WILL LS3 (REC-PORT) HEADS WORK ON A 408 STROKER? HOW MUCH POWER CAN AFR 245 HEADS MAKE? WILL 225 TFS GEN X HEADS WORK WELL ON A 6.0L? CHECK OUT THE ANSWERS TO ALL THESE QUESTION IN THIS VIDEO. I COMPARED A SET OF 799 HEADS TO REC-PORT LY6 (LS3) HEADS TO A SET OF TFS 225 HEADS ON A CAMMED 6.0L. I ALSO COMPRED A SET FO 317 HEADS TO REC-PORT LS3 HEADS AND AFR 245 HEADS ON A LARGER 408.

I’ve got Mamo 205 heads on my 408. The part throttle response and drivability is crazy. I have this motor in a regular cab Silverado and it throws the truck around like a rag doll 😂
Big engine, small truck, do it in a extended cab, both standard and long box, then a crewcab with the 6.5 box.
@@shadowopsairman1583 I have a 4x4 crew cab 1/2 ton a worked 6.0 throws it around easily. If I had 408 cubes it would be getting close to too much for stock suspension
I’d love to see a video about broad torque band on a stroked LS. Like a 408 with a truck Norris cam and a S475 turbo…
I put a set ported 799 on my 408 coupled with an LSA ported blower. Hoping and praying for the best. 😬
Man this is exactly what I asked for a few videos back. The man delivers.
Awesome, just what I wanted to know. Keep up the excellent work Richard!
Very good 👍 as always, glad you ran the 317 heads again and also the 408.interesting to see the difference in power compared to the 6.0 to the 408
GREAT VIDEO RICHARD!!! START WITH A 6.0 IS THE KEY!!! WHERE CAN YOU FIND A 6.0 ? JUNKYARD ? OR AFTERMARKET ? THAT MOTOR IS A GREAT STARTING POINT FOR ANY PROJECT. GREAT VIDEO AND THANKS FOR SHARING!!! I LEARNED SO MUCH!!
I’d love to see a lower RPM engine combo, my street car doesn’t run at 6500 all day lol
This mans doing gods work.
I’ve got AFR 205s on my 408 with a 233/239 grind and a ported TBSS. The throttle response on this thing is nuts on the street. I’ve got a 3600 stall in it. It’s not the fastest thing on the block, but I bet it’s the most fun! It’s explosive in my single cab Silverado.
I have almost the same setup up but prc 225 heads have you dynod it or ran it on the track ?
@@gregoriobarrios784 I haven’t, I’m guessing 480 at the wheel? I need to get a decent drive shaft and get it on the dyno.
Like seeing these videos, they have helped me a ton while selecting parts for my 408 build. Can’t wait to get my Chevelle on the chassis dyno. 9.7:1 408, Texas speed ported 317 heads, Summit 8715 cam (222/233 .600/.575 115lsa), TBSS intake, and 1 3/4” long tubes. Built it for a great cruiser, plan on doing hotrod power tour type stuff.
Why such low compression?
@@chipcurrey653 Yeah I was also going to ask if he planned to run it on 87
#boostmotor :)
@@chipcurrey653 as others have guessed, somewhere down the road I’ll be adding boost and 91 octane is the best I can get locally. I like to build stuff once, so I prepared for the future with lower compression, extra ring gap, and a bit more bearing clearance.
I just got my 408 back. 10.3:1 i can understand him going low compression for fuel reasons, but I’m going E and gonna give ‘er all she can take. Should make 1050-1100 wheel pretty efficiently.
Good information! Cathedral port definitely for under 4k rpm truck engine.
I genuinely appreciate when you're comparing apples to apples.
For a Na build totally worth it!! For a boosted application as you said, just not necessary, throw in an extra 4psi and you make the same
So on a 408 just run stock 317s?
Just do both upgrades! The heads given more flow and power then add some extra boost as well. That’s my plan to build a healthy motor.
70 years ago J C Whitney Inc. had a catalog that was full of stuff(gadgets) guaranteed to deliver gobs of power in my 1951 Plymouth with a 230 cu. Inch straight 6.
Had the hardest time (never did) get above 65 mph. Exhaust cutout, dual ball & ball carbs, shaved door handles, milled head with copper gasket sounded great tho
Hey Richard I hope in the evening before reading the comments and Questions you make yourself a good strong high octane beverage 😮
Airboat information for me thank you Sr.
What ever happened to the k series big bang motor?? I really want to see that! Love your videos btw!
Right on
Hello Richard. I found the thickness spec for the fel pro head gaskets. 48.
Nick's Garafe posted a video today removing a Long Ram 413 from a Chrysler 300J. It should be an interesting build
I have the AFR 245s on my current combo, a pair of TrickFlow 225 GenX on the shelf and a pair of 243s on the shelf. Cathedral gang, although my main reason staying cathedral all this time is because I had a new FAST 102 cathedral intake.
I'm think the 225 tfs head would run better at the track on stroker ls vs 245 afr
@@chevy19699 I should mention that I have a 427 but you still may be right.
I’ve learned so much watching your videos. I just got my 408 back. It’s 10.3:1, forged rotating assembly, clevite h series, summit 234/238 .625/.605 on a 115, Johnson short travel lifters, yella terra rockers, btr .660 springs, comp hardened push rods, c5R timing chain, melling 10295, ported 317’s, Holley Hi Ram, Bosch 220’s, and will soon be reaching out to Chris1313 to get a triple fuel pump setup. I’ve been set on a vsr 88/104.5 t6. As far as turbo, what would you recommend to keep back pressure down to get high boost numbers, 20+psi.??? This is going in an 03 Tahoe btw
Dam Rich I wish you would’ve taken that 408 with factory rec ports and turbo’d it.. that seems to be the best budget built set up that soooooo many guys run or are considering running. And then to add to the flavor cam swap them from a turbo cam to a “NA” cam to see what the differences are.. That’ll get some views for sure
turbo just adds to what is there-so 580 hp x 2 (14.7 psi) would get you 1,160 hp is everything is right
He has done pretty much all of this before. He has many many cam head and boost comparison videos.
On the rec port head on a 6.0 is it worth porting them ...or are they big enough for that ci. If they are ported and to big then lose a lot of low and mid
Hi Richard, I love your videos especially the ones about the 408 strokers. I have a 408 stroker project of my own and I’m wondering what kind of power I can expect with my combination. It’s an lq4 block bored 30 over and stroked out to 4 inches hence 408 stroker with flat top dss racing pistons. The camshaft is a comp cams 54-471-11 with short travel lifters and factory 1.5:1 roller rocker arms. I would like to get afr 245 cathedral port heads and an lsxr intake with about 90mm throttle body and 1k cc injectors. Please tell me what you think?
YOU MEAN 1.7 STOCK ROCKERS, USE A 102 MM TB WITH THE 102 INTAKE
I may have missed it, but on the topic of heads - why wasn't milling heads/increasing compression mentioned?
Do the same comparison of heads on 408 turbo to prove the last thing you said
Hey Richard , when’s your next remote turbo setup video ..proper tubing, heat wrap etc etc ?
unknown
I wonder what how much a stock LY5 would make over a stock LM7??
TEA cathedral heads are a great kept secret. rec port flow numbers but a 31cc smaller runner.
I would of like to of seen aftermarket LS3 heads on the 6.0 , as it makes it seem the ls3 heads wouldn’t be better , as it clearly showed the stock LS3 is better than stock ls1-2,6 heads , so why not compared close to the same LS3 heads too..
Hey Richard can you do a video that incorporates the “budget” Mast Factory Cast cylinder heads?
budget mast?
You said you felt like the heads were too big.... what cam would you have gone with to utilize the heads better?
Have you compared a stock ly6 and a lq4? Like to see the difference in the lq4’s cathedral port 317s vs ly6’s Rec port heads with vvt.
LY6 IS ABOUT 40 HP BETTER
Go Richie!
I was looking at the gt 45 turbo for this setup.
I just put two GT45’s in my eBay cart after the live this morning.
How would those 3 6.0 setups compare to a 469 cam ??
What was the compression on the 408?
Great content 👍
So I had a turbo charged 403 (stock bore) with ported 243s and a edelbrock proflow intake, with a btr custom cam. Then a 346 in (lsi bore 5.3 block) btr custom cam, with the same heads, intake, and turbos. At the same boost level (15psi) the 346 was quicker in the 1/8. Had a transbrake, big stall, so power under 4k wasn't really a factor. I always assumed the heads just were not enough for the larger engine....is that wrong.
How would only reducing cubic inches give a quicker 8th mile?
Hey Richard, I'm building an all forged 408 stroker with a chopacabra cam, planning on the afr 1501 enforcer heads, and possibly the jegs sheet metal intake. Could you tell me what approx hp this setup would be so I can figure out what I need for the fuel system. Engine should be 11.1.1 compression. Thanks
LOW TO MID 500S
i wanted to know what the TFS heads did on the 408
Do u sale any motors when u r done r the heads ls
First and something about squirrels
Hey Richard, I hope all is well. I have an LS 6.0 with cast iron heads, what head’s would you suggest? 243 heads or 823 rect port heads. I plan on doing a cam and cylinder heads. I’m want to go with a single turbo setup. I also want to run a th 400 transmission behind this setup, it will be a street/strip car
Usually he just tells us to run whatever heads we have with boost. But if you’re looking to lose the head weight, I’d suggest the 243/862 heads.
PICK THE POWER CURVE YOU LIKE MORE-THE 823 DOES DIFFERENT THINGS THAN THE 243
Richard, I’m running a stock LQ9 with an old patriot 226/226 .585/.585 lift on a 112 lsa. Heads are a prc ls6 stage 2.5 with a 61cc chamber. Do I have room for a larger camshaft in your opinion ? Or do you think piston to valve clearance is going to be too tight with the stock flat top pistons and a 61cc chamber
you have room for a bigger dual pattern cam
Richard, have you had the opportunity to run a set of ported 317s on a 6.0 or a 408? I wonder if they are a good alternative to aftermarket heads?
the big bang 6.0l ran ported 317 heads
6.0 with trick heads make 30 hp less then 408 stroker with trick heads. A stroker should have more hp then that right?
What Pistons are in the 408?
I'm looking at running some 823 heads on a 408, but my question is at what point do you need to upgrade valves? Will stock valves handle say 20 or 25psi on a 408 running e85?
they will handle that
For the money, rebuilt 6.0 with a forged bottom, stock crank, slap a VSRacing 7875 kit on it for $1,200 and you're at 1,000hp for 1/2 the money of building a stroker with aftermarket heads to make 400hp less. #ish lol
Richard, for those that aren't color blind, can you please use different colors for the different combinations? It's very hard to (nigh impossible) to tell what the curves are doing when they are the same color stacked on top of each other.
can't
My Lq9 with rec port heads won't pull away from my wife's ls1 with 862 heads till after 4000rpm. Both have nearly identical cams. 227/231 in mine vs 228/231 in hers. Transmissions go change the gearing quite a bit, 4l80 in mine vs 4l60 both cars 2.73 gears, both in 01 Z28's.
I just decided before watching this to do with a 4000 stall since the 3000 was doing no good. Hers has a 3600.
If you mill the rec port heads you can pull away on low end. Little trick I did with my lq9 was took 243 heads but had combustion chamber made to the size of 862 heads which upped the compression and gave more on low end so in theory if you had a smaller cc on the ls3 heads you could pick up some low end pep
@@swappedoutZ71 I'm seriously thinking of doing just that on my next build if I and when I have to tear the engine apart. It's just so darn reliable lol. Mill the heads, cut some valve reliefs and match a cam. Her car ran a best of 8.1@86 in the 8th and 12.6 in the 1/4 @109
I ran 8.2 in the 8th @89 and 12.5 @115
Richard i love your videos but for the love of god when you do the 799/243 heads and cam on a 6.0 please stop using the factory intakes and use either a fast or msd when you do these im going to go out on a limb but most people builing these are running ls6 doorman intakes (some are i know) sorry for the rant but it's like keeping a build up and not delivering and its painful lol
I have run them with Fast (and other) intakes many time-please don't generalize about 2000 videos from watching just 1
What about a 408 stroker with 706 heads ported shade tree mechanic style?
yes
Richard when can you do a ported ls3 head vs a trickflow 225 head on the ls 408 stroker?
I don't have either of those heads
@@richardholdener1727 ohhh nooooo!!!!
2yrs ago that dorman ls2 intake was less than 400 bucks shipped. Now it's almost 800. Ridiculous
can u run trick flow 205 gen x heads on a 408, or do u need bigger
they will support a lot of power, but I would go bigger on a 408
Anyway we can see what power we are getting from idle to 5k rpm? I have no intentions on reving over 4500 rpm
SHOW ME A VID OF YOU RUNNING AT WOT AT IDLE
How would the GM CNC rec ports work on the 408?
better than stock ones likely-just don't know how much
Do you think stock LSA heads would do any better than the LS3?
no
Can you get a truck 6.0 ls to make alot more torque without spending a fortune
yes-706 heads, headers
Richard looking for a head recommendation for a 408 high compression race engine. The curve ball is we have to run a .095 4 hole restrictor and 4150 carb. Thank for your advice 6500 max RPM.
.095?
@@richardholdener1727 Yes sir it in the SRL modified tour rules, .95x4, 1 inch height carb spacer under the carb. Thx again. 6500 rpm max, 408 max CI
.95 MAKES MORE SENSE... .095 SEEMED A TAD ON THE SMALL SIDE
@@richardholdener1727 Do you have a recommendation?
as a guess-620-ish lift, 246/254 @ .050 and tight lsa 105
Boost would make that large head work if you go to big heads boost drops more power less boost/heat =less detonation all good
maybe at some VERY elevated power level
"max flow" at 700 or 800 lift doesnt mean you need a cam that large because air flows a lot faster on a live engine than on the bench
Can you do an LSA Supercharger test soon?
don't have
@@richardholdener1727 someone donate a an LSA to this guy!!
They should make this man’s work into a bible
Can you do videos on other types of engines? Jeez everyone acts like the LS is the only engine that exists
can you look through the playlists of dozen or so OTHER motors
Wish you would have done the same cam too and could you not run the 799 head because of bore size(on the 408)?
the 799 are smaller valve heads so they work no problem on 6.0 which has a 4" bore
@@robholmes2129 I know they are 4.000 stock but the stroker should be 4.030 so is that why because the bore size was now too big, I've done plenty of 243/799 heads om 6.0 just curious why the 408 didn't get rhe same.
@@torqueandbeanssauce I think these are 2 entirely different test sessions so the heads were not all in the same place at the same time
WHY WOULD 4.03 BE TOO BIG FOR 799 HEADS?
What if you run a pair of aftermarket rec heads on a 408 with twin turbos?
what is your question? After market heads work with boost
Yes
all heads work with boost-the more you make na-the more you make at each boost level. After market heads can make more than stock (unported) heads. Ultimately the turbo(s) determine the power output.
@@richardholdener1727 thank you Richard 👍

I have a pair of PRC (Texas Speed) 5.3 heads, stage 2.5 (as they call it) cnc ported, 62mm combustion chambers, 2.02 int/1.57 exh valves, and .650 dual springs. They are going on an LS1, with 233/239 .600/.600 112LSA cam, 1-7/8 longtubes, Dorman LS2 intake(same one in this video), 92mm tb, 42lb injectors, and Vararam "ram-air" intake; I haven't installed them yet, but wonder what the final number might be.
What made you pick that cam? From what I've seen with all the newer grinds there is definitely more power to be had from going to a longer exhaust duration.
@@nowayjose596 honestly, I don't have a legitimate reason, other than Texas Speed recommended it at the time, as it was an option in a head/spring/cam package deal. I bought it about 8 years ago or so, and am just now getting time to install it. Have you better suggestions? I'd appreciate any, thanks.
@@unicornsqueezins7906 I've been looking at cams myself and you've got a very similar setup to what I'll also be doing which is why it caught my attention. I think most of the newer designs are for LS3s since they're newer engines but with ported cathedral port heads and a decent intake you're flowing closer to an LS3 top end at this point. You can use an LS3 cam (and will have more options if you do) but will need a few things to make it work. To avoid messing with those extra pieces you'd need I'd probably be looking at the BTR LS1/LS2 Stage 3 which is 231/244 if I were you.
@@nowayjose596 thanks man, I appreciate the advice 👍
@@unicornsqueezins7906 No problem. You'd probably be fine with the old cam (assuming you have enough PTV clearance) but I know BTR specifically has gone through and updated the specs/lobes on their LS1/LS2 cams within the past 3 years and I like that continued innovation.
What gas were the engines on?

I HAVE 241 HAVE YOU TESTED THEM ON 6.0 LS
yes-see the stock head test
Here's my question - WHY do you always run these HUGE cams instead of smooth, streetable, smogable cams that can be used in a real daily driver?
PLEASE SEE ANY OF THE OTHER 1000+ VIDEOS WHERE OTHER CAMS WERE RUN (THE WORD ALWAYS DOESN'T ALWAYS APPLY)
😀 🎺
Not really a fair test when using the FAST intake with the GenX heads… you should of done the test with the Dorman intake with the aftermarket heads. So I’m guessing those heads were drastically helped out with the FAST intake manifold so the genX head results are not accurate. The Gen X heads probably don’t really make much more power then the rectangular port LS3 head’s using the LS3 intake.
the ls3 heads had an ls3 intake-the equal of an ls3 Fast-why limit the flow of either set of heads?
My bad… you did use the Dorman intake with the Tick Flo heads then the FAST Intake.. don’t know how I missed that. Since the stock LS3 intake is identical to the FAST LS3 intake….it would be interesting to see what happens when the new raised FAST LS3 intake was tested on the rec port heads .
Still would of been interesting to see what the FAST intake would of done tested on all the cathedral port stock and aftermarket heads.
I’m thinking of pulling out my 6.2L L92 with severe cold start piston slap, and dropping in a all aluminum 5.3L LC9 or LH6 . I’d delete the DOD BS that’s on the LC9 .
Personally I blame squirrels..
