- In the 2nd and final chapter of the Mott Hammer Knife Mower Restoration, Taryl gets this thing all finished and restored to it's original beauty. And boy does this thing look great! Another fine restoration by Taryl and he goes over what all it took to get this thing in this nice of shape and also what it cost to restore this bad boy. Not too shabby for another vintage work of art. They don't make 'em like they used to that's for sure. Now There's Your Dinner!!

Have you ever been able to find Toro red
Those parts you made in C.A.D. (Cardboard Aided Design) came out really good.
I would buy one of those mowers if they still made them. Pretty neat!
Taryl makes things so simple.
Mr.Dactyl and his talented family on yet another restoration!! He is always teaching and entertaining at the same time. And on top of that he is truly one of the most naturally comical individuals i have ever seen. Thank you Mr. Dactyl and family!!!
yep
This little ripper is a keeper for sure, nice job Taryl!
Unfortunately saftey regulations don't allow basic and simple anymore . I'll stick with my old Lawn Boy mowers thank you :D
Good job Taryl , a piece of OP equipment history preserved.
I don't think "safety regulations" figured into it and this machine is not the simplest--simple is a rotary push mower with one spinning blade, which explains their endurance to this very day. I just think the Hammer Knife with its multiple blades, not to mention the hassle of sharpening (or replacing) each one, is way too complicated for the average homeowner. Safety regulations vary though, depending on locale....
After I use spray paint, I pull the nozzle off and attach it to the spay tube of brake cleaner and spray brake cleaner through it.
I turn the can upside down and spray the paint out of the pickup tube.
The hammer knife is a pretty neat system. Flail mowers I’m sure weren’t a new invention.
This is something you’d show off at the county fair where they have all the old tractors and things you get a lot of visitors checking that out
Taryl you are the wizard of homeowner implements. I really enjoyed this build.
"Top Shelf". Great job Taryl. Where else can you go and get entertained and educated at the same time? Keep em commin!
cuts reg grass way better then l expected, taryl putty for the win,
Hey mustie, love your videos!
Mott is now owned by Alamo who still manufactures flail type mowers. Alamo Flail mowers are mainly utilized for right of way mowing by government municipalities as well as state highway departments in different configurations of the flail style mowers. At one time the flail mowers were being manufactured for garden tractors in which were mounted on the front of the tractor.
MTD missed that one
@@larrygreenwood6923 And that is a good thing!!!
Best lawn/brush mower i've ever seen, great restro too!
Nice job Taryl! The Mott really eats up the weeds!i like how you compressed it into two videos, so we didn’t have to wait to see the results!
Well good afternoon me old mucker 🇬🇧 hope all is good
Bought a Honda XR650L new in 1995 and was ordering parts from J.C. Whitney. I also made a cardboard model of a universal windshield they had to make sure it would fit. Model fit perfectly 😁 and so did the windshield, because it gets expensive sending things back.
I miss their old catalogs. ☹️
I've never seen a walk behind flail mower, that's down right awesome! Beautiful restoration!
Taryl's Power Equipment Museum!!!!!!! Every single one of us watching this channel would go! You know we would, I would!! Special tours on Friday nights, sponsored by Hamm's. Oh yeah, color me there!
Now THAT is a real BushWhacker!!!!Beautiful job Taryl
We had this mower, I used it as a kid growing up in the 70's. Ours had the Briggs engine and the yellow paint was sun bleached and very pale. It was a great mower, but Dad hated it, didn't like us kids using it, he felt it was dangerous. What a great memory.
This quality item with history and provenance is worth the time and consideration. It brings out the best all round.
Would love to hear and see the Mott with the new bearings.... maybe a Part 3 please?
I Enjoy The Humor And Rebuilds. Keep Them Comeing Taryl
Lovely restoration Taryl ...great little mower 🇬🇧✊🏻
Thanks Taryl! This was new territory for me. Looks like a good idea.
Very impressive, Taryl! Nice restoration. I particularly enjoyed seeing you cut grass in a coat and tie!
Shines like A diamond!!!
The damn thing actually cuts grass. Not to mention little trees. Im impressed. Nice restoration.
Sweet old machine! Looking at that gap under the back of the deck, you wouldn't want your 12 year old grandson running it. One false move and his shoestring would be sucked right in and his foot spit out as mincemeat. Nice job on the restoration!
I love it! Wonderful to see an old piece saved from the scrap pile. Nice job Taryl.
Nice work Taryl. That little rascal is a beast.
Flail mowers are still quite common for mowing along highways, since they can cut steep steep slopes off the sides of a tractor and hit debris without much damage to the mower.
RustOleum spray stops up because the paint is thicker. Turn the can upside down and spray until only gas comes out, and the nozzles won't stop up as often. Stop as soon as the paint stops coming out with the can inverted. Their new self leveling brush on paint is amazing stuff.
I really like that the MOTT can get into tight places and turns easily. Unlike a regular mower that you have to do the back and forth maneuver to get turned around. Great job guys!
Yeah, just two wheels is key. I think the Mott corporation was trying to improve on the powered reel type mowers of the same era, but the utter simplicity of the rotary push mower explains why they dominate today.
After turning that mower into a work of art, there is no way I could have used it to cut grass.
Your restorations Taryl are top notch!
That’s so true about Rust-Oleum paint cans. That turned out really nice
That mower, I was going to call it a thing but, works really good. I'd sooner have that than a blade. Funny thing is I never saw one. And I am a lot older than you. I love it! I'd keep it too. You keep on keeping on!
WOO! WOO! Concourse de elegance! A Plus! ®™ Man without tool is nothing, Man With tool's He IS ALL.®™
I sharpened all the blades on a much larger unit like this that goes on a farm tractor. I really didn't notice it but not too long after sharpening I had to put new bearings in the unit because I had caused an out of balance problem. I spoke with the company who made it and they confirmed that's what had happened. Just thought I'd mention this.
I wait on your videos......love watching!!
Nice little machine for somebody that has a long fence line or something. Disagree though that "slow" and steady wins the race. Fast and steady wins the race. Better bearings and the governor adjustment should really make that a great tool. Thanks for posting Taryl. Sunday's wouldn't be the same without you.
That's a gnarly project T-man. Keep up with the cool projects. I wish they still made these mowers.
Great restoration! I have a 1940-50s REO powered reel mower. It has a proprietary engine.
It's in great condition! REO was a truck manufacturer of Diamond T tractors. They also built big straight trucks for fire trucks, etc. The mowers and other things were built at their Home Products Division in Lansing, Michigan.
Well done!
Nothing like that sense of pride knowing you took your time and did things right.
Your perseverance never ceases to amaze me. Keep them coming.
That thing is awesome! Great job making it look like brand new!
I watch your show a lot. I'm old and I know things! As soon as I saw the Mott I knew it would work great. It's the only one I ever eaw ihat small. And like you I'm surprised it isn't made anymore. Never caught on. Ahead of its time. The only thing I would have done different , I would have had that shaft with the flails powder coated black too. Your powder coater is cheap! Best of luck!
We got our little grass rats a Ranch King mower. We took the deck off and got them a trailer for it. They are really enjoying having their own "tractor" on our farm.
Thank you Taryl & Co. I am certain that, not too many of us, ever saw how those old machines looked like, brand new.
Beautiful restoration and beautiful little machine
Simple and Easy....somewhere along the line the world forgot about those.
A mower shop owner told me this the other day about the new Briggs n Scrantons that you cant change or add oil to, he said " The oil is made to last thru 50 hrs of operation, the engines only last 21 hrs" lol
Flail mowing on a small budget...........Great job fellas!
Taryl, thanks to Junior, your shaft looks simply sublime.
Nice job on the Mott. I suggest that you offer it to the first viewer who asks for it. That would be me. If I had that I could clean up my back yard and my wife would finally say: "Theres your dinner".
You did a professional job on the mower!!
Beautiful job taryl the details is where it counts
This shredder is nice..i would love to have one..could've used one when i was cutting grass many years ago..it looks brand new..those clinton engines were popular on mini bikes back in the day..appreciate the longer videos and the restoration..it's a beast of a mower..see you on the next one...Cheers friend 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Fantastic old unit! Pretty impressive in the rough stuff too. Thanks for the video, Taryl.
Excellent as always T Dog, keep em coming ! Cheers
The chance of getting anything vintage is slim to none. Unless your Mustie1 or recently Taryl
Another great job Taryl!
Fantastic job Taryl on the Retro Mott!
Nice job, looks fantastic. Great video, love watching.
Turned out great! Beautiful work. Another great TFA video.
Great job taryl, I can't believe how well that little thing cuts wow!!!!
Larger flail mowers are making a huge comeback. They are beastly machines. You get a lot more cutting power per horsepower than with standard blade mowers. Really great restoration. Thanks especially for taking it for a test afterward. Most folks wouldn't do that. Keep up the great work.
That is a very cool mower, I wouldn't mind having one, beautiful restoration Taryl!
Very nice job
What a awesome working machine
Those are cutting blades/kinves for lawns. The hammer blades are more like a T a single blade/knife for doing brush and thicker stuff. Great video 👍
M.A.G.A
The heavier duty flail blades are sort of like little scooped shaped hammers and made of cast steel-EXPENSIVE but can cut thru about anything the mower can walk over. The edge of the "scoops" are sharpened-and can be sharpened many times before wearing out.
I'm counting the minutes until the OSHA trolls show up. I had to come back and add, I'm surprised that while you're callin' stuff aluminium, you're not giving sizes in millimeckers too. You do good Taryl...if I lived nearby, I'd aggravate you more than Slippers does...bring my Cushman haulster for you to restore...got that thing in '66 when I was 8 years old.
That's awesome TD, nice work. I like that your actually using it.
Beautiful work!
It looks great cuts great simple equipment
Very cool. Never seen a small flail mower before like this.
WoW that turned out beautiful…👍👍👍
Wow! You do great work, dude! That powder coat is sweeeet!!!! 🤯
Excellent job on that little more Terrell good work
Love that thing! nice job👍
Most Excellent! Great suggestion for the family working together. Kids today cant even change the brake pads on their cars...
You sold me on trying to find one of these to add to my collection of equipment. That handled really well.
Looks beautiful!
just beautiful Taryl so very nice !!!!
SWEEET! Now if I could only get my neighbor to buy one to mow his pasture/lawn.
Wow, that looks amazing
Very impressive machine!
Great restoration...
Beautiful. Enough said!
Great vid buddy, thanks , really enjoyed this one .You're not just a pretty face, great with yer hands too. Oh, and greetings from across the pond in England I have never seen one of those flails. I used to be a tractor driver back in the day, (David Brown) for our local borough; used to mow their soccer pitches and cricket pitches and squares, (you lot over there can't play cricket it's too tough for ya).AQnyhoo, often used a drag along flail (a big one) driven by the power take off, which had an assembly almost the same as your little one, Keep em coming buddy.
Want your steel toe boots on with that thing . Works pretty good👍👍
Awesome job on the mower it came out great.
I have to put the rustoleum nozzles in thinner after every use. I agree. Buuuurp!! Lol love your outfit, classy, and maybe a tiny bit British. 👍🏼😎 Mott the hammer knife looks awesome, great job. Well do e old chap well done!
You did a wonderful job on your restoration of the Mott. After seeing it work, I wouldn't mind having one for cutting the tall grass and the small trees. That little guy works great.
That thing is worth a lot of money now. Looks good....
what do you call a gang of these? A mottley Crew!
Knew I'd find this comment in here somewhere...lol
That project turned out amazing
I agree with JR. Ya can't put rusty parts back on after doing all that work...good job!
Great video as usual Taryl. Always learn something new from watching your videos
I love seeing all the Oregon parts, I’ve worked for them for 18 years...
Very nice project,,,the Mott looks super,,,
Great work man!
That turned out really nice!! Does a nice job too!
