I'm sure that he was used to having fireworks go off on him by now. "Just another day at the office."
This was his favorite role, as he got to finally use his face to act and not just his body.
Also, I read somewhere that he patterned the fight scenes after pro wrestling because it was easier to choreograph.
I'm pretty sure at one moment the explosives went off a bit too close to his ... area.
This channel is such a hidden gem. Definitely deserves so many more subs
Ye
Yes
I've been trying to tell everyone by word of mouth about Brandon's special brand (pun intended) of snark!!
Shoei Baba vs Antonio Inoki in monster suits!
absolutely
Also this is the first movie to introduce the iconic Maser Cannons
Smith Wesson and it's theme
Vocaloid and G-Fan It came back in Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth. A movie which I hope gets featured on this show soon
Smith Wesson I saw the maser Cannon on Godzilla and mothra battle for the earth
Wait this is where Maser Cannons we’re introduced?
@@NoahDaArk yup
At least this octopus monster wasn't a real one that the director ate.
Well, the effects director and part of the crew. "He was a not a good actor, but he was very good eating"-the late Haruo Nakajima (Godzilla)
The Special Effects Director was actually the one who ate it
+wstine79
*HEY, GONNA HAVE TO WAIT TO EAT IT UNTIL GODZILLA VS KING-KONG!!!!*
Kong found one on his island and stuffed his face I guess he likes calamari.
Which movie was that?
Fun fact from Wiki: Henry G. Saperstein cast Hamilton in what would be her final film role, a singer in The War of the Gargantuas, a Japanese Kaiju movie. Billed as a "Special Guest Star", Hamilton performs the song "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat", which was covered by Devo.
"Final film role"? I didn't even know she was in any other movies. Apparantly her singing was so bad it killed her acting career.
Haruo Nakajima was particularly fond of this role as it was one of the few monster performances where he could show part of his face, in this case his eyes, and could emote with his face. He also gives 110% with the lighter suit and the scenes of Gaira hauling ass are still notably cool.
There has recently been an English dub of the film that aired on Starz that is a straight up dub of the Japanese version, and includes all the references to Frankenstein, even replacing the word "Gargantua" with "Frankenstein".
it's the previously ultra rare International English Dub. Unfortunately they layered it over the Japanese version instead of using the proper print with English titles and credits which were different from the UPA english print that's reviewed here.
And it's STILL a better dub than this one.
Lol
TitanGoji! Damn, that would make this even more confusing; people bandying about the word 'Frankenstein' the way they did 'gargantua,' sometimes pluralizing it.
@@ShadowWingTronix no way! The international English dub is terrible
12:35 Correction: In the Japanese version, the characters seemed to imply that the brown Gargantua *was* Frankenstein from the first movie. It was really confusing.
I thought they were created from the remains of the Frankenstein monster.
They do not that. In the Japanese version, Sanda's origins are still obscure and convoluted. He may have grown from Frankenstein's severed hand, maybe not. He may have grown from the cells of Frankenstein, maybe not.
Now, in early drafts of the script (back when Dr. Bowen and Sueko were the main characters) Sanda was Frankenstein having survived the last film. But in the film as is, it's still frustratingly obtuse.
KeepingAngelaBaker In the Japanese version, Akemi mentioned how their “Frankenstein” returned to say goodbye to her, after his escape from the lab. Dr. Stuart later recalled how their “Frankenstein” escaped to Lake Biwa.
Both are supposed to be references to Frankenstein Conquers the World, but twisted around so confusingly.
Today is Kipp Hamilton's birthday, August 16th, 1934. I wish I could sing Happy Birthday, but the words got stuck in my throat.
Alex the Kaiju Fan don't make me pick you up and drop you
Now it's the day Kipp Hamilton died. January 29th.
She is not a great singer!
I don't know why I laughed, but that was a good joke
I see what you did there.
I think this is one of the best giant Japanese monster movies that isn’t a Godzilla movie.
Me too
It’s definitely in the top 5 behind, Mothra, and obviously the Gamera Heisei Trilogy
I always thought Frankenstein vs Baragon was the best but a lot of that is due to Baragon being my favorite kaiju. Lol
Only in Japan can one be attacked by a giant monster and have that giant monster be attacked by another giant monster. What is next, are they going to combine random vehicles to create a giant robot and have that fight giant monsters.
All those vehicles shall be driven by cattle farmers!
@goufr3540 There actually is a manga about random vehicles combining into giant mechas to fight giant monsters: Ken Ishikawa's Getter Robo. I highly recommend you check it out if you haven't since the series not only gets incredibly wild, but also helped inspire Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagann.

Fun fact: Russ Tamblyn possibly did get into a fight with the directer of this movie, so that could be a black eye that he has.
Don’t think they did fight tho, pretty sure Honda just had to restrain himself
@@speeder-gojira A lot of cast and crew, mostly crew, said the two had nearly come to blows a few times, and in a later confession, that the pair had gotten drunk and the night had to be stopped. I think they might have done just that, and just covered up the whole thing best they could.

A shotgun to the face is the perfect cure for crappy songs.
Best part: NO KENNYS!
because the green one eat them before they appeared
"HUMONGUCLOPS" ...a SyFy Channel Original Movie.
Russ Tamblyn saying "It could be a Gargantua" is a little like Vincent Price in THE TINGLER telling people "The Tingler is loose in this theatre!" He was the one who named it that a few days before, and almost no one else knows the name, but he expects them to know what it means.
I guess Attack on Titan (2015) can be considered a sequel to War of the Gargantuas...
No, this movie is a sequel to Attack on Titan. The logic is there (points to an Japanese monster movie).

Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated S01 E09 Battle of the Humungonauts pays homage to this movie, it starts in a Tiki bar with a woman singing" The Words Get Stuck in My Throat"
That musical number really was a colossal abomination.

She's a nobody that how much I don't like the Bitch.
Oh the shrill of it!
I actually thought it was pretty good.....
I don’t think she’s a bad singer, but that song is awful.
9:42 Holy shit Brandon is packing heat!!!
Little bit of 12 gauge slugs wouldn't hurt
Brandon saving the evening again. Thanks man!!! War of the Gargantuas was my first Kaiju movie as a kid. really interested in your take on it^^
This was a good video to watch after creeping myself out for an hour by watching a bunch of Rob Dyke videos.
My favorite daikaiju flick of all time, as well as one of the greatest sequels ever made 😊!
Fun-fact: Quintin Tarantino paid homage to this movie in Kill Bill Vol. 2 by having Uma Thurman and Daryl Hannah not only watch his copy of The War of the Gargantuas, but to have an epic showdown almost reminiscent of the two Gargantuas’ destructive bout in Tokyo.
Tyrant Gregcag Twice he has shown his personal copy at the New Beverly Cinema, where he manages it. Both times he sat behind me and my brother. He also had Russ Tamblyn have a cameo in the beginning of "Django Unchained."
Christopher Gomez Lucky you, man 😉!
Wow! Thanks for that little piece of trivia 😮. I never noticed that about DU.
@@VerisimilitudeFilms1 Russ's daughter Amber is also in that scene.
Roy Phillips Yes. Up in the window, looking down into the street.
The doctor is the youngest brother in the musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"(not a porn I swear, just look it up) and played a viking in another movie around this time... ☺
The soooong gets stuck my head. 😢😢😢😢
The movie should have gotten Aretha Franklin, Make her sing "Thick".
Now that's a real song from a real music artist.

They used to play this alot on TNT in the 90s
When TNT and AMC were at one point, A Great chanel. Now a days TV show more important then classic movies?
Monster Vison!
“100% weird.” That was the name of TNT’s special airing of classic horror flicks. One of which just so happened to be Gargantuas.
Toho need to get their shit together and make the Kaiju game we deserve...forget the one that came out for the 2014 movie, we need a Kaiju version of Super Smash Bros. where you get ALL the Godzilla's, his enemies/allies all the way from Anguiras up to the MUTO's, these Gargantuas, all of the Kong's...hell even Gorgo, Cloverfield...throw them all in! This game needs to exist and it needs to be made properly...
ToHo needs to get it's shit together and make more Godzilla movies the blow the fricking door off the HollyWeird crap .
Wasn't that Godzilla Unleashed?
@@DSpeir-pi6tm >HollyWeird
Oh fuck off with that shit.
So you've never played Rampage
Rampage doesn't count it's not licensed...I want a good Godzilla game not a quirky substitute for the king of the monsters.
Russ's performance and voice sort of reminds me of Mark Ruffalo's performance when he plays Bruce Banner.
I still see that green bastard in my nightmares to this very day.
War of the Gargantuans, it's a good Film. I enjoy Toho's monster Films. Thank you.
Something that should be noted about this movie, which this reviewer didn't note cause he's to busy delivering a MST3K impersonation - it's one of the few of these "kaiju's" that actually manages to be successfully SCARY at times. There are actually some pretty FRIGHTENING scenes in THIS flick, like that one in which which these two guys look down over the edge of a boat they're on and see this monsters hideous visage just below the waters transparent surface looking up at them hungrily ( shown briefly at 5:42 ), THAT's truly classic! There's also a pretty creepy and disturbing scene ( that wasn't shown in this video review ) where the malevolent green monster EATS a person on camera - puts her in his mouth and chews her! ! One of the FEW times in these kaiju movies you actually saw a monster do something like that directly to a human being ( they were usually just shown smashing buildings ).
Agree :)
Don’t be silly! It’s a GREAT movie 😎!

I've seen both BLADE RUNNER and SOLDIER multiple times and never once thought they were in correlation with each other...wow
This Twin Peaks prequel is weirder than I thought.
Man, Doc Amp had to really shovel himself out of the shit...but this time HE IS THE SHIT itself.
Then you should watch the sequel series. It's about to get weirder. ;)
Haa!!!
I Think when sanda and gaira fell into the volcano their cells were scattered which means that the movie Frankensteins army could be a Sequel to this one
Sanda was meant to have survived because early drafts of "Destroy All Monsters" featured him seen hanging around in Monsterland (but he did not have any presence in the story other than that).
what is your avatar?
Fun Fact: The beginning scene of Gaira fighting the octopus was the last scene they filmed with the prop after they did the confusing octopus scene from Frankenstein Conquers the World.
Another fun fact: The American distributors never used the octopus fight because it was not as good as the one in King Kong vs Godzilla.
Always a treat when you upload ☺
Brandon, I'd love to see your review on Toho's "The H-Man". It's a blob monster, vastly superior in every way to American versions. Terrified me as a kid on Friday nights TNT monster vision!
I just knew you would do this one next since you did Frankenstein conquers the world before it and this is technically a sequel since the gargantuans were made from Frankenstein’s cells
Bardock Because SCIENCE. ;)
I want “The Wooords Get Stuck In My Throat” to be played at my funeral - not a day sooner.
18:34: The Maser Cannon would go on to be the weapon of choice for the Japanese militaries in future Godzilla and other monster movies! With over 7 variants in the Heisei series alone! And this film’s use of the weapon gets a shoutout in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla in 2002, becoming that universes Kaiju defense force backbone weapon! It’s even referenced in 2019s Godzilla: King of the Monsters as the “Maser Turret” in the Monarch Godzilla monster base Castle Bravo!
I love the giant octopus looking over the Gargantua's shoulders.
Yes this movie is one of my favorite kaiju movies if only sanda and gaira fought godzilla in a movie
Saperstein had plans for that. One of the ideas he shopped around in the 1970's was Godzilla vs Gargantua
João Vitor I love that scene from the comics do you think the gargantuas could fit in the monsterverse
9:42 Canuck With A Shotgun, coming soon
It’s time for the Kaiju Curb Stomp.
My God! Kip Hamilton had a, let's say, interesting voice.
My reaction was that some of the notes also got stuck in her throat.
I heard she was a member of Frankie's Rat Pack, she was Carol Burnett's sister in law.
Finally, Gargantuabowl is here!
I'm gonna have that "words get stuck in my throat" crap stuck in my head for a while now thank you soooo much
Thanks for putting that song back in my head after getting it out of it 5 years ago
At 18:09 "Spear!! Spear!!, that building is broken in half!!".
Hey do a review of Dinosaurus! (1960) The Valley Of Gwangi (1969) and Disney’s Something Wicked this Way comes (1983)
The Producer of Dinosaur 1960 was the same person who did the Blob. He wanted Steve McQueen to star in Dinosaur but McQueen was tied up doing "Wanted Dead or Alive".
That musical number makes the Harmony Gold dub of Min May in SDF Macross seem tolerable.
Oh and Kip Hamilton was the girlfriend of Henry Saperstein head of Upa.
Awesome review, glad you did this movie.
My fav monster movie when I was a kid. We need an updated film of this! With today's tech, it would look amazing

15:00 Getting an Attack On Titan vibe from this scene.
BOO! You skipped the best part that this was the monster that ate people and spit it the clothes. This is an unforgivable sin on your part.
♫The clothes got stuck in his throat♫
When I watched this as a kid, I couldn't get over that they spit out the clothes. It was like the defining feature of this film.
thats cuz the poster is a fucking asshole
That only occurs in the English language version, so Brandon probably thought it wasn't relevant.

Ever since I watched your review of King Kong Escapes, I was wondering when you would get to reviewing this.
Brandon, if you haven't already...watch BIG MAN JAPAN.
This isn't a review request, simply a recommendation.

Zachary Tricoski He probably has seen it, he showed a clip when mentioning that he is almost all out of famous japanese kaiku
Biggest American star at Toho was Russ Tamblyn. "Must have been on a ... bad LSD trip"
I think I just realized that the Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated episode “Battle of the Humungonauts" was inspired by this movie.I recently watched the episode and the scene at the beginning had a woman singing terribly, which was very similar to 8:36
This was Toho's best monster film, hands down.

*3:53* brandon you fool you could have done the best joke with that name
That guy with stewert: beam aboard number one
My best friend and I had the fight choreography memorized and would routinely re enact our favorite scenes.
As much as I enjoy War of the Gargantuas and Ishiro Honda's work, that singing part never ceases to give me a headache. I'll slog through Godzilla's Revenge 10 more times before I'll suffer through that again.
Real talk: Honda wasn't a fan of this film and found it "dull", but was glad others enjoyed it. And "Godzilla's Revenge" was one of his favorite Godzilla movies.
@ConstantineFurman The one that's "Kenny having schizo psychosis and Minilla" is his favorite?
6:18 or it could have been a Titanosaurus
You know what?
I want ONE moment in a monster film where the giant beast comes walking into the city and the moment he steps on a car he reacts as if he stepped on a LEGO.
That volcano appeared and killed both Sandra & Gaira at the end of the movie was so unexpected that someone joked that it was Godzilla who told the Gargantuans to shut up while having a long beauty sleep. 😆😂
Those are the macer tanks from some of the Godzilla movies.
This is the first film to have maser tanks
This is awesome. I remember seeing this for the first time when Space was running all these Toho flicks to capitalize on the release of the 1998 American Godzilla. It was one of those times that sticking home and watching TV was the better option
Fun fact: in newer releases of this movie, they redubbed Russ Tamblyn's voice with somebody else's.
9:34. Thanks for that playing that song, "words get stuck in my throat,". Now that song is stuck in my head!! (Insert booing crowd noise)
This is why you don't go to Japan in the 60's and make Kaiju flicks. Kipp Hamilton was a semi-well known actress/model/singer during that era with a fair number of screen, TV credits, and a nightclub act. And what will she go down in cinematic history for? the defining moment of her career.? Singing "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat" and being slammed by a Gargantua. (Actually one of the greatest scenes in Kaiju cinema IMO.)
Back in the day 80s, on Saturday creature double feature use to have this on it was one of my favorite movies . Good to see this again it's been over 25yrs since I saw this movie but after this going to find it and watch it, thank u and great job Brandon

you are very much a breath of fresh air in theses times...watched your older and newest videos.

This one has always been a sentimental favorite of mine. WFAA would have "Monsters versus the World" week on their 3PM movie back in the seventies, and War of the Gargantuas, Monster Zero and King Kong Escapes were usually in the lineup. Good times.
I'm from DFW as well. I remember when Dialing For Dollars would have 'Monster Week'. We didn't get out of school until 3:15, and I had to rush home to see most of the movie.
Let's not forget Kung Fu Movies in the summertime and Icky Twerp in the morning
This would have been back in 1973, because I can remember being terribly upset when the monster movies were preempted by the Watergate hearings.
The words get stuck in her throat but that song got stuck in my head , thanks Brandon...
Green Gargantua’s running style brought me actual happiness.
YEEEEEWS , WE FINALY GOT HERE
I was expecting a Kong: Skull Island joke with the octopus (which Kong eats)
"Huh. When I signed on to be a fisherman, I did not expect to see this."
