- This video is about two Porsche 944 Turbo Cup race cars I recorded during last year's Bernina Gran Turismo, an event born in 2014 with the aim of keep the memory of the legendary Bernina hillclimb race of 1929 and 1930 alive. It's held on the beautiful Bernina Pass in Switzerland, on a section of the original route specifically closed to traffic,
Porsche decided to create a race series for the top-of-the line 944 Turbo in the mid-1980s, with a total of five championship series around the World: one in France, one in Germany, one in South Africa, one in Canada, and one in the United States.
The Turbo Cup cars developed for the series had substantial upgrades over their road going counterparts, including a larger turbocharger, a magnesium intake manifold and oil pan, a reinforced transmission, clutch, differential and axles, upgraded struts, shocks, springs, suspension mounts, as well as an adjustable ABS system, bigger brakes with racing pads, magnesium wheels, a transmission oil cooler, and a lightweight battery. The interiors were also stripped of all the unnecessary stuffs. This yielded weight savings of approximately 272 kg.
The 944 Turbo Cup is powered by a 2.5-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which was able to produce 250 hp. A total of 192 Turbo Cup cars were made.

i have such a deep love for the 944.... ^______^
I love the styling of the 944. Such a great balanced shape. A refinement of the 924 and 924 Carrera GT. I have a dead 924. I like the 924's slightly awkward, 70's sleek exotic wedge shape too. Unfortunately a bit anemic in performance and over-engineered for it's own good though.
The Porsche of the thumbnail looks more powered by Petronas than Shell
Great video! Cool to hear a 944 through your microphone :-)
To the best of my knowledge, the US never had a Porsche Turbo Cup championship, although cup cars were used in their various « showroom stock » race series (Firestone Firehawk et al.)
Exactly,these cars are from Canada
I miss my 944 (961)
I swapped a 968 turbo s 3.0L 8v in.
While I was waiting for the upgraded clutch, it was stolen.
Rest in peace
You swapped a 1 of 14 engine in? 🤨
@@vwjetta4138 I had to have it imported from the Netherlands. I was young and stupid.
In hindsight, someone probably saw it in the shop probably tipped someone off about it.
It was literally 2 days out of the shop when it was stolen.
@@vwjetta4138 most likely s2 bottom end with 8 valve head. these engines are like legos
Sound great 👍
Damn Bozzy you recorded just about every car that’s ever existed, including race cars!
They look great in motion. Mild mannered and controllable. However, they do seem to be very low on power. Probably an awesome car to learn the basics of driving on.
If I remember they range from 160-260hp depending on engine and turbo or na. This driver seems to be taking it easy, but it sounds fantastic (sounds like an a version). But ya, in today’s standards they are low power.
these turbocup cars are lightweight (around 1160kg) and make 250hp - 300. so certainly not lacking in the power department, These are actually kinda scary fast when they get on power.
I’ll say this yea it’s slow but you feel like you’re going way faster with how low it is and how you sit in it. So my 944 is basically as fast as my 2014 civic but feels way faster. Still that’s respectable for it to match a car from 30 years later even if it is just a regular economy car
I know these Rothmans-sponsored Turbo Cup units, they raced in Canada. What a surprise!,I can't believe in that, these cars are reunited in Europe.Millionaire owners must to be really petrolheads and with nice taste (Europe--->North America--->Europe)
Blue-ish green one looks like fresh mint BTW
People have no idea how ubiquitous these 944s were in the 80s and 90s!
Yo man
I heard Ferrari 499p doing last test at monza
I have a 1987 944 s
