    NEAR GALE Sailing Conditions! Our ROUGHEST PASSAGE Yet Sailing Marquesas to Tuamotus
    We’re sailing 400 miles to the Tuamotus, a group of coral atolls in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to experience the incredible marine life, unspoiled beauty and off-grid lifestyle. Circumnavigators have stated this was the worst passage of their entire world voyage and unfortunately this trip turns out to top our worst journey list as well. Winds gusting to 37 knots, sustained at 27 for over 12 hours with 10-12 foot seas. Plus we need to perfectly time our arrival after a 3 day passage to enter the atoll at low, slack tide to avoid 9 foot standing waves and a 5 knot current against us. Join us for the adventure we didn’t see coming.

    If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, SV Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. Exploring the world, connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how great food can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. Seeking to balance the desire to explore and travel to beautiful, remote locations while leaving no footprint, minimizing the Hawthorne effect of the observers who change the environment she or he observes.
    We hope to inspire people and showcase the possibility of living an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment, all while keeping it real. Sharing the trials and tribulations of living off-grid, acknowledging the discomfort of detoxing from the modern world, finding pleasure in the subtleties of nature and joy in simplicity. Attempting to understand what makes the world tick and tock but also trying to gain a deeper comprehension of ourselves and identify what will satisfy that hunger for further exploration, for purpose. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world! Subscribe now to join our sailing adventure.

    Fantastic sail and episode guys!!! If you every get your camera gear wet, wipe it off and quickly throw it into a plastic container of rice asap! for 12 hours. I would always hand steer in rough waters if at all possible, I know it can be tiring but the weather helm from the rudders can really put a huge load on the steering ram/s and associated gear over long hours of rough weather. This will accelerate wear and tear on those systems bringing breakage etc. all the more sooner. As you may know, it's not always the big expensive items that suffer (although it's bad when they do), but sometimes it can be just the smallest of things that can sideline things and cause huge disruption to your ability to steer; raise or drop sails; monitor wind and weather, etc. This is why helm choice is also critical. As you would be well aware, because of your previous sailing legs from Panama, etc., it is so important to have a protected helm and to look after your systems as much as possible. Fair 💨'sand following 🌊's. 🙏

      Thanks so much! We’re glad you enjoyed the video. Great tip about the camera gear. We’ll keep that in mind but hopefully it will stay dry. We agree it’s best to hand steer in rough weather. To your point, the equipment really takes a beating. Thanks for watching!

    You guys are animals! Nice job on the reefing. I felt so bad for you on such a long passage with rough weather. You guys really need a third crew member to make cruising easier and less stressful. Otto is a very trusted friend of mine and would be available to you for your long passages. We had Otto on board crossing the 100 miles from Key West to Marco with 25 knot winds on our beam. Otto navigated our 41 foot monohull like it was on rails. With such a nice vessel you guys should really consider taking Otto on board with you. Once on board Otto is really cheap. He doesn’t use up your fresh water and eats little to nothing. PM me and I will hook you up with Mr Otto Pilot. 😂🤣😂

    that timelapse was super cool! ... it's taken me 3 days watch get to that point in the video... finally the weekend and some time... I hope y'all are doing well... I plan to go with seawind... however our timeline isn't for quite awhile before we have early retirement. I can't wait to see the tough sailing later in the video... those kinds of things really speaks to me because I'm eyeing a different (smaller) seawind cat and although our initial years will be coastal and Caribbean we want to circumnavigate... it's important to see details on a boat and a company that can push blue water... I want to be able to go to iceland, and down south where y'all were, maybe even cape horn. really push those latitudes... no ty on the south ocean and the arctic however lol.

    Good video. Good sailing clips. Third reef (always seems to happen in the middle of the night.) Heaving to on the 1260 was difficult (self tacking jib), but we could get turned completely around and not even be aware. Usually to get back into the wind we had to turn on an engine. On my monohull, I can heave to and then just turn the rudder and wait a few minutes and the boat will turn around and get back into the wind so I can get back on course. (It's easy. I did it the first time I tried.) Just the difference between cats and monohulls. (I don't do ten knots)

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  Před 9 měsíci +1

      On point!! Coming from a monohull and a trimaran I share your feelings!!
      With the self tacking jib we used a barber haul to bring the windward sheet hard to windward and it seemed to work well. Third reef on main and we moved downwind (rather than the expected upwind) but I liked that because the reefs were upwind about 8nm and I wanted to sleep 😂😂

    • @WillN2Go1
      @WillN2Go1 Před 9 měsíci

      When I came on board Kiskadee with my carabiners., everyone asked, "What are those for?" Later I asked, "What's a Barber Hauler?" Somehow I'd looked that up and didn't find a clear enough answer. These two worked worked well together. For the main we tied an alpine butterfly in the middle of a rope, carabiner'd it to the main. Same with the jib. We liked our barber haulers. We also learned (painfully) to always pin those end blocks on the self furling track. @@HarborsUnknown

  • @JosePedroEspinosa
    @JosePedroEspinosa Před 9 měsíci +1

    There is a trick that is used when the wind exceeds the range of a sail, and that is to partially cover it with another smaller sail. If you put the jib on at the same time as the screecher, the jib will take a good part of the pressure off the screecher, and you will also increase the total surface area of your sails, increasing speed without risking damage to the screecher.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Thank you Jose! We have used the jib to blanket the screecher in the past, mostly to furl it when there was too much pressure on it, never to keep sailing with increased apparent wind. Something new to try! Thank you!

    • @JosePedroEspinosa
      @JosePedroEspinosa Před 9 měsíci

      @@HarborsUnknown Look at this video, full main, jib and gennaker at maximum speed with strong wind, I think it must be blowing far more than 30 knots due to the state of the sea. czcams.com/video/Ann4_5KTc68/video.html

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  Před 9 měsíci

      😂😂😂😂 she is a great boat! The autopilot on the other hand 😳. It was undersized to the vessel performance, even though it is correct for the weight the amount of pressure on the long rudders was too much. We now have a T3 (which has not caught up in the videos) and so far it’s working like a charm. What a difference it makes to have a functioning autopilot 😊😊

    Great video- thanks! I don’t know if this is feasible on your boat, but can you tie a knot in the topping lift so it can never get too low and hit the coachroof (this assumes the knot would not fit through a jammer before going to the winch)?

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  Před 9 měsíci

      Thank you for watching and thank you for your insightful suggestion!! It is a great idea and difficult to implement on our boat. On the SW 1600 the topping lift comes down inside the mast and in a conduit in the nacelle. When exiting there are 2 separate turning block only a couple of feet apart before going through a hole in the floor of the cockpit. When exiting the hole there is a jammer about 8 inches away and then the main central which less than a foot away. Putting a knot in between any of these stopping points would be rather difficult and prone to getting stuck areas that are hard to access.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  Před 9 měsíci

      It is a single line reefing set up for 1 and 2 and slab feeding for 3rd.
      Bring sail to center (optional) but easier to handle for us, tighten topping lift, drop main halyard to mark, reef Into desired reef, retighten the halyard and re trim the sheets. • @HarborsUnknown
