Good video brother. I also bought my truck from Lone Mountain. I was a third time buyer and went there because I got in an accident and totaled my paid for KW. And at that time my credit was in the crapper it worked out well for me. Truck had 450k miles on it. 2011 Prostar. Took it to Rawze and turned it. I got 430k miles before I had to do an inframe on it. So I was ok with that. The problem with these trucks is that they were trucks from major fleets that don’t maintain them like they should have and they were used and abused by company drivers who don’t give a crap about the truck. So people need to do exactly what you did to come out ok. Little at a time we have totally rebuilt this truck. We are luckier then most because we can do all the work our selves and have our own shop at home your doing it right little brother. Oh. Banked $10300 this week 😎👊stepping out with the step deck

Well before ya buy it: run a rigdig reoort. If it was owned by a shit company dont buy it. Tons of out of service violations, probably wasnt maintained well. Wrecked, dont buy it.
Tell them to Run an ecm report. Tons of parked re-gens, dont buy it.
Pull an oil sample, they prolly changed it when they got the truck in tho.

Great video. Worth the wait. All of the trucks I have bought with DPF and EGRs I have deleted that system and automatically get 1.5 MPG better than before. The engine is quieter and breaths better.
Not all can do it because you still have California as an option. My trucks are for the most part TX, LA, middle America and anything east of the Big Muddy. Therefore I can get away with it.
This video has a vast amount of knowledge and I recomend it to anyone getting a truck.

Lots of Lone mtn trucks come from Western Express. Western doesn't report accidents if they don't legally have to. They tow wrecked trucks to their terminal in Nashville. Where they have mechanics and a body shop to make them look okay enough to ship out to lone mtn a 100 at a time.

The thing that saved him was a bumper to bumper warranty. And the fact he didn't blow all his money on the truck itself. So you have $40000.
Spend 1/2 and keep the other 1/2 for when you break down. Cause you will breakdown. To combat that have an excellent preventative maintenance plan in place.

Class A Prepper it “can” happen but it’s highly unlikely. Most of the open decks are built with dump valves to avoid that. My truck wasn’t set up for a dump valve so the entire time I ran that flat, nothing happened. When it’s spread, yes it’s nice to have but not imperative. It’s more to save the tires than anything.

My second week out I got a fuel pump code and the truck was threatening to de rate. Took it to the Cummins and it ended up being a air leak in the fuel filter due to loves not installing it correctly when they did the PM but they did find that the ceramic tappets were wearing so we went ahead and put that new $6000 fuel pump in. Their website says 15k down and $2650 monthly payment. For a new truck that, like you said, isn’t experiencing old outdated DPF systems when they were first invented, I think it sounds like a pretty good deal. If you’re with the right company and you can work hard, if you gross 6k a week and take home 3k a week, you should be able to swing that payment easy imo.
I have 790 credit, 50k cash, no wife/kids. I’ve thought about taking a chance and buying a truck etc., but the company I’m currently with, I gross 2k-2.5k as a company driver weekly. So I sort of feel like why quit a good paying job, you know what I mean?

You're right when you say buying from an owner-operator is a better bet for sure, but there's an exception to every rule. Typically, an owner-operator truck is going to be better spec'ed with a lot more options then a former fleet truck. Large carriers spec a truck to do a specific job, as cost effectively as possible, without all the frills. They don't need a full gauge package because, honestly, the driver driving the truck is going to have less experience in the industry, and probably not going to know what that gauge is saying anyway. The driver is hired to drive. A competent owner-operator wants to know what's going on with his equipment at all times, because that truck is his lively hood!
O.k not to mention the cool factor ie: Straight pipes, and chicken lights are cool!

I don't like the horror stories. I've seen many people lose everything over a bad decision over the years. I've been an owner operator for 20 years and a fleet driver for 6 years before that. I was fortunate in that I grew up in a trucking family, so, I knew what to look for, how to spec a tractor and how to do basic maintenance. Those are the 3 biggest things, beside having enough available cash or credit, to be successful. I'm not saying that I can tear down and rebuild an engine on the side of the road, because I'm not "Super Trucker". I'm just saying know what you're looking at, and, if you don't, know someone that you trust who does. I watched a series of videos where a guy bought a used truck and was pretty much dumbfounded why it wouldn't track straight, and, ate up tires. I could see from the first few seconds of the first video that the truck had been wrecked, and, not properly repaired. It turned out that the frame was bent (which I could see right away), along with several other issues. As the old saying goes, buyer beware.

Get a 60 Series Detroit, good power, even better fuel economy, and it will still be clattering away long after the apocalypse.

    • @MikeBrown-ii3pt
      @MikeBrown-ii3pt Před 4 lety

Out of all the tractors I've driven/owned, only 1 had Detroit power. It was a 60 series 12.7L in a 2001 Freightliner FLD12064. It was a good engine and very fuel efficient, but, it just seemed like the torque came in at higher rpm than the Cummins engines that I was used to. I actually tested it against my Cummins powered 95 FLD, which I'd put a driver in. The 95 had a Cummins M-11 Celect plus @ 370 hp 1850tq. The 01 had the 12.7 @ 500 hp 1850tq. Otherwise, the trucks were identical-Super 10 trans, 3.73 ratio, pulling loads from the same place that were within a few hundred pounds of each other. That little Cummins, with over 600k miles on it, would out pull the bigger Detroit every time. I'm not saying Detroits are bad, the Detroit definitely got better fuel mileage, I just prefer Cummins to this day.

What you said is absolutely right.... The trucks around 400,000 were only taken in for warranty work or a breakdown problem and everything is due....that's why they traded it back. Price out that new DPF. 2012-13 were the worst.

Great informational video my man!!, I picked up a brand new 2016 579 Pete from the dealership to take it 545 miles bobtail to the company yard to get outfitted. Made it just over 300 miles and the transmission locked up on me wrecking the motor and scaring the holy living crap out of me as the rear end locked up also. There are new lemons out there also, just learn how to sort thru the lemons to find the diamonds. (And yes the dealership made good on the issue) stay safe everybody!
