The Big Bang was Hublot's big bang in the watch industry that catapulted them into a legendary brand (thanks to Jean-Claude Biver)...BUT Hublot isn't typically "legendary" to a watch LOVER at all. If you're deep into this little hobby of ours you probably love Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko, Patek Phillpe, and AP (among many, many others) but WHY is Hublot not only loved, but in fact despised by many?
I won't give away the meat and potatoes of this video but one of the biggest thing is Hublot's movements. Their UNICO movement is incredible BUT that certainly does not make up for all of their other Sellita based movements and the premium they still charge for them.
Also, let's just ignore the fact that it kinda seems like Michael really likes the classic fusion. FUSION!

Today, Michael dives into exactly why it is that Hublot gets such a hard time from watch geeks!
We're gonna assess this subject in three parts:
1) Hublot's achievements and contributions to horology - While AP and Patek had their steel Genta sports watch heavyweights with the Royal Oak and Nautilus, respectively, Hublot saw an opportunity to do something different. That something different was to take the base concept of those watches, being industrial designed steel sport models, and swap out the integrated bracelets for an integrated natural rubber strap. Not a game changer, but it helped give those original Hublot models a bit of their own identity. However, it was the infamous Jean Claude Biver who stepped in and highlighted that the brand's main success is in their ability to fuse materials, to literally create a fusion on the wrist. FUSION! Anyway, now they have a watch with literal concrete on it, so that's nifty.
2) Why everyone hates Hublot - All of the above is fine, so what isn't fine? The movements, for starters. While they do have their own, relatively prestigious in-house movement with the UNICO, many of their watches are powered by base Sellita movements which can be had in watches costing a 10th of the price. There's also the issue of market, wherein a lot of the time Hublot is seen as a brand that is functionally used by people as a sign of how much money they've spent on their watch.
3) Can they ever become not hated? - Probably not, at least not among the watch community, unless they take some dramatic steps to adjust their pricing model which, if we're being real, probably isn't going to happen any time soon.

There are absolutely watches that will appreciate, and ones that you can predict will appreciate. But Hublot is far from the only brand where the price exceeds both the innate value and the perceived value on the secondary market.

Im actually surprised Hublot prices haven’t fallen all that far. I would pick up a classic fusion as an everyday beater if it had lost more value. I like the way it looks, and I don’t own any watches on a rubber strap, which apparently Hublot does well.

Hublot watches themselves are nice. I just hate the hype around the brand. They think they have Rolex clout when they clearly don't lol
Big difference between Sellita movements and JLC movements in terms of build and quality control. For example, JLC created their movements while Sellita waited for ETA patents to run out. Sellita are fine movements, but they are typically found in watches that cost dramatically less than any Hublot. Also, the Trinity have moved toward in-house mostly and the level of hand finishing is incomparable
@Watch Geek I think Tag Heuer is a little bit overpriced at retail. And im not a fan of the design personally. But objectively speaking the watches themselves are good watches for sure

I don’t think I hate Hublot; I even get drawn in to some of their watches. I just can’t see them as any kind of value for what you’re getting and there are so many watches and brands providing better value in their price range.

I just got a Zenith Defy blue ceramic, scratches that “modern watch” itch for me, but also fits right in with my Reverso and 88 Tudor Sub. Rounds out a nice 3 watch collection.

As I think Nico summed it up in one video, it is a "fashion brand". Unsaid, they aren't true watch makers and as a watch, due what you get, they are over priced. Marketing manipulation is king at Hublot, not watches and watch craftsmanship and technology.
I appreciate this more detailed explanation. It made it easier for me to more fully understand what Nico was sayingv with the background.

I like Hublot watches. I don't care what movement they use as long as it's reliable (unlike AP). As long as the watch suits me and looks good on me and it's not a fake I have no problem waring it. The hate that Hublot receives is nothing but internet trend set by Niko wanting attention that his mother never gave. Reliable movement, different materials, luxury materials, pushing the boundaries of what materials watches can be made of like concreat is really amazing and they should not receive the hate they do. At the end of the day they make beautiful reliable watches and that's it.
Heritage and all of that stuff is good to have but is not at all necessary. All that does not add anything to the watch apart of telling people about the heritage of the watch you are wearing and most of them will fall asleep hearing all that.

Hublot is a hypebeast type brand in my opinion. Jordans, yeezys, off-white, gucci, hublot..... I can imagine the d-bag wearing an outfit of that stuff right now, with one sleeve rolled up to show off their hublot.

People always use the same arguments years later "Oh they only use ETA movements". Guess who else has used ETA movements? Omega, Panerai, TAG Heuer, Breitling and plenty of others. Hublot hardly advertises the original Big Bang line anymore which use ETA movements and instead promote Unico 1 and 2. They currently have at least 9 manufacture movements from 2 column wheel flyback coronagraphs, a large date moonphase, a full calendar moonphase, a 10-day power reserve, a 14-day power reserve, a 5-day power reserve Tourbillon, a chronograph tourbillon and a 2 axis tourbillon. Who else is providing these types of movements in watches while also putting in a lot of RND to design cases from absurd materials? RM? Guess how much they're charging...
What Movement would u suggest for a project retail up to 5 to 6 k

It's actually not that bad, imo lol I hate hype items and thats why I dislike Rolex and esp their AD's on how they treat their clients. I do own one but thats about the only one i'd ever get. Weill, I own AP Royal Oaks and OffShore, two Nautilus and one blue Aquanaut, plus a few Rolex being my GMT Rose Gold my former favorite, now that by coincidence end up with the Golf Hublot that is a marvel and a joy, the I went for the all carbon GMT another beauty, so if you ask me in terms of enjoying the watch Hublot owns my preference at the moment, amazing products!!

Hublot watches are one of the top selling luxury watch brands, they are reputable and reliable and hold their value quite well. In my opinion they innovated a lot stuff, especially when it comes to design and materials which other watch makes followed afterwards, they were blinging out their watches years before it was a trend. What people don't like about Hublot is their limited edition scheme, their aggressive marketing and their overvalue on the higher end.

Personally I really like the unico aestetics, it's probably my favorite in all of the watchmaking world, and I can understand until a certain point their watchmaking policies, but I can't understand it at a $40.000 price point. either one or the other should definitely change.

- no long heritage
- Hublot “looks like” AP while RM “looks like” Franck Muller
- All those never ending limited editions
- Strong marketing
- Controversial Brands. You either love or hate it
Anyway Hublot meca 10 looks fabulous with in house movement… how about that…
I do not own a Hublot for obvious reasons, but I have to point out that Rolex used to be the same (in terms of watch movements) in their early days. And Rolex has never decreased their prices since incorporation. Albeit, Rolex movements are now in-house in the later half of the 20th century and are exceptional movements, but they built that out by reinvesting in the company's R&D and watch movements. Hublot is also taking a similar route. Today it might be hated but 50 years from now their watches will be a lot more valuable (given that they invest in their in-house movements and R&D).
So, lads, invest in one Hublot now for future investment purposes.

Almost everything has parts from different manufactures...cars, houses, appliances, etc. no one is putting a gun to your head and demanding you buy a Hublot. I would never buy one, couldn’t afford one, but if Hublot came to me and asked me to wear one, me like you would probably rock it. I think they look cool. Now you can hate me too 😛
