A really underrated card in this deck is Gaea's Blessing. It hard counters mill and can shuffle your graveyard into your library if you explore it.

I personally think that the deck needs a really good defense package. it has blue, so... plenty of spell sad either counter or bounce. also, some hexproofing.
last word, overwhelming denial for counter spells that cannot be countered.
rivers review, flood of tears and whirlwind denial
for hexproofing, near sheilda and diplomatic immunity enchantment. The reason I chose diplomatic immunity is it gives shroud and has shroud.
for removal, I might throwing swan song
as far as creatures go, I would put in hex catcher and Lord of Atlantis. I don't really think it needs much in the way of creature replacement.
The thing to keep in mind is that it needs more defense because of how Commander players usually think. The moment your guys start getting chunky, you know other players are going to want to remove them. and that usually involves removals cards and board wipes. probably plenty of board wipes with as big as his can get.
and a lot of ways, this deck has a lot of similarities to call for backup. in that, those creatures have a tendency to get very chunky without much in the way of help.

    update
I souped up this deck and think it actually generates more threat than All the praeters COMBINED. it isn't something I would ever recommend to someone interested in getting into Commander either. it's more for people who are experienced in all things Commander.
from this set, I would probably recommend for beginners something like the dinosaur deck.

recently just saw the price tag for the dino deck from this set at an LGS... it was $100 which is crazy. Besides that hakbal is gross at any price range lol

@@thescryguys3185 like I said, even out of the box? explorers of the Deep is not the most beginner friendly deck in Commander. but I have complaints with the lost cavern set in general.
The set booster's mostly get you either pirates or dinosaurs. you get some from the group's barely ever featured in Lost caverns. when you do get some vampires or merfolk, they really are never anything worth recommending. this is coming from someone who has opened many lost caverns set boosters.
I think if I were to actually seriously recommend a proper beginner friendly deck? it would probably be something from outlaws of thunder junction.
each of those decks isn't just beginner friendly, but powerful too. quick draw is what I consider the quintessential spel slinger precon. easily rivaling maestros massacre or even prismari performance. I actually thought about getting that one and throwing all the creatures from it into mystic intellect.
some others are from the fallout set. especially Scrappy survivors or hail Caesar. but, I don't think I'd ever suggest science or mutant menace to a beginner.
I didn't think much of neon dynasty, even though I did like its art. but the problem was, a distinct lack of compatibility. fear the cards from that said I would ever actually throw into a deck. and it's really hard to build a deck with neon dynasty cards exclusively. a pity.
I don't see myself using my explorers of the deep deck ever again. it is how I wanted it to be, but isn't really something worth using. because, even if you soup it up? many other decks will outperform by 10-fold against it. and as I've said already, it is not beginner friendly. beginners are going to run into problems I think.

Hakbal just being alive to buff a board is devastating. I won with 5 creatures out and a Return of the Wildspeaker choosing the anthem mode to swing for 34 in the air thanks to the merfolk that grants flying.

Oh man that's sweet. Good games! There's so much merfolk support that I just thank wizards for not making that an eminence ability haha

For me its not surprising the "Tutor Merfolks" are not in the precon. I can't remember a precon with tutors, which makes kind of sense if you see this as an entry level product and the player maybe don't know what to look at.

That's very much true but I thought about it from the price point aspect. They're relatively cheap and very niche in this case but I can understand not putting them in

No Seahunter? Good repeatable tutor if he stays out, and super budget.

Oh man! Totally mad I missed that one! I'll make sure to put that on the deck list nice looking out
