  • Wednesday is Feijoada day across Sao Paulo - and so we met up with our new friend Felipe and his family, who are local Paulistanos, for our first ever feijoada experience! Did we like it? Check our vlog to find out!
Feijoada almost looks like a black-bean chili. It's a soupy mixture of beans, and various pork meats, eaten with rice, farofa, and cabbage. It's the national dish of Brazil and a must-try food for any tourist, travelling to Brazil.
    Thanks for watching our vlog!
Stay tuned for more Brazil travel vlog, Brazil travel guide, Brazil first impressions, and many more as we explore São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, Salvador, Bahia, Minas Gerais, the Amazon, and more! We cannot wait to explore Brazilian culture and traditions, explore its beaches and rainforest, meet the locals, and try more Brazilian food!

Living here is Washington State is not so easy to find all ingredients that go in a feijoada, however, it is not a difficult dish to make. I use the very basic stuff to make it: Black beans, Kielbasa polish sausage, bacon bits (not strips), diced onions and garlick (salt, of course). It all goes to the slow cooker for 5 to 6 hours and... voilá!

A lot of brazilians (myself included) also prefer the feijoada without some of the parts you mentioned, like tongue and ears. Usually the restaurants have two 'versions' of the feijoada, one with everything a pig has and another with ribs, sausage and more common parts

i totally connect with steve, i love feijoada but i actually have trouble with thr unknown fatty and soft parts, thats why you have to order what brazilians call "feijoada light", which is feijoada without the weird parts: ears, tail, tongue etc. (lots of brazilian, i would say about half, prefere the light version. Also, your plate was all wrong haha! it was too dry and too mixed up. lastly, the more you know about feijoada the better it gets because you actually start to know your taste, which part is what and then you go only for the parts you like the most. Me for example I love the sausage, jerky, pork chops, torresmo, and dislike ears, tongue, nose etc (the same as steve). next time go for "feijoada light" and try to me more organized so you know what youre eating and your brain doeasnt get all messed up. :)

I love feijoada! My favorite parts are sausage and the ribs. It is also traditionally served with kale and orange slices as side dishes. That hot, pepper-based sauce pairs very well with it, too. I love getting a good amount of the black bean sauce to mix it up with the rice and the farofa, that's just delicious. I saw that you guys mentioned the clay bowl but that's not where it was cooked, that's just for show when serving to make it look good, lol. And yes, you gotta be careful when chewing because you might just find a bone and you don't wanna break your teeth, hahaha but that's just something you get used to. Based on what Steve said, I have a feeling that he might like the traditional dish of Morretes-PR, the barreado. It's a kind of beef (no skin, no bones) cooked almost to the point of melting in your mouth. It is served very similarly to feijoada with the rice and farofa but no beans. Sometimes the farofa accompanying it can be sweet, too, with banana slices in it. I think you should give it a try if you ever come to the State of Paraná (there is even a very touristic train ride to get to Morretes).

It's actually quite common here in Brazil for people not to like these weird and uncommon types of meat like "ears", "tongues", "knees", "skin", and so on... myself included, and feijoada is my favorite food ever! The more "common" type of feijoada only comes with common types of meat, like sausage, ribs, beef, and so on... In fact, it's so common for people not to like these "unusual" types of meat that restaurants 99% of the time offer the "complete" feijoada but they also offer the more "common" feijoada with common types of meat, which means that you can choose the one you like! Next time you eat feijoada make sure to order the "common" type of feijoada. When you don't have to worry about these weird textures and just focus on the flavor I promise feijoada will become one of your favorite foods ever! The taste is simply out of this world!

He wakes up like 4-5am to start making it and he finishes somewhere close to 3pm

Your opinion is absolutely fine, Steve, and yes, it's great to see an honest travel youtuber just being straight about liking something or not. Of course, there is an amount of respect we appreciate for our local cuisine, and you have showed that so it's all right, even if you hadn't enjoyed it at all. I don't know if it's in your plans but you guys should visit the South and the North of Brazil, it's two completely different kinds of cuisine, one from Germany and Italy mostly and the other indigenous, both amazing.

you described feijoada as any other brazilian do along their life.
    I didn't like feijoada until my 18's.
and I still eat part by part trying not to eat bones as well.
when younger I just eat sausages and bacon along beans (some call 'feijoada light') - but now I can handle this full tradicional way, where everything is cooked more than one day, so the flavour is full, and the meat is tender and rendered black as the colour of the beans.
that's the way. for you it's an experience.
there's a big type of feijoada buffet that all the meat is separated in different pans. So it's a way to experiment each kind of meat separetely. - but you went all full on tradicional 'all in', lol

Steve, in fact there are two feijoada days in São Paulo - Wednesday and Saturday. Some premium hotels in São Paulo serve a buffet of feijoada where they carry all the meets separetedly in each big clay bowl and you serve yourself only with the ones you like. In the entrance they serve you a small glass of cachaça with lime and also a small clay can with just the liquid part os the feijoada rich in seasoned flavour, that we call "caldo de feijão". And also we do have in São Paulo a famous restaurant specialized only in feijoada, where they serve it every such a day, 7 days a week, and also they have delivery, so you might order to come to home or to your local hostelry. The name of the restaurant is "Feijoada do Bolinha" (Bolinha's Feijoada). Bolinha means a cute ball guy, i. e. a short and round fat guy. The founder and the sun are like that, and even the wife. It'll be an amazing experience. Everything of very high quality and cooked with much love. Ivana will grade 7 stars, for shure. I love the English speaking of both of you, very clear, even yours, Steve, being very fast. The both of you, bro, are very Brazilian in your soul. Congrats.

The Green veggie = fried kale with garlic. Feijoada is a heavy meal and salty, you usually eat Orange slices um the end to balance out the flavor A Lot of pork in a Bean stew kind of like a "soul food" . Originally plantation owners would not use those pork parts and would leave them as protein for the slaves. Most of the parts used are either smoked, like the ribs, or jerked. Now it's our National Dish.

  • @crescenciooliveirassantos4400

Em SP há restaurantes com feijoada completa, porém, para servir, os ingredientes estão em panelas separadas. Você se serve apenas do que gosta.

May u would prefer "light feijoada" that has only some kind of sausages, ribs n jarked meat. Some places offer the feijoada as a buffet then u can get the meats that u prefer only. U also can try Moqueca, I like Prawns and Fish(together)Moqueca, don't forget to check the size of the prawns ask for the best one, of course is more expensive, but much better!

Btw , I don’t think that they used tongue(pork) there . In the feijoada used to cook with “paio” sausage , that’s different sausage that u used to eat(calabresa) in the $3 . Normally the part with bones , could be the rib or tail . And in the feijoada use ear (pork) too. Well, in my life I had never eaten feijoada with internal organs(liver, lung or another organ) .

Pretty sure you guys go to Rio, and if you still in são Paulo, I would suggest you to make this trip by bus but before getting to Rio, jump over Ubatuba, which stays in the são Paulo border to Rio, there you're gonna find amazing beaches or stop over Paraty or Angra dos Reis, incredible small beach Towns in Rio. They are all on the way to Rio de janeiro

I loved his honesty! It took me several visits to start enjoying the feijoada. At first, I hated it. Now, I love it. The light version is not as flavorful as the regular. Skin and bones give feijoada its remarkable flavor. Get the beans from the full flavor pot and meats from the light version.
