- If you're new to graffiti you have to watch this video for some tips and tricks on picking a name. picking. a tag name is important and this video will talk about some of the worst reasons people change their names in graffiti.

When I was backpacking. My nickname was "Kilgore" from the Kurt Vonnegut novels. I was nicknamed "Kig". So I start off as "K1G". But I stopped using it because flowing the 1 between two letters was too annoying. So now I write "Kone" or "K-one". Been with that for a little over 2 years. But I still tag "K1G" from time to time because my handstyle with that name got really nice. I was just never able to adapt it into a throwie or half decent peice
It’s nice to write other words now and again. I typically do them as pieces, and countersign, with one of the tags associated with my name, to relate the work back to me, but still allowing for fresh art.
First started off as “rad” circa 1,5 years ago. Then “juzo” then “jazo” then “jaze” and now I’m at taez. Let’s see how long it’s gonna stay haha
Update: it turned to mesr and now aesr/aezr

@@Theartistblock basically accept the fundamentals,learn to crawl before you can walk "and learn to be uncomfortable with your lettering, practice learning weight, negative space and all concepts of value" don't be comfortable with one style or group of letters,try them all..

Had about 3 names since I started out 21 years ago (now landed on ones) and only just started gettin my throwies up and looking half decent motto of the story never give up folks 🤣

Its exactly 3 years a go that i changed my tag name. I had to because of personal reasons some of the greatest rock 2 names maybe thats a intressting topic for a video man
you should make a video talking abt how to pick colors for a piece
I adapted my daily handwriting to a clean all caps readable format. This way I practice lettering and word combinations without thinking about it.

I stuck with Astek since I started, it was supposed to be "Aztec" but I struggled with the "Z" a lot...
I kinda feel chained to it cause I never heard of someone else writin it, and that the letter structure flows pretty well in my opinion, the A can be modified on the left pillar to kick up and balance the K at the end
But I am starting to feel like it's corny now lol

So this has been in the back of my mind, but what do you think of legacy tags? my dads tags before he passed were Ebola and SIE. He stopped tagging after I was born but I grew up hearing his stories about his art and I got to see lots of pictures. I just started with graff and have been using my own versions of his tags. Is that something frowned upon in the community or not.

You already carry your father's name. No reason you couldn't carry his other name

Follow all rules and keep that name clean with yourself and other writers . Can’t get away with quantity over quality either if you’re going to be repping that name. Practice practice practice before you go out and resurrect that name 🏆🏆💪🏾💪🏾

I have a few ideas but how personal should the name be? I have a couple names related to my band’s music but I’m not sure if I should mix the two
just try out all of them and you´ll see which one fits the best. Another way would be to sketch the whole alphabet and see which letters you like the most
I stayed with my second name but I switched out to letters because of letter structure
Names to avoid: DO NOT create fake gang tags, or try and bite gang tag styles, in your writing. You’re going to bring a lot more scrutiny to the area, and wind up catching a hot one, from an actual gang.
I've been tagging since middle school. I'm now 41 years old and have actually settled on a few. Xekure/Rexq are the main ones. My first tags were Quazi and Bimma/Bema. I stopped for a while to focus on school and life in general. I got back into tagging and throws in College with RayBz, Werds and Xeker. I met some fellow writers around that time and they taught me a lot. But they also respected how I approached graff and my attitude towards others. I'll probably be doing it in the nursing home... lol
Xekur sounds like the dutch word zeker which means "sure/definite" so thats a fun coincidence

Seriously man I have followed all your stuff and I still feel like my name is harder than others. I've done lots of names but the one I like is DMA. The D and M are bold and the A is crap in comparison and its difficult to flow. How do I connect the D to the A?

A name bestowed or earned just hits different. You don't get bogged down with picking one. Can only be done if you have a crew or a mentor. I got mine bestowed on me when I was a bboy. Then later adapting to NEIGS after playing around with other names and letters while being a toy.
It's an experience in being inexperienced and free from learned habits. Play around with all the letters and familiarise yourself with writing them in different ways.
A great example is how BRODAR writes and flows.

@@louKushh that doesnt even matter unless there is someone already in your hoods writing the name you want but you can then add maybe two/2 at the end if you really want that name too. Otherwise it doesnt matter. Every name is propably taken somewhere.

Tank is also on the list, as is joker, psycho, reaper, as well as grim. All much worse than sano. A name is as good as the person using it and the effort they put in. any name is good in the right hands
I understand any name is good in the right hands. But maybe the list shouldn’t include the most used tag names because I thought the whole idea was to be your own person with your own style. It just seems like you’re encouraging people that it’s okay to use common names and saying “you can use the name of a king or popular internet artist” seems misleading and you could be getting some kids in some serious trouble if they ever get caught up with the wrong person. Just trying to help the community.
@@theartjrk dude I use grim , one of the most over used names in history. If your only source of Individuality is your name then that person has huge problems with their work. Your Individuality comes from how you use the fundamentals. Despite having the name grim I am still one of the only people doing 2 3 4 and 5 point perspective graffiti where the 3d turns into the letter and iv been doing that for over 15 years now. You're reading too deep Into things and making mountains out of ant hills. Any experienced writers knows the only off limits names are legends names and sorry social media dudes have almost no clout worth giving them exclusivity to their name. That's why my name is even on the list. Kings names arent exclusive either, and sure it might be wise to avoid kings names if you live beside them, that's a judgment call they'd have to make for themselves and that's why i wrote what I wrote.

I assume you're just kidding, in witch case ignore the following, but just incase you're not, you dont really think you're a legend do you? my own name is on the list, and the names of people twice as good as us, who've been writing far longer, and have lots more credibility, their names are also on the list. the only names off limits are the names of legends. Having a large follower count means nothing for rank in graffiti.
