This week we brag about our new Cortex System by Vesper! This sweet little unit will help us do all the things:
VHF Radio
GPS Location
AIS Transmitting and Receiving
Man Over Board
Anchor Watch (Dragging Alarm)
NEMA2000 over WiFi
Remote Monitoring
Direct Boat to Boat Communications
...What doesn't it do?!
Cheers!

Thanks guys..
Thanks Trev!
I put my hand over my eyes when Chris was drilling the hole 🙈
So was his mom, and my mom, and like 3 other people including your mom 😊
Hey Drifters, Just wanted to say my partner and i absolutely love your channel. Please PLEASE please keep up the great work. Love from australia
Thank you both!! That means a lot ❤️Crazy to think people are watching our little dream take shape from so far away!
I did think Chris looked a bit like Errol Flynn up there for a bit. But he did not have on tights. Next week he can do his Captain Blood imitation. Also radio now works so you can call the bridges. Things are looking up.
Purchasing tights from Amazon immediately.
@@ChrisandKellNowHere great, next time he can do his best Errol Flynn doing Robinhood imitation
thanks for the video, you guys do a great job on both the boat and the channel
Thank you!! We’re excited to show you what’s next, the galley is finally taking form!
You guy's just crack me up, thanks for the laughs on a sunday morning. Cheers
We’ll keep dishing it up!!
Great episode guys thank you, that looks like a really good system of communications having multiple items all in one unit, best of luck to you, keep the build coming guys your doing great, Al
Thanks Al! Can’t wait to actually put it to use. There are soo many features - this unit definitely gives us piece of mind in so many levels.
Hey great video. Just subscribed because you two keep it surreal, important for sanity in what you have going there. I'll be ordering the Cortex soon for my boat. Couple of questions: You appear to be configuring the AIS position etc from the set up mode. Didn't your dealer have you fill out form for them to program the AIS static data? Also, with the hub installed where it is, are you concerned about antenna interference from any ferrous metals in that space such as AC/DC terminal mounts? just curious.
After several months of use it seems to be working pretty great. Plus we're in contact with some of the guys that designed it, and they said you can tuck it in just about anywhere especially if you have the external GPS antenna. Typically yes, your dealer would configure the AIS, but we had to do it through email because we bought it directly from the guys in New Zealand at the time. Since Garmin took over it's a little bit more approachable.
Great investment, nice solid system 👍
We're very pleased with the fit and finish quality
I'm currently watching this video, and texting Henry as he finishes his first solo overnight passage... I wish Henry had AIS on his new boat so I could see where he is now!
We’ve been in touch pretty much his entire trip! Very impressed with just having cell service.
Hi Chris & Kel, love your channel
Did you use the Cortex to tie in your older NMEA 0183 devices.
I have the same Vesper, a new Raymarine Axiom NMEA 2000 MFD, but my Wind/Depth/Speed is the old RM SeaTalk-1 vintage.
I know I can purchase Raymarine ST to STNG converter, but if Vesper can save be the $160CAN, why not.
Thanks Craig
We don't, but if I did have the 0183, I would totally use it for that purpose. We have our nema 2000 wind and depth sounder connected to the vesper, and then it broadcasts it to our devices. Works great! And it's supposed to do the same for 0183
are u happy with the system? i just bought one have not installed yet
Glad you asked… we’re having some trouble with it at the moment 🫣
False alarms?
Any update on this radio after a year? I've had mine for 2 years. I can't decide if it is staying or going.
I love it in general. Every once in a while it needs a reset and I could never calibrate it's internal heading correctly, but I use it for wind and depth and GPS... And if course AIS
Got my GPS antenna back up after a solar arch install. I am leaving in 3 weeks(ish) and will probably get another wired handset before going offshore. Other than that, I like the tech!@@ChrisandKellNowHere I heard but have not confirmed that the wired handset also has a battery that will work when unplugged. I have to test that.
Using a level/plumb on a boat never works for me. My boat has no surface to check to see if the boat itself is perfectly level.
We tried using the water line to level it… not a good idea as the previous owner repainted it 😳 didn’t write “line up” if you catch my drift
I was sure you were going to drill your hand
And for his next trick…. Lol
NMEA2000 is the standard for most marine electronics. EXCEPT FOR RAYMARINE. their systems don't communicate with Garmin B&G Simrad Furno lowrance ETC.. Raymarine think they are special, in which case their equipmentis mediocre at best. That's why I won't recommend to customers or buy it or install it..
