rip dolores. one of the most unique voices ever.
The saddest thing about the song is it will never lose relevancy.
Russia and Ukraine
She should have done Eurovision
I thought that was an excellent touch when bad wolves replaced 1916 with through 2018, speaks to that sentiment
@@UKMessi1 honestly I have felt like this song applies so well to that situation.
I'm from Dublin and I love seeing reactions to how emotional the song is, but it destroys me that people don't understand what it's about
Being a former Belfast girl this song means a lot to me 1916 was the year of the Rebellion in Ireland, 1969 was when "The Troubles" as we call it really ramped up. My generation (same as Dolores) were all just tired of it, listen to Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2 and one of the lines is "how long? How long must we sing this song?
Having lived through it, I'm still saddened by what I thought at the time was completely normal eg. Stopping to get searched every time you go into a store, it doesn't matter that you're an eight-year-old
Growing up in the US I remember as a kid hearing about the bombings & the IRA on the news here. Then I heard it was Protestants & Catholics fighting each other and my kid brain thought " Don't they believe in the same God & Religion"? They are like brothers fighting each other how is this happening? Why? I didn't understand it.
I was born in 72. Growing up, U2 was my favorite band, and Sunday, Bloody Sunday was one of the first songs I ever heard. I’ve heard Bono talk and preach in his songs about the Troubles many times, but your simple comment really hit me. Thank you for sharing. Peace be with you.
@@BDogg2023 thank you for taking the time to read it, when I came to Canada it took me a year before I stopped pausing in doorways of stores and Mum saying gently to me "you don't have to do that here"
Lesley, I want o send you 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😢😢, Too much for an 8 yr old or any age child to be witness to. Be well former Belfast girl an Gods blessings be with you🫶💖
I'm sorry you went through that.
She's a hell of a guitar player too. That solo at the end does not get enough props. She was an enormous talent. RIP
1916. The Easter Rebellion. Irish republic against British rule in Ireland. First rebellion since 1798. This has been going on for centuries. Peace accords in 1998 settled it some.
Yeah and now our useless fucking government are trying to rip open old wounds just because of bloody Brexit! Blows my mind
Then when Brexit was going on; there were understandable fears that Brexit could bring about a revival of The Troubles. I listened to a song by American gospel singer Kelly Price called "Tired" following the news last year that a bus in Belfast, Northern Ireland had been hijacked and burned along with the subsequent violence that followed. This violence consisted of teenagers throwing bombs, bricks, stones and bottles at themselves and at police officers sent to stop the violence. The Catholic Unionist population of Northern Ireland was and no doubt still is tired of the violence by the Irish Republican Army, the police officers and the British Army; tired of being treated like scum by the politicians in Belfast and London, tired of the rigged court system siding with the Protestant Loyalists, etc.
The song was written as a response to 2 boys (aged 3 & 12) who were killed in the IRA (Irish Republican Army) bombings in Warrington, England. If you'd like to learn more about the Irish Rebellion of 1916, I highly recommend the movies Michael Collins starring Liam Neeson & The Wind That Shakes the Barley starring Cillian Murphy.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley is better when it comes to the history and giving a more well rounded view of the period, although they do play on the socialist angle too much given it's based on west Cork, a very rural area. Michael Collins is all over the shop with its history and is a bit over the top if I'm honest in portraying Collins as the one and only man to be able to push the movement forward.
Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll def check out The Wind That Shakes, Cillian Murphy is great in everything I’ve seen him in. Of course Liam is a great actor too so I’ll probably watch that one too. In America we didn’t learn about this, at least not where I’m from so I’ve read some and have a basic (very) understanding, but I want to learn what exactly has happened and why.
I live in northern Ireland lived through bombings from 7 years old ass windows blew on us as IRA had bomb in trainstation 80s throught to 1996 it was worse when my mum was young in 60s n 70s
Yeah it was a bomb in a bin in a busy town center if I recall, it killed to little boys.
No they’re part of it but it’s about what happened in Northern Ireland that’s why it’s set in Belfast. And believe me those two boys dying is nothing compared to what your army did to us
Dude, there are you? What's happened? We miss your smile, come back!
You talked about Dolores's singing voice. It may well be attributed to her Gaelic roots. It's called 'keening'. It is a wailing sound that was used in Ireland long ago to 'wake' (mourn) the dead. The word comes from the Irish “caoineadh”, pronounced like “queena” and it means crying or a lament. ☘🇮🇪
Thank you @phyllis !!
You are absolutely spot on 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Thanks for mentioning this!!

Thank you, you give the clearest explanation I've read before .
Ok, enough is enough. Where the hell are you? We miss you bro ❤
Aside from the historical context, as a former soldier, all I ever heard was a song that spoke to what I now know as PTSD. For so many years I was never diagnosed or treated and the only place I found solace was a song like “Zombie” and/or similar songs.
I can totally see that! I have ptsd from a different situation, but I could see how the lyrics could be put in the context where your mind goes through those traumatic war moments again and again and you think your living through it again.
Hope your doing alot better now 🙏 thank you for your service!
I
Seriously listen to Rooster from Alice in Chains ..hope that might help you too.
@@ko0974 every time I hear that song, I think of my dad. ✊🏼
@@lovelessjapan1971 oh gosh I hope haven't triggered bad memories of your Dad...I presume he was in Vietnam or similar...god only knows what they went through and worse treatment when came home....or your Dad had great taste in real music !! Hope you having some good days among your worst days..music is definitely a great healer..My own Dad has just passed 4 weeks ago and he no matter where he was listened to music of all types .....Even when he was dying and we were all there he still had music playing ..giving Alexa instructions on what to play next....yet to bring myself to listen to those ones, but I am the ones that have good times attached to them ...🤛
@@ko0974 sorry to hear about your dad. As for mine, he was one of those guys you may have heard about but never met. A myth. I spent time with him just listening and I would later learn that he felt that he had no one to turn to. I have felt the same so many times.
Since Dolores died, I can't listen to The Cranberries without tearing up. She's just a few years older than me, and I loved her so much, her sound, her voice, the lyrics of the group's songs, and the powerful music they produced. Such a tragic loss I still miss her.
Hi I'm from the same county as Dolores of the cranberries limerick
Such a useless death. I have spent many nights in hotel rooms and they are the loneliest places in the world. The staff all nod and smile and you can become desperately depressed. The drinks pile up to escape the sadness and then what seems a good idea of having a bath and you're dead.
That is the most tragic part of what happened to Dolores. If only someone was with her, if only someone realised, if only the staff checked on her. I am certain she never wanted this to happen. So tragic.
Hey Jay, just checking in again, hope all is well! Miss ya, hope to see you soon! 💙
Where has my man Jovaughn gone?
That’s a tune - Dolores was not only a singer, but also wrote this song, she sang it like it’s her own, the band played it that way too. Respect Dolores and RIP - your so missed, but remembered ❤️
R.I.P Dolores listening to this gives me goose bumps she was a national treasure 🇮🇪 a flawed genius like them all I guess she's missed hope the other band members are doing OK 👍
Yesterday my mom who was born in Italy after WW2 remembered buildings that still hadn't been rebuilt. She said her Mom told her stories of walking over bodies and her saying " you do it because you have to, not because you want to."
So they lyrics "It's not me, it's not my family" hits me in more ways than one. 1: I'm not doing the fighting nor do I want to. 2: I'm still alive and their not. 🥶
Amazing song and video.
RIP Dolores ❤️
Dolores said she wrote this song after the 1993 IRA bombings in Warrington Town in Cheshire, England. Some 56 people were injured in the blasts, as well as a boy 3, and a boy 12, who both died. The Cranberries were on tour in Liverpool at the time, some 30 km away. Immediately following the bombings there was a huge uprising of anger and revulsion both in England and Ireland. Dolores went on the say that she felt tremendous guilt.
Ya well the British need to free N. Ireland of their occupation.
@@rickmoreno6858 Oh, and what a surprise - you appear to be in the US! How did I guess?!
@@clairenoon4070 yep I was born here and guess what I'm a second generation American my mother's side came from Ireland my father's can't side came from Mexico what's your point oh I get where your point is I have an opinion that is strong and righteous and you're pissed off because oh my opinion differs from yours good job you can have an opinion too that's fine
@@rickmoreno6858 No, that's not an opinion, it's anti-democratic.
I realise that in the US you're not very keen on, or good at, democracy, what with the attempt just 18 months ago to prevent, with violence, the legitimate and democratic transfer of power.
Oh, and the small matter of the US being rated a 'Flawed Democracy' while the UK is a 'Full Democracy'.
Given that the authorities' top 2 functions in a democracy are to protect our democracy and keep people physically safe, your anti-democratic views would come to the attention of our security services. That's the kind of person you are. No wonder the US is such a disaster.
@@rickmoreno6858 BTW, you don't appear to have heard of punctuation. I can see why the average IQ in the US is significantly lower than in the UK.
No more videos, where's the dude?
A difficult time , a brave song … beautifully haunting
"Linger", "Dreams", and "Ode To My Family " are musts when diving in to the Cranberries. I've always said Delores` voice reminded me of Enya, whose biggest song was "Orinoco Flow".
Ode to family is a brilliant song
Such a powerful song. It's meant to stir and disturb and it does that.
This song holds true even today, with the violence happening in Ukraine as a result of Putin's illegal invasion. The only difference is the date in which it's occurring.... history is repeating itself.
Incorrect. You didn't even notice WHAT Ukraine and NATO have been doing to their own people for 10 years.
Don't be gaslighted by this one. ^^
@@Lyran7 Not their own people.
@@sexysadie2901 it was. Youre clueless
Ukraine has been in a civil war for a long time and nato broke their promise that doesn’t make what Putin did right but we have to look at both sides
This song really hits me. I remember when I was visiting my home country on the last day I was about to leave the morning of to go back home to Canada I turned on the tv and this song was playing. I was sad to leave, the sky was grey and it was raining hard and little did I know it was the last time I would be ever seeing my grandfather and my aunt alive. Whenever I hear this song I never forget that moment.
This never grows old, still gives me goosebumps. Dolores's vocal, such a one off.
Goosebumps the whole way. One of the best from the 90's for sure
When she says "1916" my heart breaks, everytime. I remember the 90s and the troubles. Tough times. Also from limerick and had european kids singing it this summer eal kids
RIP Delores 💔. What a great unique powerful singer.
My grandparents all came over from Ireland for a lot of reasons and this song sums up most of them. Awesome to hear a new generation listen to this. This song is powerful and brings out emotion out of me every single time.
Thanks for rewatching this video Jay! It has been awhile since I’ve heard this song as well. One of the best songs. RIP Delores ❤
This is still relevant somewhere on Earth to this day.
Major hit from back then. Everybody seemed to have liked this song no matter what genre of Rock they were into.. they had a few good hits.
I like the way you educate those who join you. Every time you make a story, you share the details you learned yourself while listening to it for the first time.
How have they educated people? Do you know what this song is about?.
@@katiemccallum2447 wanna lecture me about the Troubles? Or give me the name of the boy whose death inspired the song?
All I'm saying is that I see one of many reactors here who not only listens to the music out of his usual choice, but also actually reads up, even if only comments, and uses it to speak to his friends. If that is not one of the ways how to educate someone then tell me what is.
@@katiemccallum2447 If you have to ask that, you clearly wasn't fully watching the video.
Since you’ve watched the music video, i highly suggest the live version. Zombie live in Paris 1999 is a must watch, for a live performance it has a crazy number of views, over 150 million. They’re just as good live as in studio. Dare i say even better live coz you get to feel the whole vibe of the band.
Hi guys this is about the troubles in Northern Ireland. Very sad. Take care xx
This song always makes me cry. Its just brilliant. My Family fled Ireland in 1919 after "The Troubles" started.
Me too. On both sides, I had family that fled & family that stayed. Those that stayed inevitably lost loved ones to The Troubles.
The last time I was there was in 1999, and there was still tension in Northern Ireland that made some friends & family too paranoid to try to visit us in Dublin.
Even today, that underlying tension is *still* festering.
The war
I love that you are letting him react to some good music!!
The song is so old.. but it never gets old. Not the message, not the sound. I love it
One of my all time favourite songs. She was such a talent.
There are two outstanding films, "Belfast" and "Michael Collins", that will really help you understand the background of what happened in Northern Ireland.
Bad Wolves covered this song and Delores was supposed to be a feature on it but sadly she passed right before they were set to record. They weren't going to do it but they did and donated all the proceeds to her 3 children. I must admit it was fire and they did pay tribute to her in the video. I suggest you watch it
I just said the same thing. The video is amazing.
As as Duran Duran diehard, I pay my ultimate tribute to the Cranberries, and Dolores for being a massive influence on my musical ride back in the 90s. They were really movers and shakers of the industry then.
Ireland was under British rule and there have been many battles for Irish independence. Britain was fighting in the Great War, WW1. The Irish saw this as an opportunity to attack and during Easter week in 1916, there was a rising in Dublin. The rebels were defeated but it kick started Ireland on the road to independence. Independence was granted and Ireland became a free state in 1919. But at the loss of 6 of Ireland's 32 counties to the Crown. The new fight began in Northern Ireland which comprises of the 6 counties, between paramilitary groups, with the IRA (catholic) fighting for a united Ireland and loyalist (protestants) who wanted to remain under British rule. Many terrible terror attacks happened from both sides. The song Zombie is in response to the death of two children in an IRA bombing in the Cheshire town of Warrington in 1993. Thankfully The Troubles have calmed down a bit, but it still rears its ugly head from time to time.
Merry Christmas Jayvee... Where are you??
This song is always a punch to the gut......
Miss you man. You make a difference in the world.
Voice like an angel!
This is the music of my time, the more you learn about the background of the song, the better the song becomes. I didn't know any Irish at the time, but many English soldiers who were in Northern Ireland themselves and/or had many friends who served there, some of whom died in the conflicts. EVERYONE loved that song back then. The Irish and the English.
I hope you and your family had a great Christmas, Jay!
I pray all is well, if it's not too much to ask, will you post something on your community wall to let us know that you're ok, not trying to be nosey, just concerned...You're missed!💙
that voice... chills 2 decades later
This song was incredibly important.
And the way she sings here is Irish funeral wailing.
Ode to my family (of that same album), is a beautiful song.
My Favourite Cranberries song that. Absolute beautiful masterpiece.
Dolores was a special talent and will be missed for a long time! RIP you crazy diamond!
At least for me, I feel like knowing the context before hearing a song can make it more powerful when you hear the lyrics. Unlike a movie. Especially when it's something really specific like this song.
I was about to suggest Dreams by The Cranberries but I see you’ve already listened to the song. It’s unfortunate that the band is a bit underrated with the way they sound Celtic, which I consider more timeless as well as beautiful.
another one to check out is Salvation. Fantastic clip and powerful lyrics
Daffodil Lament(Live) would be a wonderful song to review/react to as well!!
This song makes me cry everytime
i was stationed in nothern ireland during the troubles it was not a good time i am so glad there is some kind of peace now.
dude, the meaning to the song is so much more important than how the song sounds itself. Your friend has the right idea by asking what it means. This song is THAT important to people.
Jayvee, where you are?
If u guys liked this version I highly recommend the cover by bad wolves the lead singer in this song was supposed to reprise her role for the lead vocals but she was found unalive in her hotel room so Bad Wolves still covered the song and gave and still give all the proceeds from the song to any of her surviving family members
Love their version
Rather interesting wording in your comment.
@@sootioohpepi7698 well I am autistic so take it as u will
Every member played their part so well. Super tight song and very easy and fun to play along to as well
Go to Thailand you hear this song every night played in some bar.. then walk another 100 yards and hear it again, night after night
Ireland. The Troubles.
I like the haunting video and her voice! It’s so 90s, my teen years, I love it. Linger by the cranberries is a banger but way different!
Seeing the city I grew up in the video takes me back.
A couple of bands with similar vibes and unique female vocalists The Cardigans - I'd particularly recommend My Favourite Game but they also collaborated with Tom Jones to do a cover version of Talking Heads Burning The House. The Sundays - Here's Where The Story Ends, Summertime
Hope Jayvee is okay 🙏

great artist, got chills. love the reaction, thanks
It's so great how open minded you are. You really pay attention to the lyrics
I was over there during an horrific incident and the situation is extremely complex and heartbreaking. Thank you for sharing this song with others too, Mate
I have never loved a reactor more.. Well done (Not in a patronising way, I promise) .. well done.. for sharing such an important song that means so much to millions of people in Ireland, UK and many, many other countries. Appreciate you!!!
The heart of the meaning of the song was,to me, directed to those who agree to fight in a war when the general purpose for it is either unclear to those who are fighting or supporting it being more influenced by what they were told they have to do in support of the war even though it is only in the best interest of those who sold the war to the public. The song writer is bringing the question to the minds of those that fight in and support the war “what’s in your head, zombie?”
Seeing as how the social toll that war takes on society by killing of people in mass is still not enough to bring the question to the minds of those who continue to support war of “what am I really accomplishing here?”, in spite of seeing what carnage it creates even in their own lives.
The writer also suggests that the “zombies” further justify the destruction by reasoning in their own minds that “it’s not my family”, not realizing that the mental impact hits them just as hard, since we are all part of the human family, the waves of destruction we participate in are also coming back to ripple into our own “family”.
Interesting that the singer died so young expectedly too. I’m sure that is just a coincidence though, go back to sleep…….
Powerful one she was so amazing sang with her heart !! Miss her voice hurts !
Dolores had a unique Irish voice, she was the signing angel of our unique island, god rest her soul 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
I had the honor of witnessing The Cranberries perform live on July 6th 1993 at Einstein a-go-go in Jacksonville Beach Florida.
I miss Einstein’s and Pier 7……
Ireland ❤ Palestine ❤ Peace.
Hey Jay, just checking in again, to let you know that we love, and miss you! I appreciate all the hard work you have put in, to ensure your listening audience, a great experience....! It's good to take a much needed break, we just want to know if you're alright, no explanation needed. 💖
I love the drumming in this song as well. It really gives a military feeling. Fergal Lawler is the drummer. The bassist is Mike Hogan.
Oh the drumming is very underrated because of how part of it is offbeat to how a song like that would be drummed for sure.
Miley Cyrus actually does a pretty famous cover of this at almost all of her shows. She recorded it for her last album, you should check it out
Terrible cover
The very thought of her ruining this is awful 🙄
Jay bring your arse back!! 😄 We miss you, hope all is well!❤
I grew up with this on the radio. Crazy to listen to people listen on youtube years later when there was very little internet.
The style of sing she is doing is called Keening, derived from the Celtic that is crying for the dead, which turned to English becomes Banshee... Without a lot of lore and understanding. But it does.
Love ❤️ love❤️ love ❤️ the Cranberries all their music is excellent had no idea for years how good they were
Hope you’re good bro
RIP Dolores!Living in Ireland for the last 22 years now...and Ireland rocks!
This song was a protest song about the war England had with Ireland. It's an anti war and anti IRA/Terrorist song.
Am English and this song brings us Brits and Irish together these day!!
R.i.p Dolores 🙏🏼❣️1 of the greatest songs ever
It's Northern Ireland. The Easter Uprising was in 1916. They were fighting British rule for almost 800 years.
I had to shake my head when you said "It doesn't really matter where there from" The whole song is about the IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY. So yeah it kind of matters that they are from IRELAND. lol
the Cranberries came out with this song in memory of two individuals, Jonathan Ball 3 yrs old and Tim Parry 12, their lives were taken via a bomb the IRA planted in England.
this fight between England and Ireland has been going on for over a century. Well, actually this has been going on since England first invaded the country more than eight centuries ago, Ireland has suffered from war, religious conflict, and political division, and the encounter between the English and the Irish has also left a profound legacy on Irish culture and even in the landscape itself. The peace process in Northern Ireland and Brexit outcome are writing a new chapter in the history of this complicated relationship.
Ya whoop I'm so delighted u thought of dis song ..outta all u listen 2 ..makes me smile 😃
