In this video, we’ll take an objective look at some luxury watch brands out there in the industry that tend to get more hate from enthusiasts than other brands. The point of a video like this isn’t to dunk on brands, but rather to provide a case study of the type of brand and consumer behavior that creates this type of climate around certain watchmakers. Do you agree with my takes? How do you feel about these brands?

I appreciate Rolex for what it used to be in the 1990s when I first got mine: a tough, well made, accurate and reliable tool watch that had a bit of status, but nothing too flashy. Just simple, understated quality. That you could go into any jeweller in New York, Copenhagen, London, Sydney or Hong Kong and get - at worst - at retail and quite likely a 20% discount. But a combination of brilliant Rolex marketing, increasing wealth throughout the world and clearly not too great increase in Rolex production numbers has seen us land where we have been for the past ~15 years...

About Rolex and innovation I would say what I saw on other leading brands in other segments. They usually fail when trying to innovate because of their own huge heritage. It is not they do things wrong. Customers expect from them exactly what they do like a Fender stratocaster or a Rolex daytona. Love your content by the way Teddy. Great job.

I picked up two Shinola watches, one for me and one for the Mrs, over 5 years ago. They were in a Nordstrom Rack store and I talked the guy into selling both to me for $300. Sticker price for these two quartz watches was over $800 at the time. We really like them, mine is a PVD squared face, and works great. The issue with Shinola is that it was affordable. Most people who live and work in Detroit could not afford anything they offer other than maybe the leather baseball. Today it represents the gentrifier, the outsider and developer who doesn’t live in the city but exploits it.

Can you please do a video to discuss the popularity of Rolex and the hype that is causing an increase in watch robberies across the US, especially in California? Also they have a couple of outlet stores where you can find some great values. With Panerai, going down to very small amounts of WR on what are essentially iconic dive watch designs on some models, and generally what seem like cost-cutting measures, while having a watch priced well above the Omega range, is one that's turned me off. With Rolex, yeah, everything you already said, and just what flex culture has done with Rolex, and how Rolex has *handled* their well-earned success with what feels like less than, well, class, and honesty...as much respect as I've had for Rolex historically, and as much as I love some of their watches, for now, they've really soured on me.

You could’ve called it “when marketing ruins a brand”. All three brands with a perception problem put all their eggs in the marketing basket. Hublot did it too early, Panerai reach it’s pinacle and fell down to earth unable to get past the image and Rolex is up in the high atmosphere waiting for the fall (gonna make the biggest crater when it hits the ground). All three brands attract customers with socially unsavory traits. It’s very hard to escape that trap after you fall into it.

Rolex made and continue to make some of the most collectible and sought after pieces that attract the most established of watch collectors out there… just look at how much some of the vintage models fetch at watch auctions. All brands rely on marketing but marketing can only get you so far if your product and how it’s presented aren’t solid enough. We need more videos/ places where we can talk about things we don't like in watches but in a constructive way. Being overly positive all the time is maddening. I was in a stream last night dedicated to that, on purpose, as an objection to toxic positivity. That's a new phrase for me but the concept really hits the nail on the head, especially in these times. We're people, we have opinions and some are negative. I see no reason why we can't share them too, if done respectfully.

  • @omarion07
    @omarion07 Před 2 lety +5

I agree with most of the points Teddy mentioned on why some people love to hate on Rolex but here’s my take on it:
1- Frustration from not being able to get a Rolex at retail within a short period of time. This then turns into bitterness towards Rolex, and jealousy from those who were able to buy one.
2- People being fed up with whole flexing and hype culture, and speculators who only care about investment value . Rolex is not the only brand that suffer from this, PP and AP are in this camp as well. But because Rolex watches represent over 90% of the above, they get the most hate.
3- Childish fanboys of other watch brands that envy the success and hype surrounding Rolex. So they click on every article or video that has “Rolex” in it’s thumbnail and start spewing hatred in the comments section. Some Omega and GS fanboys are particularly guilty of that. Other examples of this childish fanboyism are Apple vs Android and Playstation vs Xbox.
4- The too cool for school/indie type of people who like to be different and therefore hate anything mainstream. Rolex will probably be their main target for hating.
On the other, you’ll rarely find an established and long term watch collector/lover who doesn’t admire and respect the history, achievements and success of Rolex.

The role of marketing in attracting customers that give a brand its image can’t be underestimated. The brand ambassadors are less significant than the impression that existing customers might have other potential customers. How some watch enthusiasts will always say seeing a Rolex on someone’s wrist is not a sign that wearer isn’t a fellow watch enthusiast. After talking to them, they kindly refused to sit down with me to talk about getting a watch. They said I have to buy from AD from my state,in Louisville, which is 3 plus hours driving. I think all the hate on Shinola is misplaced- they were essentially a micro brand originally when they began selling the quartz watches. Today they offer a wider range of automatic options. I also think their pricing is reasonable for what they offer (similar to some of Longines lower priced offerings). I think the problem is with people that don’t appreciate the Detroit tie in. If Detroit assembly is important to you, Shinola makes sense. If it isn’t, Shinola does not. I am from Michigan and I feel it’s fair to say that Shinola has become the go to entry luxury brand for the upper-middle class working professional. I often see Shinola watches on the wrists of local doctors, university professors, and mid-level managers.

I own three Shinolas. I almost owned a fourth, but returned it due to lack of QC. Here's my beef: I purchased a Black Blizzard which came with a black bezel and numbered in white. Within a few months of daily wear the numbers were rubbing off, and had rubbed off completely within 6 months. I have an office job. I'm not banging my knuckles every day. On the other hand, my Smokey Bear and White Hurricane are great watches. I sent back the Forged Carbon Monster in February this year because it looked like a return (the box had a graphic torn off, the watch was crookedly jammed in the presentation box, the strap looked like it had been worn). I love the story of providing jobs and training to Detroit workers, but I no longer have confidence they are providing quality, so much so that I started looking to see whether the company had been purchased or had a management change.

Ofc the aftermarket prices are severely inflated, but RM is totally worth retail. Just calculate how much you need to design, test and produce a Richard Mille level world record breaking watch completely in-house, add sponsorship, ads, rent, equipment, salary, equipment upgrades and maintenance, staff etc. All watches are limited and production level is limited specifically to keep prices high and thus customers satisfied. There are roughly 50 000 RM owners total in the whole world.
While established brands mostly just take more time to polish a watch to make it more expensive.

Stayed at Shinola Hotel 2 weeks ago. Great stay. Locals call the watch the Detroit Rolex. My knock on them is too many quartz versions. Not sure why a serious company bothers with battery watches. My Accutron battery died on me during a flight to Moscow. 1979. Took it to watch store for new battery. Silly me. Watch store owner asked to see my now useless Accutron as it was the first one he’d ever seen. I bought an automatic Slava from him with days of the week in Cyrillic. Very cool. Still have it. Needs service thought. But lesson learned. Never owned a non-mechanical watch since.

Anyone planning to time travel to 1979 USSR should keep in mind that they won't be able to find a battery for their watch.
For everyone in the real world, modern quartz batteries can last a very long time and you can find replacements for most of them (and do the replacement yourself) at any grocery store. There are also solar quartz watches that will never need a battery or a service, basically for several human lifetimes.
