- In this week's video we look at 4 benefits and 1 drawback of buying an awning tent setup versus purchasing a rooftop tent. All the items seen in this video are Adventure Kings purchased from the 4WD Supacentre (minus the awning) and the prices are correct as at the 18th of May 2021.

i use both rooftop tent and an awning tent at once, the awning tent for privacy when needed and somewhere to store the table and gear plus cooking stuff and esky etc in the shade and sleep in the rooftop tent. I think it's best of both worlds
That sounds like the ultimate setup.
Great video. I have the Kings 2.5x2.5 awning and I just added a Darche Panorama 1400 to my 4x4 today.
I will get the awning tent tomorrow as I can use that instead of my gazebo or tent so I can st up my day/eating/storage area in the awning and sleep in the rooftop. no moving bedding around.
I used to sleep in a tent or the gazebo and set up the awning for eating/relaxing but the rooftop saves heaps of time and gives more versatility.
After removing my flat rack roof-rack the rooftop tent is only 4kg heavier than my rack with the tent on top, I also have room for a 1200x500mm box behind the rooftop to store clothes and extra bedding and a 100W solar panel on top of that.
I was just looking at this on the supercenter website when I thought I might check some videos first, you have convinced me to get it.
My main reason for going rooftop is that i have found so many beautiful camp sites over the last few years where I couldn't find anywhere to put a tent. With the roof top I can camp on rocky, muddy, uneven ground and all I have to do is level the vehicle with rocks, a shovel or dropping tyre pressure on selected wheels.
The only thing I might want to add is a quick release and pole setup for the awning so I can leave it setup at camp and drive away for the day
I am heading off for 4 days and finally have a setup I hope will meet all my requirements.
If you are after a cheap tent or gazebo call me 😂
Well that's even better having both. Kings awning tent is still going strong.
EXCELLENT VIDEO
no background noise/music needed please.
We're trying to HEAR you and only you.
Thanks for the feedback.
Just a little quieter. Some of us struggle with background noise. Great video though
One of the greatest benefits of an awning tent is that where a rooftop tent is a single-use space, the functionality of an awning tent is far greater from a sleeping area, a changing area, a space to set up a table and a chair and a place to hang out in inclement weather.
You make a good point. Dual use is important when travelling to keep weight down.
Honest truths RTT users don’t mention, just really a Elevated Bunk bed, good job mate.
Thanks mate!
You sold me on purchasing one of these just yesterday! I love the idea of the additional tarp also which I'll definately be seeking out also so thankyou so very much for your fantastic demo I really appreciate it! 🙌
Wow thanks for the great comment. Yes having the extra tarp is very handy.
@@AllThingsOutdoors You're welcome! and thanks for putting out such a helpful video! I'm sure I'm going to love my new tent and setup!
I have both roof top tent and fully enclosed awning roof top tent is way easier to set up and much quicker to put away in the fact that it is just on my roof. Not taking up space in the back of my car is great and I love the view from a pie looking over everything then being on the ground don’t have the issue in major downpours of the floor flooding in. I find the weight of the fully enclosed morning, pulls the awning down, intends to say egg in the middle when you have a major downpour causing the water to pool in the middle of the awning, not escaping off the sides. If you are going to run the setup, you really need a third poll in the middle of your awning that arcs upwards to make the water run-off correctly.
I've slept in my setup during rain and a s long as you angle the awning down the rains runs off with no issues. My awning tent also has a sealed base which is about 6 inches deep so no ground water ingress. Obviously there are other benefits to having a roof top tent which aren't described in the video such as better air flow and also separation from snakes and other nasties. Being a four wheel driver it is also my preference to not have so much weight up high in order to keep the centre of gravity lower.
Does the front zipper come with the awning or the tent? Mine only has half a zipper so the top of the door sags.
Yes. It comes with the piece that slides into the slot on the awning on the front and back. The sides Velcro onto the awning arms.
So useful .... thanks 😊
No problems. Thanks for watching!
How do you feel something like this awning tent holds up to wind and weather compared to a traditional ground tent?
Definitely not as good. The big flat sides become effective sails. You could use extra wall panels like the one in the video to deflect a bit of wind though.
Do you recommend the bigger Adventure Kings Awning Tent (suits 2m x 3m Awning) | Waterproof? Cheers
They are OK. It has a heavy duty waterproof bottom but mine is starting to wear a bit.
Thank you so much for giving me the idea to use the awning side wall as an extra space. Never thought of that! Freaking genius. Where did you get the extra poles to do that?
I just bought some extendable tent poles from BCF and then some guy ropes to tie them down.
@@AllThingsOutdoors Awesome :D thank you so much! 😊
can you actually sleep in there overnight without another swag? or its more for day-time trip? appreciate!
Yes you can and have several times. Very comfortable for 2 people.
So good! hows it go in the wind?
Haven't had it out in strong wind but handles mild wind OK.
Not sold on this idea yet. I still prefer a swag or RTT on a trailer. Interesting to hear what works for others though. Cheers.
All depends on the situation too. If you want simple setup and pack down a swag is hands down the better choice. I still use a swag from time to time. I have also been sleeping in the canopy of my dual cab lately which has been awesome.
What about when it rains and the awning construction doesn't handle the weight.
I usually pitch with a bit of an angle so the water runs off.
How does that work with the height of your tent?
The tent is lashed to the poles with velcro and the base can be pegged out. It doesn't take much of an angle on it for water to run off.
We have both and the annex for the rooftop
Sounds like the ultimate setup. I might end up with a rooftop tent one of these days but I still like to carry the boat on the roof.
I got both , rooftop and awning tents , love the KINGS stuff :)
I've also just bought a Kings rear awning and hoping that the side wall will fit nicely between the rear and main awnings.
Great video mate , when u getting back in the yak ?
G'day Dim Sim. I'm planning for a winter kayak camping trip soon.
@@AllThingsOutdoors awesome can’t wait
Me either!
Hiya, will a kings tent fit on an xtm awning please
G'day Kerwin. The XTM awning is the right dimensions but the important part is that it has the special slot track built into the front and rear bars to enable the tent to slot in. It should look like a small circular pipe about 8mm I side diameter that has a full length slot cut in it.
@@AllThingsOutdoors hi. Yes I just checked it has the sail tracks. Thanks
Yeah they are pretty common. I'd say it should be good to go.
@@AllThingsOutdoors thanks, the king's are a better tent with a permanent floor and roof where as xtm aren't. Thanks I'm off to go buy a tent haha
So where can I buy one?
From 4WD Supacentre. In most capital cities but I got mine delivered for a good price.
what's he link to the website for the tent.
www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/camping/awnings-awning-tents/awning-tent-2x2-5m.html?page=1
Any issues with the tent being that its kings ?
No, not so far and it has been used a fair bit over the last 6 months mostly in colder weather. I have a fair bit of Kings products and haven't had a problem.
it's not that cheap when you have to buy a double or 2 swags or some other beds.
Why would you need swags if you were sleeping inside a tent?
@@AllThingsOutdoors yeah but you still need some sort of bed. Most people I've seen using these tents use a swag. Probably cause they've upgraded from the swag under the awning.
Flat top awnings fill up with water when it rains.
I've had this happen before when the awning is horizontal. But when you give it only a slight pitch it does fine.
i use a telescoping pole in the middle for this reason, get like a pool up there on a bad night
you can just use and awning spreader bar, I got one from DRIFTA that fits KINGS swning and it works great.
Naaaaa! Dune roof top tent on a trailer. See "gunna doo"
I've seen a few people doing roof top tents on trailers. Would make a bloody good lightweight camper trailer.
