- Boteco hopping in São Paulo!
Boteco is a term for traditional bars in Brazil.
It's a meeting place for people who are looking for good drinks and cheap snacks.
Nowadays, many traditional botecos have evolved to fancy bars.
Check out our vlog to see why Brazilians love boteco!

YES! We certainly lived the BOTECO LIFE in style that day. So glad I got to accompany you guys! Whether it be an overpriced watered-down whiskey or a fancy mouth-tingling Jambu Sour, each moment was memorable! Thanks so much for the support, amigos. Boa guerreiros! 💞
Well said buddy! We had a great time filming this one 🍻🍻!!

@@md_coelho1499 so nice of you, mdcoelho! Thanks for watching our video! :-)
So, Brazil has this thing where we like to name fancy establishments using humble names, so when you see "boteco" or "botequim" something something IN THE NAME of the place, that's not actually what it claims to be, it's usually a more upscale bar instead. That happens a lot and not just with nightlife 😂
Gosh, I miss going to real botecos! It's been at least two years since the last time I was at one like that. Enjoy the beer and the finger food!
🍰🎂🧁🥧🍿🎁 Happy Birthday, Steve~ 🍰🎂🧁🥧🍿🎁
May all your wishes come true~

Man I’m missing Brazil so much. I lived there for two years and I wanted to leave but when I see these videos I feel so much nostalgia

hey guys, you mentioned that is looks "dirty" and this is exactly how it is called this kind of boteco, we call them "pé sujo", which means "dirty foot" literally.
Ah ok! We didn't want to be offensive or rude.. but we wanted to describe it accurately! And honestly I really love having my cervejas in a 'pe sujo' boteco rather than a fancy one! So, we meant no harm when we said they looked sort of dirty, (or un-renovated LOL), and it's great to know you guys call it the same. They really are great places for a cerveja :D
Copo sujo também.
Dirty is not a bad word to describe a boteco. We use this expression to describe such places: “pé sujo”. It literally means “dirty foot”. It makes reference to places that are so simple that people can go even if they are barefoot.
Tbh boteco is a culture across the whole country, regions may disagree from each other on some things but not on botecos and that the beer must be served ice cold kk
If there is that much space inside for so many tables, it's not a boteco lol it's a bar/restaurant. Sitting on the sidewalk or at a counter is definitely part of the true boteco experience. If the table and chairs are made of plastic it's 👌 a true boteco. If there is always group of middle aged regulars then it's an old school certified boteco. My dad had his own personal beer cup at his regular boteco 😂
Great comment!! Just great top to bottom
if there's not a drunk pissing you off it's not a boteco kkkk
Não viaja, é um boteco sim
Too many personal criteria man, boteco comes in many types and sizes
Good job guys! Can’t wait to see you experiencing the “espetinho culture” in the northeast part of Brazil. Btw, did someone already mention that “camisinha” also means “condom” and that’s actually the origin of the beer bottle cover nickname? Lol
Yes, LOL so funny about the condom part... I was surprised when I read that lol
He's right! How did no one mention the real meaning of “camisinha”? Lol
Art missed this one out. Camisinha is like a beer condom. And the finger claw tip is a must - believe me i have seen a lot of broken glass 👊🤣
Mad props for you guys for not just traveling and rushing things without actually knowing the places youre visiting and taking time to know the culture, food and etc. have a great one. 🖖🐷💚
Been following up your journey thru Brazilian corners for a couple of weeks now and getting to know the channel itself, you guys are really cool and good people.
Seems that after this short time in here you could catch a little bit of the local culture and really enjoy it. It's amazing that you guys are speaking tons of portuguese words already and with a good accent btw.. haha..
Enjoy your time here guys!
That's something I miss A LOT from sp living in Finland 🥺 meu litrao um botequim e um franguinho a passarinho 😩
Kkkklkk
I live in São Paulo city and got a really great experience with this couple of "gringos" travelling into my own city. Thank you!
If you want to live like a regular Brazilian in a city like São Paulo but you don't too much money, you should to go a Shopping Center (mall), and eat in Habib's (low cost fast food). Typical weekend plan for those who live in a budget in big cities in Brazil.
Haven't you been to VILA MADALENA yet??? It's the most famous neighbourhood in São Paulo to go drinking at night. It's full of bars with people drinking on the street. You should go there on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night before you leave São Paulo!
What an awesome day to experience Boteco/Brazilian's traditional bars. Wonderful to see you guys having such an enjoyable stay there. Thank you, Art for your kind hospitality. Kudos to all !!!!
A happy blessed birthday to you, Steve. Sending you best wishes for success, health, joy and good fortune today and in the year to come. Enjoy your special day 🎂🥂🎉🥳
Remember:
A boteco has to look a little bit dirty and/or old.
If it's fancier, it isn't a boteco. It's a common bar (maybe imitating a boteco style, but it isn't really a boteco for me).
And the ultimate boteco is a "pé sujo" xD At least in Rio. Or a "botequim".
It's like the even dirtier (in this case, when someone says "botequim, they are all kinda dirty indeed), messier and older. Botecos sometimes look old and dirty, but are not really that much).
Usually a real boteco doesn't have "boteco" on its name. I've already seen a lot of fancy bars using in the name "boteco". Even using the name "botequim". It's a gourmetization.
Good to know about boteco
@@semnome6059 Some of them are not really dirty dirty. Some are. You know where you accept to go to, but fancy bars aren't botecos.
@@semnome6059 botecos are more messy than actually dirty. Brazilians have a very high awareness and attention to hygiene and cleanness.
Great comment!! Thanks for all this info. We tried to include as much info as we knew about botecos; but we figured there would be lots of great comments like yours to help us fill in all the details. Thanks again for watching and commenting. This was a fun one to film :D
@@publisidney I wouldn't trust so much in all of them, though xD
The "pé sujo" types especially LOL I don't know xD
But I think generally people know the botecos well because the most traditional ones are in our own neighborhoods and places where we are used to go. So it's our decision to trust or not hahaha at least when it comes to the food.
Kudos to you Steve and Ivana for exploring the neighborhood bars. I knew you liked blue-collar culture.
Where is your favourite boteca (or bar)? 🍻
GONZAGA. pretty close to where you were wandering around in this video (pinheiro’s neighborhood)
Congratulations
.. this is by far the best blog showing actually what Brazil is about, Specially understated São Paulo. ...
There's so much to see though the country that tourist simply ignore or don't know about.
it's good to see you speaking a little Portuguese, it seems you learned quickly 🇧🇷💜
I love that u guys upload ur videos around 12pm. Someting good to watch around lunch time 😅💛🥰🎉🥳
Boteco is a brazilian culture, you gonna for every single state and you gonna se 1 boteca in every street/esquinaq
Ooh wow! Excited for this :D. Maybe stay tuned for more boteco vlogs then ! :)
you both are having the full experience, amazing!
Great video! I love the bar culture of São Paulo, next time we have to go to some night clubs hahaha
In Minas gerais we call this kind of bar "Buteco copo sujo" or dirty glass Buteco 😆 not that it is dirty but "vintage" and beers are cheaper
Lovely fun vlog, guerreiros! Interesting and everyone enjoyed themselves.
I'm guessing "boteco" is related to the Spanish "bodega" (as well as the French "boutique").
I've seen pricey hipster wine bars calling themselves "bodegas". But an old English retired journalist friend living in a pueblo in northern Spain along the Camino Real, the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela, kept his personal wine in the pueblo's common "bodega". This was a dark gloomy chamber dug out of the side of a hill and the whole village (pueblo) stored there wine there to protect it from the humidity and beastly variations in ambient temperature. Every day or two he would go to the bodega to fetch his wine for his dinners.
Did you savour slowly the cachaça Art gave you? I've heard there are indeed some very fine quality cachaças to be appreciated gradually. Very charming of Art!
Ahh! right. Forgot to mention that boteco is related to the term 'bodega' in Spanish (blame it on the cervejas!), although I didn't know 'boutique' was in that same category too. Very interesting!
And yes the cachaca Art gave us is really delicious. We still have half the bottle... although it might not last long :)
@@JetLagWarriors Yeah Steve. I think bodega was either a small wine shop or wine storage place.
Nice to see in the comments that botecos were small unpretentious places where the good old dads could go to relax and chat with their friends.
@@justme7920 Hi, Just Me. I saw the places selling "shots" when Ivana and Steve were in Romania? Do you have these Brazilian style neighbourhood botecos in Romania as well?
@@alfawolf7125 In Latin it was "apotheca", kkk
Something similar today to what we in the UK would call a Pub Crawl or according to a relative of a friend living in Halifax Nova Scotia a Bup Crawl. Good to see eveyone enjoyng a drinking session.
These places are great to see a football match, they are always with many people on football match days here in brazil.
love your videos of brasil. I went to brasil for the 2014 World Cup and visited Recife, Natal while staying in Rio. Never got to go to SP and loving your vids. I told my wife we would return one day. If vacation approved, we'll be heading down in September. Thank for all the info you provide.
You guys are so fun and polite!
Nice you guys are having so much fun in Brazil! Enjoy the trip!
Lovely to see u guys happy new year xxx
Loving your videos in my country! ♥
I just binged watching all the videos in Brazil! You are doing a great trip! But I might share a couple quick tips: the plant in the backyard of Ilha Bela’s house is a yucca/cassava bush, not what some ppl though. 😂“Camisinha” is condom (to protect the bottle ). ENJOY!!!!
Fun was had by all. Keep safe, healthy and happy.
You guys are such a friends that I have been looking for here in Canada. Cheers!
My fav CZcams couple!
Meet you guys here on CZcams a few days back, and i'm loving your happiness going to new places, have fun and enjoy our country! 😊
lmfaooooo yalls brazil videos are getting better day by day i love it!!!!
Very interesting, I hadn't heard from the Boteca until I saw this video. I've been vlogging from Thailand for almost a year and can't wait for international travel to return to normal.
I saw you had some Paraty cachaça. Paraty is a historical town on the coast between Rio and Santos famous for it's cachaça production. There you can get a tour to see a cachaça distillery (factory).
I've actually never taken this tour but a good friend did and liked it very much. It may take most of the day.
I loved your joy .
Who's gonna tell them the real meaning of "camisinha" even when is related to protection of the bottle hahahahahah
'Camisinha' is slang for "condom" kkkk
LOL Really? too funny lol
I was just about to say it haha
Love this video
In the periferia you will find a bar or botequim ( boteco) or "venda" generally known by the name of owners. Those kind of "bar" venda - you will find drinks but also some few grocery items, and some dominos, cards games.
Oh man, I used to live 2 blocks away from Largo da Batata. If you're into botecos you must go to Bar do Gonzaga. It's the oldest one from the neighborhood!
Top de mas 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Boteco life is everything haha
So glad you guys seem to genuinely appreciate the experiences here! I'm from SP and I love Sampa, but there's so much too see in other regions too... Hope you'll have time to enjoy Rio, Minas, Bahia, other Northeast states, maybe Amazon and the South.
PS: It's a shame, but I've never been to the Amazon.
Amamos Sampa ⚫⚪🔴
Steve, you must pronounce ka - sha - sa. The "ç"(cedilla mark) in Portuguese always sounds like the consonant "s" instead of "z". Greetings from Brazil and happy birthday!

In Brazil the national city of bars and boteco is Belo Horizonte-Minas Gerais
Ow man, you are having fun, nice! I hope the mix, caipirinha, cerveja and whisky didn’t fall you! Take care
Let's go! New vlog, love you guys, keep the good work
The best cachaças in Brazil are from Minas Gerais and the itinerary of the historical cities in MG, such as Ouro Preto, Congonhas, Tiradentes, Diamantina, etc. are not to be missed! I would like to know if it is in your plans to travel to MG, to get to know not only the historic cities but also the capital, Belo Horizonte, which is very nice. In Belo Horizonte, you can't miss the Central Market, wonderful and without the cheats as in the market of São Paulo, besides the Pampulha Lagoon, the Pope Square among other things. Another place not to be missed is Inhotim, in the city of Brumadinho, the largest open-air museum of modern art in the world! Minas Gerais is a state of many mountains and waterfalls, a place of much ecological tourism. We have the city of Capitólio, very high waterfalls and lots of tourism, and, among many other cities (impossible to say all of them), Monte Verde, which is a European style city, very cold, beautiful, and was considered the best destination for cold (mountain) tourism in Brazil in 2009!
Come to Minas Gerais, and drink the best cachaça in Brazil and the original pão de queijo (cheese bread), and the cheeses here, which are among the best in the world. The Serra da Canastra is considered one of the main cheese-producing cities, a paradisaical place, with fantastic natural beauty! The people of MG are also different, very receptive, and the food from Minas Gerais is considered the best in Brazil! Yes, this is no exaggeration, everything in MG is very good. Even Pelé, the best soccer player in the world, is from here! Laughs...
Minas Gerais is located next to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in the southeast region, it is the third state in the economy of Brazil (but it is much bigger than both) and it stands out for its agriculture and cattle raising, tourism, and ecotourism (besides also having many industries). Cows, oxen, and horses are bedded for millions of dollars! Minas Gerais is considered the "granny state" of Brazil, but I usually compare it, for its agribusiness, to the state of Texas/USA.

Man, Salinas' Cachaça is so greater....
@@PeterAlexsander salinas is in minas gerais

Very nice!😆
A boteco is also usually aimed at the lower classes. That's how the original botecos started in small and poor communities. The atmosphere is very laid back and simple. A fancy bar would never be considered a boteco. Although now you'll see "gourmetised" versions of botecos for the upper classes but it's basically a performance of the real thing.
Yo, me and my boys always chill at Pitico and I always order the drink you did, really nice to see a video from you at a place I hang out very often haha, cheers dude!
Muito bom!
Guys you were just in front of the place called SIMBALAÊ, which the owners are a family I know, and they have THE BEST CAIPIRINHA with RAPADURA (they won prizes w it, rapadura its a super tradicional brazilian raw sugar bar) and also very northeast style finger foods and burguers. You must go there before leaving sp!

You guys MUST spend more time in Vila Madalena in Sao Paulo, a neighbourhood of botecos, restaurants, clubs and art.
Comida de boteco, me remete à infância. ❤
When you talk about bars in Brazil you need to know Goiânia. The best city bar wise. It’s a big city close to Brazil’s capital. Hope you can come up here! Great videos! Keep up the work!!
Parecem relaxados e calmos mesmos
When you guys come to Rio you should go to Olégario avenue at barra da tijuca. It has it's own lifestyle, an avenue with lots of different bars with a lot of diversity. There you can eat, drink sitting, buy a beer and drink standing on the sidewalk (sometimes even on the streets when it closes). If you guys visit the favelas it would also be a great contrast because Barra is one of the High society neighborhoods in Rio.
Try these: Bar do Veloso at Vila Mariana neighborhood, you must ask coxinha and bolinho de arroz. On Padaria Ceci in Planalto Paulista neighborhood ask for a pie of ham and catupiry. Pizzaria Sala Vip at Ipiranga neighborhood.
“Never get high on your own supply!” That’s a good one Steve. Lol ...

at least here in my city the dirtier older the boteco is the better, and you get a bonus if the owner not polite and angry
LOL very interesting
Melhores botecos é aqui.
