  • This video is a real test to see how Loud The Classical Guitar Really is…How did we do this? We used a decibel meter! There were 3 very different guitars used here one with fan bracing, one with lattice and one with a custom bracing.
Thank you to Travis Wood for lending his 1974 Kohno for the video and decibel meter! As well as Playing on my guitars to allow me to hear everything from the listeners side!
Travis channel can be found here: youtube.com/@t...
And his comparison video can be found here:
Other guitars featured were made by 52 instruments (Jeremy clark) and Gef Fisher. More details about these builders can be found here

Back in my playing days my main (and sometimes only) guitar was a No. 15 Kohno, made in 1974. Beautiful instrument. A joy to play.

Mine is a joy to play too, such a balanced, traditional sound and reminds me of a Fleta

Cool. I would bbe curious to see this done comparing the best classical to a dreadnought steel string, acoustic arch top, all metal resonator guitar and a banjo.
I know steels strings are not ideal, but seeing the same classical piece performed on the three guitars suggested would be interesting.
I mentioned the banjo because early jazz used banjo, rejecting acoustic guitars for being too quiet.

How much does the decibal reader thing cost?
I prefer quieter instruments because I developed hyperacousis after standing too close to speakers at a rock concert

Great demonstration, you could have mentioned for perspective what common sound levels in every day life are. Example: conversation 60 dB, siren 120 db. Also what is a dB and what do the different levels mean compared to each other, such as a 6 dB change is double the sound level.

That’s really helpful to hear about. Thank you so much for letting me know! If I make a part two, that is certainly some thing I can lead with!

By far the loudest classical guitar I've ever played is a Matthias Dammann 'double top' . The loudest steel string I've played fingerstyle on so far was a 20 year old Lowden O10. With flatpick there will be other makers.
