    BTW, some cellular iPads have really bad GPS, including my first gen iPad pro 12 inch. Location services seems to randomly pause or appear in the wrong location, side by side with an iPhone that has no problems whatsoever. Thanks for this!

      So far so good! I like seeing the AIS on my navionics and keep it on all the time. It doesn’t clutter the screen.
      The one thing i do like about the original Raymarine is the overlay of AIS on my radar targets which i like at night.
      I often have the Raymarine MFD display radar with AIS on main screen and depth on top ribbon status bar.

    Hello Mike! Thank you for the video. I have a couple questions: Can you share with me the importance of the glomex splitter? Are you aware of any alternatives? I am in Europe and this piece is a bit expensive and difficult to source. Are you at all familiar with the Yakker? I'm working with a wifi only ipad. Thanks!

    • @eandmstern
      @eandmstern  Před rokem +1

      The splitter is directly proportional to the signal strength so it will reduce signal strength by 3db or 1/2 if you don’t find an active splitter, which would affect range.
      You can try initially without and add one if not adequate. Your vhf radio range strength will also decrease.
      I’ve not researched other active splitters but should not be too hard to find.
      Good luck

    • @ratusbagus
      @ratusbagus Před rokem

      Or you could have dedicated antennae and no splitter that can break taking out both your ais and VHF ..... also extra redundancy because you have 2 Arials ...and of course no signal strength reduction.

  • @rhoadesurf
    @rhoadesurf Před 3 lety +1

    • @eandmstern
      @eandmstern  Před 3 lety +3

      Hello Brian, No you do not need a VHF with AIS. The Quark box takes the VHF signal (the same one you're feeding your VHF) via an active antenna splitter. That signal is then processed by the quark box. Since your tablet already has the GPS built-in, you can forego adding the GPS antenna that I did. -Mike

    G'day Mike, what own vessel information does your system display? I plan on duplicating your system for my Regulator 32. My Northstar 6000i LCD gave out and I need an alternative. I intend to use Seaiq software and all of the Northstar peripherals are functioning well, I just cant see them through the LCD.

    • @eandmstern
      @eandmstern  Před 2 lety +1

      There is no AIS information on my own vessel if that is the question since I’m only receiving.
      Navionics does show your own vessel on the chart like a normal chart plotter so you can see the other AIS targets relative to your position. Maybe I’m not understanding the question.

    Hi Mike! Me again. I finally got to my boat and discovered that it already has a splitter and that sends data to the CTRX transponder which send data to the vesper marine watchmate. Is there a way to ty this into the system without losing the transponder?

    • @eandmstern
      @eandmstern  Před rokem

      I don't know the answer to this question. However I would think there is a way by using the NMEA connections to the quark box. You should reach out to Quark or device manufacturers that make similar items.

      @@eandmstern Just for anybody else looking, I contacted Quark Electric and they help me solve this. Used the NMEA connections, however I needed to download their software to alter the input baudrate from 4800 to 38,400. Boom now I have a transponder wired into this same setup. They have other cheap products without the AIS receiver which is now redundant but I appreciate having it as a backup if needed.
