Donna Summer was Pop Music first female mega star. Selling millions worldwide and pushing the boundaries by crossing into multiple genres. She was first female artist to dominate the Billboard charts. The first female and the first black artist to have 3 #1 albums back to back on the Billboard 200 (album charts). They just happened to be multi-platinum selling double albums. She was the first female to have 2 #1 songs in the top 5, the first to have (2 #1 songs and) 2 songs in the top 3 on the Hot 100. She scored 9 consecutive top 5 singles between August 78 - Oct 80, all selling over a million copies or better (a physical sales record). In one 12 month period, from Nov 25 1978 - Nov 24 1979, she charted 6 top 4 singles, (4 -#1s, 1-#2, 1-#4), She was the first female to sit on top of 3 major charts at the same time, the first female to repeat having the #1 single and the #1 album simultaneously on the pop charts (3 times in 8 months). She was the first solo artist to have 3 # 1singles, and 5 top 10s and/or 5 top 5 singles in a calendar year (79). She sold 20 million plus albums and had 10 gold (1million), 2 platinum (2 million) singles and first gold maxi-single with Casablanca Records at the end of 70s in the US Market. She was first black female artist to be placed in heavy rotation on MTV, SWHFTM (Aug 83), UCL (Nov 83), she set a precedent of having 3 videos played consecutively in heavy rotation. She is the only artist to be nominated for a Grammy in 5 different genres, and the only artist to win a Grammy in 4 different genres. Named the "Diva De Tutti Dive " by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the first true diva of the modern pop era.

May I also add that Donna was the first mega contract artist. When David Geffen started Geffen Records he got Donna in the fold for 20 million dollars. Now stories are coming out about how he treated her when she was under contract with him. 💔

    • @DivoGo

She also was the first artist with a mega contract. Geffen Records signed Donna for 20 Mil in 1980( 80 Mil in 2021). Such a shame the way Geffen treated her after he had her on board.

C W Exactly what I thought the day she died 😢💔 I was on the fence about spending the money on tickets to that second concert, but I’d had the opportunity to score tickets to her Radio City performance and that is literally 8 blocks from where I grew up and was still living at the time. So I felt like to was meant to be and decided to go. SO glad I did, that was an even better show than the previous concert I’d been to. Her sister came out and sang Barbara Streisand’s part in “enough is enough”. Man, Donna Summer was just so fabulous. RIP Disco Queen ❤️

@@NativeNYerChicHK I saw her live in Toronto, Canada. I managed to score two complimentary tickets from the company that I worked for and they held the concert at Maple Leaf Gardens (famous old hockey rink) and not the best acoustics for music, however, that didn't matter, she was phenomenal. I heard that if she couldn't hit the really high notes, one of her sisters (back-up) did, so a very talented family. I was so sorry to hear that she died so young.

She is my QUEEN! Known as The Queen of Disco. The audio for this concert wasn't very good but other live versions are and of course, the audio. This song is nothing compared to what she could do with her voice. soft and sultry, hard and strong, really high and low, you name it. She was a VERY versatile singer that could sing MANY genres of music. During her musical theater days, she actually sang some opera as well, I think???

That's one reason she acts out her songs, vocally. As opposed to showing off her vocal ability with vocal runs and the other vocal gymnastics that others like Mariah, Whitney and others seem to incorporate into most all of their songs. Donna could do those things too, but I don't think she felt the songs called for that.

I met her here in Boston when I was a 15 yr old, she was born in Dorchester Massachusetts and went to the Jeremiah Burke high school, I just happened to live downstairs from her cousins and they managed to get me a visit with her at the Theatre. Her given name is LaDonna Gaines…she was/is the most talented, amazing , super nice lady….she will always be forever in my heart , the one I compare all other singers to

I had the privilege of meeting her in 1979. Besides her incredible talent and voice, people need to know that she was absolutely one of the kindest and sweetest people there ever was. There was nothing pretentious about her. If people take anything away from this, know that she was a great person

My sister and I would go roller skating and while this song came on they turned down the lights and lit up the disco ball during the change of the song......and we won many skating contests....oh those were the good times!!!
