there are so many funny parts in the real life version of this story it would almost be hack to adapt it into a movie. I want to just clarify stuff as a native Jewish New Yorker, the Hassids are a small percent of the Jewish population but they are very recognizable for their clothing. I’m not the most informed about them but it’s pretty much common sense to us non-hassids that they are very much in a cult type religion. The messianic people especially are strange because they are so convinced that the messiah is here and they have pictures of this old guy all over the city and especially in Brooklyn because that’s where most of them live. There’s a group of buildings in prospect park that are only rented by hassids and I see posters all the time

i'm pretty sure they were attempting to tunnel from within the synagogue, to an abandoned property across the street that the group was actively trying to get the rights to (they claimed the litigation i still on going). The group of guys were part of the synagogue and fought the police for attempting to fix the structural damage from the tunnel. it was only found due to construction workers discovering it as they were doing work on the street.

I’m not here to try and preach, but I see a lot of people in the comments calling the Hasidim a cult, and even comparing them to Scientologists, and I just have to write a response to this because it is completely untrue.
Hasidism is a very vibrant religious movement that has its roots in the Kabbalah (Jewish Mysticism) combined with many traditionalist and conservative cultural practices. The whole purpose of the Hasidic movement in short is to look for Godliness in the natural world and live life in total accordance with the teachings of the Jewish faith, all to get closer to God and become more spiritually rich.
Some of them can be quite extreme like the ones who view the Lubavitcher Rebbe as the messiah. However, when you look at how the Rebbe’s legacy it’s not hard to see why he’s so loved, he’s easily one of the most prominent Jews in the history of the 3,000-year-old religion, as well as one of the most significant religious and spiritual leaders of the 20th century.
He united global Jews after the Holocaust (which he barely escaped, and most Hasidim are direct descendants of), and in 1950 revolutionized ideas of community outreach, he funded synagogues, hospitals, schools, care facilities, etc. He also wasn’t an extremist, he made a point of reaching out to non-Hasidim, including more moderate secular/reform Jews. His spiritual teachings are also pretty influential with works like Likkutei Sikkot, which is meant to explain Hasidic teaching and show Jews can live in a Godly way from day to day life. Think of all the banners and photos you see of him in the same way you may see a Catholic with a picture of the Pope in their house.
Like I said, I don’t want to go preach but explain to people the beauty that is at the heart of Hasidism. Obviously, there are flaws in Hasidic communities, but we shouldn’t look at them as this crazy religious cult, but as people who have found a different way of life that even more moderate Jews and non-Jews can learn from. In many ways, Hasidism has SAVED Judaism, by connecting people who were nearly wiped out and allowing millions of people to live in a deeply rich cultural, loving, and spiritual life.
I hope this makes sense, sorry if doesn’t provide that much I just wanted to give an alternate view to Hasidism from what I’ve seen in the comments if you want more information Drew Binsky who’s a travel vlogger made a wonderful video about life in the Hasidic community, where he talks to actual Hasids and goes into the history of the movement, I would HIGHLY recommend it for anyone unfamiliar. These tunnels were made for two reasons: 1. there was some kind of dispute between the congregation upstairs and the one downstairs, and 2. so they could access the synagogue and pray during covid. Cant wait for whatever goofy shit people come up with
It doesn’t matter why the tunnels were made, the problem is that you’re building fucking tunnels without telling anybody. These are not master craftsmen, it’s a bunch of random dudes with shovels, they have no clue what they’re doing. I don’t know if you know too much about architecture, but you can’t just start putting tunnels below buildings without making sure that it’s structurally sound.
