Here are the lyrics Contrary to what you might think, this song is in fact not a performance of “At Night” from Seventeen Seconds, but an early version of what would later become “A Forest”. The lyrics are not those of “A Forest” or “At Night”, but they are still along the same concept as the latter. This was the Cure’s first TV appearance, as well as one of, if not the, first gigs to feature bassist Simon Gallup and keyboardist Matthieu Hartley. Silent night Speed or Sleep Don't Look Behind Me Curl Someone's got to watch It says so in the book Someone's got to watch At night The sound down there Will lead you uphill Crack down chest In your sight It's all gone fine And round again It's the same Sound
There's a beautiful, hi-quality version of the entire performance on the competitor streaming network "V him E Ohh" with the blue and white logo: "The Cure live paris 1979 (full version)"
I am by no means a Cure fan, more of an avantjazz guy, but I keep returning to this one. These young lads play music which seems to be just identical to themselves. What I sense here is 100% authenticity and that's among the best & most substancial things you can achieve in music. Powerful stuff, fascinating clip, thanks for the nth re-up. Another little thing that makes me question ~95% happening in the oh-so-authentic jazz world. The way Smith uses that intervallic tension-release-thing in the guitar solo here makes me think he was probably familiar with King Crimson's Red-LP (middle-section of Starless)?
Une version parfaite de The CURE à leurs débuts ! Si jeunes et déjà si talentueux ! Un de leur chef d'œuvre ! Mon préféré ! Love The CURE and Robert Smith since I was a teenager !
It's only because I love The Cure so much I can give comments on how this song was created. First of all Mad World by Tears for Fears inspired the chord progression, Robert's passion for jazz inspired his playing by 3s in a 4/4 timestamp, Buzzcocks inspired him as a singer, as for lyrics, yes, like most bands, you have a scrapbook of lyrics and try and fit them into the music, since music always comes first, lets just be glad this spawned two songs! The trouble, is once released as an album, you can't improvise anymore, Pink Floyd is a good example, once released, play to the note and word ever since!
I have a PAL DVD from a French TV show called "Chorus" that has the video for this (3 song set, without that animated stuff over it) and many other artists and performances from that era. It looks like someone took that video for the "At Night" segment from it and put that other stuff over it. It is a great DVD set to get if you can still find it.
This one just feels so much more raw. Less synthetic. But I also love the ‘92 versions that are more polished. Same song but different feel entirely. Good songs grow and take on a life of their own. This is a good song. No matter the year.
It's a nice performance and all, but all of the "this is the best version" comments have me shaking my head. If it really was so great, I don't think Robert would have completely rewritten the lyrics. If the idea is that this version is more "punk," than I personally am very glad when they cut it for the album, they cut it post-punk style. As a post-punk song, it's definitive. As a "punk" song here, it's just another decent song. In particular, the keyboards are awful in this performance, and fantastic on the studio version. The REAL treat here is seeing Robert in those pink pants!!!
What are the lyrics of this version? I think part of the term "Raw" for some means the flaws like you mentioned on keyboards make it more authentic vs a cleaned up version.

The vocalist seems like a nice young man. Im sure he'll grow up to be a bright cheerful individual with well kept hair.
Looks like an avid gymnasium goer too.

This version seems to keep getting deleted. It's the best one by far!
I know. I’ve been searching for it for ages. It’s criminal that the only version online is this one with the shitty tree overlay.
@@SuperPussyFinger I guess I better rip the audio at least, in case it goes down again. Can preserve the track and reupload.
Beautiful song
@@nunoramirez2441 I've got the file for this video saved on my PC now. Will replace if this one gets nuked.
@@SuperPussyFinger shitty tree overlay lol made me chuckle

This uptempo version of the song, the video, Robert with short hair, 👌❤️💯

This is punk AF 🔥
The pink pants are legendary.
Who knew that A Forest and At Night were close sisters?
Awe man, what I would give to go back to 1979 ; oh, to be four years old again.

Amen brother!
Such a good song
Always in my heart ❤

This Paris Cure concert is my favorite by far but it keeps being deleted, resurfacing, etc.

If i had a time machine id be in this audience.
at last lets hope it stays

Só tinha 19 anos nesta época...anos dourados...👍😎
I assume somebody claiming copyright as the best version has been removed from YT
Is it just me or does it feel sped up at all. My favorite thingbis that its mellow and haunting but this feels like a normal tempoed song.
at 1:50 the drums sound like ‘jumping someone else’s train’
Simon Gallup looks like a French Sailor. 😂

Too bad they used the forest imagery throughout...a pure band video would have been better.
They had it and it keeps getting taken down! 😡 So, the only ones that survive are the ones with imagery overlay.
At Night is far better than A Forest.....
Post-punk got downgraded to -punk, sounds cool tho
Bad take
