  • A student asked me how to finish a bell sleeve with a deep slit in the middle of the sleeve:
    • Should the hem be turned up and then the split sleeve seam allowance turned over on top?
    Or the other way around:
    • Should the split sleeve seam allowance be turned over and then the hem turned up on top?
Rather than either of these two options, I suggested making a mitered corner, because it would reduce the bulk, and it would look prettier if the split sleeve hung open over her arm.
This video shows how I make a miter when the adjoining seam / hem allowances are not the same width. (Of course, it works for even miters, too.) Not only is it really easy, but you can also check it before you do the trimming, so you know that it's going to work out.

Thanks for the tip about the bamboo point turner. Must get one to replace my plastic one. Great detailed explanation. Always helps to know why you do the things you do.

Thanks for stressing the importance of clipping the corner. I keep forgetting to do that and my corners are not as precise as they could be. Another Sarah tip I will add to my sewing!

Please get a glass of water whilst you’re recording or do some editing because this was truly painful to follow 😱😭
