- The Porsche 944 might not be the most iconic or beloved of Stuttgart's cars. But when it was handed a giant turbocharger and inflated to 1980s IMSA proportions it became one of our favourite racing cars of all time. Racing at Rennsport 7 at Laguna Seca we found out more about this incredible machine.

Looks like a combination between a NASCAR and a Super Silhouette.
It resembles the IMSA GTU RX7s with box flares from the early 80s (not surprising considering the IMSA RX7s were inspired by the Porsche 935s that were so dominant during the 70s and 80s).
@@CyanRooper The 924 came out 2 years before the RX-7 and the basis for the 944 GTR is the 924 GTP from 1980 and the 944 GTP of 1981.
IMSA Camel GT was truly unparalleled.
I miss 1980’s racing. Something so visceral and raw about the machines like this beauty.
Geez. As a spectator I remember that Porsche. Great stories there. Thanks!
Electrodyne and Racing Dynamics were amazing back in the 80s. This car was in their showroom. Just like yesterday.
I love the detail, the facts, the passion that pours out from these people. Love it all. Keith
A racing classic of a car.
I remember seeing that car in the Electrodine show room in Alexandia, VA. (In the 90s)
I worked at a local Porsche speed shop at the time. I worked on Chet's BMW a few times. (The original owner he mentioned)
I drooled over it many times, lol
Truly one IMSA cars I actually have not heard of.
Excellent interview... I got to help pit on this car at Summit Point racetrack for an IMSA race. My buddy Matt Stanton worked for Chet at Electrodyne and we helped with tire changes during the weekend. It was a very cool race car but i remember it had mechanical troubles that weekend and DNF'd. 😎👍
Great video. I love this stuff. I have pretty much stock 86 black 944. Run track Day at Road America. Love it .And the value is going up, win-win😎
May be the only "..You've Never Heard of" titles on youtube thats actually true. Great seeing just how many different Porsches they entered into IMSA.
I attempted at reverse engineering Audi's Umluft turbo system from the 80's Rally days. I'd love to see the wastegate plumbing assembly as described. Very curious.
Remember this at Summit Point. What a Rocket
I used to drive by Electrodyne all the time in Alexandria, VA. Would see some neat cars in the parking lot every once in a blue moon. They're off Eisenhower if I recall.
A similar car was raced in America by New Zealander Bruce Jenner in 1987 and was later brought over to New Zealand for a while and raced here by American Chris Knifel in the summer of 1993 for local Trans Am racing.
Not to be confused with Caitlyn Jenner, who also competed in a few IMSA and Trans-Am races.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 around the same time too! And did remarkably well.
@@alaricbragg7843 That's why it stood out to me, how often are there two drivers with the same name competing at the same time?
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 It had me confused!
New Zealand Bruce Jenner was our crew chief in 1979 our Porsche 934.
Seeing cars like that going full beans through the corkscrew just makes me happy :)
Love to see the car back on the track 🤟❤
Chet and Scott Vinchez proud to call them friends
wasn't there a version of that beast made for trans-am, too ? i remember efr driving one, i think
Absolutely gorgeous 🎉
Saw it race with Chris Kniefel at the wheel in Dallas. Must have been 1988? Was a cool car to watch.
-How many wastegates would you like?
-Yes.
What a great idea for endurance racing to have those 3 pee bottles mounted where the unused passenger seat would be. I usually just use a gatorade bottle, but it rolls around and can interfere with the pedals. Being above waist level, though, how is that engineered to raise the fluid level to shoulder height? Vacuum port? Is the attachment mechanism uncomfortable?
Only 1 is infact a pee bottle. The other 2 consisting of a back feeding hemorrhoid cream and an embalming fluid to store spare balls in ready for when the driver chooses to twist the giant boost knob in the cockpit there.
Excellent explanation. Laughed out loud. @@mattnewfoxred
100 inches wide?
Great interviewing, but it would be amazing to see the chassis and engine with the covers off.
what car is Lightning McQueen inspired by ?
The world: a Corvette ! No a Nascar !
Me:
immediately had to think of Cars franchise before i read porsche or anything else
Such a fantastic car--unfortunately, it struggled with the "But it's for people who can't afford a 911" curse.
Your right, its a shame. I've always thought of it as the thinking man's Porsche.
See why Toprak got tempted to BMW now! “Ve give you MEGA paddock scooter!”
I’m going to miss that race track
What? Why? Are they tearing it up?!
@@Adam-ub9nu d bag neighbors are suing over noise. They are trying but I doubt they will
It's not going anywhere. Don't listen to drama queens on youtube or clickbait headlines.
Cool car. Would have loved to have seen the powerplant.
I've seen this. It raced GTO class
This car should be faster than the GT3 Cup cars. Unusual how they blocked the rear fender flares at the back? The whole reason for this design ('Boss' 924 GTR) was to open up and evacuate the rear wheelhouse pressure area.
944 thumbs up lol👍
I own a 944 and couldn’t recognize this one. Not Cummings, Cumming. I live there.
One thing which makes my teeth itch is the completely random spacing between the rivets on the aluminium heat shield around the side exit wastegates. Hnnnnnnnnng.
How about taking the hood off !!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
The Jake Ryan Car
Cleetus McFarland's Dad?
"You've never heard of" say's who! People watching these videos more than likely have heard of it.
Lightning McQueen
too much talking not enough car
Moist
Panel work looks unrefined to say the least.
Yeah, well, it's a race car. I doubt they'll be entering it into the Cartier Style et Luxe show anytime soon.
Rubbing is racing after all.
You should have seen the first gen Monzas
The reason why it was never heard of is because it was slow and unreliable. Pretty much like the rest of the 944T tube frame cars. I think Chris Kneifel got the TA version of it, its only ever win. Other than that, they broke down, grenaded motors and just were off the pace. I guess today, they are a classic.
Alex Springer? Come on. Also, he never cared for those cars. Just the 962's that were becoming noncompetitive.
Are you talking bout the early 90s when the 962s was still used just not by porsche themselves? Cause if so your a bit out if line the 962s was still in a d around the podiums with other teams but there was the issue other teams not porsche was using them and did not know what they were doing. You just sound like a porsche hater here tho.
@@erikbritz8095 - They had their moments but Nissan and Toyota were way ahead of the game. Thus the domination. It was a lesson learned and thus why it’s not a free for all today.
Same for that 944T. Way too much exclusive factory teams that made that car obsolete pretty quick.
@@billsmith5960 wait are you talking bout the Minolta? Or the Ts020? Cause look mate the minolta won one race, the Ts020 is from a different era where porsche did not compete 🤔😅
@@erikbritz8095 Minolta? I have no idea what you are talking about.
600 PS ? Can you like for once use normal unit for power ? Horsepower or Kilowats ?
A simple search online converts 600 ps to 591 hp.
PS= the german word "Pferdestärke" which means horsepower. It is kW*1,36 (BHP is slightly different)
@@Mini-z1994 as even more simple to put 591 HP instead of 600 PS and everyone can be happy
Can you, like, like, like for once think outside the US? smh...
@@333pg333 Bro im not from there and btw you got a stroke there ? (like , like ,like)
