  • Sailing Our #Seawind1600Catamaran from Ft. Lauderdale to Biscayne Bay | #HarborsUnknown Ep. 6
This week we sail from Ft. Lauderdale to Biscayne Bay, spend some time exploring Key Biscayne, Biscayne Bay and Elliott Key, then sail back to Ft. Lauderdale.
We departed later than we had intended and with winds forecast at 20 knots we knew it was going to be an interesting sail. It was going to be our longest sail to date on our new #Seawind1600 #catamaran, Wanderlust. It was a great opportunity to assess her performance.
We stopped for fuel at the Ft. Lauderdale Marina since we hadn’t fueled up since we received the boat and we were going to be away for a week. There are two 100 gallon tanks on board so we filled each to about 70 gallons.
Once we were out of the Port Everglades channel, we pulled up the sails and were off on a beautiful sunset sail. The wind was about 20 knots from the north, just about straight behind us. This caused some pretty rolly seas as the wind hit the current of the Gulf Stream. We decided to put a reef in the mainsail from the start to be safe. The boat speed was a comfortable 10 knots.
As day faded into night the winds picked up, gusting to 28 knots. We had put a second reef in the main and our speed slowed a bit. It wasn’t long before the multicolored lights of the Miami skyline greeted us and we were able to anchor just outside of No Name Harbor.
The next morning, the first order of business was to take Yoda to shore so she could stretch her legs and go potty. Later that day we had a few friends on board to celebrate my birthday. It had been a while since we’d seen them all due to quarantine so It was so especially nice to see everyone. We are so lucky to live in a place where you can create your own oasis with people you trust. We went for a beautiful day sail on Biscayne Bay. The winds reached 20 knots even in the bay and we cruised at 10 knots.
With the #Miami skyline in the distance, aquamarine water, wind and sun we were in paradise.
With the daggerboards and rudders up the Seawind 1600 draws just 2’1” but there are quite a few shallow spots so Fabio kept a close eye on the charts and the water.
The next morning we dinghied into Bill Baggs State Park to take Yoda for a walk and I went for a run. The anchorage inside is called No Name Harbor and offers a bit more protection but we prefer to have more space and privacy outside. We pulled up to the sea wall beside The Grill restaurant and hopped out of the dinghy. The park was a hub of outdoor activity, with people walking, jogging, biking, and fishing. All at a safe distance.
While on my run I came across the Cape Florida Lighthouse. Constructed in 1825, at 65 feet high, it guided mariners off the Florida Reef, which starts near Key Biscayne and extends southward a few miles offshore of the Keys. In 1836 during the Second Seminole War it was badly damaged but was rebuilt in 1846 and now stands at 95 feet.
Our friends Ashley and Steve arrived so we sailed over to Elliott Key and hopped into the dinghy in search of snorkeling spots. We should have done our homework because we couldn’t find anything except for grass. A few years back we went to Elliott Key with a friend who knows the area and there were a ton of coral heads and on a separate occasion caught a whole mess of lobster. Not this time.
The sunset on our last night was absolutely spectacular. The perfect finish to a wonderful week.
In the morning we hoisted the main while still on anchor and set off towards Ft. Lauderdale. We motor sailed past the Cape Florida Lighthouse and Stiltsville. Once out of the channel we unfurled the gennaker and turned off the engine. Unfortunately squalls and unpredictable winds in the high twenties kept us busy so we didn’t film the rest of the sail.
Thanks for joining us this week, give the video a thumbs up, subscribe, ding the bell for notifications and if you have a friend who might enjoy it, we’d love it if you’d share it with them.
Special thanks to Mark McGreevy for capturing some awesome footage of us!

Great video! Fabio whats your work background if you don't mind me asking. I'm thinking you must of been a chef! Also just a little note. I watch a lot cruisers and the 2 things they talk about keeping their watermarker working good is: Always pickle your system after use and don't ever make water anywhere near marinas or shallow water the debris will plug up your filters real fast!

Wow what a great boat. Very jealous!!!! I think you're the first channel ive seen with the 1600. Im only 33 so still have 10 or so years till I retire but can't help researching on what I'd want to get. I dont want a big condo cat, so a seawind or a Balance is what I've been looking at. Nice job editing as well.

Hello Kristine and Fabio. Found your channel this week and love it. You guys did a wonderful job. Hopping Fabio recovered well. What a small world we lived in, I talked to Captain Bruce this morning about our sailing lessons in December and It was Bruce that did the commissioning on your boat. I am getting a new Leopard 45 in early December in Fort Lauderdale. Would love to say hello and have a glass of wine with you guys.

Cool video!.Great first few days of your new "normal" lifestyle! Great to see you prefare living at anchor, much better than the dock, noisy neighbours, hot, wind always coming from the direction, ect. I lived onbord for 8 years and spent 1 month on the dock. I used to skipper big cats for a living in the carrib, as such I think your boat is one of the best on the market, Yoda led you wisely! Have a great time, waiting for the next vid,

I was wondering whether the sails on the 1600 where standard or made to your own requirement. Thankyou for sharing your experiences

    • @HarborsUnknown

Hi David! We went with standard Dacron but you can choose laminate sails and customize the sail plan to your needs.

@@HarborsUnknown If you have the need to upgrade the sails this material was recommended by sail makers in Australia as a stage up from the standard Dacron for cruising cats. The fabric is called Contender Sailcloth CDX Cruising Laminate
CDX Pro 11 cool grey for 46 to 50-foot vessels (mainsail and No.3) CDX pro9 for No.2
      .
USA woven made with ZigZag yarn technology enable you to have a sail made from radial panels that matches the modern rigging of your yacht. The yarns in ZigZag reinforced laminates are laid at angles such that the forces in the sail are distributed evenly over the radial panels.

Quick question, how many people can fit in the dinghy and is that the largest you can fit on the boat?

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  Před 3 lety +1

Hi! The dinghy is a Highfield CL340. It says the max people is 6+1 on the website and the max load is 1215 lb or 551 kg. We keep it at the back of the boat and there's about 2 feet of space on either end of the dinghy. I'm not sure if you could fit something much larger. It's 11'2" or 3.4m long.

A very important safety tip. Never get in the dinghy by yourself without a life jacket on and never ever get in a dingy without wearing the motor kill tether. You’ll see 90% of people doing it because 1 they saw the result or it happened to them already. The trip you showed you leaving your boat with the dog in a life jacket and you had nothing. Let me give you some life saving advise the sea is waiting for you to make a mistake. When it see’s your unprepared is when it will take full measure of revenge. In your case your dog would have run you over and kill you and the head line would read ‘’MAN KILLED BY HIS OWN DOG, HE RAN OVER HIS OWNER IN A RUN AWAY DINGY THE DOG LIVED BECAUSE HE WAS SMART AND HAD HIS LIFE JACKET ON’’

Haha! Epidemic Sound is a popular royalty free music source for CZcamsrs and it's actually pretty time consuming to find music we like. If we like a song we hear on another channel we look for it in Epidemic Sound. If you watch La Vagabonde you'll know they've been having trouble recently because they use music from independent artists with their permission but are getting flagged for copyright issues. They've even started using royalty free music. :)
