  • The SEC is expanding with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma. On Late Kick Live Ep 480 Josh Pate ranked all 16 programs using a rolling 3-year blended set of criteria including on-field performance, talent acquisition, resource pool, and stability. With UGA and Alabama atop the SEC, how do the next tiers shake out? Has Brian Kelly gotten LSU fully back? Where do programs like Texas A&M and Auburn stack up? Could a turnaround be in the cards for Florida? If you've read the several comments as to why Ole Miss over the 3 year criteria should be #4 on your list, will you clearly explain why you refute those points? The most egregious problem is with OU, picked by others at or near the bottom half of the SEC.

@boblaymon5450 It's because he's become an aggy mouthpiece this past season and would have to rank them a couple spots lower if where the teams are trending is taken into account. He knows who butters his bread and won't do anything to upset that balance. Notice how his assessment of Texas was begrudging (listing every single team we lost to the past 3 years that he feels aren't good enough to beat Texas) in spite of ranking the Horns third? Must keep the aggy fanbase somewhat sated while at the same time keeping it real (for the most part) with the rankings😂

OM is also a school that will not spare spending newly acquired SEC money on football. They will be all in with football as that playing field starts to level with bigger programs. Will they equal TX, of course not but they will have enough and spend it more wisely. All the SEC schools are about to have enough money to get anything done, Schools like OM will now have a fighting chance that they have not had in the past. I'm a G5 fan so I'm looking at it from the extreme other side but I can see where this is headed. There are going to be some schools that in years past in the BIG and SEC that were behind their peers with money but that's about to change. Pates criteria is a three year snapshot- so the last 20 years don't matter. Only the last three. Over these last three years both Ole Miss and TN have shown massive improvement to becoming heavyweights in CFB. I think Oklahoma still has the larger football brand and recruit appeal, but TN and Ole Miss are coming close and I believe their performances have been more impressive. OU got the benefit of a weaker conference, but has an about equal W/L(and the only sub .500 season record of these teams). OU I think has more questions to answer and work to do after Lincoln Riley left- that destabilizes a program. As far as resources, I believe the order goes TN>OU>Ole Miss but all three can flex their financial muscles if need be. Also, for Oklahoma's recent success- their most recent Natty is only two more years more recent than UT's most recent lol.

Well Josh I don't follow the SEC, but I follow college football enough to know that I'm concerned about the stock everyone, including you, put into conferences. I do however put stock into individual teams and what they achieve. Now I say that to say, the 2 are unrelated no matter the conference. If you want stats to follow that... look at unrelated media biases. Look at bowl records, look at head to head out of conference. Look at situations into those past head to heads out of conference.
We all know that Texas A&M has the same type of reliability of recruiting in expectations VS reality that Notre Dame does. Meaning that 4 and 5 star is closer to a bust than the typical OSU, Georgia, or Clemson(indiscriminately) recruitment goes.
There's more "money ball" type things that can be said towards all of CFB than anyone wants to uncover, buuuuutttt I digress.
Or else it would reflect in the draft outside of Alabama, LSU, and recently Georgia (kinda)
However, I just wish there would be more genuine takes on this matter, as good as the SEC is. I just think there's just padded stats more than what you would like to admit when it comes to dealing with conference VS dealing with individual teams and let the facts lay where they may. No matter the conference affiliation.

@@LateKickwithJoshPate First, big fan of the program. Watch every show, liked, subscribed and got my family and friends to like and subscribe.
My evidence. Two of your four criteria are in my opinion subjective, "Resource pool" and "program stability". If resources were so important, the NY Mets would be winning and Texas would be the dominant team in CFB. Neither are true. As far as program stability, each team I've listed above Texas has had their head coach for at least two years, and unless scandal or complete disaster occur, those coaches will likely be there another two years. It's subjective because there's no metric to measure "stability" other than winning. So I included 3 pieces of evidence for each team. Win-loss record, average 3 year recruiting, average portal class.
      1. Georgia (42-2, 3 and N/A)
      2. Bama (36-6, 1.3 and N/A)
      3. Ole Miss (29-10, 22.3 and 2)
      4. Tenn (27-12, 16.3 and 41.5)
      5. OU (27-12, 7.6 and 6)
      6. LSU (26-14, 7 and 4)
      7. Texas (25-14, 7.6 and 50.5)
It must be taken into consideration that OU and Texas have played full Big 12 schedules whiles these other schools have played full SEC schedules. In 2023 Texas played 5 conference games where their opponents defense ranked below 100th, while the SEC schools played 1 or 2 (one being LSU who had a Heisman QB and the other Vandy). So Texas over a 3 year production stand point barley breaks into the top 8 and has had a far more forgiving schedule than the other teams who have had to play an eventual national champion at least once each season.
      - I would love to add that God has given you an incredible gift and you use it so well. God bless 🙏🏽
