Don't forget they did this in the middle of a heavy metal show... THIS is why metal fans are the greatest appreciators of music in general.. not a sound from the audience until they finished then rapturous applause.
Well, I half agree. If you look at the Dutch beste zangers show (the conversations in between songs), it is indeed the metal singers that want to get rid of the differentiations in "kinds of music", but it is the opera singers that support them most in that queeste (like for example Taniya Kross, Maria Fiselier and Henk Poort). Look also at reactors here on YT like the opera singer "the Charismatic Voice".

These lyrics are over 600 years old, the song also very old. That's pretty old-school, I guess, and the metal community is totally comfortable with it, y'know?
Which just makes it even more awesome coming from Epica! They are classy like that. I don't think any other Metal band has tried this song (although there ould be some Metal bands that would cover some other classical songs, I think; can't name one off the top of my head, though). :)
The song is actually "only" 283 years old, written in 1736 by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. The lyrics are over 700 years old (13th century). But yes, definitely pretty old-school.

Hello. This duet was supposed to be for a male alto and a male soprano originally in 18th century. My guess is that Floor was playing the part of an alto. And they actually made a metal version of the second part of Stabat Mater. This was the first part "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" - a duet. Alto and Soprano are female voice types.
@@totallyanonymousbish9599 they are not exclusively female. Men can sing alto and soprano as well, just as women can sing tenor, baritone, and sometimes bass. It's a typical archetype, yes, but not exclusively male or female.

As someone said here ,metal fans are the biggest lovers of music ,see that crowd . They as i loved that so much and why not ,the piece and the way she as performed its amazing .we are so blessed when two angels sung for us . My two favorite female singers performing together. I have this concert on DVD. It is excellent and I highly recommend Epica-Retrospective.
As far as your comment about smoking, what was once vices are now prescriptions. As a cancer survivor, I would never have made it through without medical marijuana. First off it was good for nausea and lack of appetite. It also takes the place of painkillers, muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety and anti-depressents. That's five pills I'm off, along with the side effects that go with those pills. It's not a cure, it's a supplement. It's also not for everyone, but for me, it was a godsend. Luckily I live in CA.

As has been mentioned, this is from a very old Christian hymn which was scored in the 12th century. It’s the story of Mary standing next to the body of her son Jesus. Every famous soprano has sung this song. What’s amazing (except to Symphonic Metal fans) is that this would be performed in the middle of a Metal concert. It’s a tribute not only to the talent of Simone and Floor but also the roots of Symphonic Metal.

Epica is different, you think...Let's plug in a really old classical aria in the middle of our 10th anniversary show in front of a sold out arena of metal-heads and what do you know...You can hear the pin drop while these 2 angels delivery a reminder to us mortals of what angelic really means!!!!

I really don't feel that they need to plug in great classical music like this at all... it was probably a nice break for the rest of the band during the long anniversary concert.
Plus I get chills every single time I listen to this... the whole thing, as it is, is perfect.

I noticed that too and it brought back memories. I played with my band as the opener for their show a couple of times in The Netherlands. After the last time (that must have been in ‘96) they wanted us to tour with them through Europe. It never happened. I disbanded my band. I didn’t want to do it anymore.
But I didn’t know Pendragon wanted us to tour with them. Not at the time anyway. If I knew I certainly would have done it. That was my dream, to perform as much as we could for as many people as we could possibly reach. The reason I quit was the fact that we didn’t. By that time we’ve been together for 10 years and we just got a record deal. Man, If I only knew. We could’ve been on Kel’s shirt. 😂
