Sailing with the BEST DOWNWIND SAIL [FIRST TIME] on our Seawind 1600 Catamaran
Sailing around the world it’s best to have specific sails for different sailing conditions. We have struggled to sail deep downwind but today we’re launching our new winged spinnaker and it is proving to be an absolute game changer. Though, we can’t get too distracted by its beauty as we have to sail 50 nautical miles from Tahanea to Fakarava within daylight and unfortunately won’t be leaving or entering the passes at an ideal time. Join us to see how the day unfolds.

If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, SV Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. Exploring the world, connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how great food can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. Seeking to balance the desire to explore and travel to beautiful, remote locations while leaving no footprint, minimizing the Hawthorne effect of the observers who change the environment she or he observes.
We hope to inspire people and showcase the possibility of living an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment, all while keeping it real. Sharing the trials and tribulations of living off-grid, acknowledging the discomfort of detoxing from the modern world, finding pleasure in the subtleties of nature and joy in simplicity. Attempting to understand what makes the world tick and tock but also trying to gain a deeper comprehension of ourselves and identify what will satisfy that hunger for further exploration, for purpose. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world! Subscribe now to join our sailing adventure.

      Thank you Shawn, not necessarily, a lot of people just use a sheet and a guy ( tack) like you would for an asymmetrical spinnaker. We like to use 4 lines because in long passages you can jibe without dousing. The sail stays open without collapsing in low winds when surfing down a wave (where the spinnaker tends to deflate when the AWS is close to boat speed) Also it is more forgiving with gusts and sustained high winds.

    Good video. You make it look easy. Kristin's numbers 180° to 80° is really valuable information. These are great downwind sails. By the time we'd flown ours many many times, we were flying it day and night for multiple days at a time. The only nighttime problem we had was at the beginning of my midnight watch I stood in the center and checked to see if the bottom was level. It wasn't and it was luffing a bit. One of the starboard sheets was working loose on the winch. Easy to sort. I found it nearly impossible to judge the levelness of the bottom of the sail from anywhere but near dead center. We flew a Parasailor many many times last year going from Vietnam to Canada. I was never sure if there was any real difference with the two sheet Oxley, or if the 'box wing' was necessary. I probably just don't know enough. Your sail says Oxley and you have four sheets... What my best guess is, is that the vertical sheets keep the sail pulling more to the CE of the boat than if the only sheets were attached all the way at the back. I like that your sail has no tell tails. I never knew what they were supposed to indicate. Ours were in a line above and below the 'slot'. Sometimes they looked they they were about to point to the slot... but they never did. For the chaff points along the lifeline and the stanchions, we just put a couple of layers of duct tape. Moving the blocks is a better idea. To drop the sail, we eventually learned to keep the working sheet tight, loosen the lazy sheet. Then the sock slides down the working sheet. It seems pretty obvious.... now. Setting it up I figured out some ways to make it more efficient. We had a more vertical bag. Also we attached the clews in the bottom of the bag with Carabiners. This way it was always set up for deployment. (People should heed your 'keep the red line straight advice.) One change I really wanted to make was to make velcro'd flaps down where those clews clip in. Then I would be able to just push the sheets down into the bag attach them to the clews that I would be able to see through the flaps. Then the whole sail can be deployed right out of the bag. (We also attached the clews with dyneema soft shackles. When that stuff is flapping around like crazy, it's best not to have anything bulky or metal flying around. ) All spliced eyes in our four sheets had the core bulge out of the covers. Just seemed to be inadequate. I stuffed them back in and sewed them up. Worked, looked awful, and probably not the best solution. We just stowed all four sheets draped over the life lines and clipped at the front -- more carabiners. (Climbing carabiners are really handy on a boat. Spray the springs and pivots with dry lube. They get stiff in the salt, but with a little lube and exercising them, they return to working normally. ) But we were flying it every few days. One time one of our sheets was under the life line. The sail had a lot of force on it. Seemed an impossible situation. I just went forward with my spare rope. Cleated the end with some slack, reached up and carabiner'd it to the clew. Then I tightened it up on the cleat. Reached up and undid the soft shackle, took out the problem line. Sorted it back through the life lines. It was actually pretty easy. I always keep a couple of spare lines handy. We tried using the parasailor four times with the main sail up. The parasailor went nuts every time. After one of these episodes the other guys were busting my chops over some small thing. So I said, "Maybe our time would be better spent wondering why we've just tried flying our kite with main up when the last three times we did it, it also went nuts." One of the guys stopped and said, "We did?" (I hope whatever I didn't do correctly wasn't too serious -- because I can't remember what it was.) Our sail bag had these clever but fussy clips on top. Annoying. And to secure the bag to the trampoline there were ties. We quickly added carabiners. We always just parked it between the two trampolines, clipped on to the dyneema trampoline ties. No tying, just clipping. Maybe it's better being on one side of the deck. To keep lines from tangling so long as the ends are secure it almost doesn't matter what happens in the middle. I knew hauling in a flopping fish with 100 feet of monofilament piled up all around my feet, that if the hook was in the fish and the other end was still on my ring, so long as I never lifted my feet there would never be a tangle.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown Před 25 dny

      We do!!! The system was originally under designed by the engineering firm, Gurit. The system had been audited and redesigned. A warranty replacement was scheduled by Seawind but we did not have the chance to stay still in one place long enough to have the material and the shipwright meet us. The refit of the entire steering system has been now completed while in Raiatea and it’s a beauty. All the older Seawind 1600 are being refitted under warranty and the new ones are fitted with the new system from the factory. You don’t fined many boat builders who do that! Thanks for watching and for commenting 😊😊

    You buy a new car from a dealership, you don’t call Japan to warranty, or troubleshoot an O2 sensor
