  • Anthony is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne, encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony's grip on reality is unravelling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her? THE FATHER warmly embraces real life, through loving reflection upon the vibrant human condition; heart-breaking and uncompromisingly poignant - a movie that nestles in the truth of our own lives.

That hits close to home. I looked after my mother and father when they declined with dementia. My mother was an angelic but forgetful saint, my father was paranoid and hostile. He had always had control in his life and saw every bit of it slipping away. As hard as it was to cope with him, it made me a better person. For the first time in my life, I had to love another person unconditionally, with no emotional reward.

This film is less of a story and more of an experience that attempts to put the viewer in the place of someone suffering from dementia. I know a lot of people don't like how it's often difficult to understand what's happening in the movie, but I personally loved that because not knowing reality from mental fabrications made me truly feel like I myself had dementia while watching the film. It was subtly and naturally sublime, from his quiet gestures to his facial expressions to the mannerisms to the sadness and confusion that seem to be embedded in his eyes. Do you have experience with this? It´s extremely exhausting. I looked after my bedridden Dad with dementia for 3 years and I don´t think I could have managed for much longer. It´s been 6 months now and I still feel so damn tired. I quit my job, asked for government support to look after him, it was morning till evening every day for 3 years. He was anxious so he wanted somebody to be with him all the time. When he was in hospital I had a few days "off" to look after my own stuff and recharge. In those 3 years about 3 weeks altogether. You still need to visit him in hospital, though. As much as possible. Because he doesn´t eat much there. And is scared and you don´t want to leave him there. Your body is so exhausted that you can´t even sleep well...

It's hard to put into words how extraordinary this film is and how remarkable Anthony Hopkins is in it. It's a work of genius that is almost operatic from humor, to drama, to pain, to horror and finally to tears. That last scene alone I was watching with my Mom and literally gasping and sobbing the whole time and it lingered with me for several days afterwards. I'm so happy that the Academy actually got this right and gave Hopkins a much overdue 2nd Oscar.

      The Nicene Creed says,
“God from God, Light from Light,
      true God from true God,
      begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.”
      Let’s make it clear.
The direct and literal meaning of “God from God” is: God proceeds from God.
That is, God created Himself, because He proceeds from God.
He proceeds from God, but is God too.
Doesn’t it mean that God is from God?
That is, God created Himself, which is definitely a wrong interpretation.
There must be a profound meaning in this verse, rather than just what it says.
      What it really means is:
At a certain point many lifetimes ago, the Christ was begotten of the Father - that is, “God from God”.
Through practice in many lifetimes, He has eradicated all sins and sinful nature, fully restored divinity and spirituality, and become one with God. So He is God.

I loved this movie. I believe that if you know someone going through this, you should watch it.
Just like many who may have shared this experience in real life, this movie (and the ending scene, particularly) left me emotionally devastated. I'm not even sure if watching this movie was a cathartic experience, or just a reliving of the emotional trauma me and my mother went through while taking care of our beloved grandmother.
I truly wish this movie would have come out back in 2017, when things were at their worst for us, so that I could have better sympathized with her state. We went through everything the movie has shown, and Hopkins' portrayal of the disease is uncanny. He deserves recognition for it.
But nominations and acting aside, I hope this opens up more dialogue involving dementia to the public, because it is as terrible as it seems, and everyone going through this can use as much sympathy and help as they can.

I have watched this movie three times now, because of the tremendous performance by Anthony Hopkins and the supporting cast, it rings so true and believable, I went through this personally with my mother after she turned 88 years old, and she got progressively worse until she passed away at 91 years old.
It was an ordeal to go through, my sister wanted to put her in a nursing home, and I resisted and tried to look after her together with some part-time home care, but it became too difficult and stressful as I was still working full time as well.
The day I gave in and agreed to put her in the nursing home, was one of the worst days of my life, my mother was crying as she didn't want to leave her home of over 45 years, and my wife and I had to carry her to the car to drive her there, that day still haunts me and brings tears to my eyes when I think about it.
My wife and I both agree that we don't want to go in a nursing home ever, but as I have never had children of my own, I don't expect much support in my old age, so who knows I may have no choice in the end, I just hope that I can avoid dementia and hopefully pass away in my sleep. Nobody knows what life has in store for them and maybe that is a good thing!

There is no sentimentality in 'The Father,' the man in question can be difficult and infuriating as well as kind and loving, but that's the nature of the disease, and it makes the film even more heart wrenching. My mother died of Alzheimer's 5 years ago and watching 'The Father' brought back all the despair and confusion and grief of that time. At one point I had to go outside and have a cry because it was so real. I can't emphasise enough how brilliant Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman are in this film of 'The Father.' Just finished watching the TIFF premiere online. Both Hopkins and Colman are locks for Oscar nominations this year, with Hopkins having a very strong shot at even winning for Best Actor. They adapted the play and characters for the screen very well and utilized the set in such cinematic ways to help tell the story from the perspective of an old man battling dementia and just struggling to hold onto who he is. I saw Frank Langella perform the role on Broadway (who also won the Tony) many years ago and he was excellent. That final scene in the movie, just WOW! What an acting showcase for Sir Anthony Hopkins. His performance is simply devastating and heartbreaking that he made me tear up a few times . I won't spoil it for folks but do go watch the movie when it's released later this year in December.

now she is going thru Dementia and this movie really hit home for me. If
we are lucky, we will live to a nice old age, but, seeing my mom go
through this, makes me so sad. I am not being mean, it
is just "she" can't remember me now and "I" am starting to forget how
vibrant and happy she once was. Prayers up to anyone going through Dementia and

My brother recommended this movie. Not knowing much about it I pressed play. Blown the eff away!! Might be one of the best performances I've ever seen. The movie was incredible as well. They way the director REALLY puts u in the shoes of the character. I've seen this movie 3 times in the last 3 days.
Last time I was blown away by a performance was Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Bastards.
The quickness of his reactions and delivery are nothing short of masterful.
One of the very few actors that can combine Art and realism into one.
And to think I held off on this movie bcuz I thought eh. Lol

Went to watch in a theatre in Antwerp, Belgium last Sunday, because a dear friend of 90 has been diagnosed with dementia. It was the matinee screening at 10 am : only four people were there ( Covid-rules had just eased a bit). After the movie all four people, sitting well apart from each other, remained seated, speechless, for +/- 10-15 minutes... A thump in the stomach! A wake-up call : this will be reality for all of us. I am thankfull I live in Belgium where I can choose when my life will end...

When my father reached his 95th birthday, sharp as a tack, I thought I was home free. Wrong -a few months later, things went wrong . He went from telling me he was a little worried because he was confused, about his medication, to a few weeks later, not knowing who I was, to five months later, dying, because his brain no longer knew how to eat or drink.

A heartbreaking performance by Hopkins. A superb cast, with Coleman's poignant portrayal of a loving daughter a standout. Zeller basically gaslights the viewer by switching colours and objects to create a feeling of unease. Brilliant!
