  • In this video, we replace our AIS receiver with an AIS Transponder from Em-Trak. We went for the B923 model which features an inbuilt antenna splitter and it outputs AIS information on the NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks.
They also sell other units that support WiFi and 5w output for off-shore sailing. The unit is IPx6 & IPx7 rated, features very low power consumption, has the option to not transmit your position and has a quick install bracket.

How is the GPS reception of built in GPS antenna? Are there any GPS accuracy values shown in this configuration app? You don't want you're boat position to have an accuracy of a few hundred meters; a situation we all see with our mobile phones regularly when inside somewhere.

Hi, there is information in the ProAIS on the GNSS status tab to give you an idea on gps performance. The diagnostic page will tell you if everything is ok and it’s in a suitable location with the checklist but you can dig into the detail more on that other page. At the moment my unit can see 32 satellites and it’s using 24 of them. I have a minimum of 12 between 30-40dBHz which is considered a good signal. The main issue in buildings is metal, virtually all insulation is foil back and glass is getting thinker, it just creates a faraday cage. The manual gives you some ideas of where to locate it and you can always test it before fixing it. Hope that helps

@@BoatingwiththeBaileys Thanks for sharing these performance details. Sounds like reception is pretty good. Of course this device has more power for reception and space (for antenna) than a mobile device.

@cornelisvanderbent8569 yeah, the position info is as good as my outside gps from what I can see. You can always get the external antenna if it won’t get a good fix.

You raise a good point about cost. Need some time to answer the investment part. If it lasts 10+ years then maybe so. There are cheaper units, some don’t have both in-built splitters and GPS and more specifically ones that when they fail still allow the VHF to transmit without unplugging or changing cables.

@@BoatingwiththeBaileys yes I like the features and the quality construction, the AIS is a piece I did not want to skip on (even if the Moitessier hat was tempting)
Just watching your KIP 2.4.1 at the moment and I am wondering. Are you running all that stuff on a Pi5 now? Just received mine last weekend and trying to load up navigation SW on it. I got Open CPN so that is a start... 🙂

@Coyotehello for the video I did record that on the Pi5 using some test data. I’ve built my Pi5 as far as I can but the apps for 1-wire, I2c and a few other things aren’t quite where they need to be yet. I’ve also ordered an SSD and a hat so just waiting to get them. I am planning on doing some testing with it and then I might switch across.
