SAILING the South Pacific WITH A DOG - Do We REGRET It?
Our French Bulldog Yoda spent 33 days at sea, sailing 4000 nm across the Pacific Ocean from Panama to French Polynesia with us. Turns out the passage was the easiest part of sailing the South Pacific with a dog. Five months of emailing, completing forms, seven vet visits and almost a thousand dollars was the preparation for Yoda to be inspected in French Polynesia. BUT we still weren’t certain she would be allowed into the country when we sailed away from Panama.

If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, SV Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. Exploring the world, connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how great food can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. Seeking to balance the desire to explore and travel to beautiful, remote locations while leaving no footprint, minimizing the Hawthorne effect of the observers who change the environment she or he observes.
We hope to inspire people and showcase the possibility of living an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment, all while keeping it real. Sharing the trials and tribulations of living off-grid, acknowledging the discomfort of detoxing from the modern world, finding pleasure in the subtleties of nature and joy in simplicity. Attempting to understand what makes the world tick and tock but also trying to gain a deeper comprehension of ourselves and identify what will satisfy that hunger for further exploration, for purpose. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world! Subscribe now to join our sailing adventure.

Space Station factoid was great
😊😊😊 makes you think right? 😊😊 thanks for watching
I appreciate that we only see the edited highlights, but Yoda always looks content and interacts with everything and everyone around her , so I guess she thinks it’s all worth it 😃🍻🥂
😂😂😂 she is having a grand time!! I would like to reincarnate in Yoda in my next life (Fabio)
Thanks for watching 😊😊🙏🙏
I had to chuckle, when I thought about the run around to get this important task accomplished.
Especially when remembering that everything is run through Papeete, regarding healthy and "clean" pets, which for decades was infamous for having the blackest/oiliest harbor water in the world.
How times change...
Thank you for sharing this, and great congratulations to Yoda for the patience and the eventual victory in being allowed to touch ground!
It was definitely a lot of running around to accomplish everything especially in the final month. We were quite surprised to see how many stray dogs and their condition after arriving. Yoda is one of the healthiest dogs by far. Thanks so much for watching and your support Leon!
Oh my goodness!!! Can Fabio not find a smaller mug on board??! I feel really sorry for Yoda that she hasn't been able to put a foot on land scratch that pour on land. It must've been very stressful for you to have to go through all those hoops just to be able to get her to a place where she can have a run on solid ground. Great to see that it's all turned out alright in the end, and that she is now cleared for one country at least. Hopefully that will mean that it's a whole lot easier having been cleared there, in that country, so hopefully other countries like Australia will accept her for more easily. Wow! what a smile on your face you had once she was cleared. I haven't seen all those teeth for a long time.
Thank you 😊!! That’s a BIG mug, definitely affecting weight and speed through the water 😂😂. Kristin says that we may have to raise our water line of antifouling just to account the the extra weight of the mug. 🤣
It’s been challenging to travel with Yoda but watching her run around after all that time on the boat has made JT all worth it.
Thank you for watching 😊😊
Must have been a huge relief to finally get Yoda through huge bureaucratic hurdles'. You are the first sailor's I'm aware of that have undertaken such an endeavour. Well done!
Thank you Mark, it was tough, others have done it but many are having trouble completing the check on process and end up keeping the pet on board for the entire stay in FP.
Thanks for watching and for your comment😊😊😊
I feel a sigh of relief along with you that Yoda was finally cleared to go ashore after crossing all the Ts and dotting all the I's on the paperwork drill. I am sure all were happy campers after finally getting Yoda's paws on some solid ground. It is understandable all of the rabies precautions that are in place, so, congratulations on this hurdle. I love your channel, you guys are most interesting. I especially like Fabio (Such a warm, pleasant and humle persona)with his accent as it reminds me of all of my Meditterranean travels while serving in the US Navy. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
Wow!! What a wonderful comment!! 😍 thank you so much for watching our videos, we really appreciate the time you take to watch and comment!
Way to go Yoda! The sweetie is happy
Yes!! Thank you 😊😊😊
Thanks for sharing your experience. We own and operate an animal clinic here in Texas. This is very common for us to prepare all the documents and vet the animals before departure. We also assist in flight management for larger dogs. It can be stressful. Super glad to see Yoda all vetted and running wild in the Marquis islands..
Thank you for watching and for your comment! She is happy and wild 😊. Can you attach your website so that interested people can find you when preparing for the passage? 😊😊
Saw U on Gone with the Wynns & thought I'd check out your channel. Thanks 4 sharing this process with us! Safe travels ❤
Thank you so much!! We really appreciate the time you took to watch and comment! 😊
Big congratulations for Yoda !!
She understood the situation 😊
It was also a big surprise news that no rabies on those countries!
I always realized from your video that we have to care about the local conditions. Anyway I am always learning them from your educational video!
It been tough days but I am very proud of both of you taking firm steps to import Yoda😊
I could feel that the Polynesian vet inspector is very trustful to you. And always with wonderful compilation ❤
Thank you Hiro, Yoda is a total local now and she speaks French 😂
The UK is rabies free. It’s the only country in Europe that is. Our quarantine rules are very strict. Not so many years ago if you wanted to bring a dog into the uk it would have to be quarantined for 6 months. We are lucky that we are an island.
Absolutely insane what you had to do. I've been travelling with my dog through south america and thought it was bad here! Glad you got it sorted in the end, but I guess the south pacific is out for me for a bunch of years to come. :( Really appreciate this video and hearing your first-hand experience.
We’re glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching! The South Pacific is really difficult to cruise with a dog and FP is just the beginning.
Congratulation on getting through that crazy process. We're so happy for Yoda to finally be legal! As much as we're dying to have a cat on board with us, we're committed to avoiding the process to import an animal. Australia is particularly hard and expensive with a long quarantine period in their facility and we just can't subject a cat to living in a cage for any substantial length of time. So I guess we'll just have to enjoy the kittahs we meet along the way.
😊😊 💯% much easier without the furry crew! Thanks for watching guys!! We miss you 😊
Certainly one of the hardest things to do is transport your loved animal from one country to another. If you think what you have been through was tough , then Australia is even harder to do. Not impossible but really really bad. Glad your all safe and sound and enjoying your trip so far. Thanks for the video.
We've heard it's the most difficult but possible if you go straight from New Zealand. Have you done it? We'd love to hear about your experience.
@@HarborsUnknown No, but I have watched others who had to jump through several hoops to get their animal into Australia. Going through NZ is the best way , I believe. I have heard that if you went straight to Australia , the animal would be put down as soon as it arrived, very savage. Watch "sailing Nandji" they sent their dog home to Aust from Asia through NZ.
😳😳😳 wow! Not something we are interested in experiencing, especially Yoda is totally against it 😂
The things we do for our animals. If we had a boat now we would surely go through the process to bring them along with us.
Donate for a Dream
Hard to leave a family member behind❤️ thanks for watching 😊
I love love love pets..... I just don't love pets on a boat because of reasons listed above. One Dog is hard enough imagine if you had multiple.
Yeah, if we hadn't already had Yoda for three years before moving onto Wanderlust we wouldn't have a pet onboard.
What a saga 😮It took some perseverance to get through all that bureaucracy - well done! Yoda looked very happy to get back on terra firma. Did she have wobbly legs? I did after only 17 days at sea 😂.
It was a saga!! Hopefully not to be repeated in NZ! I am not sure if she had sea legs but everyone else did😂😂😂. Thanks for watching
Hey, guys...I suggest that you start communicating with the New Zealand & Australian customs re Yoda. Here in Oz we have very very strict quarantine requirements for importing food and animals. It would be a shame to sail all that way only to feel that you have to by-pass Oz for reasons of quarantine restrictions; it's a land of extremes well worth exploring, a large island with so varied seascapes.
A tip if Oz is your intended destination along the way of your circumnavigation: sail the south-east down as far south as Tasmania in the summer, and the north-east coast up around Cape York to Darwin and the Kimberley coast in the winter with Tweed Heads as your delineating centre between the two. To properly enjoy the coast and inland a little it would take you as much as 15-18 months to circumnavigate the continent. NZ you could probably do in 3 months, but only in the summer. If you factor something like those seasonal times into your cruising timeline, it might firm up your plans for the rest of the south pacific islands cruising schedule.
Good luck.
I will definitely start communicating with New Zealand & Australian Biosecurite about Yoda. A friend of ours cruising with a dog is on the same timeline and has been in contact with New Zealand and has shared all the latest details with us.
Thanks so much for the tips on cruising Australia! We are definitely hoping to spend a good amount of time there.
WOW that made me anxious! Wonder if Parlay went thru this with their 2 dogs.
There were a lot of hoops to jump through but it’s possible! Not sure what Parlay’s experience was.
Love the American flag coffee mug.
This is Fabio, I have owned that mug for over 30 years! Bought it a the museum in Chicago a few days after arriving to US as a student. It’s the right size and definitely the right colors! Thanks for watching 😊
@@HarborsUnknown Take care of it!
@ray6659 😂😂💪💪
Oh my poor Yoda ... what a complex thing ... just so Yoda can walk with you oh my ...
Pretty crazy, but we did it! Thanks for watching!
I'm assuming maybe wrongly that once you've jumped through those hoops, it's easier to go from one small island country to the next.?
Unfortunately not!! All across the pacific is very difficult because either the dogs are not allowed to shore, or there are not vets who that can do the inspections and testing to clear the animal for the next country (example going from Tonga to New Zealand). May be easier in South East Asia, but the South Pacific (Oceania) including NZ and Australia is very complicated🫤😬☹️🤯
Any ideas where to train a dog to potty if your cata doesn't have fore nets?
I’ve seen people on monohulls train the dog to go on deck and they wash it off. You could also try training your dog to go on a piece of turf. Then he/she would go on the turf wherever it is.
Glad Yoda survived EU bureaucracy! I trust you checked those scanned forms and screenshots for personal info so you don't end up with phishing instead of fishing.
Us too! Great point! The only form that would have personal info to compromise was blank. Thanks for watching!
😎👍👍👍❤
😊😊😊💪💪👍❤️
Will the other countries be easier since Yoda has been out of a country with rabies for longer longer as you go west.
It should easier, NZ will still require a quarantine period, thanks for watching 😊😊
miam miam 🐕 🌭 😄
😊😊😊😊
I could not spend that amount of money or time on a dog, but then I’m not an animal/pet person, I like animals well enough, but in my opinion a boat isn’t the place for a dog.
We also don’t recommend getting a dog if you’re on a boat but our situation was reversed. We had a dog and we were getting a boat and couldn’t bear to part with a family member. ❤️ Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately the USA has rabies in nearly every state. Your dog will never be accepted easily into a rabies free country like the UK. I’m not even kidding when I tell you that before modern checks if you wanted to bring a dog for example into the UK it would have to stay in a state quarantine kennel for 6 months at the owners expense. That is how it was irradiated from our shores.
Wow!! We certainly appreciate all the efforts to keep rabies free countries safe from this terrible disease. Thanks for watching and for commenting!😊
TOO MUCH BUREAUCRACY TO SEE A PET INTO LAND!
Crazy isn’t it? Rabies free countries 😊😊 Thanks for watching 🙏
don't like your chances of getting into Australia please just sail on by
😂😂
Not a Fan of Dogs on Boats at all. Way too much Hassle. Good Luck getting into Australia.
Its definitely not for everyone but we couldn’t leave a family member behind. ❤️
